Call MS and explain to them the issue. Your hard drive died, you had to replace it and reinstall XP and now your key for that machine comes up not valid for activation. As long as you have all info from the sticker in case they ask, MS will most likely give you another key. I've done it a few times a couple years ago, same situation. They gave me a new key over the phone, no-charge.
Be calm, polite and act dumb.Hope this helps
Don
not the same thing, this poster cant even get winxp to install because he's using a dell disk on a ibm machine ,and the dell disk will not accept his key to continue with the install .
Dell disks are like that !
is it possible to hook up my pc to my laptop and be able to run my pc from it? ie, be able to see my pc desktop from the laptop and run programs from it.
the answer to that is, no.
The tools drop down box got jammed there for a few minutes!
.
hi,sounds like you have other problems ,not sure what as you say you ran virus scan ,download ATF cleaner from Atribune and clean all to get rid of temp file s-it,just google atf cleaner ,
also check computer for dust inside ,and clean with compressed air or vacum, clean paint brush ,3 of the things i use!
Wish I lived in Canada!
But you can see the dilemma - that 100 Euro could go off a new machine, rather than going down the tube if the old one costs too much to fix and the 100 Euro has to be forfeited.
yeah ,but like bob says in above post ,you could hook it to a friends or neighbors monitor and see if it still has video.
and not all shops here are as cheap as the one i mentions ,a lot of them over charge !
Many thanks.
Yeah, it is very costly.
Toshiba said it could cost between 150 and 300 Euro.
They would take the initial service charge off that, but it would still be very expensive.
I could get a newer machine with higher specs for around 399 now, but I really like the current machine and have used it day in and day out for nearly 4 years.
Wish I could get it fixed at a reasonable price.
That might be possible if it is just the cable.
But I have to commit the 100 Euro just to find out.
And if I decide not to proceed because of the cost then the 100 Euro is gone.
yeah lot of money for sure ,i live in canada ,and fix computer in my spare time .reload window and much more for about 35$ cdn
,and local shop near me,where i help out , would take your laptop and try hooking it to a pc monitor and if it worked tell you that you needed a new lcd ,[they are not into fixing laptop hardware ,except ram and hdd]if you were a regular customer of theirs they would not charge you for the diagnostic ,or maybe charge you 10 or 20 dollars
this will not fix the not closing when you clickon hte x ,but it will /should close the box.
open firefox and go to tools /option and on the main scree check off close the box .see attachment
start hitting f8 as soon as you turn on the computer, you may be missing it when you wait
Thanks caperjack.
It does look like it is cable or backlight according to most people.
Any repair shop I have tried wants 100 Euro - non refundable - just to look at it, here in Dublin.
It might be too costly to repair.
I don't own a monitor.
yeah it is a costly repair ,and new/used lcd can cost 150.00 us or more on e-bay and even more if you buy it from the maker of the laptop.
wouldn't touch that attachment with a ten foot pole .

This is a first post, and I hope that it is in the right place.
My Toshiba XP Laptop no longer lights up.
Info is there and is working, but almost impossible to see.
Got it working a few times by quickly opening and shutting the lid, but no longer works.
Anyone know what the problem is or what it should cost.
I am in Dublin.
Thanks.
sounds like the lcd monitor is gone ,or back lite if it has one ,reall you need to take or send it for repair ,hard to tell from here what it really is ,have you tried hooking it to a PC monitor
Perhaps you could try a linux live CD.
- Let us know how it goes.
yup, i suggested that to so many posters ,but most never try it ,and it could save days of trying to fix a windows hardware problem that is actuall a software problem ,i even have a link in my signature for one .go for it, you will be susprised when it works !or doesn't work ,at least then you know you have a HardWare issue
instead of update try a download then install .

Hi,this inf omight help
Using the HDD Recovery System
Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.
* There are two ways to start the recovery -
o Restart your computer. Then Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.
o In Windows by clicking: Start / All Programs / System Recovery / System Recovery.
* The recovery will load and display a box with one option:
o Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are restored at the end of the recovery process.
To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.
o System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be reinstalled.
o System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers will be reinstalled.
* Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
* You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
* The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.
Thanks. I'm not an expert with computers, so how do I reinstall .NET framework?

on a clone drive does fixmbr work or would it be rendered useless as it warns????
that warning is standard on any install of windows when attempting a fixmbr
Hi everyone,
Sorry to disappoint you but I am back.
nice to see you back ,and that you got it sorted out ,I/we sometimes forget its us/me the helpers that has no life and the person looking for help, lol
good luck
Caperjack - I think it doesn't really matter if they don't respond. We might get some new solutions about this type of problem. Maybe someone looking for a solution might come across this thread.
cant say i don't dissagree ,so many post on daniweb about winxp install problems ,also i lot ,and i mean a lot ,of post here that the original OP never returns ,just a number of us bantering back and forth
OP, hasn't been back in 3 days ,the odds are high that they will never return!!lol
Hello,
I have some trouble when playing sound files with Windows Media Player or Media Monkey. When I play music there are very short interruptions. What could be causing this?
My system has 4GB RAM, an Athlon X2 and Soundblaster Audigy soundcard. It runs Windows XP
Thank you.
where are the sound files located !
im creating a image now to a internal drive i have in my computer and will play with installing from image to another partition on that drive later today
didn't know ,as some of you more seasone pros could have tolde me so if you read my last post . anyway it found the recovery i created on partition 2 but then could not find a drive to copy it to,so in short it only seen the drive as one partition and not two partitions
If you have done a full back-up through 7s "Back-up and Restore" under "Maintenance", is that an image of your hard drive and by using the boot disk it will give you access to that image and thereby allow the image to be copied back to the drive to the state it was when the image was taken? Or is it just a backup program like "Shadow copy"?
im creating a image now to a internal drive i have in my computer and will play with installing from image to another partition on that drive later today
a system repair disk only hold tools/commands to use in a windows repair, recover a crashed OS. .its not a full backup of system,
EDIT=it is also used to restore the computer from a image sorry about that .
Give me some easier ways.
there were so many sites im sure one has the answer! maybe this one .,good luck

I never edited any posts. The post after your first one was the OP's alias and that had links to registry cleaners in it. Now that account is banned, the sig is removed.
The spammers know they will get pinged for putting links in their reply, so they are trying to be a little smarter. The problem with that though, is their IQ does not allow for smart thinking :).
got ya !The end .hehe
You had already posted before I got to it :).
ok,but i don't recall a link in the post ,but anyway next time i will not answer dumb posts !lol
Caperjack. Poster is a spammer with multiple accounts. The old ask a question and answer it from another account, with a 3rd going as witness.
Ok, but when a moderator remove the link the spammer posted in the thread ,why not mark the thread as spam ,for dummies like me !
Whatever command the BIOS uses to launch the OS isn't working, but whatever command the windows CD is using does work. Any idea how to fix this?
did you change boot pirority to the harddrive first in the bios
i deleted upper and lower filters by accident the other day.a forum said if i deleted them my dvd would work again.but t hts the least of my problem here been scrating my head for dayz.my keyboard have stopped working completely.the keyboard works in bios by after tht nothing.i have tried everything reset bios by removing battery.tried the last known good config.i havent got a xp boot disk or any disk.they only thingi can think of is burn the driversi need onto a cd then load on my pc.but obviously it wont just load.i am using a laptop but was wondering if i could connect it 2 pc but dont know howim trying 2 figure out how i would about fixing this its a ball breaker lol .cheer people
ok, are they usb or ps/2 devices ,if ps/2 then you maybe having an issue with the connection[on the motherboard ] on the back of the computer tower ,maybe try a usb keyboard if it not usb allready ,if it usb device try changing the plug to another usb slot ,and no you cant connect the laptop to the computer to use its keyboard !
how can insert the calendar
hi, first you should start your own thread with a whole lot more info as to what you want to do , insert what calander where !this thread is about the power switch problem
,install sp3 it may have a fix for the problem ,
in device manager ,how does the sound device show up with or with out any red or yellow ! marks ,you could try uninstalling it there and rebooting comp and reinstalling ,also a system restore back to before sp2 may be your only fix
Help! I recently installed win xp spack 2 on my Toshiba L10. The problem is after completion I realized I've lost my audio output.
first i suggest you also install sp3 ,
so do tell us what you have tried so far to fix it if anything so we don't start telling you things you already tried !
no. another thing what about "press f2".
f2 is bypassing any bios/setup errors ,hit f1 and run setup/bios ,make sure time and date are correct ,set bios to defaults, save changes and reboot
can anyone help, can i copy pictures off my pc to a sd card, and if so how?:(
hi, if you don't have one or the computer dosn't have one built in you need a USB cardreader to plug the sd card into ,and you simply copy /past or drag and drop the picture to the sd card ,you can do all this in windows explorer [or mycomputer ]
Windows 7 itself contains a program that resizes the partition. If you can install Windows 7 then go to Control Panel --> System and Security --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Storage --> Disk Management Then right-click on the partition you want to shrink and click Shrink Volume. At that point I'm not certain if it was expand the c: primary partition or create yet another partition.
shortcut to all that is right click on mycomputer and click on manage, then diskmanagement ,and this is what you see if you click on to shrink volum ,you pick the size ,but i think bob needs to expand his volum ,in the picture i posted you will see a link to go to the help section of diskmanagement just click it and read on extending a volum.
love that snipit tool in win7
I have a 4 GB Transcend pen drive.
I want to install the OS windows XP in the hard disk.
In BIOS settings i set to first boot from usb.

Why do computer ultimately break down or stop running?
Hi,such a vague question you ask!
there is not a thing on this planet that will not breakdown ad stop working ,the planet included!
I just change my computer power supply recently. .
to a brand new on i assume ,and why did you need to change the psu, what was the old one doing or not doing
Thanks for the back-up caperjack.
The 2 links I provided in my 1st reply for Killroy7777 gave him the same result as your 2 links;
First topic on Google Search, from my 2nd link and your 2nd/3rd link.
2nd topic on Google Search from my 2nd link and your 1st link
Thanks again,Don
EDIT: There is one thing you can check to safely disable services that I have found and is not mentioned in any "Tweaking Guide"
When in "Services", clicking on a service will give you a good description in the left pane.
Now, right click on that service and select "Properties" then click on the "Dependencies" tab, if and only if, there are NO dependencies in both boxes, then it is safe to disable with no adverse effect.
sorry about that i have to confess i didn't click on any of them ,i searched and posted my last links based on what OP said in post #3.
i will step back, way back , and read a bit more befor i go google!
and thanks for the blackviper link ,i thought he was gone ,i remember way back in the eatrrly days of win98 when he had a dowload that would aut set the services he though we didn't need ,but of course he stopped that after a bit ,but i ran it on mine way back when
i never did check on the attachemnt you posted till now ,also im just using www.google.com to find answers for you !my limited experience i cant say for sure what to do ,but i would try and disable bot for awhile ,see if you need them
the second one you have in the green box is reference to this service .
http://www.instantvista.com/application-experience.html
the first one is is talked about here.
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-performance-maintenance/56681-windows-audio-endpoint-builder-high-cpu-usage.html
taken from this google search .

to advise you what services to stop one would need to know what svchost is what .this site is for winxp but the how to see svchost/service is what workes for me on win7.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056
as far as i know, it shouldn't ,cant say for sure though as it is a computer and anything can happen ,if it were me i would do it ,what the fugg
I can't! Take a look at this picture, in which I'm right-clicking the Vista drive: http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/6625/79006895.png
it just so happings im doing allmost the same thing you are doing with your computer ,i have installed a drive and put win7 on it ,and have a drive with winxp on it [2 partirtions ] only difference is our drive 0 and drive 1 are switched around ,i getthe format option on my winxp drive but not the win7 one assuming because its 1st drive and active
did you try going to mycomputer and right clciking on the vista drive and choose vista ,also the manufactors disk like mentions above ,i know it doesn't come with a lot of drives when you buy them but can be downloaded from the hdd makers website ,utility disk
What do you mean? I have Windows 7 installed and working fine, and all of my files are copied over.
What I need to do, is reformat the Drive 0 you see in the picture, without messing up the system boot or anything else.
Can anyone help me?!
hi ,i never backup ,been copying personal file the way you did for years, so your win7 is installed on the 500 gig drive correct ,if yes ,then all you need to do now is right click on 300 gig drive showing vista and chose format ,set as active if and when prompted
Hi caperjack,
http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=dell+driver+download
That one is better.
good one .
,i realise what you were doing with the google ,i've used it myself to get people to google for themselfs ,just got to be careful what we find in the search.
bob we all know most sites that come up first in google are bullshit sites ,i tried 2 of the links that came up and got driver finding tools or worse , i would not want to download to my computer. best advice to poster is to go to www.dell.com site and use the model of laptop or service tag to get the correct divers.
unless you added this sound device this should be the driver for your dell.
