"by design". that was well understood from the beginning. "To Clone", which is my understanding of the intent, literally means "ALL FILES", not just some or most of them. And, as you yourself inferred, it won't happen because it can't, at least not from WinExpl. anyway.

There's a basic misunderstanding here.
Here's what he OP said:"...is there a program that is available for me to only move certain files over too the new hdd, rather than clone the lot or copy and paste into the hdd...?

Explorer is the program to use.

What Caperjack said.
Delete any existing partitions and reformat NTFS.
It's curious that a new drive would show a131 GB unpartitioned space, though.

Many computers have USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports. The high speed ports are often on the front panel.
You can look in device manager under USB for an "Enhanced" (USB 2.0) controller.
USB 2.0 add-in cards are available.
Send computer specs for more info.

OK, I tried going back to using my old graphics card with my newer power supply. It worked before with the old 300 watt supply, so should work with the 350 one and should let me know if the problem is my underpowered new card.
Still have the same problem of not starting on first attempt. Perfect on second. Doesn't look like a power supply problem, although I'm still going to return the 350 for a 500 when I get a chance.
Anything else I could try before I give up?

Actually, that's a typical PS problem.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Perhaps you haven't been paying attention to this thread. The OP wants to copy his data files, not his OS files.
You can't move file that's in use, and that hasn't been under discussion here. If you think that's a"glitch", it's not. It's by design.

I really hate that program. It's very slow and it's much easier to copy docs and import settings, but...

You could try reading the documentation that came with your computer (Radical, I know).
Or: Right click My Computer/Manage/Disk Management.
Look at the C drive and see how it's partitioned.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

All I can say is that this has never been a problem for me, and I've copied millions of files.
I can see problems trying to do too many transfers at once on a slow machine with limited memory, but Explorer has always been reliable.
Of course, it never gets "time remaining" right, and it's stupid about "Repeat my answer" sometimes, but it's dependable, and that's what counts.

That's your third post about this software, so I suspect that there's a profit motive involved here. Care to enlighten us about your real agenda?
This software is unnecessary, unproven and expensive. No sale.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I tend to agree. The symptom is the same, so the PS is still my favorite suspect.

visit www.pcmigrationkit.com

There's a great deal on 3 products that will get the job done for you. Plus the products will help keep Visat and/or XP running smooth.

I'd hesitate to spend $80.00 for software that is only used once and is completely
unnecessary. A clean install sounds much better to me.

Yes. Or search the forum.
I've installed Ubuntu on several desktops, but no laptops yet.
I know wireless has been a problem, but they're overcoming that.

Go with your gut, then, but IBM has an excellent reputation.
It would be wise, of course, to check that Ubuntu has drivers fro your selection.

It seems that you used the wrong format-to restore an active drive or partition you need the Nero Image tool.
My best guess is that you can use this backup by reinstalling Windows, then Nero, and use the restore feature.
The Nero help files are here:

The file association has changed.
Right-click the file, select "Open With", choose program.
Check the "Always use..." box.

I don't know, but:
I looked at my icons and saw the same bar, which I had never seen before. This printer had been deleted some time before, but had never disappeared. I noticed it had docs pending, so I deleted them and the icon disappeared. So-any docs pending for this printer?

These both good machines, so I'd say get the ones that's been better maintained, or has the best return policy.
It might help to know more-HD size, installed memory and programs,OS.

In the standard screen, maximize the window.
Open IE/Tools and clear the temp files.
Re-set the home page and see if that helps.
I think this is an IE problem, not a Google setting.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Yes, Win Explorer can do the file xfer but there are too many glitchs that can occur that will cause the process to stall and when they do, it usually quits.

I've never heard anyone say such a thing. Windows explorer is extremely reliable and the "glitches" you describe don't exist..
Windows explorer has been around a long time, and I wonder if you aren't mistaking it for something else.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Start with the basics:
Defrag
Chkdsk
Check remaining disk space
What are the swap file settings?
Does this happen in Safe mode?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I do this with Windows Explorer.
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, since this is rather basic-open two explorer windows (One for the old drive, one for the new. Drag and drop.
More details if this doesn't help.

You can't really delete IE, as it's part of the operating system. When you have time to experiment, open IE/Tools/Connections and make sure the entries are correct.
While you're there, click ion the "Advanced" tab and reset to defaults..
Some web sites won't work properly in FF, so be sure to get the " IE View" plug in.:

Open the Desktop Tab/Customize/Web
Uncheck the "Lock" box.

It's not impossible you need a new board, but it's just too much of a coincidence that this happened the way it did.
I'll bet you get it running again.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I've never liked those transfer programs because they're slow and confusing.
I bet you'll find those files in some new identity in Docs and Settings that you didn't mean to create. Look there for all (most) of your files.
It's much easier and faster to import the mail and just copy the files.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You're connected to the router, but not the internet.
To check this:
Start/Run/cmd
ping www.yahoo.com
If you get a reply, you're connected. If not (Times Out) no connection.
There's not much left but power cycling the modem and router and checking for a firmware update for the router.
You could try Firefox, just in case there's something weird about IE.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Remove the entry from the startup folder.
You are in serious need of more memory.
Most people think 512 MB is the minimum for XP, and RAM is cheap nowadays.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Remove the battery and hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds.
Replace the battery and try again.
If that fails, try booting from the CD and use the repair option.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Your CD ROM is almost certainly causing this as evidenced by the event viewer errors. I would remove it at least temporarily and plan on replacing it.
The Sony site is easy to navigate and has a link to using the recovery partition.

A few hours later-
It occurred to me that you may not have set up this wireless connection.
You can use the Wizard in Network settings, or just right-click the wireless icon in the system tray/View Available.
Select your connection and click "Connect".

You have to expand the category (Click the plus sign) to see the devices.

Open the case and see if the CPU fan is coming on. This sounds like an overheating or power supply problem.
Blow out the dust bunnies while you're in there. Check the PS fan blades for resistance-they should turn very easily.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You have to tell every symptom-you get a quick flash and...?
If I were you I'd buy a power supply.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Open it again and check every connection. Reseat all the cards and look for anything loose.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Do you have a firewall enabled? If so, turn it off for now.
Check at the Belkin site for a firmware update.
The ASUS site is down at the moment, so I'll have to check them later. If you get a chance, check for a driver update for your wireless card.
Your IP configuration seems to be correct.
You might want to uninstall the wireless card in Control Panel/System and reboot. This sometimes helps.
And please: There is no such device as a "Rowder". It's a "router."
I'll check back with you later.

i have a computer that when u turn it on u can hear it booting up and then it stops the fan stops and it doesnt go any further....nothing comes up it doesnt get anywhere... u cant turn it off u have to unplug it from the back...and even after u unplug the POWER SOURCE the lil blue light at the button is still blinking...any suggestions?

Suggestion #1. Don't hijack threads. This was started by Lakersrulz, who seems to have disappeared, so now it's getting confusing as to who has what problems. In the future, start your own thread for clarity.
Suggestions #2. Try a repair install:

This time, delete all partitions, create and format a new NTFS partition, then install.

There's a fix for zedo here:

Google the others as they come up.
You might do as well to reinstall Windows, as these things can be hellish to remove.
When I reinstall, the very first thing I do is install AVG Free and Windows Defender as well as all windows update before proceeding.
Some say you have only 10 seconds on the 'net without protection before being infected.

Try it in Safe Mode with networking and see if it slows down.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Open Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager
Look under audio devices, right click and uninstall.
Look for yellow marks on other devices while you''re there.
Devices will be reinstalled on reboot and should work, with a little luck.

Hi, I have had advice on another forum: http://www.daniweb.com/forums/post512196-3.html that I could transfer my data from my dead XP Pro to a new PC using a powered ATA/IDE to USB 2 connector from my XP system's hard drive to the new machine.

The problem is that the new machine is running Vista Home OS. And that does not have Outlook or Outlook Express it has Windows Mail. I have set up a number of user accounts and would like to be able to provide the existing users with their data files from the XP machine.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this. Apart from Office 2003 data files which could be simply copied the main problem would seem to be the email PSD files

Just find the appropriate .wab (OE) files or the .pst Outlook) files and use the Windows mail import function.
