Hello I have the same problem brand new pc xp downloaded updates and hey presto black screen white cursor. Works perfect if I recover to earlier date but as soon as the updates download I am back to a black screen white cursor. Any idea of which update is causing the problem and how to fix it please.

change update option to download but don't install then let them download and do a custom install, the updates one by one and you should find the one causing it ,only install critical updates and not any software ones if they are offered

The Hardrive is fine, Laptop is pretty new. It doesn't read when i try play from music folder aswell, I think it's a fault with Vista to be honest.

By "Keeping a youtube video up" I mean I have to go on firefox, and find a video that has sound on youtube so when my sound goes, I play that video and then press play on my windows media player and most of the time it ends up playing a song. But then sometimes It won't play anything and I have to restart my laptop. When it doesn't play, it says the files in media player are corrupt.

ok, so instead of going to youtube ,try going to you music folder and click on a song ,what happens, if it sees songs as corrupt until you reboot ,could be a problem reading from your harddrive harddrive could be getting bad

I did the msconfig startup search, looked at files in their locations, and checked the icon of each of the items. None of the items had an icon that matched this mystery icon.

I like this! If it finds errors your most likely issue is the drive itself. With or without errors, if you ge a stop error durring the scan, you should look at the RAM.

I have an Acer 5920 laptop that recently had a bug in the boot sector. I wound up reinstalling Vista on another partition to be able to get back to the original installation that came with it. Now that it is back working I noticed that only 2G of the installed 4G is showing up in the system or the BIOS. I opened and looked, removed and replaced the two memory sticks and still only 2G will read in the bottom slot. Both sticks read in the bottom slot and the system won't boot up with one in the top slot. Is this a sign of a dead motherboard, or try something else.

i thought maybe it more likely a sign that the laptop only takes 2 gig of ram and no more,but a google search shows it can take 2x2gig ,maybe a dead ram slot ,try a brush or compressed ait to make sure nothing in the slot

"Click" check all boot paths, if they find a fault in one, delete it and reboot if they are OK, "click" on the bottom XP (the top one could be highlighted) "click" move up, "Click" make default, "change" time out to 3 seconds, "Click" apply and exit, "Click" restart.
When your machine starts you will get the msconfig screen again, put a check in the square and "Click" OK

ok you really need to provide more info about the laptop and the crash ,any error messages you may receive ,check event viewer in control panel admin tools.
and when it said you needed to validate it did you try to validated it at the that time .
sounds to me like it had /has a bootleg copy of windows on, and is likely not refurbished but just a cleaned and reloaded laptop .

What about the whole HT Link then? My video card is 9600 GT. I can only replace either the CPU or Vid card because I don't have enough money for both. I know vid card would be the obvious choice for games to run better, but my games ran fine until my CPU started acting up.

PCI. the slot is PCI; doesn't have that tab to fit in the PCI-E. Also doesnt fit in the placement of the PCI-E slot on the motherboard.
