Can't be done ,you can reinstall windows over itself ,
check this tutoral from another help site ,i use it a lot . i do believe this only workes with orignal copy of winxp ,not a winxp recovery cd.

Well ya thats what I need to do IS format the drive and reinstall windows so how do I do that. And the floppy disk thing is really confusing no offense ;)

If you are confused about the floppy ,then maybe it time to take you computer in for repair ,no ofence.

How do I remove everything on my hard drive without windows washer because I can't afford It now I went to my computer and right clicked on drive c and clicked format but It said that I have utilites open In that drive so how do I cancel them even though I dont think I have any running......lol. Hi ,i think you are confusd as to the use of window washer ,it is for to the best of my knowlage a tool to remove unwanted item from you harddrive, not format it .and you say you have nothing running to stop the format ,when you right clicked on C:\ ,you do have windows running don't you .!!
You can't format windows in this manner as windows is running ,this format features only workes on slave drives in the computer .floppy disk or usb thumb drives.also formating a harddrive will remove everything and you will need to reinstall windows .

Format a blank floppy as a MS-DOS boot disk (it is an option in the format dialog). A:> prompt. Enter "Format c:" and follow the prompts.

yes this will make a msdos boot disk but it will not have the format command on it unless you put it there .
Better to go to www.bootdisk.com ,get a win98 boot sisk image and open it and it will auto go to the blank floppy in you drive .

Went to run a virus scan but the comp wont even go past the windows xp screen..all I get is a green screen with lines running down it. Tried to go into safe mode but can not read the screen so now I am really stumped on what to do??

make sure there isn't a bent pin on the video card to monitor cable connection ,you may have a bad video card

Video card might look like its in right ,but sometime it out of the slot slightly on one end,!!,make sure its in fully on both ends ,if its AGP[brown slot ] make sure the little lock ,if one exists, is in lock position

Yes I am referring to the whole tower as a hard drive, oops hehehe. I did not do a fresh install of windows. The harddrive thats in the tower I was given has Windows xp professional on it and I only have home edition so I want to keep xp pro.

thought so, its ok to keep it ,did you try changing the refresh rate back a bit to say ,60 and see what happens .

it's a great hardrive with everything I want in it.

I suggest you call your ISP and complain to them about you speeds !!

sounds like you need to go into the bios/setup when you first boot the computer and set the first boot to be the cdrom .

I found out the media player was corrupt. I installed my dvdplayer software and it worked fine.

Its not corrupt ,its comes with out and dvd codex ,when you install you dvd software it installed the dvd codex on you computer ,then wmp fides it and started using it .

Sorry, but do you mean 640 MB or 640kb. If its the latter (which I am guessing it is,) then no. Windows needs a minimum of 16MB to run. And Windows 98-higher needs a minimum of 64mb

if you use winxp get the latest updates[sp2] to stop the messenger service as its been fixed in recent updates

The problem is caused because you don't have a dvd decoder installed and wmp doesent come with one so i solde this problem by installing other dvd player like windvd or powerdvd ,anyway have a look atthis site to.

What;s happened here is that shell32.dll(an extremely important system file) has become corrupt. Your going to have to reinstall Windows.

Hi, i built my computer and it ALWAYS freezes/restarts when i do CPU or RAM intensive stuff. i.e games, or installing windows. Do you think that this problem is probably because of the RAM ? I am pretty sure its not overheating, because it is well ventilated. What memory check program should i use to check my RAM. ...and if it is the ram, does this mean i need to buy new ram ? uhoh. Ram test only test the ram for error ,it will not tell you if the ram is compadiable with you mother board ,ive seen computers work all right but freeze from time to time because the ram was incompadiable ,sometime 2 stick by different manufactor and the like anyway try mamtest86 it free let it run over night .

Sorry sometimes im hard to understand i know .the gist of it is this ,your repair is looking for a certain .EXE to continue ,if you can get the exe and put it on a usb thumb drive you could copy it to you hard drive so it could find it ,you could use the linux cd boot version you say you have to do this ,you will need to search the net to find out more info on how to do it ,

Yes yo uwill loose all data when you format ,but if you have a usb thumb drive ,and lenux that boots from the cdrom you could copy the important stuff to the thumb drive before you format .
Now ,having said all the above, thats what i would try , im sorry i can't help you any further , Caperjack

Ok you have lenux booting from cd ,do you have a ubs thumb drive to transfer the missing file to the hdd ,still not sure if winxp repIR will find the file ,you will need to know where to put it !!,you will need to know where the rpair install is looking for it .

right i guess,not to be pickey but if by chance they are still using win95 ,and a lot are ,it will not boot to disk !!

not sure what to tell you, but assumming you have onboard intel video ,maybe if you have motherboard disk that would have came with the computer ,you could put it in the cd drive and it will find the file needed .

please correct this statement, as outllook and microsoft oultlook are the same program ,do you mean outlook express for one of them !!
any whay to use microsoft outllok you need to have outlook express install on you computer .so if it not installed you can go to control panel/add and remove programs /add windows components ,in the list find outlook express ,if its check uncheck it click on then recheck the box and click ok to reinstall outlok expresssssss

I haven't been able to boot my xp machine for a couple of weeks, and decided to "repair" it with the xp cd (SP1) And there wasent no problems at all until the computer restarted like it was supsosed to, and began to install some files, or something like that. Then it came up with a message saying that it needed the file igfxext.exe (intel(r) graphics media accelrator)
And in the window there was a OK, Cancel and a Browse button. But the mouse and the keyboard was totally effectless??

win98 will not see the ntfs

if any file remain on you old drive ,its just a simple drag and drop to the working computers harddrive ,through the window file manager, shortct to that is the windows key +E, no software needed ,then when you get a new harddrive and install windows on it ,you can slave it back to the other computer and copy the files back to the new drive and then put it back in your computer .Giving all i said you may not beable to axcess the drive for varisous reasons ,the main one beinf a hardware failure of the drive ,i have one here now that im trying to get files off ,but can't and never will .it spins with a lot of clicking but is not seen by my computer . !

best thing to do is remove your failing harddrive and have it installed in another computer as slave and copy important data to drive of other computer,

could be video drive ,have you check to make sure you have the latest drivers for you video card .

really old computer ,really new video card ,is most likely incompatible with the motherboard
