The computer is about 2 years old and came with xp. but the recovery disk evidently uses 98.

How can I tell if it's recognizing the new hd?

just for the heck of it i would go to www.bootdisk.com and get a win98 bootdisk and fdisk and format the hdd.then try try recovery cd.,also possible the the recovery cd was just for excessing the hdd recovery partition on the old drive .

ok clear a mud .lol
do other usb devices work in the ME machine

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you may need to go into the bios and set it to detect legacy usb keyboard

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

IAnd it is mentioned in the little manual that came with it that it is driver-less in Windows Me.

that could be taken both way ,it is driver less in ME could also mean there is no ME driver written for this device .when connected to winxp it uses XP drivers for the deivce ,its not driver less in XP !it has to use drivers no matter what OS,im thinking it could be a usb 2.0 ,usb 1.1 issue .it may be usb 2.0 and not be backward compatible to 1.1

How funny, this is the exact problem my daughter is having. The problem started three days ago when she was playing the SIMS. She shut down when the game froze up. When she restarted she got the error that Windows was improperly shut down. She brought it to me (IT manager) and every option you try for reboot initiates a another reboot. From Safe mode on down, each option generates a reboot which brings you back to the restart options anever gets past the startup of Windows. My daughter's laptop is a one year old Compaq similar to the original poster's unit.

A Compaq problem I am thinking? A flaw with that line of processors or motherboards? We have Compaq laptop that is 2 years older that does not experience this problem.

Please let me know if you have an insight. Thanks!

Barbara Coleman

this is not a computer problem ,its a Microsoft windows problem ,the abrupt shutting down of the laptop caused the problem, windows was unable to write to the hard drive to properly shut down the laptop .you need to boot to the windows cd and do a repair ,you may get away with a chkdsk /r or you may need to do a fixboot, anyway at the repair prompt type in help ,for a list of commands

I have an Nvidia GS 7300 graphics card. I opened my computer to add a new part to it, but it didn't fit. Then when I booted the computer up, the colors were all different. I checked, and I had lost all of my red colors (couldn't display any red). When I took the video card out, I saw that one of my pins were broken clean right off. I was wondering if it was possible to repair the pin on my video card? Or any recommendations of new, low priced video cards. I also tried to provide pictures to show you what i mean (sorry if they are low quality, I used my phone camera) My VGA cable connects on top of these pins

http://xs222.xs.to/xs222/07514/BrokenPin2.png

not very good pictures, trying to figure out if the set of pins with the broken one are on the video card or on the motherboard .a lot of times sets of pins like that are intentionally mission a pin.did you find the broken off pin!what plugs into that set of pins, also what new part did you open the case to but in and it did not fit !???

and more fans need more power ,does that increase the temperature ?

good ? ,but they don't use that much power ,and the power supply has a fan of its own to cool it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I decided to add two more fans to my cabinet ,when I discussed with my friends they said that it will only rise the temperature . is that true ,does more fan icrease the motherboard temperature?

the purpose of a fan is to either remove hear or bring in cooler air ,not increase temp! your friends are wacky .you should have a fan bringing cool air into the lower front of the case and a fan taking warmed air out upper the back ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i agree ,don't expect much from the low end Acer ,good for email and surfing ,Games , maybe the microsoft windows games that are pre-install .my daughters friend have then hidden in the closet [from there fathers ],because they broke in the first year ,got replaced ,and then broke again after the guarantee was up. I bought my daughter a Compaq ,1 1/2 yrs old ,never had a minutes problem with it good for Internet and Collage work ,i have 4 broken laptops in the house right now ,raging from 5 -3 yrs old all are Toshiba

I have a biostar motherboard that has an AGP 2.0 slot and want to know if i can add the ATI Radeon 9500 Pro card to it? the card says it supports up to 8X and is compatible with the lower speeds of 1X/2X/4X does this mean it's a AGP Pro card. Can this card fit in my system?

Biostar U8668-D Ver 7.2

we will need the version of the biostar board you have ,i have a biosstar board p4m266a-8235 agp v 2.0 and have the ati radeon 9250 card installed ,but i don't know if the card is a pro or not .

I got home from work today and rather than logging in, I restarted my computer so it would run faster.

how did you restart it ,by going to start /turn off computer ,and click restart .or did you click a restart button on the front of the case .,also what does a flicker sound like .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

no, no BIOS, the screen dosen't even break from standby.

ive checked the seating a thousand times. the only thing i can think of is the Mobo. *GULP*

am i being rash, or is there anything i can do?

thanks.

did you unplug the computer from the power source ,hold the power button in for about 30 seconds to drain power from motherboard ,did you touch the metal case to ground yourself before touching the ram stick.!! if no you could have fried the ram chip ,dose the computer work with just the one stick of ram in that you didn't remove .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

No, I didn't get grounded

don't misunderstand the question, you should have grounded yourself, to get rid of any static electricity from your body,so you wouldn't short out the laptop.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

when i search the model# you have in a previsous post it looks as though you board goes by 2 numbers ,i get this,MS-6728 =865PE Neo2-PFS
and i have found specs that say it doesn't support the 3.3v agp ,its not the pro agp slot !
also hard to find info on it because it's a older discontinued board .

http://www.motherboard.cz/mb/msi/865PENeo2-PFSPlatinumEdition.htm

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hmmm...how do I find this out?

it might be written on the card ,or you will need the motherboard specs it will be in them .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Eh. I missed it. No big deal, really.

never said there was !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Okay. Though what I was really wondering was how do i know if a card is AGP or PCI Express if I were to go searching for another card?

As one site I read was mentioning things about PCI Express...

when you go to the store ,they will have a display of video cards and it will say on the box what kind it is ,what you will really need to know is if you board supports both the 1.5 volt and the 3.3 volt cards or just the 1.5 v,as the 3.3 will not work if it only take the 1.5v.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague
caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i showed you this info before ,but its your motherboard and the info is clear ,
AGP 3.0 (4X & 8X Speed at 1.5 and 0.8 Volt Only)
my ? to you is what is wrong with the video card you have now !!

also this in the pdf file i downloaded from intel site ,
The AGP connector is keyed for 1.5 V and 0.8 V AGP cards only. Do not attempt to install a legacy3.3 V AGP card. The AGP connector is not mechanically compatible with legacy 3.3 V AGP cards.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yes it could be you psu, also bad psu can cause Processor and motherboard problems ,it also could be dust build up on the cpu fan ,causing a heat problem ,also you should try removing all addin cards ,like sound and you video card, if you have onboard video use it instead ,when install windows .and the dvd not reading the disk could just be that its not in the list of bootup disks ,or because its the slave on the ide cable .

well according to the label on the hard drive the jumper is right, unless because the other hard drives have less jumper pins, does that affect it?

no ,if you had a master and a slave drive all ready ,then it should be just a matter of making sure the new drive is set to slave and hooked to same cable as old slave drive and it should have worked ,
good nite ,Im going to lala land

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i did the boot cd of it and when i went to setup the harddrive it couldnt find any hard drives to setup

without seeing you have the jumper's right there isn't much i can say except maybe you got a bad hdd!

Could be that, no one is in front of the doors, no moving or bobbing, nothing out of the ordinary. Just sitting in one spot, randomly cuts out and the router has to be reset. Even in other parts of the house, no difference. Do you think changing the channel would make a difference?

it might , cordless phones can interfere ,they operate the same way, cant hurt to try different channel,

could be bad/loose connection between the power cord and the plugin on the laptop,What kind of laptop is it .
it should have nothing to do with ram or the cmos battery .

took it to geek squad technicians and they told me my harddrive was going bad so it needs to be replaced and gave me a killer price.!!!
What might have gone wrong?
Then I thought I should do it myself by getting a software from Spotmau.com. LOL .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you have one hdd ,why do you need to install raid drivers ,you really should do a format reinstall ,but a install over might work, also things could go wrong and you could lose all data on the drive so a backup is recommended,i never do though ,
