Most large chains have an agreement with MS to only stock Vista now. However I know that most small independants are still stocking it or you could always try eBuyer?

Hope this helps,

Kenneth,

Firstly thank you for your post & Welcome to Daniweb!

If you've tried a reset via the button as per instructions, tried turning it off for 30secs or more then restarting and tried a hard reset via the config page then it's probably fautly.

The retailer that you purchased it from should honour your warrantly; which for Netgear I believe is usually 1yr from the original date of purchase.

Regards,

Ok I just fixed the problem, for me anyway.

(with Laptop Off and Battery installed)

I held the (power button down for 20 seconds)

I let go and it booted up, the screen turned on, no restarts.

Hope this helps.

That's similar to a ATX reset, but for that you would take out all power sources (cable, battery etc) then hold the power button for 30 seconds.

This should solve the majority of power problems.

Hello!

If you're thinking of buying a copy of Ms Vista (especially Home Premium) then you should open the pack and check the disk while with the staff member that served you if possible.

As there have been quite a few recent instances of them containing Home Basic, Ms are aware of the problem but haven't yet come up with a solution.

Most retailers won't yet have a process in place for dealing with this so it's best to check it while still in the store.

Hello!

Have a slight issue with vista, whenever I attempt to open iTunes or office.
I get a pop up box with an error message. Started yesterday - haven't installed or removed anything. Run a full virus scan. Tried restoring to a few days before when it was working.
Also try uninstalling but get a similar message.

Any ideas would be a great help!

Good Evening and welcome to Daniweb!

Have you tried an ATX reset by any chance? As that will usually solve most power related issues.

Are you able to get the menu up on the monitor?

For a while Vista was unable to properly read 4Gb RAM, but this should have been fixed in recent updates though?

To my knowledge systems prefer even numbers when it comes to RAM rather than odd ones, I.e 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 etc. So not sure if you'll get the most out of 3Gb.

Evening,

I believe the limit is set at 5Gb, most ISP's class a download as any data you receive.

So without surfing you're looking at around 5 films. Or a couple of thousand MP3's.

Be wary as most ISP's will charge you through the nose if you go over - some have been known to be as much as £1.70 per Mb above the limit.

Also be wary of 'Unlimited' broadband - just about all UK ISP's cap their 'Unlimited' broadband; usually at around 20Gb and may charge you for going over. Check and double check the small print if you're not sure of your agreement.

Hope this helps,

Good afternoon and welcome to Daniweb!

Does your monitor support RGB or Composit? As this will often cause the display device to turn a primary colours if the source isn't RGB.

Would usually boot ok, just won't remember anything. Data & Time for example.

Most Motherboards, have a CMOS battery that you can replace. I recently rebuilt a Laititude D600 and was nice and easy - good access to everything etc.

Good afternoon and welcome to Daniweb!

I had this with a customers unit a while back, and a similar model. Have you tried a different hard disk?

As that would explain the rebooting; as windows will reboot if it is unable to find a location to boot from i.e a HDD. And in most cases will eventually give up.

What exactly do you get when you turn it on? Do you get the Toshiba screen at boot up?

Sounds like you're trying to convert a Real Audio file into MP3?

Check the settings on your router. Try changing them to channel 6 and G only as opposed to G & B. Sounds daft but the PSP had similar issues and that's what generally solved them.

I'll have to agree with Bobbyraw, besides unless you run something like SeaTools on the drives you'll have no idea how much use it has had etc.

You're better of just getting a new drive matey, and leave referbs alone. You should try to avoid them like the plague, you've little idea of the history - was the previous owner careful and looked after it or were they a spotty 12 year old who had it in bits every other day?

I wouldn't go upgrading the processor on a laptop - it's just not worth it. Look on eBuyer - you'll find plenty of bargins on there.

You can get automatic and remote control versions of these. RGB / Component is also be widely used now and will still give you the same quality picture as you've got.

There are three main levels of HD; 720p, 1080i, 1080P. Then 100Hz - imagine what you're watching as 35mm film; anything fast moving it slows down and inserts frames so that it appears to be smoother. - clever eh!

A HD source is needed really to get the best from any HD setup; Sky HD, VirginMedia etc, or a BluRay player or a PS3. Stay well clear of HD DVD though.

If you ever get bored, Mircosoft had some IMAX HD video clips - quite impressive actually, you could always link your pc (idealy via DVI or HDMI) and play them through your TV.

One last thing; be wary of screen burn! It can take from around 24hrs of the same still image on a LCD and only 12hrs of the same still image on a Plasma.

Plasma Tv's are not like car aircons - you don't need to get them refilled every so often! However they do weigh a lot more; partly due to the glass front where as LCD generally use plastic.

Try to use quality cables; as in most cheap ones not all the pins are connected!

Welcome to Daniweb!

As HoustonIT said, you should try and leave Bluetooth alone unless you have a specific reason for wanting to use it.

If you wanted to go Bluetooth (I believe it's called a PAN although not sure about that), you'll need a pc linked to a router with a Bluetooth adaptor - class 1 idealy, then an adaptor in each pc you need to add. Then set up a network between them. Bare in mind Bluetooth networks aren't as stable as those based on Wi-Fi.

The Wi-Fi option: Depending on the location or property, chose either G, G+, MIMO, or Pre-N. (I known there are some variants but these are the main four). You ideally need a router and adaptor of the same standard (i.e 54G) and brand as this makes set up far easier.

WEP or WPA would also be advised however it's up to you.

Hope this helps,

Dazza

Good evening and welcome to Daniweb!

Can you hear the HDD spinning? As Windows will keep rebooting if it is unable to detect a HDD.

Can access the BIOs still?

Good evening and welcome to Daniweb!

Are you using Vodafone software for the 3G data card? As this could well be the root of your problem, especially as most of the software with these cards allows you to configure your usuage so as not to congest the network and cost you to much.

Evening Sarah,

Are you only getting these problems on Internet Explorer?

Dazza

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

This is a known issue; I have an e-mail from a supplier that I think lists the cause and solution to this on my desk at work - will post it tomorrow for you if I remember to bring it back.

What's the make and model sorry?

Dazza

UrbanKhoja 89 Practically a Posting Shark Featured Poster

Hi Josh and welcome to Daniweb!

Firstly I would try and remove the virus by using an anti-virus, if you don't already have one you could try Avast! or AVG by Grisoft (both have free versions). But make sure you update them before scanning.

However if you still decide that you wish to restore it; then you'll need to make sure you've got all work / data backed up first. Then restart and press either F8 or F11 (depends on make & model) at boot-up.

Depending on your laptop you'll see either 'windows is loading files' then the Windows Recovery Enviroment, or a list of options and 'Repair your computer' should be near the top - select that - then depending on make and model it'll either be 'destructive recovery' (usually packard bell) or 're-install windows'.

Providing you follow the on screen prompts it's very hard to go wrong; feel free to post with any problems though.

Hope this helps,

You will be able to get their IP address in email only if they are not using email client such as Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail. The email has to be from their ISP(internet service provider)i.e. SBCglobal, ATT, Cox, RoadRunner, etc. The IP address seen in email headers is that of the Hotmail or Yahoo etc...

Also, possibly if you use a Private Messaging client like Yahoo Messenger, WindowsLive Messenger, AOL Messenger; by opening a window to chat privately, and in the command prompt window type: Netstat -an, you may capture the IP address of the person who you're chatting with.

But having said that, why would anyone be obsessessed to want to find out someone's IP address because a person is being rude or obnoxious? (Im laughing too hard here). Hello, it's the internet!

And having said that,,, The girl at the dry cleaners counter and the Starbucks waitress is rude and obnoxious everytime I see them! Get over it. Who cares...?

That will usually just bring up the Messenger server you're connected to - not who you're actually talking to. Still not sure why anyone would want to find out though lol.

Apple came out with a new 32GB i-touch...shouldn't I just wait for the 60GB?...I'm pretty sure they'll do that...Good thing I didn't buy anything yet...i'll wait and see what apple does...the 32GB itouch is about 500USD.

Good idea but you'll be paying heaps for it. I have a 16GB touch - but bought it just as they came out; kind of wishing I had known about the 32GB and I would have waited lol.

Hello!

Bit of a strange one, the two laptops can connect to the router fine, but the Xp desktop won't. All running from wireless. The desktop can detect other networks just not this one? But the router is working fine and in range as the two laptops are picking it up.

Tried re-installing the wireless adaptor, as well as going back to an earlier restore point when it was working but still nothing. It's mainly annoying as we use the desktop as a print server for everything else.

Running a Belkin54G wireless router, Belkin 54G adaptor in the desktop. And BT Voyager with VOIP.

It's proberbly something really simple that I've missed!

Thanks guys,

Evening Chris,

Haven't heard of this one before. Please forgive me if I'm wrong but my belief was that Firewire was originally designed to be the next generation of USB before USB 2.0 was released with better data rates.

Firewire is typically used to transfer media from camera's and camcorder's etc.

Couldn't find any trace or reports of this on the net either.

and what does yahoo.co.uk means ??? ho i can make it ???

Depending on your location there may be different addresses (.fr / .ie for example), but it looks as if you're trying to make a new e-mail address.

You have several options, obviously yahoo or gmail as well as hotmail.

yahoo.co.uk is just the UK version of yahoo.com. I would suggest using the one for the country you're currently in.

Linksys are actually a pretty good brand - partly as they're the domestic division of Cisco. The Linksys router do provide you with sufficent tools to minimise these sort of attacks however you'll never to 110% secure - sadly that's just the world we live in.

As DimaYasny said above; you should try to use WPA instead of WEP - most people with basic knowledge and a packet sniffer can crack WEP.

MAC addressing can be useful as well; but it shouldn't be relied upon as security. As with WEP, MAC addressing is fairly easy to get round but when used with WPA can offer an extra layer of defence from wireless attacks.

Most router have a function called 'DHCP client list' - this will display all devices connected to your router and thier details, usually MAC address and IP address on the router.

Hope this helps,
