thank you for your honest opinion, but at the moment i cannot afford a new machine. i may be able to save up for a few months for a cheep 'bare bones' type system, but at the moment even that is out of reach .... i do appreciate your time in replying to my plea for advice and help with this issue

hence my answer ,,you board is so old that the biggest cpu it will take is not much bigger than the one in it now ,so any money spent on it is just a wast

you computer is at or below recommended hardware configuration to run winxp effectively,any upgrade it could take will not be enough to help, new machine is in order ,

If you are having trouble with a video in WMP then I would download VLC Player. Works great

get knoppix live from signature and try it ,like poster above suggested ,one of the best way to get to the bottom of a hardware issue especially harddrive one .

the model is HP G60 i tried taking out the ram and i did not hear nothing, i tried move the power cable in the jack no lucky, i guess is the motherboard then what do you guys think?

hard to say from a distance ,really should be looked at hands on by someone with experience in laptops if you want a definitive answer

i think you could just make a image of the drive for when you need to reinstall windows ,and just backup created data on a storage drive ,don't see the need of creating image all the time . fail to see the need for weekly image update

I bought a new laptop which came with windows 7 pre-installed.
I am supposed to have a 500GB HDD space, but when i view "Computer" which also displays the available size, it says i have 11GB of 40 GB left! but i have a 500GB hard drive.

when i switched on the machine i had to press F2 so that windows as well as the hardware could be configured, the laptop has a hitachi drive, i remember i could either choose to partition the drives or not, i chose not to, could that be the problem, do i have to re-configure the machine to show me the correct hdd space?

hi right clik on myomputer lick manage then go to disk manager , look for unpartitioned /unaloated harddrive ,its posiable you may need to format the ret of the drive to create a 2nd partition , thi ite might help a bit with finding the space

your right it doesn't ,but to the best of my knowledge ,ping is a network troubleshooting command to use to see if you can connect to a network ,has no other purpose ,i don't think, so yours' is working ,just not pinging ,so no harm no foul,
maybe a firewall issue .you could disable firewall just to try a ping

if you open mycomputer and go to C:\Windows\Media you will see them all ,they are windows file like i said before ,for windows sound schemes , they were likely there because you told wmp to search your harddrive for music files ,thats the only way they would have gotten there .

They are single items of only around 23 - 39kb which say under 'type' as MID and named as flourish, onestop and town.

ok so they are small midi fle ,likely used by other programs on the computer , wmp may have scaned computter for all file types ,do a start /search for one and see where it loated.

edit ,just searhed my winxp for Floorish and it has it and it in c:/windows/media,so im guessing its used by windows sounds schemes

oh ok nvm I found out how to edit my system's boot.ini file. I found a legit copy of bootcfg.exe (my pc didnt have it), but it was in spanish.. ;) anyways this is the contents of my boot.ini file:

yes just remove that line = C:\wubildr.mbr = "Ubuntu"
or just to be safe make window xp the first to boot to and change the time out to about 3 seconds

hi, you need to edit the boot.ini file to remove the reference to ubuntu ,this one in the example has winxp and win 2000 ,make sure to follow it to the letter ,and ask questions before you edit it if you are not sure ,maybe post a screen shot of your ini file when you open it .

ok i was trying to watch videos on youtube but it is jerky and slow I just thought if i replaced the cpu that would fix that problem but now I see it wont and by the way i do have a faster computer i have nine computers, i buy them fix them up and sale them. i have already replaced the ram and hard drive so I will just get a new motherboard then it will be fully upgraded this is just my hobbie so the time and money dont matter.

check to make sure laptop has latest video drivers ,could be you laptop dosn't have good enough graphic device for playing games ,make and full model# of your laptop migh help ,also check the resolution seetings on the laptop, set to low berhaps

if it have to reactivate ,you simply call microsoft and explain the chang and they will give you a new activation key ,no need to rteinstall windows to do this .i have done this to my maching coultless times because i use to use it as ameants to test cps from customers computer ,have reactvated my winxp several times

not sure but i dough it would speed it up at all ,no more that a regular disk defrag wouldn't do

this my opinion, you are wasting your time and money trying to speed up a 350 , it will never happen ,350 /550 its still going to be slow in todays internet world .I throw these things away Daily!

confusing cpu with ram hopefully ,ram is pc100,not sure what cpu is maybe 1000, winxp[win98 as old as it is would likely work faster ,just to outdated ] likely slowed it down and bit with only 512 meg ram ,cant play videos ? ,what videos ,with what program .

you bought a laptop with windows installed ,then you we and bought another copy of window and install it ,not using the orignal windows ,so the recovery cd you would make are of no use to you as you are not using that version any more ,so no you don't need to make the recovery disk ,unless you think you want to some day go back to the windows that was on the laptop when you bought it .
Edit : actually i don't think you would even be able to make the recovery's any more now that you installed a different Vista

if you leave out the ram and try it you should get a beep sound because the ram is out ,if you don't get that then it maybe serious problem like bad motherboard .what is the model of your HP
I have 3 laptops here various ages ,and none have a light next to the power jack

irst thing i would try is removing the ram ,and then put it back in to make sure its getting a good connection ,if one than 1 ram chip ,remove one and try it ,same results ,remove and try the other one

Running Outlook 10 on XP machine. I saved the PST to an external hard drive and am thinking of uninstalling Office XP pro and reinstalling.

Thank you for your advice on Defraggler. I've installed it and, as you correctly point out, it's solved my defrag problem (Yay;-).
It was actually hiberfil.sys which caused the problem. After defragging, and still with 23% defragmentation, it was easy to see just what was causing it. I simply turned System Hibernation off and on again in power options and Hey Presto! - no more problem. Windows defrag now reports, "No need to defragment this volume".

I shall also try your other suggestion of waiting longer for safe mode to boot (though tomorrow - it's late here in UK now) and will post back my experience when done.

your welcome ,good to see you got it sorted out ,I never did like/use the hibernation feature

3-4 min is not a long wait for safe mode to come up ,wait a little longer ,
also a good free 3rd party defrag is defraggler ,by the makers of ccleaner another great free program ..you could try it and then check win defrag for same message after !

in the BIOS setup, given this: i have 8gb ram, asus p5qe, 500gb hd, 3.0 pentium dual core, do i leave the memory hole enabled and the remapping on? or are there advantages to changing any of that?

Simply,you may drive selected from CD can be read.......... Further format the existing window and start installation process, you will no problem and it will be working after completing step by step instruction
