jingda i'm sorry to tell you, i've been doing some recovery work for big instances and i do have 'some' experience with data-requisition and perma-removal. I must've misunderstood the initial post. I thought saj_amo wanted to clean a whole disk. I understand the negative vote you gave me but please don't state things on people you don't know.

If you are using version 10.6.6 or 10.6.7 and running snow leopard. There is no need to degraf your hard drive but if you want you can also do so. It won't harm your mac. Why do you want to improve your mac performance. Is it in terms of speed if that is the cae you can just use a cleaning software to clean up unwanted file or upgrade your ram.

Using phone and start posting in daniweb is a bit of trouble. AS you can see the phone screen is small and makes it hard to tap on the screen and in this post i spell phonr instead of phone.

You can just secure erase it. So that the file will be delete securely and no trace will be remain on your hard drive. Nobody use reformat to delete only a file. Like what gerbil and bal had said, they are a better option then reformating your disk.

Vista failed because it is not a bad product but the main reason is because of its features require a PC configurations beyond the current common ground. Are you having problem, like when you download a file from the internet or anywhere. And when you click on the file, they show you random numbers and letter you cannot understand. Then at the top it said cannot open in DOS mode. If that is the case, that is very common. I have also the same kind as problem with you and have try various methods but it did not work.

1) Make sure the file is zip file or other format but not exe. exe files are for windows and cannot open using mac. So when you open exe. files on mac, the file will show you a lot of random stuff like numbers and letters you cannot understand.
2) Try opening other zip files download from the internet and see whether you can open and view them without any problems if yes then the file you download that say cannot view in dos mode has a problem. It would be best to delete them.
3) Do a virus scan and check whether any files are corrupted. Use iantivurs. It is good and free. Download it and do a full scan.

Post back what you have seen when you follow my instructions. Basically there are no DOS mode on mac, so your problem is weird. Almost every mac users have the same problem around the world so you do not need to worry. And it won't harm your macbook at all also.

What you did is correct something is wrong with your preview app. Preview is use to open jpeg files and others, so maybe when you are trying to open a file with preview the file may be corrupted thus damaging the preview app.

1) Do a virus scan. Try using iantivirus download from the internet and do a full scan ( Iantivirus have many types, use the free version and do a full scan.)
2) Second, instead of clicking preview, try to right click it. You will see two options, click on open and see whether it works.
3) Go to any jpeg file and try opening them with preview again. This time when you go to the file, right click them. Click on open with and select preview.

You can also use preview to open any other pdf files, try opening pdf files then.
