I hope she hadn't applied vinyl polish to the dash like I do. Keeps the dash shiny and new.

I have to agree with you jwenting. Most of the people who graduate with a degree in Computer Science have absolutely no idea about real world apps. They think that the degree is the only thing that matters, when its not. A lot of my batchmates who just graduated have no idea how to make apps which are memory efficient, cost efficient and not bloated. These people are now having a hard time finding a job. It's the same situation everywhere. What needs to be done is supplement theoretical education with hands-on experience. That's the only way you're going to get ahead in this increasingly competitive industry.

Try playing the game with the tower open and a fan blowing inside the computer. If this makes a difference, let us know and we'll go from there...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

is this a clean install or an upgrade?

Also, why not install XP?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

How much did the Boss Mob pay you to say that?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Not a problem, thats what were here for :D

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

youd need to uninstall the game and then reinstall it completely on the external drive...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

remember though: too much thermal paste is as bad as no thermal paste, and messier too.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

format the email using HTML and not plain text. I dont use thunderbird, so i cant help youwith specifics. I coul give you directions for outlook express if you so wish.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

No, it's not a windows thing I can tell you that (if it is, it's a service disabled on my XP Home box). I think it has to do with your video card drivers or software.

I agree it's not a windows feature. Such options are provided by the manufacturer of the display driver. Windows uses generic drivers to run the hardware.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I think it's more lkely a problem with the app you use to view the database. You could ask your Sys Admin to repair/reinstall the app.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

When in safe mode, uninstall your display drivers and then reboot normally. If windows loads up properly now, you need to obtain updated drivers for your display adapter.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I've seen spme Windows 98 drivers work on Windows 95. You could try your luck with the Windows 98 drivers.

The Matrix may be a great topic theoretically, but practically speaking, I think there are just way too many barriers for it to happen, at least in the near future. For one, Establishing a fast link that stays up 24/7/365 is an issue plaguing us today. Then, making sure the entire populace of earth is hooked up in such a virtual environment? I don't think even the fatest processors, parallel processing will not be able to cope with it. Ofcourse, Quantum Computing could solve these issues, I just think that we'll be able to send people "via fax" before any Matrix like environments come up.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

It could be a software issue. However, the most common reason for reboots is heating. Especially since you said that the reboots occured only when you play games. It figured. While gaming, all of a PCs components are maxed out and generate a lot of heat. If after playing with the cabinet open, the system doesnt reboot, we know for sure its a heating issue. Let's observe the system for some more time and we'll go from there.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Okay, try running the PC and playing the games, only this time, keep the cabnet open. See if you notice any diff. Also, keep an eye on the fans in the cabinet. Make sure they're spinning rapidly.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Use a software like Everest (www.lavalys.com). Under computer>sensor, post the values you see.

Damned accurate.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

There really is no way to be sure without testing the processor on a known working board. Similarly, check the board with a known working processor.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I suppose you can use the hard drive, CD drive and the floppy drive. Other than that, since youre going for a brand new system, Id recommend new components like RAM, graphics etc. You could use the keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor off of your old system too.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

did you try the sony website? how abt customer support?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Remive the CMOS battery. Also, if the bboard has a CMOS reset jumper, short those pins. Doing so will clear the CMOS.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I think youre right. Did you try resetting the CMOS? If this didnt help, well, yeah, the board could be toast.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

or, if you have a number of IDE devices, just go in for a PCI IDE add on card. The card provides you with 2-4 IDE channels.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

The fact that it recognises CDs but not DVDs points to a problem with the pick-up mechanism. If the laptop is under warranty, send it back to gateway for a replacement. If not, send the drive in for repair.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Check the power and data connections. You can verify the power cable's plugged in if the drive's LED blinks when you switch on your computer or reboot your computer.

As for the data cable, just make sure both ends are plugged in securely. If that doesnt help, try swapping the data cable for a new one.

God, that has got to be one of the most hilarious jokes I have heard in a long time. LOL

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Hmm..didn't know about the 'Core RAM' thingy. If that is the case, then I guess all questions should be answered now.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Precisely. I have 1 gig and I always disable the pagefile. It actually improved my system's performance.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

368+128 doesnt really add up to 512. Can you list the display adapter it shows over there? Go to Device manager, and under 'display adapters' let us know what it says there. If indeed it is an onboard display, and is using only 128 megs, it is possible your RAM stick(s) may be bad.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You need to visit the webste of the vendor who made your board. Diff vendors have diff BIOS flash files, so you cant use a generic BIOS upgrade to flash your BIOS.

FYI, I suggest you flash the BIOS only if your system is facing some problems which are known to have been fixed by the BIOS upgrade. If you're not facing any problems, its best to leave the BIOS alone, because any mistake while flashing could render your board useless.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Well, it depends . Does your board support RAM in Dual channel mode? If yes, get two identical sticks of 400MHz. Preferably matched pairs from Corsair or Kingston. If your board doesn't support Dual Channel, I'd still recommend 2 sticks simply because if one of your ram sticks goes bad, you can still run the computer on the other stick.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Nizzy has some valid points. Check the CPU temp in the BIOS. Also, a good SMPS is crucial to running a powerful system like yours. You need an SMPS rated atleast at 450W with a minimum of 17Amos on the 12V rail.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Connect this new HD on another computer and recreate the partitions from within Windows.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try prying the key with a pin. If this doesn't help, well, you could invest in a new keyboard. They're really cheap these days.
