I dont know about xubuntu, but most livecds include a software called "gparted" which can basically reverse what the installer did (you can use it to enlarge your xp pattition into the free space)

yeah its called dual booting but will be costly you will need to buy a full (not upgrade) copy of vista. If you do it as an upgrade from xp, and then reinstall xp, then microsoft will ban both keys.

Bigger hard drive might be a problem too. Your xp recovery CDs are probably setup so they will only install on that manufacturers hardware (to prevent piracy) so changing the disk might mean they wont install
