I tried your suggestions and still no luck. In the BIOS I loaded the default settings and still nothing, I also reset this BIOS with the jumper on the mobo and no luck. Any other suggestions?

bios defaults may not have the pci slots enabled ,you may need to go deeper into the bios to enable them yourself.

Well to be specific about the video card I'm using, I'm using a Axle Geforce 7 series 7300GS video card, which would explain why it looks different than the picture you provided.

http://xs322.xs.to/xs322/07525/111.PNG
Thats what my video card looks like. The pins are under this little black piece thing which protects them. But apparently it is fairly loose and doesn't stick on too well.

ok,thats better ,i see how it works now .if you cant fix it you can buy an adapter to go from the blue avg to the dvi connection .

AFAIK, Windows XP installs very well on SATA drives, and never makes problems with SATA in general. Turn everything on, don't be afraid! Then boot from XP CD and install that thing. Everything should work!

you may need to install sata drivers[f6] if it fail to install ,not recognize the hdd.

A genuine thank you to Caperjack. AVG antispyware worked like a charm. Problem #2 is solved. Problem #1 seems to me will only be solved by reinstalling xp. Thanks again.

You can try a popular Outlook recovery tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST file. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files.

Detailed information about Advanced Outlook Repair can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe

Alan

must have a stake in that program ,twice i see you post in old threads ,does the demo give you a fix or do you have to first pay the $249.00

from what you are saying you can get windows xp to install fully with sata disabled .i find that strange ,but i have never loaded winxp on a laptop with sata drive, i thing you need to leave sata enabled ,but when you boot to winxp to install you have to f6 to load scsi or sata drivers ,usually from a floppy disk, you would obtain the sata controller drivers from the motherboard disk when doing this with a desktop computer .not sure if you have any disk with laptop, you may need to call compaq on this .

you have/had a serious infection that you may or may not be able to recover from with out re-install winxp.this is where i as a neighbourhood computer repair guy ,remove the hard drive and hook it to my compute and run virus scan, and spyware scan on it.if that doesn't help it then that i will try a winxp install over top. and if that doesn't work i then format the computer and reinstall winxp .

did that fix it .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yes they can ,bad ribbon cable or not hooked up right ,or something like that .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Sorry for the bad pictures. I used a quick cell phone camera (not a good idea). The pins that are broken are on the video card itself. Normally there is this wire-like thing that goes on top of it, but somehow that thing fell off when I was plugged in my video card or something, and broke the pin. To show you what I'm talking about, here is a pretty bad/simple picture of what I mean.

http://xs122.xs.to/xs122/07525/BrokenPin.GIF

Red indicated the broken pin.

if that picture is of your video card then where it says vga is where you plug you monitor in and the card fits into either a pci or agp slot on the mother board .

i dont see any pins on you card ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hi to all,
I trust that you are all enjoying the holidays, even those of us who have to work! ;o) I've got two problems which I know you bright sparks will help this old buddy with.

One: My computer freezes just after log-on. It shows the desk top and refuses to do anything after that. I'm running xp home sp2 and have tried everything I know but to no avail. I'm able to run it in safe mode and have saved all my files on a memory stick. Now I want to format the hd and re-install xp. But..., before I start I just want to make sure I'm going to do it right. Any help will be truly appreciated.

Two: I'm using my wife's computer in the mean time, but noticed something strange. There's a web address on IE "http://main.94ak.com/" which I don't recognise. I have deleted the cookies, files and history on IE properties and it shows clear, but this unknown address keeps appearing and when I click on it without going on line, it starts to run but after half an hour I stopped it, because nothing visible has appeared. I'm afraid that it might be something with malicious intent. When it runs the desk top screen appears on the IE page. Any explanations or comments are most welcome.

Regards,
Christiaan.

the site take me to mild Chinese porn ,i would scan computer with AVG antispyware and spybot search and destroy, both can …

also you could try removing and re-seating the ram, and the hard drive ,sometimes after sitting for long periods this need to be done

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

POSSIBLE BUT I THINK IT IS POWER SUPPLY OR MOTHER BOARD. SINCE THE POWER DOESN'T GO THROUGH

sounds good to me ,cheapest is to try buying a power supply cord first .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

try removing the power cord ,and holding in the power button for about 40 seconds ,then plug it back in and turn it on again .if nothing ,are you comfortable taking the side of the case ,and removing the ram ,if you have 2 sticks of ram ,remove one and try turning it on again .if nothing different ,take out the other and replace it with the first one .and try again , remember to unplug the tower and hold the power button in for 30-40 seconds when removing ram also,oh yeah if you only have one stick of ram you can't do this .
this is what ram looks like .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

first ,how do you know the hdd is whats not being detected ,do you get any error messages on the screen [no] nothing on the screen, then its likely a video card problem ,do you have a sound card ,network card ,modem ,or any other pci card install if yes remove them ,un-plug cdrom's and just hook up the harddrive ,and video ,If i remember correctly you motherboard dose not have onboard video ,so try one card and then the other .
if its not recognizing the hdd then it could be dead ,but i drought it !!
make sure the ide ribbon cable is install correctly and tight .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

upgrade for sure!looks like your old card is a PCI,and the new one is PCI-E[express]new technology ,does you board have pci-e slot.
check with the maker of the motherboard or you motherboard manual .

I want to do a clean install. How many discs come with a Win ME computer I have 3 recovery discs but none to erase all files. Should I have one more disc?

like i said in my last post ,the winxp cd will delete the partition, then you create a new partition and then format the drive and load winxp ,when you boot to it,you don't need winME disks to do it .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

How do I get Windows to load from the CD? How could I possibly run scandisk?

actually windows won't boot from the cd,but you can run the recovery console ,,when first booting computer hit DEL to enter setup/bios ,and go to boot section and choose cd-rom as first boot device ,then booting to the winxp cd ,chose R ,for repair ,then 1 for c:\windows and just hit enter if asked for password ,then at the prompt type in chkdsk /f , note there is a space between the k&/
depending on your computer maker you may need to hit f2,or f11 to enter setup instead of DEL,it should tell you on the first boot screen

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

The main thing is how I can get to my files
Thank you

you need to have the hard drive remove and connected to another computer ,either directly inside the case or with a usb external device and remove the file unto another computer ,remember to run a virus scan of the drive first ,before transfer of data

Also since I don't have the windows cd is there a way to make one using one of my laptops?

Thanks.

do you have a winxp cd belonging to one of you laptops ,if yes you could boot to that and go to the recover console and do a chkdsk /f.
depending on the age of you laptops ,if new ,you should be able to make recovery cd/dvd with them ,look for the option to do so in start /all programs ,maybe in accessories /system tools or just in all programs .
if it has a floppy drive you could get winxp boot disk at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Should I use the ME format disc and completly remove everything from the computer first?

wouldn't be a upgrade if you did that ,it would be a full/fresh install, you will lose all created data and personal info if you do that .but it is the best choice ,over a upgrade .you wouldn't need the me disk to format ,as the winxp will do this when you boot to it to install it .check this sticky in the windows forum .

I was wondering about getting a new video card for my lap top and i was wondering what will be the best for me I have a Pavillion dv4000 a processor of intel(R)Pentium(R)M processor 1.60GHZ and DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). I was wondering what video card would work the best on my computer and what will give me the best preformance. Thank you, Michael.

most laptops don't have the option of changing video chips as they are built into the motherboard . .you will have to check with HP to be sure or do a little internet search on the laptop .

yes ,but what im trying to tell you to do is this .get a hardrive

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Yea, if it was my computer I would be completely fine with it. Only it's not.

i learned a long time ago to leave peoples computers alone ,unless there are a customer of mine ,then my not responsible policy is in effect .

So, when you run scf/Scannow stuff, does it overwrite everything? It doesn't erase any of the data there, does it?

it overwrites nothing ,only check for missing or corrupt windows files ,not personal data ,its a system tool command only .we are not going to stear you wrong .
