More than likely, it's going to be blank. That's my guess if you've never installed Windows.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What kind of computer is this? What kind of cable modem? How is it connected?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are the LEDs installed correctly? Try swapping them around on their pin headers. You might have just put them on backwards...

i have figured it out for myself... believe it or not it was a screw on the top of the drive that was catching on the lip inside the bay. i just took the drive back and exchanged it for another 1 that does fit.:D

Great! But... next time, try not to hijack someone else's thread with your unrelated question. :)

Look at the "Using the System Configuration Tool Method" under Windows 98/ME. That should be the fix you're looking for. Just uncheck the box it's telling you to check, if it's there.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What have you tried so far to resolve this?

It could be anything, at this point-- a bad video card, or it could even be a bad processor, power supply, or motherboard.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Have you tried changing the BIOS settings to "Load Failsafe Defaults"? See how that works out for you before going for a reinstall. Either that, or remove the CMOS jumper on the motherboard and restore the BIOS defaults that way.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

keep in mind that your computer might not work that well with Windows 98... That computer was "Designed for Windows XP"-- usually that translates to "Too lazy to make drivers for the other OSes"

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

if you can't find your Windows CD, you're probably going to be out of luck, unfortunately. I wouldn't trust downloading that program from anywhere on the web, considering that it's such a critical system file...

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What are the specs on this "older computer"? Do we even know if it meets the minimum requirements for XP?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

No. If you're too lazy to do it then you deserve a failing grade.

Exactly. Please show your work, and we'll help you troubleshoot your code.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Please post your own work. This is a homework assignment-- it's obvious from the way it's phrased.

I'm thinking that a 33MB file isn't going to yield very good results coming down over a phone line. Do you ever lose connection on your modem?

I don't ever recall having that problem with my vfat partitions when running Red Hat 9. Try changing the line:

/dev/hda<number> /mnt/win_c <vfat or msdos> defaults 0 2

to

/dev/hda<number> /mnt/win_c <vfat or msdos> defaults 0 0

I'm betting that the 2 is causing fsck to run on those partitions, thus accounting for that bootup time. You really don't ever want Linux fscking your FAT32 partitions, especially not as old a version as Red Hat 9.

I'm not really familiar with Mandrake LE Micro, but there are plenty of free distributions out there, like Fedora, for instance, that include desktop environments, media players, and a C compiler. What made you pick Mandrake 2005 LE Micro, anyways? Just curious.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Sorry-- you need the CD. that's going to be the only way to get all of the needed registry keys installed for the game.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are you talking about the WAN side of the router? How fast is your DSL connection?

10Mbps is fine, so long as it's not slower than your WAN download speed, so as not to create a bottleneck. I've got a 4Mbps connection (Comcast cable), and my 10Mb/s old NIC works just fine on it, no slowdowns.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Just curious... What process jumps up to 100% when it spikes like this?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Sounds like a video diagnostic. Flashing from red, green, blue, etc, is an onboard video diag that runs on Dell systems. Is there any beeping? Will it boot past that, eventually?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

It depends on the motherboard you're getting. One's a Socket A, and one's Socket 754. Those are different processor socket types.

Personally, I wouldn't fool with either of those-- if you're building a computer, I'd look for a motherboard/processor setup that uses Socket 939, as AMD is or will be dropping support for both Socket A and Socket 754.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You probably just need to replace the fan. Fans can be replaced with most any 80mm (or same size) fan available on the market. When picking fans, you can choose the amount of noise by the dB (decibel) level they produce.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are you wanting to span the video?

If so, I'm afraid that's not going to happen. Most video cards have a setting called "overlay", and it's only usable on one display at a time on most cards. There might be some cards that can do it, but they're likely to be expensive, professional-grade cards.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You need a DVI to VGA adapter. They're available at most computer stores; if you can't find one locally, try froogle, or newegg.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Have you tried re-flashing your DVD burner, perhaps in Safe Mode? It sounds like you might not have correctly installed the update.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Does it work on another system? You could very well be looking at a physical problem with the camera, requiring replacement.

What other programs does this happen in during installation?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I'm not so sure you can do that. He's basically sending an HTML file to you that says to play music in the background. If you want the possibility of hearing the sound, you'd have to provide a URL for the sound, rather than an attached file. Using a URL would ensure that you had a consistent place to tell your email client where to find the music you're looking for. I've never done this with Outlook Express, so this suggestion is all I could provide.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Hey! I have one of those in my system!

The only thing I can tell you about that controller is this: It didn't matter to me, but sometimes when adjusting the speed of one fan, it would cause the speed of the others to change ever so slightly. It seemed like when you lowered the speed of one fan, the current was redistributed to the other fans, speeding them up maybe 100-200 RPM. It's not much to worry about, I guess, but I just wanted to make you aware of it.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are you running some kind of CD burning software, like Direct CD, or DLA? If so, uninstall and reinstall it.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Sorry for being slow but is this a free number? Any thoughts on why it was doing this. Thanks L.

Just to add to this, yes, it's a toll-free number. When you tell it to activate over the phone, it asks you your country, and then it gives you the appropriate number.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Run your anti virus and your adware/ spybot. Dont always rely on them doing there job by themself. Run manually.
Try Running Defrag and doing a clean up. Some Problems are just hardware probs. I know because I bought a HP. Been for repair 3rd time in 18 months. Thank god for extended warranty, when one buys a LEMON. When my lemon goes for repair 5 months old they say fixed it. Comes back not working. Send it back, Prob fixed. Yes it was for the 12 months warranty then goes again. Now on extended warranty cant find problem reseated all working yours again. This comp had new on/off switch? this comp had another on off switch plus motherboard replaced. this comp had reseating. HOPE You DON"T HAVE A LEMON TOO.

No computer is EVER a lemon; remember that. You can have a statisically high number of bad parts, but each can easily be replaced.

This thread isn't in the right section for HiJackThis logs-- moving it to the appropriate forum.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You're only supposed to get an OEM OS with some kind of hardware purchase, thus justifying the lower price. But, to my knowledge, most OEM software discs work the same as retail.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Even if we could, my question would be WHY?

We've consistently got around 6 billion people on earth, with the amount of births and deaths we currently have. The number has been going up, thanks to longer life expectancy, and higher birth rates in certain countries. If people quit dying, where would we put all the people? I don't see our space colonization science advancing incredibly far in 25 years.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Just find where they're stored on the hard drive, and you'll be able to access them, just like any other kind of data.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Okay, I think I see now. It still sounds like an assignment, so I'm going to treat it as such:

Are the Annexe and the main building on the same subnet? If so, consider whether or not you'd need a router (hint: you wouldn't). What cables are you familiar with? The inside choice should be obvious, but you'll need something that's not susceptable to interferance and weather for the outside interconnect. How many hubs/switches would you need? If you've got a bunch of users, I'd recommend a switch, preferably one in each building.

...Are we connecting the VDUs? How do the VDUs connect? Serial? Can you use tranceivers?

Your question isn't complicated, but it is rather drawn out. It seems like a case study I did for a Cisco class a few years back. I'd concentrate on wiring the buildings first, then decide what method you'd use to maintain the interconnect between the buildings. Breaking down the problem will make things easier for you. My suggestions:

 • Determine which building will have the Internet source coming into it.
 • Determine which equipment (LAN gear, routers, switches, etc) are needed to wire that building.
 • If building A has the Internet source, consider how to connect the VDUs to the mainframe, then the mainframe to your LAN.
 • Determine how to wire up the Annexe.
 • Determine how to connect the Annexe to Building A.

Those steps should take care of things for you-- it should be your task to …

< acl ourlan src 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.50/255.255.255.0

This is just a thought, I know this thread is 2 months old. I didn't think you could specify a range like this-- I thought you could just do a netmask, like 10.0.0.1/255.255.255.0 ?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You can't just hit Cancel, or the <Escape> key? It's always worked for me. Either that, or boot into Safe Mode by holding the <ctrl> key at boot, and then you should be able to change the password.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

In your situation, I'd just back up the files you know you want to save to the network share, and leave it that. You're going to have trouble backing up the whole OS, unless you wanted to boot to DOS, get the appropriate NIC driver loaded, map the network share to a drive letter, and then use Ghost to dump an image of the entire 98 drive over.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

First off, don't download videos from iMesh. You're just asking for trouble. Secondly, you got the trouble you're asking for; run the spyware removal tools that I have linked in my sig.

Basically, the version of Windows Media Player you're running is old, and has a vulnerability that lets spyware and viruses come in through the rights acquisition process. Let this be a lesson: piracy is bad, and you need to change or update your media player.

Are you sure you don't have a stuck key on the keyboard? Like, Alt, Ctrl, or Windows, perhaps?

What is that error Symantec gives you? Blah blah blah tells us nothing.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What exactly are you wanting to do? I'm not sure what the exact question is, even after looking the question over 2-3 times. What are you wanting to connect? It looks like you've just given me a description of the schema, but no actual description of what you need to do...

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Sounds like you might have a bad drive on your hands...

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I've seen some really good ones on ebay, but the price is so low that there must be something wrong with them.

Exactly!

Usually, the models you find on eBay, low prices or not, have older batteries, scratches on the screen, etc. You're half way there with your current funding, perhaps even closer than that: I've seen Axim X3 Advanced (400mhz, 64MB RAM, no wireless), for as low as $165+tax, and there's an X30 Basic (312mhz, 32MB RAM, no wireless) right now for $214+tax. Both of those are SUPER capable, and you can update the device with an SDIO wireless card for about $100 later down the road.

I had and LOVED my X3 Advanced, right up until I dropped a brake drum on it. :(

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Too expensive? I dare you to find one cheaper with the same features and warranty.

I got my Axim X30 Advanced Wireless (624Mhz, 64MB of RAM, Wireless/Bluetooth), for $280, on sale, 1 year Complete Care and 2nd-day shipping. You just have to sit on your hands until you spot a great deal.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are you sure it's a burn mark? LCDs don't have phosphor burn-in.

Is there any way you can take a picture of the screen and post it here?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are you sure ASP is really supposed to work under ME? I thought you were supposed to have IIS 6 with ASP server extensions added in.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

It's a trial version. It's supposed to be time limited, so you have a reason to buy it.

Closing the thread; any attempt at extending the trial period would violate their licensing, thus being piracy, whether you like it or not.
