I've never heard of it doing anything like that. If it was doing any of the things that you mentioned; as it stands now, that'd be against the law.
If anything, it would try to make sure that if you downloaded any DRM (Digital Rights Management) enabled music/files, that you weren't subverting any copy-protection measures set in place by those files. But, I wouldn't worry much about any of those other concerns.
If you're really concerned that something like this might be happening with your system, then put it behind a Linux or BSD-based hardware router, and run a sniffer on it. That will tell you if anything's going on. Heck, that's a good idea for any Windows machine!
I'm thinking it might be best for you just to locate your original Windows installation media and do a clean OS reinstall. It sounds like you've got several fun driver conflicts and screw-ups going on in there.
Can you even devise a means to back up your data?
Open IE.
Click on Tools, then Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab. There should be a button there that says "Reset Web Settings...". Click on that-- it will reset all of your Internet Programs to their default settings.
Have you just tried deleting that "Secondary IDE Controller dual Fifo" and restarting the computer? Sometimes, doing that will reinitialize the IDE controller, and cause the system to rescan everything. If that doesn't work, it's possible your motherboard's IDE controller is dying on you.
Are they running any Java or Flash ads?
There may not be anything wrong with your computer, it may be with their server. Try to find out if other users are having the same trouble. It may be an issue you need to bring up with the admin on that forum.
i did check this out.. in my case (W2K) it was located in
C:WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
hosts lmhosts and so on were found. even the comments were very unixesque.. thats
scary. microsoft incorperated a littlebit of a unix style architecture under its
transparent skin during the late 80s and early 90s.. (they copywrighted lmhosts LOL)
even the comments look like they're straight out of a programmers personal $HOME/bin directory..
Yup. Reason for that is the bulk of Microsoft's original TCP/IP code actually came from BSD.
I'm thinking these guys are probably right, more than likely. Check out our Security Forum's sticky post regarding "Helping Yourself" . It's also included as a link in my sig for your convenience.
Exactly what update are you talking about? I've not run across any of this yet.
Can you post a link to the update you've downloaded?
any help?
Give it just a bit! Maybe someone is checking over your code right now.
I'm not a Java programmer-- I just moderate the forum. Otherwise, I'd help :)
What have you done so far on this?
Post some code, and tell us where you're stuck. Perhaps others can provide more insight.
bah I got it fixed, no worries.
What'd you end up doing?
I know this isn't something that would concern me too much, but for posterity, perhaps others would like to know. Besides, it would let us mark the thread as "solved" :)
If you have a gmail account, PLEASE invite me. My email adddress is Rocket0201@aol.com
Thanks,
C++
Wow... nobody's emailed me for one.... I still haven't figured out how to cut and paste the links either! :(
There's really not a way to "advance" past Guru Techie. The way you become a mod is to be promoted by Dani. Either that, or if you pay to advertise on the site, you get made a colleague.
This link to the RUTE User's tutorial should get you started nicely. It should help you get going with Apache, the web server, it may show you how to associate PHP and some CGI extensions to it, too. There should even be a tutorial on FTP, too. It's possible that it will have a quick setup guide on doing a mail server.

For the other functions, Red Hat includes webmin, as does Mandrake, I believe. There are many distros which have that. mySQL has excellent documentation on their website, www.mysql.com . As for the Counter-Strike server, you'll probably want to check the website of the makers of that game for setup information.
Yes its behind a linsys router.
You'll either need to put your server in the router's DMZ if it has one, or forward the router's port 80 connection to your box's port 80. More than likely, that should handle things for you.
This normally works, but don't be too surprised if it actually turns out that your ISP is blocking incoming port 80 connections. If they don't, then don't be too surprised if the connection actually runs SUPER slow...
Have you run any spyware removal tools?
Check out the "Helping yourself" thread at the top of our Security forum. I'd be willing to bet that using your new DSL connection brought in a bunch of nasties...
I have a computer dedicated to video editing - which is highly sensitive to all the mucking around an internet connection causes. I have Win XP and a DSL connection. Plenty of hard drives, memory, etc. What is the best way to prevent the internet from making changes? I have tried fire walls, spam blockers, etc. I wonder if a dual boot system - two Win XP or Win XP and Win 98 - would be workable. My thinking is that XP could be used for video editing and the other one for the internet which would keep the editing system clean. Any suggestions??
Thanks,
Jerry
Sure, you can do this. Just make two partitions on your drive.
If you do Win98 + XP, make sure that 98 is installed to C: and XP on D:. Install 98 first, and then install XP, which will cause XP to automatically detect the 98 install, and it should dual boot by itself. Doing two copies of XP should go the same.
Personally, though, if I were you, I'd look at doing some kind of hard drive caddy type solution, if you really want to keep each install "clean". Since dual-booting requires you to shut down or reboot anyways, just get some removable hard drive cages, and swap the drives back and forth when you want to use one OS or the other. That will really keep things "clean", because there will only be one hard drive at a time …
Man! I never get a G-Mail invite. Oh well, if I had it, I'd use it... If not, oh well. Life goes on!
PM me or send an email to the account I listed in the Gmail sticky thread at the top of the forum. I can probably help you out... ;)
Give it some time!
Somebody should be able to help you out here. You posted the question in a timeframe where there aren't many people on board. Give it a day or so, and someone should be able to help you.
May the Lord be with you.
wondering if anyone can help with my post "USB not responding to multi-accounts" ??
da_muslim,
Please stay on-topic to the thread. If you've posted another thread in this forum, others will be looking at it.
Is your system behind a router or anything?
Well, I'm a dummy. I can't figure out how to copy these links.
If you guys want a Gmail invite, and can't get one from these links, I've got 6 myself. Shoot me an email at the address I posted above, and I'll hook you up. :)
Yes, the post was a joke! I hope you guys knew that.
Figured as much... being as such, let's move it over to /dev/random. :p
Usually, if you've got some kind of digital camera, or a PDA, you'll have some kind of device, like a compact flash card, or a multimedia card. You can use a card reader to let your computer read those cards, instead of plugging the device directly into the system.
You won't be able to run a .exe file on the Mac. They're written for a completely different platform. Unless you run Virtual PC, or something.
im pertty sure adaware doesnt run on a unix/linux box.. ive only ever used it on windows..
unix/linux systems contain a /etc folder.. you can delete everything in there if you like
but it will not be pretty. matter of fact you get to do an unscheduled failure simulation
with active restore from tape or the like via ufsrestore.kinda like the redneck computer virus. "% rm -Rf /* <CR>" or "%rm /lib/ld.so.1"
either is a bad day in the end. sounds like someone was pulling your leg.
They might have been pulling his leg, but there is indeed an etc folder in Windows, like I said above. Next time you're near a Windows machine, check it out.
What exactly do you mean? This isn't some kind of assignment, is it?
We're not here to do your homework for you. Please ask some questions, and we'll do our best to answer them. Furthermore, please don't put "emergency" in your thread's title. Asking for precedence or implying urgency over someone elses issue in a forum, especially a FREE one, is very rude.
do you know how to use "FreshDiagnose" this is a program that scans your computer kinda. that is how i found out about the information but i don't know how to use it
Don't worry about that program-- you don't need it. Just focus on using the information you already have about your sound card, and try to locate drivers with that information.
It'll all be well and good if any Pentium over Pentium 500 runs faster than the previous. If Intel does stupid things like come out with a Pentium 510a that is actually slower than the 500, it'll suck, and lead to great confusion. This is my only concern on the change to the CPU numbering system, it has happened with other products, (Nvidia's graphics cards come to mind, you needed to do a LOT of research before buying an Nvidia card a few years ago, when GF2's, GF3's, GF4's, and MX's were all floating about at the same time...GF4MX's often could be beaten easily by GF3's, even some GF2's could outperform some of them!).
Here's hoping that Intel's not opening a kettle full of worms, or worse, cockroaches.
That's basically what they've done, though. I forget the numbering system off the top of my head, but the rightmost signifigant digit indicates the chip "series", and the 10's and 1's digits actually compare the performance and "features" relative to the other chips in the series. An example:
The 500 and the 600 series of P4s aren't comparable.
in the 500, there's 515, 525, and 535. 525 should outperform the 515, and 535 should outperform both of the lower numbers. But...
Then, there's the 600 series. Say, 615, 625, and 635. Same as before , 625 outperforms 615, 635 outperforms 'em both. But here's the funny stuff....
Does a 615 outperform a 515? Maybe... maybe not. The numerical …
Personally, I try to find others' reviews on memory. Let them waste their money before I do! ;) I've had situations where I've bought brand name memory, like Crucial and Kingston, yet still had memory compatibility issues.
Are you tuning this system for performance? If so, I'd try to stick with all the same brand and speed of memory, and even try to go for the same size DIMMS in all of the slots. If you're running a dual-channel board, that's the best way to get more performance out of your motherboard.
well you can look on the other thread with the info on it because i dont want to write it again
Um... no you don't.
That's what I was getting at-- I merged the two threads together. Now the content of both threads are in this post. Besides, how hard is it to copy and paste, anyways?
If you know the card is called a Riptide, have you just tried doing a Google search using the terms "Riptide" and "sound driver" , or "audio driver", or "sound card driver"? Those cards are actually combo jobs-- sound cards and modems, so even searching for "Riptide"+"modem driver" will assuredly yield something. I've installed drivers for these on HP machines-- there are drivers out there.
nosound,
Please keep your questions about lack of sound confined to the thread you've already started. It gets confusing keeping track of all of the threads, it clutters up the board. Additionally, there's no reason not to keep posting in the original thread-- there's no limit to how big a thread can reasonably be.
what OS is this? XP?
You could always try to check out the Audio Properties control panel. Make sure that the primary audio output device is set to use the Realtek chipset. I've seen situations where, for no reason at all, the device gets changed to (None) or something similar, and changing the device properly fixes it.
...Please tell me you're joking?
If you're serious, I'd be taking apart the system, and spraying EVERYTHING off with compressed air. Buy a couple of cans, and spray out every nook, crannie, crevass and fin of your system, so no eggs are left over. Then, you will need to start considering some type of household pest removal solution.
...There aren't any trolls in the system, are there? Perhaps you were using some fumigant to remove bugs elsewhere, and inhaled too much of it? :p
look on other thread with same name
No need to. I merged the two together. In the future, if you're still working on one issue, keep the same thread going that you've been working in. It makes things easier to follow, and it will give future searchers something to follow in case they ever have the same problem.
or anything similar, that is your heatsink
Just curious... what type of chip is that? Is it recent? Last time I saw a passive heatsink was on an old Pentium chip that I had, and it didn't look like that...
never mind guys i fixed the problem by reformating. i found out i have a virus on the computer so i just reformated. but i still need help with the sound. see my eariest thread, in has more info
Well... there you go.
More than likely, you didn't have a virus, but some nasty spyware. There are such beasts that will do things to disable spyware/AV programs, just like viruses do. It's scary to see how the lines between the two are getting blurred.
Glad to hear you're up and running again, though! :D
insiccor i was told to ask you about flash and i was wondering how i get a flash movie on here?
Probably can't. The size of the avatar is limited to 55kB, too small for a flash movie. Besides, I'll bet the forum software only allows .GIF files or .PNG's.
Heck, just ask for the email address, even. Use "Joe Blow" as the name-- that can be changed by the person registering.
I never meant to sneak it on the computer... do it together!!!
Well, the way I look at it is this... More than likely, the significant other would be offended that you'd ever suggest this. The way it turns out sounding is like,
"Yes dear, I say I trust you, but I want to install this program because though I say I trust you, I don't trust you enough to not do this. "
...And that's never the way you'd want to go. Bottom line in my book-- don't try any sneaky stuff to catch him in the act. It's going to end up hurting more than neccesary, and the situations just going to become more inflamed. If you really don't want him doing this, the only way to have any change is for him to come to the intimate realisation that his actions are going to cause you to leave. If he is not ultimately aware of that, he'll have no reason to change his actions.
The trick is to find where the temporary file is being written to. It's possible that there's some other directory where they're at. All you'll need to do is find that directory, and change the permissions there.
As to what directory that is, I'd have no idea. I haven't used Pagemaker since Aldus owned it, and that was on a Mac.
yeah worked great....
Is there a similar doodad for the Mac platform???
...Only thing I've ever found for the Mac was an older Norton Utility program, and a REALLY older one from pre OS 6 days.
What did you do, just go on a deleting spree? ;)
That's probably something you're going to have to take up with Hotmail themselves. Have you tried perhaps making another hotmail account, and seeing what happens?
We dont do your hw for you here. what dont you understand about it? be more specific of your problem.
Yes. Please ask specific questions that you're having with YOUR code. We're not here to help you essentially cheat.
then why do you take java ?? leave it !! ... I also have a lot of study but still I spare time for my java practice. and I am only two months old in java :D
nanosani's right. If you're posting your homework here, you're not learning by doing, which is the most effective way of applying what you're supposed to be taught. In the future, please do not post your questions here for us to do them for you; instead, ask questions, and post code of your own for us to help you with. That way, you can't use us a crutch to hobble by on, but as a stepping stone to get higher up the mountain with.
Hi,
We don't do your homework for you, here at TechTalkForums. If you have a specific question about such a program, please ask. For now, I'm closing this thread. If you have a question, please repost the question, and be sure to have a title relevant to your question. "emergency!!!" tells us nothing about what your question is.
...Not only that, but it's a little rude to demand that we, a free help site, give priority to you, when there are posters here before you with questions, and they're probably not trying to have us do their homework for them.
arent there programs that will keep track of all web sites someone goes to.... it would not be a filter but more of a "camera" big brother is watching????
would not that do the trick????
sorry I dont know of any programs, Ive just heard of them from friends that have teens...
i would not mind a gmail invite....
There are keyloggers, but then again, if you're using one of these spy-type programs, you're invading his privacy. That, in my book is just as bad as him looking at porn on the sly.
I think that antioed's comments are very poignant-- I'd give you some rep points if hadn't done it recently already!
Really, just don't fool with it at all.
etc contains the hosts file, where you can add IP address to hostname mappings, so you can customize things there. LMHOSTS does the same thing, but for the Network Neighborhood.
Basically, there's nothing to mess with there. Sometimes, people map known spamhosts or ad servers domain names to 127.0.0.1, to block those ads. But, that's about it, and there's really no point to doing that, even, as there are way to many ad servers to fool with blocking.
which etc folder did he say? The only one I can think of is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc , but you don't want to delete everything in there...
