Hello,

I have a Dell inspiron 600m and I ran into this issue last week when I suddenly cant boot up my laptop. A cranky noise from the compartment made me believe that the HDD had crashed and I therefore replaced it with a new WD - EIDE, PATA, one listed here

However even after replacing it with the new one, i still cant get rid of the problem, the system just wont boot up and keeps looping back between BIOS and the error message "Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 Not Found"

Looking at the BIOS, the Primary Hard Disk entry still shows 'None'
I have already reset the BIOS but still not haveing any luck.

Can anyone please advise what could be wrong here and what else can i do to resolve this?

Could it be that i am using an incompatible HDD?

many thanks,

Tom

hi ,you need to install windows or someother OS on the harddrive first

C and D Drives are my boot drive and the HP System partition to restore back to XP. Nah NO HAPPENING. Any help? Anyone who reads this. Who turned it off in Admin......Disc Management.......NOT ME!

not sure what you mean but ,

Wasn't sure about his reasoning for that either.

also it shouldn't be getting full ,should not have changed as it not meant to add any files to it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Meaning, keep it at fat32, changing to NTFS is a one-way process.

i just said that as im confused to his backing up the recovery partition ,and what would happen to it on a ntfs drive , nothing i assume ,if its just backed up to a folder on the ntfs drive . ,and not changing the recovery partition from fat32 to ntfs
its fat32 usually because its a norton ghost image .

Iget the clean install I make my own PC's and repair them. I just thjought that as before, if I reinstalled Windows over Window it just destroyed the registry settings but installed over the C:\Windows\ directory and left all other files and folders in place. Guess not, they messed up the transition from XP to Win 7 for millions thansk BILL GATES you you make millions messing up millions. Par for his course.
Thanks for your info.
Jim

i have only installed a few time so far but you know i think it dos if it finds a windows installed it will create a windows.old folder with all the files

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Can you reformat and shrink the partition so you can make it one drive?

yes, just format and then you expand the other partition to make it one again

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Can you reformat and shrink the partition so you can make it one drive?

you sure are full of questions .lol ,
win vista and win7 will shrink the drive for you, go to disk management, in control panel, admin tools and you can do it there, just right click on the drive and chose your options .
careful when loading win7 that you chose the correct partition

Well I am more confused and so I will have to use a clean install. Will it remove the partition or will it just leave the files and Iwill have to reinstall everything but it does not reformat?
.

if you have files that you can use to reinstall programs you want like for your dvd ,them why don't you back them up to a dvd now so you will have them to reinstall after the win7 install .
I don't know what you use you dvd for but i burn ISO files mostly ,but i also backup file to dvd and play dvd movies and didn't have to buy any programs to do so .win7 does it all for me .
nor sure if the install will remove and create a new partition but it will definitely format it ,and you will loose all file currently on the partition .thats why they call it a clean install .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I think that's included in the "fix boot problems" process, I also ran a hard disk check from MiniPE, would chkdsk do something else I'm not thinking of?

chkdsk will fix windows errors ,like device driver conflicts and such .the update could have cause a driver conflict of sorts .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I am told that you can upgrade Windows 7.0 RC to Windows 7.0 Final version.
I only see an upgrade to Ultimate is there a workaround to go to Windows 7.0 Professional.

not sure ,but i think you are right ,you could upgrade to Ultimiate .
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-considerations.aspx

I have a HP Pavillion a1410n Desktop and it came with XP the restore discs are XP.

not sure what difference that would make

I have Win 7 RC installed and all is well but it is a MEDIA CENTER version and if I do a custom or clean install I will loose all of the other programs.
HELP!

also not sure what difference it makes that its a media center addition ,I have win7 ultimate and it has windows media ,yes if you do a full install you will lose all program you installed since you installed the RC edition .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

No, Safemode doesn't work, and Last Known Good Configuration doesn't fix anything.

what i would try now is booting to windows cd and and go to prompt and do a "chkdsk /r"

Method 2A: Offline System Restore
Use this method when you have the Windows Vista installation CD or DVD. If you do not have the installation disc, go to method 2B.
Prerequisite
To use offline System Restore, you must have a Windows Vista CD or DVD. Additionally, your computer must be configured to start from the CD or DVD drive. In some cases, you may have to modify the BIOS settings on the computer to configure the computer to start from the CD or DVD drive. For more information about how to configure the computer to start from the CD or DVD drive, see your computer documentation or contact the computer manufacturer.

First, start the computer from the CD drive. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows Vista CD or DVD, and then restart the computer.
2. When you receive the following message, press any key:
Press any key to boot from CD or DVD.
3. Set the following preferences, and then click Next:
* Language to install
* Time and currency format
* Keyboard or input method

Then, use offline System Restore to remove the Windows Vista service pack. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Repair your computer, select the operating system that you want to repair if it is necessary, and then click Next.
2. Click System Restore, and then click Next.
3. Click to select the Restore Point …

I am running Verizon Internet Security by Radialpoint. Will I need to do anything with this program to run the anti-malware and ccleaner? You are also saying that it does not matter if the recovery drive is almost full as far as computer speed, correct? Thank you.

the recovery partition has nothing to do with windows being slow ,Its just storage of the windows recovery ,incase you need to reload windows to your laptop .
the version IS shouldn't cause any problem with malwarebytes

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Also where do I save this backup I am supposed to do during the Reg Cleaner process?

where ever you want .i just save it to my documents folder .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I have an HP pavillion and my D:recovery drive is almost full less than 1G available,

should not be a problem, also you should not have added anything to it as it for recovery only,to be used along with the recovery cd you should have !it should be let alone in case you need it to recover the computer

while my C: Drive still has plenty of space available. I have an external hard drive and copied the entire D: drive to it. My D: is FAT32 and External drive is NTFS will there be a compatability problem?

should not be a problem as long as when you copy it back the recover partition is still fat32

recovery partition will not slow down your computer ,
try a little cleaning with ccleaner .and malwarebytes .

It's malware. I just had the same problem.

The only way I could get control was to unplug the Internet connection, then start the browser. After the page load failed, I could change the settings to not automatically load the last page used. The malware had changed the setting to download the last page used if the browser closed unexpectedly.
