OP cold be using a bootable disk like Dariks Boot and nuke on one of the many othere boot disk around , on a windows install

.@ caperjack. all case use stand off. it's those screw like what you would screw in you monitor cable pin into..

of course they do ,not sure what my brain was thinking ,thinking something i did many ,many years ago,is coming back to haunt me

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

most if not all newer cases don't have standoffs anymore , the one i have seen/used anyway

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

first thing i think of is the case front power button ,make sure its all connected proper to the board .or leave them all on plugged and use a small flat screw drive to jump the 2 pins marked for the PwSrW wire, from right to left they are pin 3 and 4 ,bottom row , that is if the case doesn't have the power button all wired to one plug.
if you have the manual it on 2-31 /pg 14,
if you don't have the manual ,get it here .

although 120 ft,is not really far ,the max for ca5 is about 300ft.if you are using cat6 [max is about 700ft ]cable then i would try a length of that ,signal deteriorates as it gets farther away from the source

I found that my computer is a Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor.
Can I please get help on the graphics thing?

Centrino is a word Intel used to describe a combination of things in the laptop not just the cpu
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino

as for you problem ,you need to obtain win7 drivers for you video adapter ,what is the exact make and model # of the laptop.
try going to device manager and updating the video driver ,tell it to search the internet for them

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

its on c drive

install recuva ,and get it to search for missing file

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you c/ drive is you windows install ,then you could try Recuva to recover you documents .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

first i have to say why would you format your desktop with out backing up you important data !important data should never only be stored in one place .,ok ,scolding you is over ,

this partition recovery software is what i see them suggesting on other help forums ,i have never used it myself,i don't own important data ,good luck .so i won't be much help in that area , not even sure it will even work for you because you formatted the partition ,after check the main page ,click on fee downloads for some more info
http://www.partition-recovery.com/

is windows install on the C;drive or did you have it on D:

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

im lost ,removing a power supply from a tower to clean it should not make this happen to a computer ,i have cleaned hundreds of them .and only remember this one ,maybe because it only happened a few mnts ago , ,i cleaned one with can air and when i plugged it back in and it popped something inside and needed to be replaced ,
maybe the psu is bad,got another to try

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok, did you install the recommended chipset drive first , then try the sound driver

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Yes the card worked perfectly.

any chance the card has a power plug that got unplugged ,when you took ot the psu to clean it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

also just remembered this ,try running windows updates/custom setting and see if it has hardware driver updates

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

run Speecy again so i can see it all
after Speccy has finished gathering information, click File > Publish Snapshot.
Click Yes. A web address will be displayed.
Click Copy to Clipboard and paste it in your next post.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

one more time i will try ??
when you use the service tag ,does it show drivers for winxp in the list of operating systems ,like my dell .see attachment
its really hard to direct you to drivers for a device we don't know the name and model, sorry

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

of course you cant ,posting way to early in the morning ,lol

so you just bought the new video card yesterday ,did the new card work before you cleaned the psu ,if yes ,try removing and re-seating the video card into its slot

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

a google search of the motherboard in you dell shows people try to do the same thing as you and scan they do show no sound device also .so as i said in my other post ,go to dell site and use you your service tag ,http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=hea no winxp drivers then you are out of luck or you need to find them somewhere else ,and i can find any as i don't even know what sound device you have..

also inwin7 what name is given to sound device win7 installed

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

some more info please like make and model#'s of the computer and the video card

Lets find out what you have inside.

Use Speccy to provide details of your computer's configuration.

Download, http://209.62.107.107/speccy/download/standard , install, and run.
After Speccy has finished gathering information, click File > Publish Snapshot.
Click Yes. A web address will be displayed.
Click Copy to Clipboard and paste it in your next post.
Include your computer's manufacturer and model number, if available.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

no such word as Cant .

when you use your service tag to go to Dell driver download ,does it list drivers for winxp or just Vista and Win7 .
xp will install default/generic sound controllers ans codecs ,check my attachment

also download and use Speccy to show what devices you have in the laptop ,let it do it scan then go to file and publish snapshot and copy to clipboard and post the link here .if you want ,and maybe we could use that info to help find a winxp driver that will work
http://www.piriform.com/speccy

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

sorry i don't have an answer ,looks like a lot of people have the same problem though ,only answer/fix i read in a few of the link in google was to reinstall winxp .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

hi, check your one click setting ,open mycomputer ,go to tools at the top and folder option and you will see one click maybe it got set some how ,
check attachment

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

in disk manager right click on D:\ and G:\ and check delete Volume, then right click them format them to ntfs same as C:\ you then should be able to right click on C:\ and click on extend volume ,i think maybe twice to get it to extend to the other 2 partitions .
that what i just did anyway to a laptop drive i had lying around ,it had 2 partitions now has one bigger one .

also it normal for a 300gig hdd to format to less than 300 ,it all more than i can explain .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

no,that should be fine,i have 2 drives in front of me ,and one is seagate at 0.451A and one Toshiba at 1.0A i use them in an Blac X external usb device and they both perform the same

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

being plugged in over night leave open the possibility of a power serge, although not likely ,but always a possibility .
there are only a few hard drive manufacturers making them and branding them with known names !so im not sure the most reliable ,i like Seagate,Western Digital,[top 10 hdd http://www.reportlabs.com/testbed/version1/hdv1/hdtop10.php] to each there own i think .

one was to extend the live is to avoid writing and rewriting to it all the time ,so i would suggest getting an external drive for storage of music/movies and other thing you may download , downloading them directly to the external drive ,avoiding all the downloading and transferring from one drive to another, and making sure it runs cool, not getting hot is good to watch for .
.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I am pretty sure my HDD should not have died

there is now way you can be sure that it didn't die .they have been know to die with out warning, was it unplugged from the wall outlet over night ,the fact it happened before could have been a warning something was ailing in the hdd

remove and reseat the harddrive ,also remove the power and hold the button in again ,making sure to hold it in for at least 1 min

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

use the f8 key on bootup to access safe mode and see what happens .if you can get into safe mode ,go to control panel /users and create a new user boot to it and see if programs works
