1st suggestion ,leave it plugged for awhile to make sure the battery has some charge,as most laptops don't like starting with a dead battery !

IT could be any number of things .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

actually no. i changed it at the beginning of this whole process so that the cd/dvd rom would boot first then the hdd. so that had no real effect on the outcome, when it wasnt working that is.

thank you .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i also suggest CCleaner ,to remove all files/programs in temp folders ,and temp internet files .

Sorry to bring out your anger. I didn't have windows xp on my computer, my friend did.
The last person just said to right click on the desktop, but went no further.
You on the other hand gave better instructions, after the problem had already been fixed...for free.
So thanks even though your a week to late. Try harder next time to be on the ball would ya.

I was testing with belarc Advisor a Windows XP PC. It shows for 25 updates that it cannot verify the update and needs to bee reinstalled.
May it be that those updates are false (not by Microsoft)?

you should go to windows update side and scan for updates

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

>>>>belarc Advisor <<<< what type of program is this.
were the windows updates from the windows update site.

i use it ,pc audit program ,do a google search for it bobbyraw, very neat tool,it will create a profile of you computer ,safe program I've been using it for years now .

right click on mycomputer /go properties/advanced /startup and recovery/ settings / and on check auto restart ,,this then should give you a BSOD error message ,copy down the stop error message code #'s and post them back here .it will look something like this .
"Stop 0x0000000a(0x00000029,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x80466d7b" error message after Windows is already installed

i have 2 different ones,a pci/isa one about 5yrs old now .and the pro looking one ,bought it on e-bay for about 30.00$ for laptop and pc .it seems to work ok,the manual with codes is a poor translation to English though

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

it didnt work on a new hard drive. i tried it and Windows managed to setup from the CD but when it restarts, loops back again on a reboot.

thats weird ,as most restarts are usually a driver conflict ,can you go into safe mode ,hitting f8 on startup,if yes when you get there right click on my computer/go properties/advanced /startup and recovery /settings and on check auto restart ,this will then show a BSOD error ,if you do get one write down the erroy code numbers and post them here .
also bad ram could cause this

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i suggest ,you delete the folders in program file ,then download ccleaner to clean registry ,and try reinstall then .

use nlite (i think vlite is the vista version?) to slipstream the chipset drivers (sata controller) into a new OS image.

I did that to get XP to work with my SCSI RAID. before i needed to hit F(6?) and use floppies

i think you missed the point on that one, poster said he cant get it to boot from the dvd drive !!! there for cant get it to boot to the Vista dvd disk .not a Sata driver problem yet!!!

possible that the outage fried the hard drive ,did you have it plugged into a good power serge bar,or direct to wall outlet .it will need more looking at than i can offer online ,you will need to open the case and maybe remove ribbon cables and power cables from the drive and motherboard and then re-plug them back in to the drive and board .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

the battery most likely is not on the board itself , but plugged in via a small white 3 wire plug [like a small fan plug],the laptops i have the bios batters is rapped in yellow/red plastic and are attached to the underside of the palm rest area,or the bottom of the case in the same front area ,or i have seen them in the main battery storage area, but are almost all inside the case but not on the board like a regular computer ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

it doesn't boot up because of driver /chipset differences of the new and old motherboard ,you most likely need to reinstall windows because of the new motherboard .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

After a few days of searching, I still can't find the disk for Windows XP that came with my computer. However, I did find the one that came with the old Dell. Can I use that?

yes ,but it will have limits, as it will be a recovery cd or sorts .you should be able to use it to run a repair ,but no be able to do a repair install of xp over itself

if possible remove and add in cards like nic and modem and sound cards ,if you have all on board devices go to bios and disable them until after you install windows .also if you have on board video and are using a add in video card take it out also ,and use the on board video .

NB should be followed by : meaning note well and doing a regedit to change the program location will be time consuming and you would have to move the entire directory the program is installed in to match the registry.

my reference is to when you do a xp clean/new install and before you load any new programs .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

hitting f8 key on bootup to get to safe mode

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

all my programs are being installed to D:\ right now. There are a lot of remnants of media player, netmeeting and outlook express in folders on C though.

Do you think I should repartition stuff before I reinstall the rest of my stuff?

not a 100% sure what is meant by remnants of,but if you are not using them then you should be able to uninstall the programs in add and remove program

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

NB programs are not automatically installed to another drive UNLESS you point it there. [Unless you Have the operating system drive as D:]

not sure what you mean by NB program but it is possible to put the program files folder on D:\ and do a regedit to change its destination ,but the system files \dll files that are instilled by a programed will still be install in system32 folder on c:\
