Is this for all .exe's or a particular one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried the Hexidecimal password? you should be able to get this from your router.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you have chance to see the error message?

In Safe mode have you ever got the 'Blue Screen of death'?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Looking at it I would have to say that it doesn't look like you can wall mount it; There doesn't appear to be any place to attach a wall mount. I would suggest emailing them though, if they don't know, don't buy it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have a look at this http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us. If your laptop is new HP should fix it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Yes, turn on the laptop and press F2 or F10.

You should have a cable that will connect the monitor speakers with your PC. The cable is usually a light pale green. Connect the monitor by pluging one end into the monitor and the other into the PC; the socket should also be a light pale green at the back of the computer.

Both ends of this cable should be the same, and the ends should look the same as the one from the speakers.

Monitor <<- cable ->> PC

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is the cable for sound connected to the monitor?
Have you tried using any headphones or other speakers?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can't you configure the grub manually. I know OpenSuse lets you configure the GRUB. If you install this "belinux" you may be able to reconfigure the grub and reformat the partition if it goes wrong. But I think the GRUB should pick up the old boot paths.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I tell you what you could do. If you have an old computer you could take the parts from the laptop and power them from the PSU from the old computer(if you have one).

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Either power or perhaps the processor. Any Beeps?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Well If everything else is working it must be the motherboard.
Unless it's the processor but you can't really test that. - Look's like it's had its day.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Which version of Vista do you have?

Is windows Aero disabled? Does Windows Key+Tab switch windows?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay, I am guessing there's nothing wrong with the CD and HDD then (you could test this in another computer if you wanted).

On the memory thing, make sure it is compatable.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster
Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Remove the battery and see if it gets power.

I meant put everything back in except from the CD drive. - but this doesn't work.

Try putting everything in but the CD and Hard Drive.

Have you managed to get anything up yet. ie any POST messages?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay have you tried every thing together minus the DVD then?

It could be something to do with the power... Trying something that draws more power may help.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I would remove the components, then replace them one by one. If one works try another one at the same time etc...

If you can see the motherboard see if there's any burn or scorch marks.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Try it.

You see the problem is finding out what is wrong. It could be the motherboard, but then it could be any component that is connected to it.

So far we have ruled out the hard drive.

The only thing I can think of is removing all unnecessary components and testing each one until one fails, thing is they are reliant on each other.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

have you check the memory module(s) for obvious signs of damage. If you have more than one have you tried alternating them?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If the psu fan isn't coming on maybe that is broken.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Honestly I don't think it would help if you tried the cd.

So after these beeps it just turns off?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Exactly. Download a distro, say Ubuntu. burn it too disk using imgburn or other image burner and reboot your machine with it in the CD drive. Or there may be one include in a DVD from a computer mag if you get them.

Have you tried just removing the hard drive and turning it on? It should come up with a message like "insert boot media" or something like that. This would probably mean the rest of the components are working.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I actually meant detach the hard drive, try a live cd to see if all other components are working.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Maybe somethings wrong with the hard drive. Can you take it out and maybe use a linux live cd to see if the rest of the system is working.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you got the power lead connected?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I am assuming that you are using XP. XP can only be updated to direct 9.0c.

Have you tried something else that requires DX 9.0c. Another game for example.

Go to start >> run and enter dxdiag this should tell you the version installed.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Just how old is this laptop?

Is there no restore partition?

I don't think Microsoft would be too pleased if you used one OS on two machines. You should be able to install windows but if you have to register it or get updates then it could be a problem. But please answer the above before you do anything.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Excellent, that WinFF has converted the vids to something playable.

-nice one.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Thanks AVI files are now playing.
But the error message is still there in windows media player (Yet it plays fine?).

Problem is AVI's aren't playing properly in a digital photo frame. Video works but the audiio format is not supported even though it is supposed to play AVI's. I was hoping to convert it using moviemaker into something the digi-frame will play.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried entering safemode? (press F8 on boot up).
You could try repairing windows using an XP CD.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can anyone help me, I am trying to play AVI files from my camera and Windows Media Player is missing the codec for it. The code given is 0010-8000-00AA00389B71. I could do with a safe download/install.

- Thanks for any help.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you know if the machine came with a restore CD?

You may be able to fix XP using another CD but try to get one with SP 2 on it. Make sure that there are no external devices like memory sticks.

But I would advise you try any bootable cd first like linux live CD or a windows installation CD to make sure that PC is working.

You need to be sure all devices are working before you install.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried repairing it with an XP installation CD if you have one.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You are going to find out what hardware isn't working though. If you have a bootable CD/DVD on you put it in and see if it can boot from it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

That bleeping may mean theres a hardware fault. You can't install an OS if something is wrong, Have you tried turning it on again?

With the XP CD you should be able to repair windows without losing any files. You may have a restore partition as well, this usually displays as an option during boot-up, for example press F11 to boot to recovery partition

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You may have been affected by a virus or something. If you had the XP CD you may be able to use it to fix XP.

You may have to reinstall windows. Is this a new computer or an old one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Probably can't use that CD.

Have you tried pressing F8 as the computer boots up?

Have you installed anything or made any changes to your computer?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Its to do with DEP(Data Execution Protection). Have a look at this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963892.aspx.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Seems like its throwing up an error message and then turning off/restarting. Have you got the XP install CD.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can stop the Program compatibility assistant if you want to;

Go to the run command or (windows key+R) and type services.msc. Scroll down to Program Compatibility Assistant and double click on it and click Stop. Then change the startup to Disabled. Try the EXE again.

- This should stop the pop-up, if you want it back do the reverse.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you sure it is a .NET problem. You are not supposed to have previous versions of.NET if you have up to date versions. What version were you last using with XP?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Try installing a more recent .NET version avaliable here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en .

Then try it again, but make sure their are no previous .NET frameworks installed.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I meant right click on the .exe. For instance for you I would expect it would be the python executable.

This popup, have you just installed python?

You may have to install it as an administrator. Then you may be able to run the program with normal user rights.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried right clicking on in and untick run as administrator or maybe changing file permissions?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried allowing automatic updates?

Have you checked out that error code link?

But something must be wrong with the time settings. Look at that security certificate; Will not be valid until 6/19/2008 - which is a past date.

Is there no option in 'change date/time' to sync with internet time?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Does the IE7 close after this message?

You say:

A window comes up that says something about control panel but it goes quick

Is this a new window or the same one?

You could try using Microsoft update http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?returnurl=http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate&ln=en-us

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you have a firewall installed?

You could also try a different web browser to see if that is the same.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I would install vista on the SATA drive though, its supposed to be faster than PATA.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

No error messages?
Does it detect any hard drive(s), Ram etc...

Try pressing F2 to check in BIOS.
