Well, see if the disk works on another computer. if it doesn't we know for sure that the CD is the culprit here.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Isn't Vista coming out on Jan 30th? I thought the November 30th deadline was for OEMs.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I'm facing the same issue and am currently looking for the solution, although so far I believe this happens due to a faulty PSU. Did you try changing the PSU?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

and if you have one of those old systems which dont power off automatically, but instead display the message "It's now safe to shut down the computer", you can edit the logos.sys in the same directory.

Also, if you wish to change the startup logo, make a bitmap file, 320x200 resolution with 256 color and ensure the file size is 127KB. Name this file logo.sys and place this in the root drive.

Note: logos.sys and logow.sys should also be bitmap files, 320x200 resolution with 256 color

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Is this CD which you're trying to use bootable ? That is to say if it's a copy, did you make a direct disk to disk copy or did you drag the files to it?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

could you describe in detail what you did and what you're trying to do?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If youre trying to access a web server on the machine behind the router, use a software called no IP dynamic update client. I used this on my network setup and it worked great. www.no-ip.com

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Do you hear any kind of beep codes from the BIOS? If yes, what are they?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Not too sure if theres a way of finding out using any software, but you could take a look at the power supply. It will have a sticker on it which states the complete specs of the unit, including the total wattage and the wattage on each rail.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

First, check in the BIOS and see if the hard drive is getting detected. If it is, use the Windows ME CD to boot to DOS mode and type the following commands:

fdisk /mbr
sys C:

and then check if the issue is resolved. If not, let us know and we'll see what else can be done, short of a complete reinstall.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Whoa there. did you run that command from a DOS window within windows? It won't work then. Use the Windows 98 CD to boot into DOS mode and type the command there.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Another message i receive is "Explorer has caused an error in NEWDOTNET7_22.DLL Explorer will now close."

This line shows that your computer has been infected with spyware. I recommend you download Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Adaware. Update the apps and then scan your system one at a time with both these programs. See if this helps. If not, get back to us and we'll go from there.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

For some reason, my windowes firewall has been disabled, and when i try to enable it, it says it has encountered a problem, please goto to the systematic website.

Are you talking about Windows Firewall or Symantec Firewall?

Try running the 'sfc /scannow' command to see if any critical system files are missing.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Not too sure about the log, but in such cases, i recommend running System Restore to restore the computer to a point where it was working. Use System Restore and see if you can resolve the issue.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Possibly. Although I prefer disabling the page file altogether. I wouldn't recommend doing this if you're a casual user and don't know how to find your way out if you mess up the system. But I've seen that my machine does perform better when the page file is disabled.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Did you try a System Restore to a point when the computer was running properly?

Or, try running sfc /scannow from the run box.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Also, you have to restart the computer after changing the page file settings.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

How'd you fix it? System Restore?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Before you install the NVIDIA drivers, install the standard microsoft VGA drivers and restart the computer. To do so, from Device Manager, choose to update the drivers manually for the graphics card. In the drivers list, select Standard VGA drivers from the left hand list and on the right hand side, choose Standard Driver (VGA compatible). After installing the VGA drivers, restart the computer twice (just to be sure) and then install the NVIDIA drivers and get back to us.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

This seems to be a problem with the fan itself. Especially now that you're getting that error message. If the card is in warranty, take it back to the retailer and get the fan replaced.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

This is a known issue. If a user is logged on and you use the Fast User Switching feature to login to another account, the CTRL+ALT+DEL twice trick does not work. For that, you'll need to log off the currently logged on user.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

123456

Sure to work for something, though I don't know what :)

It should work for a Kindergartener's first day.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Yup. That too. Best option in such a case would be to reset the BIOS to the defaults.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Me too. I remember when I forst got my Win98 computer. I used to access the Windows folder and never paid heed to the warning. When it said that a particular file is a system file and should not be deleted, I used to delete it to see what happens. End result? Rendered the system unbootable 6 times in the first month itself. But I sure as hell learned a lot....

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Also, what appears on the screen (if anything at all) when you shut the computer down? It's possible that the ACPI drivers on the system have gotten corrupted, and that's why the OS is not able to power the computer off. Try pressing and holding the power switch for 5 seconds and then see if you're able to power the system down completely.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I would say that this seems to be defective RAM. See if you can test the RAM sticks on another computer. If the other computer starts up normally, see if the processor is seated properly and that you've attached the heatsink properly. Try these 2 steps and get back to us about the results.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

What kind of a USB port are you connecting the drive to? USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? Sometimes, this issue occurs if you use a USB 1.1 connector. If the computer does not have a USB 2.0 port, you can purchase a PCI USB card. See if this resolves the issue.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

As mentioned before, buy the biggest capacity drive you can afford at the moment. Prices are crashing on a daily basis and it definitely makes sense to invest in a large capacity drive. If I was in your place, I'd go for a minimum 250 GB HD, as it's fairly future proof, and with Vista around the corner. Vista, after a fresh install occupies ~8.5 GB disk space.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Marking this thread as solved.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If the program has an option to disable the entry, go ahead and use that. If you delete it, the program thinks that it's corrupt and repairs the 'missing' entries.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Use the Windows XP CD to boot into recovery console and run the chkdsk /r command on the Windows drive. If that doesn't work, try a dirty reinstall (that's to say, a repair install) and see if this helps.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

And I've seen this happen to systems specifically with SiS hardware. And as mentioned before, update the chipset driver.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Thats' just a little inspiration to keep you posting.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I'd recommend Windows Defender as it performs a real time scan of your system. That's to say that it starts along with your computer and stays active all the while.

[Edit]: I just got an update that there can be a conflict with Windows Defender and Spybot's own resident scanner, TeaTimer. I'd recommend you turn off TeaTimer before running Defender.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Whoop-de-do. I have GOT to learn that 'nothing in my pocket' trick. Next time I go out with my friends, pretend you're broke and get a free treat.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You can't get the logon screen in Srver 2003...it just isnt there. 2003 will revert to the classic logon screen.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

the line G:\=Windows 98 -- in this, is G: drive the one with Win98? That is to say, whats the drive letter assigned by XP to the drive with Win98? If it's D:, then set it to D:\=Windows 98. Be advised that this partition should be active and should have the Win98 startup files.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

or you could try booting to the Recovery Console and use the command 'bootcfg /rebuild'. see if this command can help rebbuild the files. Also run a chkdsk /r to eliminate the possibility of disk errors

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Actually, Ive seen better performance if the page file size is set to 1.5 times the size of your RAM. So, for 1 gig, you need to set 1536 mb.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Or check if the machine is overheating. open the side panel and position a desktop fan inside the comuter. Try playing the game with the fan blowing air in the computer. If this is indeed a heating issue, the computer should not restart with the fan blowing air inside. See if this helps.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Im glad you dont squish the darn thing. Talk about phosphor burn on an LCD.

(I'm sorry. real lame one there)

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

So what do you do if a bug gets caught in the LCD screen?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Allright, allright. I'll smoke on your behalf now.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

well, a lot of application manuals tell you something like "click with the mouse on the printer to print".
Someone's bound to take that literally :)

They said 'ON' the printer, right? Not 'IN' the printer. hehehehe:mrgreen:

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Naah, it's not my printer. Some poor schmuck using his printer as a rat trap, I suppose

Caller: Hi, our printer is not working.
Customer Service: What is wrong with it?
Caller: Mouse is jammed.
Customer Service: Mouse? And how it is related to printer?
Caller: Mmmm.. Wait, I will send a picture

Now take a look at the attached file and tell me it didn't make you laugh
