I have a logo that uses a very curly E, & in a couple of places the
line of the E becomes very fine. When I reduce the file size &
resolution, there appears to be dark or dirty spots where the font
"breaks up" in these fine areas. I am using photoshop and do not want
to use any blurring effect.

Hi all,

I have a WD I'm dealing with in Germany & I have to find a way to pay her from here.

I don't want to have to send cash thru the mail & I won't use Pay Pal (theives), moneybookers (never return my e-mails promptly, answer my the phones & I sent them my card info days ago & they still haven't activated my acct.) or Ikibo (I tried to pay for something I bought online & I wasted an hour of my time they were so disorganized, couldn't understand English etc. & the transaction never went thru in the end b/c I was using MC)

Okay I want to put the Google's AdWords conversion tracking JS on my site pages, but I'm confused about a few things...

1. On one board someone said that Google is just doing this to get our information. What do you think?

2. Am I supposed to put this on every page, or just my index page?

3. How do I put it on my shopping cart since a 3rd party handles that?

4. If I put it on my pricelist page, people who go to that page may not buy, they may just be looking for the prices.

5. Even if it goes onto the shopping cart page, how do we know it's for the AdWords & not for free Google listings?

Warning to everyone about this person.

Originally he seemed to know what he was talking about & since I was in the market for someone, I decided to PM him to see if he does this on the side. So I started asking questions which is a normal course of action IMO.

When I got to the point of wanting to potentially hire him, OF COURSE I asked for his phone number. Then when he said he couldn't do the work & had to go thru his company, then of course I wanted the name & phone number of his COMPANY. Dahhh

He gave me some excuse that didn't even make sense to me based on what I know of the English language. All I knew is that he was telling me the prices were $5,000.

So I guess I'm supposed to fork over $5,000 without talking to a real live person. LOL, Yeh right.

Would you trust anyone who REFUSES to give someone their company information?

Why would you say that? Programmers who program in different languages are sometimes more careful and sometimes not, and same with devoted programmers, etc.

I don't see where you getting at with that question, it's very confusing as there really isn't much basis to put that statement on :confused:

My personal standpoint is that new sites I build will be xhtml, the old sites will be whatever standard was popular at that time. I won't be going round every site to update them.

Personally I rarely if ever use javascript. However the official standpoint on that is that if the function of the script is critical to the operation of the page, then it should be done server side.

I didn't see any other forum I could place this in, so here it goes...

I am using a Help Desk feature on my site right now & I'm not too thrilled with their level of service.

When I researched this a few months ago, a lot of them didn't return e-mails or the communication wasn't fluid b/c a lot seem to be overseas.

Does anyone know of a good company that provides help desk that isn't expensive?

The reason I was asking, is b/c a potential programmer I might be doing biz with stated right off the bat he wanted to use Perl (sorry for the mispell) instead of PHP & I wanted to check what others thought.

He is a very devoted programmer who takes his time to do it right.

Would it be safe to assume that most Perl programmes are like that?

PHP is much faster than slow as heck Perl. Perl must run in /cgi-bin/ folder I believe.

PHP has much, MUCH better integration with the other free, open source database, MySQL.

PHP + MySQL are like buddies - when you think of one, you immediately think of the other.

Also, with the new release of PHP 5 - what is there to NOT like? :D

Well I'm trying, but it still won't compress it enough.

In fact, it makes the file larger w/ WinRAR then with WinZip :cry:

Do you know anything about compressing just the gifs yet keeping them a high resolution?

I'm having a problem.

I just had someone fancy up my new e-book with real photos & colour & whatnot & now it's up to the size of 20 MB.

WinZipping it doesn't help & I need to compress it so much that I'm stuck whether I should use Total Commander or WinRAR.

First I need to be able to send it to people & eventually I will be uploading it onto my server & people will be downloading it from there, but it still needs to be easy to manage. With my other manuals I use Total Commander to do that using their self extracting feature, but none of the files I have on my server are as big as this new one.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know what he is.

He claims to have worked as a VP of a large company & his background is with DBs & he knows PHP.

I started getting worried when a few things didn't make sense, then this issue & now today another issue.

My problem is, he knows my user names & p/wds on some of my pages & since he was to be a suedo partner, I'm nervous, but I have to cut my ties. I can't keep wondering whether he really knows what he's talking about. :o

Is he a logo programmer? An HTML programmer? People really abuse the heck out of that title. In all honestly, any decent programmer will tell you that there will be a change in your web pages even if you have the smallest amount of PHP code on your page.

Other than that, I would say pretty much the same thing everyone else said with extra mayo.

What does that referral count as anyway?

I'm trying to see if this programmer knows what he is talking about.

I'm going to be changing all my files from .phtml to either .htm or .php

This programmer is saying that I can change it to .htm & it won't harm anything b/c there is little to no php on the site.

Another programmer is telling me NO, I have to make it .php

That should certainly lessen the dangers--and postpone them for sure.

I still think the return won't be worth the effort though. What you could do is separate out say 1,000 addresses to test. If you get a good return from them, keep going. If not, you won't have wasted much effort.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, just want to mention something to be careful of:
The real problem in practice is not if it's legal . The practical problem is, if someone reports your email as spam, can you prove prior contact?

In the current climate, you'll usually be regarded as guilty until proven innocent, and in some cases may not even get a chance to prove innocence. So there's a real danger of losing your hosting or ISP account.

There's another potential problem with 40,000 emails gathered over 6 years. Many of them will no longer exist, and larger ISPs could flag you as a spammer if they see a lot of emails coming from you to non-existent addresses on their network.

You could find your server blocked from emailing Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, EarthLink etc or your ISP could come under pressure to shut you down.

If I were in your situation, I wouldn't try to email these 40K addresses. Chances are only 5-10K are still valid, and I doubt you'd get 100 sign-ups out of that. The risks look too high to me for such …

Google toolbar has a "block/allow popups" feature. So you can toggle between them as required, or whatever as whenever. :)

So you are saying there is no point in DLing the Google bar :cry:

You can disable the popup blocker on IE, FF allready has an inbuilt popup blocker if you turn it off and i dont know about anybody else but i dont see the green bar in FF so i dont think that appears in there :(

I forgot to add ... so I'll do that now. To find out the PR of any page, all you need is to download the Google IE toolbar and to enable showing PageRank. Then, as your browse the web in Internet Explorer, the PR of any page will be shown as a green bar.

I am a coder an not an artist, but that is why I work with a graphic designer! :cheesy:

Anyways, CSS (Cascadign Style Sheets) are very powerful and that is what I use for formating and positioning. It is a lot easier than table layouts and you can do alot more. I have the graphic artist create an image in Photoshop, then I have at it. I slice the image up, create the DIVs, position them with CSS, and then you have a beautiful site.

In my opinion, the toughest part is creating a nice design and that is why I use an graphic artist.

I have attached one of the sites you had with some of the divs I would create. The neat thing about CSS is that the DIVs can overlap, like for the Nav bar.

Open Outlook Express, go to Tools, then Accounts, pick the email account you're using in the list, (probably says default next to it), and press the Properties button. In the User Information area, does it have the name and email address you want there? Be sure the Reply address has the correct address in it, (or no address at all if it's the same as the email address in the box above).

Well I FINALLY got almost everything moved over from the old computer system to the new computer system & here's my problem.

I was using OE b4, so nothing has changed as far as e-mail programs go.

Now what's happening is my default e-mail address Michelle@exoticpublishing.com doesn't seem to be working properly or I'm thinking it's the whole OE that's screwed LOL

Another e-mail address in my e-mail identity list seems to be taking over... Business@exoticpublishing.com & I don't know why. I'll reply back to an e-mail or forward an e-mail that was written from the Michelle or another of the various e-mail addys I have, & it will switch to Business@exoticpublishing.com in the "from" field. It happens the minute I hit "reply".

This has started to cause many problems for me b/c people don't recognize the e-mail addy, my yahoo posts come back undeliverable b/c it doesn't recognize the e-mail addy, etc.

The only other time I have encountered this problem is when I was testing out new spam programs that had to be DLed onto my computer. I am NOT testing any spam software & I haven't in years.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Help !

My integrated board's video card must have gone (no comments pls., I didn't have enough money at the time), so we have to replace the WHOLE MB.

The problem is, Win 2000 doesn't allow you to just copy on top of itself.

So we have to reformat.

I have 4 drives on my puter right now & someone is suggesting I reformat H & then make it C & then move everything over.

How does this sound to you all & I need to know how move everything over from one drive to a next easily without screwing up any data.

Some of the programs I can reinstall, others I can't.

Hi all,

I just wanted to let everyone know that my computer was to blame for the problem :(

I had no idea that something has gotten into my computer & put certain sites in my restricted sites area.

It might have been a spyware program that was recently installed, but shouldn't it tell you that it's going to restrict site A, B, etc.?

Even Overture was on there & I don't even go to that site.

Once I found a supervisor to talk to, Constant Contact was very helpful in troubleshooting the problem.

Now I can stop looking for an e-mail management system.

I use constant contact, and they are about as good as it gets. You might want to check out road runner too, but I'm pretty sure constant contact is the tops for email campaigns.

I have also used a program called OEM Pro which is awesome. You can buy this for a few hundred bucks and then you don't have to use an external server. I think they have all the features constant contact does, and if not, they at least compete.

As far as sending out emails, I think you're right, since you have had contact I don't think it violates a spam law, but I would do some research to see if there is a time limit on the contact just to make sure. As for preventing the people you send it out to deleting it or reading it and hating you, it will take …

I started off with one ezine company that didn't have a lot of the features that are standard, so I started looking around.

I came across Constant Contact which I thought was a great company, excellent features, great customer service etc., but than I started to have problems logging in.

They tried to make it like it was my computer, but I wasn't having any other problems with any other site.

This also concerned me as the e-mail management company has to have excellent servers in order to ensure your ezines go out right after you send them.

So, I'm trying to research who is the next best thing. I think BCentral was mentioned, but I'm not even sure that is what I want & I was cared off when I learned MS owns it LOL

Constant Contact's site was excellent & really laid everything out, was colourful, so you know their templates were nice & I could read all the features they offered at a glance.

Does anyone have any recommendations on who is just as good as Constant Contact & has excellent servers?

Both Overture and Google Adwords have quite good ROI if managed properly, however if you dont do your research ANY PPC can cost you a lot and make you a little. Its all about finding high converting words that dont cost more per acquition in traffic then your making from your net profit.

Honestly, the best thing you could do if you wanted him to learn that stuff would be to do it with him.

But if you want him to know how the OS reacts to things and the hardware side of things, no better place to start than buying components and assembling them with him, then installing an OS, imaging it with whatever choice you make, then putting him in front of it and letting loose. He'll break so many things and learn so much by doing it himself, it will be unbelieveable to you.

You mean like your message? Just use the Reply with quote button (on the message you want to reply with a quote to) or use the

[ /Quote] tags (minus the spaces) and the text between them will be in the bubble.

And see attached image for the answer to your other question. Just select from the Thread Subscription section of your reply or new thread, the choice of notification you want.

MX 2004 is a muhc better app for a lot of reasons. Stick with that, learn that, and you will be ahppy you did.

I never used templates because I always used includes for portions of the site I want to be able to alter site wide. Try this ep,

Open a template file
take a portion of it (like the left nav for example)
copy it into a new file (make sure there is no extra code in there like <html><body><title> etc
save that file in a folder called includes or something
remove all your files from the template system
find and replace the code contained in that include in all files except the include itself with a server side include code (if you don't know how to write that, then click in the visual area the include belongs and use the DW menu to insert a server side include
and... viola. You are now using the more advanced method of server side …
