Have you tried disabling ZoneAlarm temporarily, and then tried the update? Just a thought, as I've seen ZoneAlarm do some really odd things before.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I thought I'd got it there for a moment.
In printers and faxes the Fax is listed and with a "ready" status. I opened fax properties on the Devices Tap and my dial up modem was disabled (dont send) which I fixed. However, expecting that all was Ok I tried to send a fax and the problem is still there. "Fatal Error" in the status col.
Thanks for your help anyway. I'll sleep on it for a day or two and when (or if) I fix it I'll drop you a note.
(Fatal Error means an IP/TCP fault, accoring to the help files)

Like I said, I'm kind of sketchy past this point. But, I can at least tell you this: TCP/IP has nothing to do with the issue. You only use TCP/IP when on the Internet, or some other kind of network-- it's never used for faxing.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Not only that, but your thread title has absolutely nothing to do with your problem. In the future, please choose more relevant titles for your questions.

It looks like somebody made a mistake at the shipper. From what I can glean, you've got an Athlon XP2500 with a Barton core, and not the XP1900 you paid for.

while searching for a amd 64 to buy I saw that the default fsb is 266mhz and that it only runs at 1ghz until it needs to run quicker (for games or programs). can someone eplains this to me? I thought when you buy a amd 64 you get a 1600Mhz FSB and a 2.2Ghz cpu

I couldn't exactly explain the FSB part myself, because I don't quite understand it either. Hopefully, someone else can elaborate on that for you.

But, the whole deal with the 1ghz part has to do with this "Cool and Quiet" mode that the chip and motherboard are supposed to support. When you're just browsing the web, or other "simple" stuff like that, you don't really need a full 2.2ghz for that. In the interests of keeping your system "Cool and Quiet", the chip downclocks it to a still usable speed, and it will speed back up only when you need it to. You've got a chip that's capable of 2.2ghz, but it will only do that when you need the extra processing power.

No big deal, though, because you'll probably never notice it.

MS is constantly updating XP so if you want the latest updates, then you are forced to get SP2...Granted the initial version wasn't so good, eventually it will even out. Without SP2, you won't be getting anymore updates, but thats your choice to make.

Actually, I just did a "Custom Update", and I updated my SP1a box up to the most recent updates, some were even released after SP2.

Microsoft is going to keep updating for SP1, but who knows for how long. There are tons of companies who have no interest whatsoever in upgrading to SP2, as they've often implemented solutions to deal with the insecurites inherent in Windows XP SP1a.

I'm almost regretful that I have to move this thread. But, since you don't have an actual question about Windows, I'm moving this to the Geek's lounge.

But, I'd have my thumb stuck sideways; neither up nor down. He's probably not evil, but I could do without some of his company's marketing tactics.

run your burner at a higher speed

You're thinking of a buffer underrun, I think. That's a completely different topic.

Yep, spyware and viruses can manifest themselves in .DLL files. Basically, it enables them to "infect" an applicaton by simply telling the application to reference the DLL's code.

You might want to read some of the sticky threads in our Security forum on what to do with those files, as the "Helping Yourself" thread may have some good tips.

I'm back to Win XP SP1 and I did install SP2, only to have to roll back to SP1 because with the firewall enabled, I can't do ANYTHING. I've made exceptions with programs I use frequently, like Firefox, Messenger, etc, yet I cannot access the Net whatsoever. If you can help out with this, I'll go reinstall SP2.

I can't really help out with SP2, but what I'm suggesting is that you might need to completely reinstall. I tried rolling back as well, but I still had the same problems afterwards. :(

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

This isn't a Java question. You must register with a service like DynDNS (http://www.dyndns.org/) if you have a dynamic IP (which most likely you have, static IP is usually the more expensive business option). You can find out more information about how to set this up at the dyndns website.

Your friend will only be able to access your computer if it is online.

Moderator: please move this thread to "Web Technologies" or "Web Hosting".

Actually, I need to close this one. I looked over it, and what little Java I know, I can tell, too that this isn't a programming question. Since he already asked this exact same question in Networking, and I answered it there, I'll just close this post.

I'm not a C++ programmer, but I'd imagine that calculatecharges is some function they made up in the book. I'd assume you'd write a function, called CalculateCharges, that would do all of your work.

Have you checked the CPU and heatsink fan? It might be overheating. If you just built it, the heatsink might not be seated properly.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Nope, it should be in Hardware, really.

But, this probably isn't a good system to overclock; I can't think of a retail system that would be a good one. If you really wanted a system to overclock, I'd pick up a new motherboard and processor, like one from Abit, Asus, or some other manufacturer.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

If you're talking about a local network, you can pick any arbitrary host name that you'd like. Same for IP addressing; usually people assign 192.168.0.xxx (where xxx is 1-254) for their IP addresses.

If you're on a public network, like the Internet, you're assigned an IP address and a hostname. You can go to http://whatismyip.com to find out your IP address, which if you're not behind a router, you can give to someone, and they should be able to access your application.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Who's your Internet Service provider? Most of the time, the IP address, subnet mask, etc, is provided automatically by the ISP. Normally, all you need to do is plug it in, and if you've got DSL, get to the router's configuration page (how to do that is dependant upon the router model), and enter in your user name and password.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Hrm... stumped me. I haven't used Fax in a good while. Maybe I can install it, and see what I can figure out. If I haven't replied back to this in a couple of days, then you've really stumped me...

Well, what happens if you look in your Printers and Faxes control panel, under the fax device that you just used? What do you see there?

I was actually very interested in purchasing a Hivemail license awhile ago. However, I've since decided that I'm going to wait for a mail system that is more integrated into the forums. In addition, I don't have the time right now to learn how to skin hivemail enough to mimic this style. I will definitely keep you in mind though! Thanks!!

I think at the very least I should close off attachments to guests. Right now guests have access to those. Whatcha think?

You'd have to be careful about this. I moderate and browse this forum primarily from work, during slow times in the day. Because this site is such a great technical resource, I managed to get the OK from IT to remove it from the blocked sites list for being a forum. But, if we had a webmail system here, this site would get blocked for sure by my workplace, and probably others.

But, I think the attachments part is a good idea. I mean, we have to give people some incentive to register.

sorry for keeping an old post resurrected, but I missed out on the first round of talk on this one!

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I'd say it depends.

Do you intend to generate revenue with your forum, or is this just a "let's get together and be happy" community-type forum? That would be my determining factor on it-- if you intended to make some money off of it, I'd say it's worth investing at least a little bit of money.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Wait just a second-- who's your ISP?

Keep in mind that with most broadband cable companies, you don't need to install a single thing on your system to get it to work. If you install and configure the network card, or if it's already configured right, you should just be able to plug it in and go.

ISPs are full of it when it comes to these "system requirements". I've had 30mhz machines on broadband (directly connected to the modem, too, mind you!), and had nary a problem before.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I've done what Mike Feury suggested -- to go through elimination -- and I've noticed something very strange, yet consistent. When I open P2P programs or something else that involves lots of downloading or uploading, the connection craps out. When I'm just surfing the web or logging into messenger programs, the connection doesn't crap out as much, if at all. My guess is the NIC crapping out on me.

I've tried replacement cables and tech support dropped by with a different modem; because of time issues they couldn't fudge around with the different modem as much as I did, and I also noticed this same occurence with the other modem.

Any other suggestions? Since this is a laptop, maybe I should go out and pick up a PCMCIA NIC.

Are you running Windows XP SP2? I had the same problem as this. The only thing I could do to solve it is back up my data, reformat, and reinstall back down to XP SP1a.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

To keep this from happening again, you should get a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).

Additionally, you might want to consider just getting a new Power Supply for your system. If you had a power outage, you might have messed up your Power Supply, thus causing damage to your new drive. I'd consider that, as a decent power supply isn't too expensive.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What are the specs on your computer (Processor, RAM, hard drive size, etc)? Let's check those out before you even think of installing Windows XP on your system.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Try doing it in Safe Mode. When you boot your computer, hit <F8> and then select "Safe Mode", and hit <Enter>. You should then be able to use MSCONFIG to do whatever you need to do.

Additionally, you might want to look into further Spyware solutions. Check the last link in my sig, and consider checking out some spyware removal tools like SpyBot or Ad Aware.

I slightly modified your post's topic to make it more polite. "Emergency! Additionally, your thread title has no relevance to your actual question. Creating a relevant thread title also helps you attract people who could help with your problem.

Just letting you know for future reference.

Also, it depends upon just what you believe a computer IS.

I don't see the inclusion of more and more functions into the OS as a negative - I see that factor as a positive. I shouldn't really need to juggle software programs on my system to perform the everyday tasks which are fast becoming a routine part of using a PC. Back in the day when Windows 3.1 became the first really usable consumer OS for PCs, the inclusion of Paint, Write, Calculator and the varios other little inclusions made sense and no-one complained about their inclusion. Expectations of PCs weren't as high then, and no-one saw reason to complain.

Expectations are higher nowadays, and the inclusion of what consumers can rightfully consider to be 'necessary functions' demands higher system overheads and more 'bloat' in the OS itself. And it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Is it wrong for me to expect that when I plug my digital camera into my PC, the thing asks me if I want to copy them to my system? Is it wrong that the PC can allow me to view those pictures as a 'slideshow'? Hell no! why I plugged the bloody camera into the thing in the first place!

Is it wrong that when I pop a music CD into the drive, a player will start up and play the blasted thing for me? Hell no! That's why I put the CD in the drive! Is it wrong that when I type …

One more question. How does the rep points work on this forum. I went over to a thread about them and it didn't explain anything really. How do you give/get them?

There's a little picture of a thumb sticking up and at thumb sticking down at the lower left hand corner of the post. That will allow you to give reputation to that poster, if you like them.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Why did this happen? Did you rebuild your kernel or something?

It looks like what happened is that /proc didn't mount, which screwed up a lot of stuff. What changes have you made to the system recently?

Make sure the supply is unplugged for an hour or more before you open it to discharge the capacitors.

Does it really need to be this long? I thought that's why motherboards had those little lights on them-- to tell when the power in the system has been discharged.

Usually, all I do is unplug the system, and then hold the power button in for about 10 seconds, and then crack things open. Have I just been lucky up to this point? I've never been zapped, or anything...

Hello,

Unless your computer is setup specially in a way I am not aware of, your files have been over-written. The file names would have to be different, otherwise the files write over themselves. The only way that I know how to do this is through tape backup software.

That, or something like Norton Utilities, but I'm still not sure what feature we're dealing with here...
