Portable Laptop Travel Speaker - value for money.!

Hi friends and tech experts

Its after a very very long time that I am posting a query. It has been truly quite a while and i have been caught up with my job and work.

I need one suggestion / help / advice:

I have to travel a lot and am bachelor. My life is very lonely and everyday after work i when i return home the only way i can keep myself cheer up is by listening to music old songs / ghazals / music / sometimes watching movies etc etc.

However my laptop's inherent sound volume is not sufficient. I would really want to listen at a higher sound as its soothing and relaxing. But i cannot carry with me my desktop speakers as they are quite big.

I was just wondering do we have any portable laptop compatible good speakers.which i can carry and which if connected to laptop will also give good high volume.

I am presently in UK and can order online.

Plz suggest some good portable laptop compatible speaker which i can carry along and which has excellent high volume. Also i would like ideally not to have to connect to power source separately everytime (sometimes its ok)and would prefer something which can draw power from usb itself or battery source if required. Additional option to connect to main power source would be although good.

You have done a mistake, I guess your motherboard will also get damaged soon, and you will not get any waranty for your laptop.

can u plz explain whats the mistake and what should i do to avoid it...

It may be a better idea to go on the laptop manufacturers site and see if you can order a UK version of the adapter.

Using Indian Laptop in UK...adapter getting extremely heated...???

I am using 3212NWXMi Acer Laptop which i had purchased in India. The indian plugs are round shaped. But the sockets in UK require square pins. So i purchased one

adapter through which i can plug indian round pins into sockets of UK for powering my laptop.

PROBLEM: The laptop power adapter is becoming extremely hot within 20-30 minutes of connecting it to power source.

I fear that my laptop motherboard might burn due to high power.

I am not a technical guy and does not understand what is ampere watt volt...I am mentioning the following specifications:

FILE BACKUP AND TRANSFER SOFTWARE - BEST...!!!

Hi everyone...!!!

WHICH IS THE BEST SOFTWARE (PREFERABLY FREEWARE) CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR FILE BACK UP AND TRANSFER...??????? (NOT SYSTEM CLONING but only data/file backup and transfer)

Scenario:

I am having one Hard Disk of say 200 GB with three partitions 20 GB; 40GB; and 140 GB
Balance.

There is a huge amount of valuable data (only) of somehwhat say 70 GB on 3rd partition of 140 GB.

I want to move (transfer - not back up) this 70 GB of voluminous data from this 3rd
partition to another Hard disk of 160 GB where there is already data of 30 GB.

I dont want to do CUT - PASTE...(bcz long file names are not copied and if there is a
problem in copying at any stage the entire copying procedure stops in between and then its diffuclt to track in thousands of folders and files what has been copied and what not)

I cannot clone as in that case destination data of 30 GB will be lost...whereas my goal is
to add 70 GB of data from partition 3 of hard disk one to already existing 30 GB data of
hard disk 2...without destroying data in hard disk 2 (which would happen in cloning or
image recovery)

Request:

Can i request all OF U TO PLZ SUGGEST ME Some way / idea / software / trick/ mechanism …

Hard Disk - One Partition Unaccessible...!!!

Hi

I have attached three hard disks and have booted from one hard disk...but why one of
partition (partition J ) of another hard disk is not getting accessed from the hard disk
from which i have booted.

Normally i was able to access it in the past. Restarted but does not help. Also when I try
to access the same partition J by booting from its own hard disk; its accessible; this
means there is nothing wrong in partition J.

Any idea / suggestion as to how i can access partition J data while being booted from
another hard disk.

TravelMate 3212NWXMi - Urgent RAM Upgradation...!!!

Respected nerds, techs, geeks and dear fellow members,

After months and years of waiting and speculation; I (poor soul who managed to purchase laptop first time in life) purchased one laptop few months back - TravelMate 3212NWXMi -

Presently by default the laptop came with -

1. 60 GB Hard Disk
2. 256 MB DDR II

Now I am finding that both of the above is posing as a terrible constraint in my use of laptop.

The laptop is terribly slowly and I find it very diffcult to use in reading word documents; PDFs etc...

I want to upgrade RAM as Maximum as possible...

From my preliminary analysis; what appears to me is that there may be two slots and maximum each slot can take 1 GB each...(I may be wrong)...

Few Questions in context of RAM Upgradation:

1. Is it wise to go for 1 GB each slot so that laptop is having 2 GB RAM...????

I am an indian right now in usa on a short trip. I am here for just 4 more days.

I want to PURCHASE --------

THE BEST DIGITAL VOICE RECORDER - the objective is to be able to rcord all important conversations and discussions at meeting, seminar, chat with client, lectures at vaious places etc.

I tried a lot to find a good digital voice recorder in india Kolkata but was not able to find one inspite of having spent 4-5 days.

outlook 2003 and exchange 2003 - urgent issues - very urgent...???

In my office I am sure that Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is being used. (I really don't know why it is being used and heard for first time in life such a product from microsoft).

Also Microsoft office Outlook 2003 is being used.

Now my issues/problems:

1. In my office desktop, all emails that i get gets downloaded so later on when i want to use a particular email from my home using webaccess the email is not avaialble.

what i want:

a. how can i do the settings so that i can have a copy of all messages be left over server of comapny for web access later on...???

b. can i do any settings so that all emails which ome in my official email above gets forwarded to my personal email gmail id as a bckup and reference.

COMPUTER - COLD COUGH SNEEZING....!!!!

Dear friends

A silly problem as it may appear to u people but really really a big problem for me.

The fact is that I have to sit at my home computer in my room whole day (yes i am going unemployed these days) and work on computer. So the machine is almost on for 24 hours.

Now problem is that in case i put off the ceiling fan in my room fan, the CPU gets very heated and a strange noise starts coming from it and the intensity and pitch of noise goes on increasing with passage of time. Within half an hour, the CPU really really becomes very heated and produces a large noise. There have been instances where the computer has shutdown automatically and when i try to restart the machine the screen says "computer
shutdown to prevent damage from thermal event".

SO i have to put on the ceiling fan "on" even in this cold weather. As a result I am getting cough cold and sneezing continuously as i already have sinusitis. This is affecting my work that i do infront of my computer.

BUT i cannot also afford to put off ceiling fan as CPU gets heated very fast.

PLZ PLZ PLZ suggest me some realistic easy (and if possible inexpensive) way of cooling my cpu of computer without putting on ceiling fan. I would ideally want to have my computer ON …

windows service pack 2 installation - unique problem

please help me........!!!!

Respected techs and dear forum members,

I have installed a fresh copy of windows xp (without having sp 2 onto it) on my hard disk.

After that i tried to update windows through tools>windows update.

It took so so many hours to download service pack2.

Now after that i was prompted by the system to click so that update (service pack 2) be installed. I did click and it started installing.

The Installtion process of service pack 2 was going smoothly until the last screen (i believe it was last screen) displayed where it was written...

"Finishing Installation"

BUT the blue colour got stuck in the bar below the above message at almost in between.

Thereafter i patiently waited for hours at a strecth in anticipation that it will be completed but it got stuck.

So i was left with no choice but to restart the machine.

After that the system prompted a message saying that service pack 2 installation was not successful and hence to remove it from add/remove programs.

After uninstalling the incomplete service pack 2 i again repeated the whole process.

Again same story.

Plz help me....

Well I am having a desktop presently with 2 GB of RAM. (I am very soon upgrading to 4 GB of RAM) Also I have 400 GB hard disk with certain heavy applications like SAP, Oracle, CRM, XI, Netweaver etc on it. Also I use 915 Intel cheapset.

Now I am habituated to this high end machine.

However the laptop has just 40 Gb of hard disk and 256 MB of Ram.

WHAT I AM PLANNING:

I want to just carry in my suitcase the cabinet (consisting of 915 Intel Motherboard + 4 GB RAM + 400 GB HDD).

AND i want to use my laptop's monitor, keyboard and mouse (usb attached)....along with the above cabinet

MY QUESTION:

CAN I REPLACE DESKTOP'S MONITOR/KEYBOARD WITH LAPTOP....?????????

ULTIMATE HARD DISK SETTINGS - brain racking question

Here goes the situation:

I have one INTEL 865 GBF motherboard

As far as I have understood (and correct me if i am wrong) i can attach six devices (be it Hard disk or optical drive).

Two sata hard disks can be attached to two sata interfaces and
Two pata hard disks cab be attached to EACH ide interfaces

Thus all in all 6 hard disks (or say 5 hard disks and one CD rom can be attached) on my intel 865 GBF motherboard.

Now furthermore i also understand that for SATA hard disks there is no problem of master / slave.

But for each pata HDD attached to either IDE channel, we can have

primary master
primary slave
secondary master
secondary slave

NOW MY QUESTION IS THAT :

Say I am having two SATA hard disks

SATA Hard Disk One with windows advanced server 2000 OS (80GB)
SATA Hard Disk Two with windows XP professional (160GB)

ALso I am having three PATA hard disks

I am a non technical person and am only good at using computers for my finance jobs and NOT configuring it.

From last three days I have been reading and reading and reading about SATA PATA Primary Secondary master slave and so on...but now i think i really need help as my head is spinning...

WHAT I HAVE:

Disk One is PATA of 80 GB having windows 2000 advanced server loaded by my company (beyond my abiility to load it) for me with me being as administrator. However there is no other computer connected to it.

Disk two is SATA of 80 GB having two partitions C and D both partitions having windows xp professional
operating system and 40 Gb each.

Now on Disk Two i Used to work in Partition C with data saved on D. But one fine day without my knowledge the C OS crashed and so i started working on D. It has all the data.

Lots of valuable data is there in SATA hard disk two above in partition D.

networking - How to share printer - please help...!!!

Please help me with following:

There are two computers A and B (say).(They are in two adjacent rooms)

A has windows advanced server 2000 OS.
B has windows XP professional OS.

HP laserjet 3015 is connected to computer B.

Now I want to take printouts on Hp laser jet printer from Computer A also at times.

I understand that this requires networking.

However, I am NOT a very computer savvy person and therefore need help.

I have purchased CAT 5 cross over cable and Compex 8 port switch.

Also computer A has two NICs - one onboard Intel 865 and another extra Dlink.

Also computer B has one NIC.

Now please say me someone step by step how do i network the two computers so that I can:

1. share files
2. share printer
3. share internet connection

Please explain me step by step assuming that I have to do networking of my own and I have never done it before but ready to do it now.

I am thinking of buying HP PSC 1315 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier.

Do u people think that my choice above considering following factors is correct or does there exist a better alternative...??

1. I need a good scanner (to scan books/pages/large documents) (scanning is most important feature i am looking for)

2. I need a printer for taking colour pages for my project work for few days only.

3. I want it to be of decent size so that i can carry it. (for example, laser printers are too tough to carry from one place to another due to bulky size)

4. Fax is NOT necessary as such.

5. Budget is maximum rs 4000 +/- rs 1000/1500

Because our professor delivers lecture at a very very rapid pace and although it is great listening him and understanding his concepts...its so so fast that its impossible to write or make note of anything...

This creates problem because although I am able to understand everything while he teaches BUT later on I forget everything as I am unable to make any notes.

I gave a thought to my problem very deeply and discussed with some people and the only solution that appears is TO RECORD THE ENTIRE LECTURE DAILY....so that I can make notes from it later on at my ease...

After doing a very thorough and deep analysis on net and gathering as much information as was possible for me...I concluded that I am having the following options:

A. To record the lectures using Apple iPod along with either griffin italk or belkin voice recorder.

BOOTING windows xp FROM USB PEN drive...!!!

Q1. Can we boot our desktop or laptop computer from USB Pen drive of say 512 MB or 1 GB...?????

Q2. If yes can we use installed programs and applications on hard disk of our desktop or laptop after booting from pen drive...????? Also how do we prepare pen drive so that its bootable...????

Q3. In case of laptop is it possible that through EXTERNAL hard disk (which has SAY windows xp installed meaning thereby that such external hard disk is bootable) connected to laptop via USB port be used to boot laptop instead of laptop's internal hard disk being used for booting...???????

SWITCHING between TWO separate physical HDD drives…

Well…

Situation:

TWO separate HDD in one CPU:

(Say):

a. One HDD of 80 GB used for general work and internet etc…(having its own windows xp prof OS)

b. Second HDD of 160 GB containing utmost critical and sensitive applications and data…(having its own windows advanced server 2000 OS along with oracle etc)

PRESENT:

BOTH HDD connected to motherboard always and at the time of starting the computer…I choose the desirable HDD on which I want to work by going into BIOS Settings…

PROBLEM:

It has happened that I logged into HDD one of 80 GB and virus got transferred from 80GB HDD (since it is the one which is connected to internet) to 160 GB HDD (which contains data and applications as critical as my life) and corrupted some important data and applications in 160 GB HDD…

This is true despite the fact that I had latest Norton Antivirus updated daily installed on 80 GB HDD along with spyware blaster and almost daily run spybot and adaware…

Furthermore the 160 GB HDD had MCAFEE 2005 full security solutions installed…

SOLUTION I INITIALLY THOUGHT:

Connect the data cable and power chord to the HDD which I intend to use at any one point in time AND DISCONNECT the other HDD’s data cable and power chord…(but both HDD remaining fit in CPU)…

Limited Virtual Memory - Pagefile Increase...???

Dear friends,

I am confronted with a typical problem and am almost at my wits end.

I have two HDD:

Disk One 80 GB two partitions C and D on windows xp
Disk two 160 GB on three partitions E F and G on windows advanced server 2000

I have no problems as regards the first HDD in which I can work easily.

BUT when i boot from second HDD; it says while almost about to start that-

There is Limited Virtual Memory and asks to increase pagefile.sys.

I had no idea about this but i did a lot of reading and increased pagefile in all drives and partitions.

Still when I boot from 160 GB running on windows advanced server 2000; it shows error message that increase your pagefile and as a result i am unable to use it.

I am attaching two screenshots which may help in understanding my problem and possibly solving the error.

Coming straight, here goes the problem:

Background:

Hardware: HDD SATA SEAGATE 160 GB
RAM: DDR RAM 1.5 GB Dual
Processor P4 3.2 Ghz

Operating System: Windows Advanced server 2000

Application: SAP (an ERP PACKAGE)

Database: Oracle 9i

Note: Same single desktop computer with configuration stated above is used as server as well as client. It is NOT on any network. No second computer is networked to it.

PROBLEM:

The SAP application along with oracle database occupies around 60 GB out of 160 GB but the HDD is partitioned as follows:

C: 60 GB having SAP installed of 30 GB
D: 60 GB having oracle installed of 25 GB
E: 40 GB having documents 5 GB

WHAT I WANT:

I want to make an IMAGE DRIVE (CLONE) of the above 160 HDD....??????????????????????? on to another new 160 GB HDD...?????????

QUESTIONS:

Q1. Which software should i use...ACronis True Image or Norton Ghost or any one (please name it) most suitable for above situation.....?????????

Q2. Also there are many versions of cloning software (like server version; enterprise version etc etc)...which version should i use to clone of the software used above...?????

Laptop substitute - indigeneous idea...!!!

I always wanted a laptop but still till date it seems there will never ever be a situation where i will purchase one with the configurations i want...(2 GB RAM; atleast 80 GB HDD; etc etc)...as budget for laptop that i desire will run in almost two thousand dollars...

Now I am thinking of an alternative and need to know what u people think about it...???

MY SITUATION:

I travel say to a different city and stay there for say 1-2 months...then again move to a different place and so on...this essentially means that I am mobile but staying at different locations for longer periods...

WHAT I AM THINKING:

I need basically a computer system when I am say in city A for 1 month and again in city B for say 2 months like this...its NOT that i need it while travelling in train/ air for that day...

SO what if i purchase say.....

A. a FLAT MONITOR (may be 15" or 17") along with

B. APC 500 VA UPS (which acts as laptop battery for me) and

C. The smalllest available cabinet (CPU Box) so that I can put 2 GB RAM; Intel Motherboard; P4 3.2 Ghz; CD/DVD writer; 1 or if possible 2 HDD and say antec smps...

I am thinking (correct me if i am wrong) that this way:

Cabinet (with everything inside) + Flat Monitor …

finally settling for BR 1000 which is upgradable as it has provision for extra batteries...as cost is a constraint for me for 2-3 months...

not going for BR 800 as it has no provision for extra external batteries...

OBJECTIVE:

Purchase of a Pen Drive of 1 GB in India

BUDGET:

Rs 4000-5000 (a bit flexible if getting value for money) equivalent to USD 80 to 100 $

REQUIREMENTS:

a. Company should be best in class (I have heard the name of kingston; transcend; zion etc but i want real best).

b. To give an example; it should be as like we go for APC for UPS; Antec for SMPS; Intel for processor; google for search; HP for printer...a real best company's pen drive.

c. It should minimum be of 1 GB size.

d. Maximum possible warranty period.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT:

Not sure but is it possible to get something like 2 GB or 5 GB pen drive within Rs. 5000-6000 ($100 to $120) range in India....????????

CRITICAL COMMENT:

why did i address the question to super duper techies and not to dear forum members in general...bcz i personally believe only a super ultimate crazy geek (who loves eats dreams technology) would be using pen drive that costly...

SNMP heating up - new unique problem...!!!

Hey wonderful people here,

A new problem....??????? and faced for first time....

PROBLEM:

Presently desktop having SNMP of 220 Volts (most probably) but the entire machine gets very heated too soon.

The engineer saw and said that change SNMP to 350 Volts.

My system configuration:

P4 3 Ghz
512 MB RAM
80 SATA HDD
CD/DVD combo
inkjet printer

MY QUESTION

I actually fail to undrstand so much technical issues like volt etc...so

CAN ANYONE PLEASE SAY WHETHER I REALLY NEED TO CHANGE SNMP FROM PRESENT 220 volts to enginner suggested 350 volts...????????

APC UPS Model Number undecided - Final decision awaited...!!!

Thanks everyone for putting forward their opinion about UPS to my previous post.

I have read all the posts over and over again and finally have decided that I will purchase a UPS from APC.

Now again...few more questions though...????

A LITTLE BACKGROUND THOUGH:

I intend to use UPS for the following desktop:

WHY I NEED UPS

I need Ups to ensure that when I am using SAP with oracle database...there is no unexpected power outage as it may corrupt SAP software...which is a headache to get installed again...

WHAT I WANT

I want a UPS which can support say 20 - 30 mins so that I can have sometime (normally it takes 10 - 15 mins) to stop server and client in SAP mode...and then exit and shut down the system normally...

I am confronted with a baffling problem and it appears that only a computer guru can solve it with his knowledge, expereience and skills.

Here goes the problem:

I have one SATA seagate HDD 160 GB having three partitions C; D and E.

Basically this HDD has ONLY SAP installed on it...an ERP package which uses Oracle database.

Out of 160 GB HDD space; only 60 GB is being used by SAP program.

I WANT TO CREATE DRIVE IMAGE OR AN EXACT COPY OF THE ABOVE IN ANOTHER HARD DISK of 80 GB.

I know that I can crearte drive image with 160 GB of another HDD.

BUT my q is that is there any way in which i can create an exact copy of SAP system which has occupied 60 GB out of 160 GB ON
ANOTHER HDD of 80 GB....?????????????????????????????

I know this is a very complicated question but then i would love to hear the opinion of the techies; geeks and nerds...

Operating Systems - choice - simultaneous or alternative

I always have used one HARD DISK with two partitions....running windows xp

Now i have also added one extra harddisk with again two partitions using windows server 2000...

Now problem is that currently what i do is depending on which one i want to use; i change BIOS settings at time of machine start by kepping press DEL so that it takes me to BIOS settings and there i choose one out of two hard
disks...by modifying boot priority settings...

I was wondering is it possible to have (say) a screen which gives me option to choose any one from BOTH hard disk instead of changing BIOS settings everytime i start my machine....

Any idea / suggestion/ solution/ guide would be more than appreciated....

I am currently having SAMSUNG combo drive (dont know what combo means) which is i believe

cd rom + cd writer + dvd reader (NOT dvd writer)

SO I am planning to purchase DVD writer....???

Q. Which is the best DVD writer cum reader available for home desktop users...???

Q. Is it worth it or should i stick with my CD writer only...???

Q. plz suggest considering one which is compatible with all DVDs...and future technologies...???

Again Cost is not really an issue (unless it is exorbitant) but i should get value for money....

UPS - which; how; what vs inverter

Respected knowledgeable members and dear friends...

I have been lately thinking of buying a UPS fro my pc as there are many times sudden power cut leading to improper shut down...and last few days its more frequent...

I have absolutely no idea as to which company's UPS in India (me from Kolkata) is best;

CAN anyone plz advice which company's UPS are best and how much time it gives once power cut is there....????????

ALSO will going for an invereter (instead of UPS) would be a good idea considering the fact that inverter would be able to also give some extra benefit of light; fan etc.. ?????????

I am having presently one hard disk drive seagate of 80 GB...

I am about to buy a hard disk tommorow....

In this contect can anyone plz clarify my following doubts...

A. I have heard that we can set up two HDD with RAID connection for striping and mirroring (I dont know what these means)...

((a)) Do i need to buy the second hard disk also of size 80 GB so that i can set up RAID connection with my previous hard disk of 80 GB...???

Or is it that i can purchase 200 GB (say) of HDD tommorow and with my previous 80 GB...I can still set up RAID Connection...????????

I mean is it mandatory that both HDDs be of same size for setting up RAID connection...????

() Also to set up RAID connection is it necessary that both hard disk should be from same company....?????

Or can i have say one seagate HDD set up with say another samsung HDD in RAID...?????

((c)) Can we have three hard disk drives and still set RAID connection....????

back up - a new strange novel experimentation

In the past i have always taken a backup of my valuable data and content on my pc by invariably writing on to a cd be it R or RE.

However, the problem that always arose subsequently was that I always find it very time consuming when ever i have to format my hard disk or reload the operating system (i use windows xp) for various reasons (say too much spyware or virus intrusion, deletion by mistake say of system files etc etc).

But I was in the past never able to take say back up of windows xp or for that matter any other program which was installed on my computer.

Now before i proceed further to come to my problem / question on which ur valuable advice / suggestion is sought...I want to confirm that I understand the installation concept of programs properly...
