I can go more in depth if needed. My question is can i go higher than 512 cause that seems like its not enough. Why can't i put 2x 1GB sticks in or at least 2x 512MB?

because the computer is old and low end ,and not built for winxp or 1 gig sticks of ram ,you may do a google search or dell search using the service tag# on the case and see if a bios update is available that will change how much ram it can take

hey thnx for replying..i checked for windows update but tht did not show any driver updates.. after a bit of googling i manually downloaded the drivers and launch manager after which it is working brilliantly....

also win7 may not like your netgear router

sorry for my miss understanding about the router , did you try using it wired to the wireless router ,also maybe try ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew

When I start my computer, it keeps coming to a screen that says "a disk read error occured. press ctr+alt_del to restart". I've tried this but it comes back to the same screen. My HP laptop did not come with windows cd. I have to reinstall OS. How can I get the cd?

because you are not correctly using the winxp disk to format and reinstall windows .

first clear this ,its a wireless router and you are using it as a wireless access point [because actual wireless access point are actually just that and more expensive, a good one is anyway ]

how can it hook to the main router wirelessy ,it has to be hardwired from what i have read about this over the years,im no expert in networking ,and also you need to go into its settings and set it to be used as a wireless access point i thing i did on my belkin any way .
as seen in image 2 here they added a d-link wireless access point and you see it is hardwired to the linksys router .

I was thinking about all the amazing things that people go thru to get their pc and laptops fixed so they can run smooth. So I came up with the Idea of something like, maybe it'll be nice if people could post their favorite software that did wonders for them.
In my case I like Device Doctor, it will update all your Drivers on your pc or Laptop, Does a very nice Job,but the best thing of it is that it's free. I also have another that I like the most, Magic DVD Copier, Movie DVD Maker, use them every day.

there is/was a post like that but its in the software section ,not the windows nt/2000/ xp section, it was never made a sticky, so it lost in the list somewhere

all i can say is make sure you have it plugged into correct jack or you have a faulty sound device

had simular problem on a computer a few yrs back and it was caused by a nasty Trojan,and took some to remove ,i had to clean computer of all Trojans first then it let me edit time as posters are suggestion

ok you say after the first phase it reboots ,so the first phase is ,to delete partition ,create a new partition then format the drive ,so formatting is complete, it should start loading windows and after loading for awhile it should restart ,if need be you can remove the disk so it doesn't boot to it again ,and after it reboots it should as for the cd if it need it to load more files

might i suggest going to tools in internet explorer and go to internet options ,advanced and hit reset down bottom to reset inter explorer options

I don't think it is a 64-bit problem because I tried using Windows Vista 32-bit and got the exact same problem. This only happens when I try using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, regardless of the bit. But here is a list of a few sites that I can or cannot access.

unfortunately Caperjack.... I don't get a post screen to even get bak to the bios and change the boot order.... Also is there a different type of motherboard that can b put into the compaq presario v6000 besides the 1 that it came with....

usually a hard thing to do because of front case power button where they plug into the motherboard ,and the pack panel where the mouse and stuff plug in .but if your handy it can be done

I am formatting my ibm desk top pentium 4 and when the first phace completes and it restarts the machine starts from the hard disk and tells me to press any to start from disc and when i press it starts the formatting again what can i do

dont hit to boot from cd the second time let it go to next step

looks like a bad disk ,you need to double click on each error to get more info

did you install latest win7 version of all you device drivers

virus/trojan perhaps ,check out the viruses/spyware and other nasties section of this forum

I've got a problem, I have a machine that is running Win7-x32bit and it can see the machine running Win7-x64bit, but the Win7-x64 machine can't see the Win7-x32. I've tried the trouble shooting within Windows7 etc, nothing fixes it, any idea what is going on ?

are you positive that the 64 bit one has same network name and password as the 32 bit one

it depends into which the printer cable is connected. The problem is that the two computers on the network did not see each other. Do I have to change the workgroup in both to be the same, since the assigned workgroup for Vista is WORKGROUP and the one for XP is MSHOME. I now changed the Workgroup to MSHOME also in Vista, and can see both computers in the workgroup both on Vista and XP.

Any further suggestions?

im not the best with networks ,but i do know that the 2 computers have to be on the same network to work.

hi, boot to the bios/setup and make sure that cd drive is set to first boot
or maybe hit f10 or12 for boot device and chose cd drive with the win7 disk in and reinstall

use your restore disk for the laptop and put laptop back to factory state

What started with an upgrade for my old Dell 1400 ended up being a total rebuild. New case, new motherboard ASRock N68-S w/ an AMD athlon II x2 240 2.8GHz and 2GB of Ram and a new video card Sapphire HD4350. I am using the old HDDs, a 20GB Maxtor and an 80GB Western.
My first problem was the lack of IDE ports, only 1 on the MB which I can understand why because of most things being SATA. To install XP I hooked up the DVD drive and the master HDD and was able to get the system running. I then used an IDE to SATA adapter to hook up second HDD and after trying different settings finally found it but XP wanted me to format it but that's where everything was backed up. So now I have both HDDs on the IDE and am trying to get the DVD burner to work with the SATA adapter and am having no luck. Think I can get this to work or do you think I would be better off getting a new sata dvd burner or a new and faster HDD?
If you are asking why I didn't just buy a new PC, I'm now asking myself the same question but it was a fun build for my 9yr. old son and I.

you could try fixing auto play as i have to from time to time also i would go to device manager and uninstall all in usb section and reboot to reinstall

also bios update should come with a warning ,if done wrong it could render the motherboard unusable ,until a new bios /cmos chip is install in the board ,i never did mine and my board is close to 6 yrs old

try /make sure you are using the latest most up to date sound drivers for your device
