Oops. Meant to say short test. But this is valuable information. Quick question, though, on the back of the PSU there is a switch to change the voltage from 115 to 230. If I turn it up to 230 do I run the risk of burning out my motherboard? Or would it not make a difference if the PSU is not putting out what it's supposed to anyways?

no don't change that ,it will not work at all on 230 , because you house is only wired 120.
if you dont have a digital multi meter ,then take the PSU out and take it to local computer/electronic shop and have them test it for you

maybe the newer drive stopped working ,and if the 2 drives were jumper set to cable select ,then the old drive would still be-able to be the boot drive ,unhook older drive/with just the newer drive attached and see what happens on boot-up

It maybe the power supply ,and of all the device it can be, the power supply is one of the easiest to change for troubleshooting

hi go to control panel /mouse /device properties ,and it should have a disable there,at least mine does ,i ,there may be other ways but all laptops are different,mine has Synaptics pointer device install ,and also has a icon by the clock and i can disable it there as well , ,my Compaq and a on off but right next to the touch pad

so did you try formatting it ntfs ,although i don't think it will matter ,but cant hurt to try ,

i would take it to a computer it works on if it does work on other computers, take the file off it and format it and start a new .then see if it works on your computer fine if not ,
this may have already been covered ,but what happens if you unplug all external usb devices ,go to device manager and uninstall all usb devices ,reboot windows to reinstall them ,then try the faulty device before adding any of the other usb devices

like most thing when they break, if you want to be able to play dvdsw in you car then yeah you will need to buy a new one to do so .
did you try a disk cleaner ,it may be as simple as a dirty eye,they can be bought at your local car audio shop,and the shop may even do a cleaning for a small fee or even check out the drive for you .they will for sure be able to sell you a new one .

Hi,year old video card ,has it ever been cleaned of dust ,they do get really dirty and start over heating and shutting down

well you cant take it apart unless you have a dust free environment to do so,

the inside of the harddrive resembles a record turntable ,when you dropped it the arm with the needle hit the spinning HDD platter causing the damage ,repairable maybe but very expensive .try slaving it to another computer and retrieving the files ,or using a external case to put the drive into .if you have no access to such devices take it to a computer shop and see if they can get file for you ,then buy a new HDD

did you try safe mode with networking ,hitting f8 on startup .do you have antivirus program on the computer to run and check for viruses

sounds like it could be malware/trojan/virus problem .Check out our virus section ,i guess you'll have to download the programs suggested on another computer to run them .

when you put the xp disk in the drive ,can you see the file on it with windows explorer

what bios setting did you change.

in vmware when you click on the guest operating system ,do you still have the winxp bootable disk in the cdrom drive

Finally got it to install, don't quite know how. Just left it alone for ages, and when I looked it was showing the green 'enter user/password' screen.
Looks pretty enough, but it couldn't see my internet connection - cable 30Mb. Said I needed to install a driver - from where?
That limited a lot of what I could do. Any ideas how to get round that?
Incidentally EFI didn't work. That really screwed up any attempt to install the OS.

what you would need is the driver for the network device/card in the computer ,thats usually found on the maker of you computers website .

ks.sys is a windows system file ,i would try goint to start/type into the search, CMD ,when the command prompts icon comes up ,right click qon it and chose run as admin, in the cmd promt ,type with out the ", "sfc /scannow" note the space between the c and / ,it may or may not as for the windows disk ,it will replace missing or corrupt windows system files .
if no joy from that try ,from the same prompt "chkdsk /r" again without the ""

What version of Windows are you trying to install ,and where are you installing the OS from a cd/dvd or file downloaded from the internet

i uninstalled vmware a few months back and only used it a few times ,install 3 different windows versions before i uninstalled .got some errors after installing one of them ,related to using a virtual drive to install winxp files from a iso file.
got the error when the xp files were unmounter in the virtual drive ,

not sure,although i have 2 hotmail acct i use windows live mail 2011 to open them avoiding the hotmail web page altogether.

don't think you will be able to change what news Windows Live shows on there web pages.

I have purchased 5, mind you, full retail version of XP 4 home and 1 pro. That is thousands of dollars. Every single one of them has petered out on activations. A hard drive dies here, A motherboard there, ram there. It is ridiculous. The last copy I bought a few years back, didn't activate straight out of the box. Wouldn't activate via the autophone thing. Took an hour with the rep. Had to email freaking pictures to them and everything. This is the same day I bought the damn software. This is just ridiculous, and I really don't have a choice but to buy it again, do I. Put up with the inferiority of linux, which nothing runs on, or randomly pay for another copy of windows every time my hardware tanks. The alternative is to commit a felony.

Windows XP is good,but Windows 7 is way better for me with very nice UI.

i didn't answer because i don't have time to try and figure out what drivers you need ,sorry ,but i will add this that you must have DVD driver installed because you already tried to play a dvd in the drive and wmp couldn't play it right ,and the codex in the link i gave should have made it work ,
i will also add this ,try downloading this player and use it instead of using windows media player .

Well I would say windows xp is the ideal OS for uses than the windows 7, because windows xp got the priority to support all most all the software, but windows 7 is limited for only particular software.

one computer type for most if not all of those ram is, intel X86 ,and AMD based boards used most of them

also MAC's used most of those types ,don't think they used EDO Ram

what kind of network problems are you experiencing when both computers are on,do the computer have different names [you know the name given the computer when windows is installed ] ,not sure but i dont see what the bios serial #,or the motherboard #. would have to do with networking ,what i read it just tell the chipset used on the MB,the board maker,ect ect .
maybe ,depending on the networking problems you are having ,you might just change the name [of one computer ] given to the computer when windows was installed

if you mean files you downloaded and not the saving of temp internet webpages ,then go to tools /general and it will show where all the files you downloaded are stored,not web pages, i personally don't use the term files when referring to web pages
