Hey all,

I have a ViewSonic E90FMB 19" CRT monitor w/flat screen. I've used it a lot for about 2 straight years. I now have a lap top and the monitor is sitting in my bedroom doing nothing. Still has great picture. I am wanting to get rid of it and get it out of my way.

I payed ~$240 but now Froogle has them from ~$220:

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Viewsonic+E90FMB&hl=en&btnG=Search

My Price: $99.95 +sh (the title is wrong, sorry)
(shipping ~$40)

Here is a picture of it:

Edit: When powered on after sitting around for a number of weeks, the monitor takes a few boots to get back to where it should be. After it is connected to a PC that is used often it is fine. For some reason it's just when I let it sit and power it back up. The screen goes blank for a few boots, but then clears up and stays cleared up until turned off for a number of weeks again.

Well I've gotten somewhere with this. I found a site that said to type in this command, so I did.

# yum install xorg-x11-drv-fglrx kmod-fglrx glx-utils

My resolution is where I want it, but my screen looks like this:

I don't know if you can tell, but there are verticle lines on the taskbar. I can also tell when scrolling through web pages.

Here's a link for AIM on Linux:
http://www.aim.com/get_aim/linux/latest_linux.adp

They provide good installation instructions there, so you shouldn't have a problem.

I couldn't find anywhere to download the files. Do I just download the ar.gz file files?

Hey guys,

I have Fedora6 installed on my Dell laptop. I am a complete noob at any Linux os. I have a few things that I would like some help with.

1. I have no clue how to install drivers (or programs for that matter). I need drivers for my graphics card (Radeon 9700?) and my scroll wheel on my Logitech mouse doesn't work.

2. I also need help finding the installation files for AIM, as I have a friend who can help, but phone-chat isn't very productive when issueing commands

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm sure I'll have more questions later... xD

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Ok I'll try.

Security isn't an issue though.. since it's my brothers. xD

Hey guys,

real brain power tester here...
In WinXP, how can I get the show desktop icon back in the quick-launch?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Right-a-mundo.

I tried a similar scenario with my other brother's PC; windows XP. He gets a login error when trying to use the account I set him up. But if he logs in as administrator, off he goes to my system. This is what makes me think it's a user error on my part.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

The printer server is Windows Server2003. Sorry, I guess I didn't mention that. I looked in the Additional Drivers... section but it's all Windows based. Is there anywhere to store the Mac drivers?

I will try part b) and let you know what happens. Currently I'm having a network user problem which I've posted about here: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread68841.html

edit) We tried part b) and he can see my computer. I think his login just isn't working correctly.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

hey guys,

I am running server2003 on my laptop at home. I just installed a printer and I'm wanting to share it to my brothers; one with PC, the other with a macbook.

I've set up user accounts for both of them, but when they attempt to login through the network it gives an error. If the admin account is accessed all is well. I'm sure this is a really simple fix; any help is greatly appreciated!

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to share my HP C3100 series printer to my brothers macbook with OS-X. I'm not sure what to do. I have the Mac disk, if that will help me at all.

He can find my laptop and login to it with the u/n I made for him, but my printer isn't listed.

I have thought of going with a Fedora version. The only problem I may end up running into is, the book we have is Red Hat 9. Are there a lot of differences between the two, especially pertaining to command lines? If not, I would probably benifit more from learning Fedora anyways.

The computer lab at the school has Fedora, and our prof. said if he counts a question wrong, but we know it will work in Fedora, to show him and he'd count it right.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

I'm in a Linux class right now; never used Linux before. I was given a copy of RH9 with my book and have it installed but can't load my nic on it. I go to terminal and type /sbin/ifconfig eht0 up which works. But then I try to use the dhcpcd command and it says command not found? could someone give me a hand? I have a Dell laptop with integrated nic.

Hey Justin,

I currently have the A+ and MCSE; I'm testing for net+ this summer.
If all you are going to be doing is repairing computers, A+ will be a good start. Actually, A+ is a good start for any IT career; it is the foundation of computer information.

The MCSE is typically for network administrators. You have to be very determined and self motivated to go through the entire MCSE program alone. It is a series of 7 exams, each with a book about 2 inches thick. MCSEs typically go through college programs or vocational schooling to train for their exams. If you are wanting to become an MCSE, you're saying you basically want to maintain servers for a company. Would you rather fix computers or troubleshoot servers?

In a nut shell the A+ and Net+ are very obtainable within the year. MCSE, studying alone, can easily take up to 3 years.

What is your real passion? How long are you willing to spend studying for exams? What is your goal from this?

Answer all of these, and I'm sure you will find the certification best for you.

PS) do not attend a boot camp of any kind!! This is how I got my MCSE, and I'll be the first to tell you I didn't learn hardly anything. They basically taught the test for 14 days. If you want a realy understanding of the material, dig into the books or find a …

I had this problem at work. There is a local security policy setting you can set on the DC to not force complex passwords.

If you are familiar with Group Policies, you can also apply tons and tons of user specific settings through them.

The local security policy is here:
start>control panel>admin tools>local security policy>account policies>password policy

I had to change this, as we do not allow passwords.

My mom was telling me a similar story... I have attened 4 semesters of vocational classes (during highschool) through which I studied for my A+. I'm only 19, but am working at the IT manager at an engineering company... It was the cert that raised an eyebrow when I was first interviewed.

My mom works with a lady who's relative graduated college with a BS (I think) computer degree of some sort, but couldn't get a job because of no certifications. He's now attending classes I think to start working on some.

Dell is weird...

What it is, is optiplex and dimension are both considered home and home office, but show up in the small business section as well.

Actually I think only workstation they sell is the precision series. I'm not sure what the big deal is, but my Dell Rep is telling me his hands are tied on this one.

well, i had the same problem. i have had my 15" fs dell since august 2003. never had a moments problem with it. until early december. i left my pc on and when i came back 30 minutes later it had the "white screen of death". nothing cleared it so i rebooted several times and it fixed itself. i had intermitant occurances for about a week. i would do all kinds of things in an attempt to clear it - the self test worked sometimes. anyhow, i did get online long enough to discover people discussing the soldering fix. i am a handy guy but had never done anything that tedious  . but i figured what the heck? what have i got to lose? if i ruin it i am not out anything because i would have had to replace the monitor anyhow. so, i get my small screwdrivers together and my soldering iron and solder. i take this thing apart like i just knew i would never get it back together correctly. i located the suspect pins and lo and behold the solders were split and crusty looking whereas all the others were smooth and shiney as they should be. then with trembling paws i dripped the hot solder on the pins and voila!! :p it was done. it took about 10 minutes to put everything back together - which gave me ample time to say a very long prayer while doing it. ;) i plug it …

Well that's tough considering your circumstances... PCI cards generally aren't the best performing, especially for demanding programs such as gaming.

With that said, don't break the bank either. Assuming you're currently using int. graphics according to output of the software you ran, you would deffinately notice a difference in gaming with this card.

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200105+4294967168+502409+4294966731+4294966358&Ne=303923&product_code=333475&Pn=GeForce_FX_5500_Video_Card

If this isn't the exact pricerange you were looking at then go here and browse around:

http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?N=200105+4294967168+502409&Ne=502405&Cn=Computer_Upgrades_Video_Cards

nVidia typically has a better reputation of being a gaming card, but oppinions vary. Hope this helps ;)

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Apparently your system only supports PCI cards.

You can choose from any of these cards...
http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?N=200105+4294967168&Ne=300752&Cn=Computer_Upgrades_Video_Cards

These are just examples. Better prices may be elsewhere, such as pricewatch.com just make sure you get a pci card and not a pci-e (express).

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Dimension is the home desktop series. Precision is the business workstation series, which is what I'm getting.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

unfortunately the only option is a firegl or quadro. Dell won't allow a gaming graphics card in a business workstation.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey everyone,

So I'm wanting to suggest purchasing new equipment for my firm. We currently buy a new system here and there for employees, but I'm thinking it will be more cost effective to purchase in bulk every 3 years; about 97 computers. I work at an engineering company, which depends on the functioning of computers to opperate.

I was advised by a Dell Rep. to consider leasing the computers. I will post his email:

Caleb,

To further investigate this possibility, perhaps you may want to present
true leasing. With a true lease, you are paying "rent" each month and
expensing the payments each month. The computers are then replaced at
the end of the lease contract. Because Pentree is well established, the
firm qualifies for 0% interest on true leasing for 24 months.

Using the $1679 per system price from my quotes. Each system will bear
a burden each month of $69.1572 and each month there will be sales tax
added to that amount and possibly monthly property taxes to depending
upon the local property tax laws. True leasing is "renting" and if after
24 months, you either enter into a replacement contract and get all new
systems again or pay a "fair market value" for the systems or pay for
another 12 months and then you own the systems.

Right now we have some promotional interest rates that are Negative 5%
for 24 month …

Hey guys,

I'm looking to purchase a new computer, and I was wondering what card would be best. My options are these two:

The 768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX
or
The 256MB nVidia Quadro FX 3450

I'm going to be using this PC primarily for compiling program and schooling but I do want a nice card for gaming. I know the GeForce series is engineered for gaming and the Quadro is for CAD work. But will there be a big difference? The price is about the same. Which would be the best buy for gaming performance?

Not familiar with media center settings, but I do know that XP defaults to a restrictive set of permissions. Check just to humor me, as that is a very typical error message in result of restrictive permissions ;)

Do you have a user account setup on the PC you're trying to access?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Ah I c,

I am not sure if that is possible outside of Active Directory. If you added the user to a group it would still be a member of that group only on their computer.

I'm pretty sure you would have to create the user on your local machine in order to administer permissions to them. I could be wrong...

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey Seten,

Allowing permissions is the key for allowing/restricting access to certain files.

One key point to remember while setting permissions is this: Permissions are inherited throughout directories (unless disabled). Meaning, if you allow a user access to a folder, he/she also has access to every file and folder inside of that one unless otherwise specified.

Do do this you need to ensure that every user you are wanting to allow access has a user account on your machine. Check this with Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->User Accounts

After ensuring the users are created go to a folder you have shared and do the following:

Right click-->Sharing and Security-->Permissions

I would set this to Allow everything for Everyone. I do this because the Security settings of the folder will take precedence over the permissions set here.

After that, go to the security tab. Find the user you're wanting to allow/restrict access to and select the security features you want to implement. This can take some testing to get right if you're not familiar with user security and permissions. If you have any questions let us know; I'm sure someone will be around.

Hope this helps; sorry if I misunderstood the question

chow!

Hey moraira,

very good advice \/

Why don't you just import the accounts over to one machine? This will save you alot of hassle, and you'll get to keep your contact lists, saved emails, etc.

Here's the procedure.

Open outlook on the computer you don't want to use as the email computer.

Exporting from Outlook:
click File-->Import and Export...-->export to a file-->highlight (.pst)

Click Personal Folders and check the box which says "include subfolders"

Click next--> browse to your desktop and click save.

Importing to Outlook:
Save the file you just exported to a floppy disk or something and put it on the desktop of your email computer.

Open outlook and do the following:

File-->import and export...-->Import from another program or file-->scroll down to (.pst)-->Browse to the file on your desktop and click next.

Exporting from Outlook Express:

On your non-email computer

File-->Export--> Messages or Addresses (you will have to do this twice if you want to keep both)

Messages will export your messages to Outlook
Addresses will export your addresses to a text file (browse them to your desktop)

Importing from Outlook Express:

Open Outlook (not express) and follow the file-->import export--> for your addresses.

this should cover your whether you're using Outlook or Outlook Express; of coarse outlook is going to be easier.

Let us know when you've gotten this far and someone will …

Well, wireless issues are not always network related; the problem is actually some sort of router or workstation configuration 90% of the time. I also think it would be easier for those who don't know a lot about wireless or those who specialize in wireless to find the threads where they are most needed

But valid point, I guess we can scratch this idea.

Hey guys and gals.

I'm not really new to DaniWeb, though I have been absent for a while. I am going to try to pick up the pace, and try to post every day. I have never really made a formal introduction, so here it goes.

My name is Caleb and I'm currently enrolled in a COSC BS program. I am not sure of the education path I'm going to take after that, though I am seriously considering doctoral studies in networking. Networking is my passion; I love every bit and layer. I will be recieving a major in networking when I graduate, and will hopefully be able to pass the CCNP exam that summer, as our networking course is an affiliation of cisco networking academy.

I currently have my A+ and wil attempt my Network+ this summer. I am also an MCP in Windows XP, and an MCSE in Server2003. I will be the first to admit I should not be an MCSE. I attended a two-week boot camp in Tampa, FL where I basically had the tests taught to me 8 hours a day for two weeks. I would not attempt to clep out of any college programs related to the MCSE, because I know I am no as qualified as the certificate shows. The only accomplishment of the two week stay in Tampa is I was one of I think 4 people to pass all seven exams.

Plain and simple, I love computers, …

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

And who knows... eventually in my spare time I may try to become a Mod for the Networking section of DaniWeb ;)

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I have noticed bunches and bunches of threads about wireless configurations, namely in the network config area. Perhaps a new board could be created pertaining soley to the setup and troubleshooting of wireless networks?

Just a thought.

Are there any appliances between the access point and the computer (eg. fridge, freezer, etc.)? Also, I lose internet connection occasionaly when anyone uses a specific type of cordless phone at the house. The base may have nothing to do with it; your problem may be in the signal from the phone itself.

Have you considered a booster?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Cisco for hardware (considering they control 90%+ of the internet). Software... Red Hat. I have no experience at all with Linux systems, and am actually an MCP. That's how good Red Hat is... I've never used it and I love it.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

to find out the aqdress of the router plug your PC into a WIRED port on the router and get connected, then go into network connections under XP, right click on the wired lan card and choose status - go into the support tab and see what the "default gateway" reads - take this ip and type it into IE preceeded by http:\\ - this is the routers configuration interface and from here you should be able to do as described in the earlier posts

Have you tries this yet? Remember, NetGear is weird sometimes. They, for some reason, do not like to go by the standard admin and blank for the access to the control panel. You may need to look at the original box, or google the model number to find the appropriate username/password. Atleast this was the case for our WAP at the office.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Well my dream job is probably to be the network administrator for an entire building; a building that means something. I would love to work for Google or the like, but I also want to stay on the east coast. I want to be the head ITT; the IT supervisor. Along with this, I would love to be in charge of not fixing workstations, but administering servers, tweaking the network, planning for the future. I am 19 right now, and am the network admin for a ~20 user network. I love my job, but hate the way things are organized. I have to report to an AutoDesk engineer as my IT supervisor. I have so many ideas for the company, and we're an engineering corp.; of coarse we can afford the expansions. But unfortunately I am not trusted. Because of my age and lack of experience I am thought of as nothing more than a comodety. I know this because they have limited my hours every week. I am not aloud to work more than 20 hours per week. This is fine with me, since I'm in school, though it is a blow to the self esteem knowing my company may never see the need for a full time IT. I've taken into account the fact that I'm completely overhead; I make no profit for the company. I would just like to be somewhere that the people I work with... well... respect me for …

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey everyone,

I'm currently enrolled in 4 year computer science BS program with a major in networking and hopefully a minor in programming. I am wanting to attain as much knowledge as possible, but am unsure of what the best route to take is. I will provide my plan and ambitions; any help or suggestions to aid my decisions would be most welcomed.

After receiving my BS in COSC w/networking major I am considering returning for another year+/- to receive a major in programming as well. After this I hope to attend Va. Tech to study for my masters. I figure my masters should take a year to a year and a half. I have recently considered going further, attempting doctoral studies.

I am not sure of good COSC doctoral programs on the east coast (maybe va tech offers it?). I am also wondering how a PH.D. will help me in the long run. I would love to work for a huge enterprise as the head network administrator, but I do not want to cross the line of being over qualified. That being said, I would like to fall back on teaching at a university during retirement.

Could someone more experienced and knowledgabel tell me the pros and cons of my plan?

Thanks a bunch!!

-Caleb

Hey everyone. I'm the network admin for a ~20 user network, but I am not very experienced in a lot of ways. Myself and another tech recently changed the domain name from .com to .local due to DNS problems. I've noticed that the SYSVOL and NETLOGON folders are showing up when users browse the network.
