Moving this post into Security, as it is the more appropriate forum.

Also, please check the link in my sig, which is the same as the link at the top of the Security forum. It contains everything neccesary to fix the bridge.dll error message.

Additionally, unchecking those files may not work in HJT. Try simply uninstalling the Winad Client from Add/Remove Programs to rid yourself of DuncanIdaho's catches there.

That #!/usr/bin/perl notation would tell a UNIX or Unix-like kernel where to find the command interpreter. On a windows system, the # sign would make the interpreter ignore that first line.

In order to get the command to run on a Windows system, you have to do one of two things: One, give the file a .pl extension. If the Perl interpreter is properly registered with Windows, the .pl extension will associate to that program. Or, run it from the command line. If your PATH environment variable. contains the path to the perl executable, you can do it from the command line by typing perl filename.pl

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Well, so much for those-- already gone!

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Nope, it will just ask you to re-register. I've done it before.

But, back to the question that dlh6213 asked: Is this a secondary hard drive (ie, one just to keep stuff on), or are you making it the system drive?

If it's just secondary, there's no need to reinstall Windows. You might have to re-activate it, maybe, but not reinstall. You do have to reactivate Windows XP if you change 3 "key" hardware components in your system (MS hasn't released which ones, though), and boot your machine. Windows XP thinks your machine isn't the same one it used to be, so it has to reactivate.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

It's kind of like this... Once you get in there, what are you going to do?

I had a freeshell account, but I let it lapse. I mean, I've got all of the Unix boxen I ever need, and I've got them set up for remote access. I've got NetBSD, FreeBSD, Linux, SCO Unixware, Solaris, I can take my pick.

Personally, my opinion is that unless you've got a better reason, just set yourself up a Linux box or something if you want to learn Unix like this. The most you'd ever learn from freeshell is how to use, but not administer Unix.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Try sticking in your Windows installation disc and then type

sfc /scannow

It might be able to get systray back for you.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Well, using LSD and computing can cause some wacky experiences. Perhaps you're using an LCD? ;) (just had to, sorry)

What type of video card do you have? More than likely, there's a rotation option for it. Try right-clicking on your desktop background, and then clicking on Properties. Once there, click on the Settings tab. There should be an Advanced... button. Once in there, try to find a tab that looks appropriate, and play with the settings. On certain ATI and NVIDIA cards, there exists a tab just for Rotation.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Like Mastadex asked, did you recently change your fonts/appearance in your desktop settings?

This happened to my wife's system once when she was tweaking her settings. Certain font sets don't have apostrophes ('), so instead of displaying an apostrophe, you'd come up with a .

I would almost be willing to bet that it's a virus or spyware. Those types of programs do all that they can to keep you from disabling them.

Have yoy checked for spyware or a virus lately? Check out this thread from our Security forum. Any time that I have screwy software issues like these, the first thing I do is check for spyware or a virus.

Alternatively, try a Google search using the terms disable Task Manager there may have been some type of Group Policy or Registry setting that can be tweaked.

I have a dell dimension 8300 desktop and i recently had to reinstall everything and now i cannot install the network adapter for the intel pro/100 VE adapter. The driver doesnt register with my computer. I have to setup an ethernet connection to my dsl modem so i can setup my linksys router. The ethernet light blinks on my modem and ready and power are on but the modem setup doesnt recognize the ethernet connection. Right now i am stuck using crappy usb.

How can i tell what motherboard i am using so that i can update the entire driver for that as well.

You can see my hijack this log here

If you're updating drivers for a Dell, the best place to go is straight from them:
http://support.dell.com

Personally, I'd be troubleshooting that onboard NIC. You might not have an issue with an Ethernet driver, it could be something like NEWDOTNET screwing with your TCP/IP stack.

Try Cmd Option P R. That should Zap the PRAM on your system, and set it back to defaults.

The problem is that for some reason, the system isn't finding your OS 9 system folder.

As a matter of fact, if I recall correctly, the directory rawrite is actually contained in is called dosutils, and it might even contain information about using rawrite.

Also, one thing to consider, though, is that the DOS version of rawrite doesn't work in NT-based systems like XP and 2000-- the reason is twofold: 1. The "Command Prompt" is not really DOS, and 2. "command.com" is in an NT-based system, but it does not have direct access to the floppy device. For those situations, I think there's a program called rawritent, or something.

Also, if you're browsing through our Security forum, some HJT logs are detected as containing malicious scripts sometimes, as the text will have URLs embedded in them.

If McAfee will allow you to proceed, then it's cool, and the messages can be disregarded if you've performed Catweazle's suggestions.

I'm all a about the Japanese import scene. :) ... considering buying an Evo8 or RSX-S

The Evo8==Lancer, right? I've always been a fan of the Lancer Evolution line from Mitsubishi, and I think it's great they're finally over here. I never was too keen on the RSX-- I really liked Integras, but I guess they were becoming a little aged. I think they're nice from a performance standpoint, but I don't like their styling. They look to me like they were made to be turned into those "MAD TUNERZ DOODZ" cars that you see in toy stores; you know, the ones that look real silly, ie, it looks like they have 40 inch wheels on them, and that the toy car's body was stretched out to fit over the silly looking wheels.

If you have Windows XP you will have to wipe the hard drive and start over. If you have Windows 2000, please let us know and get instructions BEFORE you make any changes.

Do you really have to reinstall Windows for this?

I've never done it with XP, but with 98, I could do it, with some changes. I went from an Amptron POS to an ASUS board, and all I had to do was remove everything from System Devices under device manager-- pretty much everything else went okay.

This makes me wish I had another box to try this on... I've got a motherboard, but I don't have the RAM, CPU, or hard drive to give this a shot on. I'll be darned if I tear apart my main box, either!

VMWare is the way to go - lets you try almost anything before you commit. We use this a lot at work to try out network solutions before we commit them to the live domain - very very cool.

Most people don't realize this, but Microsoft even produces a program that does this: Virtual PC. It's got most of the features that VMware has, it's just that the locations of the options are different (of course!).

I do the same thing with VMware-- I have a 2003 server setup, and I do all of my domain testing with it, sandboxed from my regular domain.

What version of Outlook Express were you using?

You said that your other users could access Outlook, so it would indicate to me that you've got some type of settings problem. I'd poke around in C:\Documents and Settings\< your username> and find where Outlook's settings are kept, and delete them. That should clear up your issue. The downside is that you may end up having to reconfigure your e-mail settings, but you would have probably had to do that anyways if your settings are corrupt.

If reinstalling does not work, try to play the wav file with Windows Media Player. Just to see if your file even works.

Good suggestion, or even more basic, you can open it with Windows Sound Recorder. It uses WAV as its default filetype.

Yeah, you should be able to-- just be sure to set the jumpers correctly. The motherboard should recognize it.

Also, if you're talking about being able to boot Windows or whatever OS, you might even be able to do that, if the system can detect changes in the hardware.

Quick word of advice: Don't double/triple-post... you can just edit your single post and then add additional questions if needed.

But on the first question, no, not all motherboards have integrated sound cards. But, those that do can have them disabled and upgraded if needed.

Second question: It depends on your budget. I'm going for an ATI Radeon 9800 here soon. It's a 128MB card, and it can be found for around $200 at various retail channels.

...And yes. You can use your old CDROM and floppy drive on a new computer.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Kalinga,

The reason I deleted your other threads is because your question is obviously a homework question and you posted no code of your own for us to critique.

I'll leave this thread open on one condition: Post code that you've written, including the part that you're hung up on. Ask specifically what you're not getting, and someone will try to help. Even if the code's completely wrong, someone will try and point you in the right direction.

We're trying to take a tough stance on people just asking us to do their homework. We don't want the reputation that we'll do people's homework-- we're a help site, not a cheat site.

If NT AUTHORITY is shutting your system down, you can use the Stinger tool:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

What is the exact error message you're getting, by the way?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What type of motherboard do you have? Will your board even support PC3500? For most people, I'd only recommend running PC3500 if you're doing over clocking, or if you're running a newer P4 or something similar.

Your sound issue might be memory-related , but I'd look for driver updates for your chipset and sound card before exploring anything else. I'm thinking the same thing as Mike Feury-- aside from the sound, I'd be looking for some clue (blue screens, restarts, freezes, shutdowns) that your memory is bad.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Yes, you can run just fine without IPv6, if you're not running on an IPv6 enabled network. If things are running okay for you, more than likely (and most commonly) you're just running plain-old IPv4.

My favorite online vendor for components is NewEgg, might be worthwhile comparing with BestBuy.

Agreed. Newegg is almost always cheaper than any standard retail outfit. The money you save on parts from them could be put towards more memory, or a better graphics card.

...This is just a personal thing, but I've never really liked the Xaser cases. They're really nice IMO functionally, but they just look really ugly to me. I'm kind of partial to these two right now, I'm buying one of them for my wife:

The Antec Super Lanboy Aluminum:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-145&depa=1

The Antec Silver Aluminum Performance 1 Series:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-144&depa=1

My wife's really wanting the Performance 1 Series, so that's what she's probably going to get. In the very near future, I'm going to build a box with this:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-142&depa=1

It's a really nice looking desktop case, as I need a smaller PC that still uses an ATX board. But again, that's just my opinion-- feel free to pick whatever case you want.

edit: went ahead and merged your two threads together, since they were so much related

Awesome! These links are really going to help!

I never knew that you could use CWshredder to download spyware, too. I've managed to completely Fubar the ME installation I did with spyware (Spybot, Adaware, and Pest Patrol all crapped out), so I'm going to start over with XP Home, now. Now that I've got some other spyware specimens to try out, I can probably start investigating things one at a time, and try removing those pesky things that we all have so much trouble removing.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You should just be able to create the file, and SuSE should read it.

My experience has been that you only have sysctl.conf on your system if you needed to tune some kind of kernel setting at boot time.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

-The amount of PG usage I had when I initially bought the system was about 190mb. I have a few items running on startup (like Norton, msn, AVI, Wacom Tablet) but nothing that SHOULD be consuming up this much resource. How can I determine which files in my MSCONFIG are useless and that I can disable (As the shortcut names don’t offer much information for which file its running and if I need it or not)

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

The link above lists an enormous amount of items that you could find in MSCONFIG. For the rest, let Google be your guide...

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

It really depends. Personally, I compare programming more to logic than real math, per se.

I like to think about it in binary terms, yes or no, 1 or 0. Like, If x or y, then z, type of thing. So, in my opinion, math is very helpfiul, but more for the way you're taught to think in a procedural manner.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You should be in good shape, power-wise. I'm running 6 hard drives on an old P100 box with a 250w Power supply, and it keeps on chugging.

But, if your motherboard does not support more than 130GB, that might be an issue. I'd check for a BIOS flash or something, as older boards can usually be updated to support larger drives. Either that, or you can buy an expansion card that will work just fine.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I think I may have a couple of ideas for you.

Have you run any memory diagnostics on your system? It's possible that your system is puking on a bad memory chip or something. I suggest trying a Google search for Memtest86 for best results there.

Also, are you running NTFS? It tends to become less fragmented than FAT32, as they tend to delay writes as much as possible to eliminate fragmentation. Even the page file is affected by this, IIRC. Another thing to explore is why your pagefile usage is so high. I've got an Athlon 2500+ with 512MB of PC3200 memory, and my pagefile usage barely gets above 90MB. I'd look through some startup items using MSCONFIG or something to see what's taking up all of your memory, or causing you to swap so much.

And, finally, if you want to run a test on your drive, you can just use scandisk or the Windows built-in error checking, and it will work just fine. I know for a fact that the native Windows tools will run when you restart. And, finally, you could be looking at a bad hard drive...

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Does more than one person use this computer?

It's possible several things may have happened: The most prominent being spyware or viruses.

Other than that, I'd look into completely uninstalling and then reinstalling Office XP.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Really, if you go into Computer Science, you have to have very good Logic and Math skills.

Do you enjoy figuring out processes of things? If so, CompSci might be good for you. Personally, I LOVE just about every aspect of networking. So, I got a degree in Computer Networking Technologies.
