Good afternoon,
I have a strange and frustrating problem with the start menu on a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Compaq Presario laptop.
If you click 'Start' as normal and double click on any applications as normal then they do not open. I have to right click the application and select 'Open' in order for the application to open.
But to confuse the issue further the Control Panel opens as normal with a double click. So it appears to be shortcuts to .exe files that do not open after they have been double-clicked.
Has anyone any ideas what could be causing this irritation??
Many thanks for your help in advance.
Paul.
dose it happen to exe shortcuts on the desktop also ,if so try double clicking with the right button ,might be that you mouse settings are lefthanded .if so they can be change in the controle panell
 As I have had no replies at all to my problem re upgrading to Microsoft 2003 (27th August) I am going to do a reformat and hope that will solve the problem. Can anyone tell me how I can take a copy of all my e-mail folders beforehand as I have lots of saved messages in folders which I would like to keep. I have already been able to export my address book. Hope someone will be able to help me this time.
Many thanks in advance.
Mary (Scotland)
hello ,assuming you are using outlook express as your email program ,open outlook ,go to tools/options/maintenence/and click on store folder ,this will show the path to outlook store folder .then using burner or thumb drive copy /burn the whole outlook folder .after you reinstall windows ,re-create your email profile in outlook ,then copy the folder you saved to the location of the new store folder and choose to overwrite when asked to do so !!
when i go start>all programs>pc tools and click on it, i get three programs that i have checked out, but will never use. they are swapdrive, intermute, and netsmartz.
sounds to me they are more likely features of the pc-tools program, and not programs in themself, therefor not much chancs you will be able to delete them .me thinks !!
You do not need a router to simply connect the 2 computers to each other, nothing more (for example, no Internet). This type of network is called "ad-hoc mode", because there is no central location.
OK i didn't know that ,just found this site .
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_02april08.mspx
How do I open regedit again?
Thanks
Michelle
Start/run type in regedit. check this site

You will need a wireless router to create a wireless axcess point to share printer and internet ,not sure if you will be able to all that cna be done when you have a wired network!!check this site and many others found with a Google search .

buy a cheap pci card ,will solve all your problems
chaky thanks for ur concern, but i have changed my drivers many times but it has not solved the problems, even i got the latest drivers for realtek.
i think the problem is in the sound hardware part of the motherboard.
if you open the case you will see the sound chip near the plugin for the speakers ,my advice to you is to buy a cheap PCI sound card ,diasble the onboard and install a pci card ,like this one .http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=L-8738-4C&cat=SND

Hi, I went ahead and ordered it and I hope it fix the problem. So in mean time I will have to wait 3 or 4 weeks before it gets here.
In my opinion this disk will not solve you problem,as its only the same install of sp2 that you downloaded, what you need to do is slip stream [ http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp ]sp2 into a copy of you xp disk or borrow a newer disk from a fried that has sp2 in it .
Hi, I recently installed a piece of software on my laptop. Following this I restarted the computer, and now it take ages to restart, switch off and turn on. Generally the computer is running extremely slowly.

I can't do anything with the computer, it's really slow, doesn't load and i cannot use IE!
I know that it is XP 'cos it says so!

Hello ,try f8 on bootup and go to safe mode and try and change monitor refresh rate .
If you go to Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced button/Adapter tab, you will find refresh settings option. Optimal or 60 might be worth a try.
Hi, it ried the bbc site and part of it let me choose between real player or windows media player ,but the music section wanted to use real player ,i don't have it and don't want it .so i can't listen to the music section .so maybe you need to update real player .

try this ,

If you've already wiped your drive:1. If you only have the "Upgrade" version of Windows XP, you'll be forced to reinstall an older version of Windows.
You don't need to install older version ,just have cd read to put in when asked for proof of ownership ,
somewhere in the settings of word ,its set to check file for virus, that is why its tring to install norton ,i do believe ,Im not sure where in word the setting is though .
assuming you have 2 cdrom type drive ,go inside the case and dissconnect the other ,leaving the dvd rom connected ,make sure you set the jumper on the dvdrom to master .having said that you should be able to set it to boot first in the boot section of the bios .
hit f8 on startup and go to safe mode to try system restore
It started laggin after that Windows Update mess up. And now won't load the virus scanner. It won't let me do an online one either.
Did you try a system restore back to a date before the windows update messup
Hi,
After formatting my laptop and installing windows xp, after a few months, i decided to update it, but when i clicked on the icon, it identified that my windows is not genuine, and everytime i want to insall anything else, it keeps on giving me the same message and i can't install anything. I would appreciate if someone would tell me what i should do? Is it necessary to reformat the drive or uninstall windows?
Thank u
Hi,First ? is the windows install on your computer jenuine! if not, you will have to format to reload the genuine version .
Hi ,welcome to daniweb ,thry a online viruse scan to clean you computer ,sounds like you have something stoping your installed ones ,go here to trendmicro.its free and safe .

Hi there, new here so please bear with me,I have a problem in that after replacing a faulty cd rom windows will not boot up,what I get on booting is a message saying one of your drives needs checking for consistency,I let it check and the message comes back no errors found, after trying everything I know, and cheking and reseating all connections inside the computer with no improvement,I put in the Reload/backup Cd and Norton Ghost did its thing, after about 25 minutes I get the message to press any key to reboot, and windows does indeed look like its going to boot up but after a few seconds the progress indicator hesitates, then starts and it goes to a black screen and there is nothing more, not even after leaving it for 50 minutes in the hope that something might happen....I have run memtest and that comes back with no errors,so now Im stuck ...and would appreciate any help you could give me
did you try removing the new cdrom !!
sounds to me like the software doesen't reconise your dongle unit .check with there tech support for an answer
It is a clean install and I only have a genuine windows 98 but I have
a windows xp upgrade which I will be putting on over it
hi ,you don't need to install win98 first to use the upgrade ,you just use xp and when asked you put the win98 cd in as proof of ownership of previous version, win98
If you use a RJ45 Cable, you can connect, and enter a new one.
You should have received one in the box with the other stuff.
? in what box
Hey, I have a wireless network in my house, connecting my desktops. I just bought a new laptop, and I want to conect to the network, but I dont know the network key. Is there any way to find this key on one of my already-networked desktops?
Don't quote me on this but it think not ,i believe if you didn't write it down you will need to reset router and reinstall the softwear and set the Wep again and get new # ,write it down this time .
hi the same problem happened to me. i trie everything but can not get rid of bearshare. if u could possibly give me alittle more details on how to get rid of it i would really appreciate it. thnx
I think the best solution is the removable caddy,2 hdd ,2 windows installs . ,shutdown take your out ,put it away ,let son install his when he uses the computer .
The M105 comes with 1 Gb ram in two slots. One of the slots is user upgradable via a door on the bottom of the laptop. According to the user“s manual, the other slot is "qualified technician upgradable". The M105 can be ugraded up to 4 Gb in two slots. The correct model is Satellite M105-SP381
Thanks
giving that you know all that the answer is ovisious
Thanx AJZ, - Would this prevent viruses and spyware from accessing the unassigned disk?
what are you going to use the second OS for ??????????? if you don't plan on using it on the net ,you could go with a hdd cage, 2 actuall install one and use the iner part of the other for the second drive ,
http://www.storcase.com/removable/removable_overview.asp
do you get anything to show on the monitor .
if so hittiting the F8 key go to safe mode maybe ,try resetting the bios to defaults via jumper on the motherboard ,jumper usually next to battery on the board .
Does anyone know how I can upgrade the internal memory slot of a Toshiba Satellite M105-SP381?
Thanks,
more info please, and you trying to add another ram chip or a chip that is bigger than yours ,it has 2 slots ,how much ram does it have now ,anyway usually as simple as remove a door on the bottom of laptop and adding another chip.
the power supply works perfectly fine..
Did you try the power supply in and another computer ,or are you saying the above just because it lights the lights and runs the fans ,if so that doesn't mean its supplying the right amount of power to boot the computer
have you tried F8 and choose last know configeration ,
maybe hes not getting enough power !!
many thanks but spare bits are not readily available to me....but i will investigate.....any other info will be appreciated
some time after a lot of use the connection between the power plug and the motherboard can brake away from the board of the laptop and need to resoldered, try to wiggle the cord at the laptop connection when turning it on,
as said above the board or even the cpu could be dead.i had simular Dell one with a dead battery and it would not start without the battery connected ,bought new battery and it worked great
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Repair-Windows-XP-t138.html
try this for a install over excisting winxp

Someone at work said I could take out my drive, put in an extra one that I have - set up as master, re-attach the buggered one as a slave and then access it like a storage drive. Does this sound like something that I could do without totally screwing it up?
Thanks!
that will work if the extra one you have has windows 98 installed or you will have to install windows on it ,then copy file from buggered one to the extra one for safe keeping ,the knoppix way works with the right righ know how and a usb thumb drive or a good hdd to copy file to.
The easiest thing to do is remove your drive, set it as slave, and install it in a friends computer or one at work and remove you files /data for safe keeping
your welcome ,glad to have helped ,hope all goes well .
