It has been a work in progress among the moderators for about a month now. It just went live yesterday, with some ammendments today, so I want to wait until it's settled and agreed upon behind the scenes before encouraging everyone to read them.

Thanks :)

Sooo ... to sum up what this article said, PHP Developer Tools is an extension of Eclipse, and Zend Studio is an extension of PDT. Major diferences are that Zend Studio supports refactoring while Eclipse doesn't, and has better debugging.

Hey guys,

Who's been following the Apple Event today? It's being live-blogged on Engadget

FINALLY wireless printing for the iPad, which is practically the only reason I got the iPad in the first place lol. Really been waiting on that one especially.

Plus confused about multi-touch on the new super-small iPod Nano devices. It's hard enough to do multitouch on the iPod Touch/iPhone b/c the screen is so small and it's cramped. How could you do multitouch on something so much smaller??

> I get on average 6 mails a day from previous posts or the newsletter/geeks lounge etc, and it is still not getting on my nerves at all, as long as we are having fun.
But you also have 600+ posts. The average member with 15 posts might find one email a month a turn off.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What are the differences between Zend PHP Studio and Eclipse for PHP Developers? Why pay for Zend Studio when Eclipse is free?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We already send out email to new members a week after they joined with links to threads they posted in. (In an attempt to help new members who post on the site one day, and then forget the URL or how to find their post.) I guess we can include a sentence about how we encourage marking threads as solved.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The problem with doing that is that there's no way of knowing whether they started a Q&A thread or an ongoing discussion, or whether any of the responses they got really were valuable.

It would actually be a super big turn off for a newbie to start a thread in the C++ forum. Then get a response saying "use code tags correctly!" ... and then a week later they get an email saying "If your thread is solved, mark it solved!" Plus nearly every thread in the Internet Marketing category is not Q&A.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Put larger text indicating to mark threads as solved, so hopefully more people will take advantage. Also, did similar with threads more than 3 months old.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

And all of these methods are free, too, so there's no reason not to do any of them. Thanks for the tips!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are you asking how long after you have an additional backlink does Bing recognize it? I would assume that has to do with the popularity and rank of the site linking to you.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Both are free. Why choose? The more you do the better. It definitely takes a well-rounded SEO campaign tackled from as many angles as you can.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yeah, this is the same issue that caused all posts to not show up a couple months back! That's how I knew what the problem was so quickly.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

the words "page 3" are wrapped in a <span> tag with class "ad_text". Your ad blocker is blocking everything with class ad_text even if it is not an ad.

My robots.txt file looks like this:

It sits in the root directory. I think that Allow is explicit.

I assume they don't want to emphasize the fact that they don't have the technology to do it themselves.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It means that if you want to rank for the keyword "blue and white shoes" then don't force every single site that links to you through your marketing efforts to use the anchor text "blue and white shoes". That looks really unnatural and obvious that you are behind placing those links there.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I guess what I'm getting at is ... what would be the best way to put our staff writers to best use for the benefit of the community?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think I'm confused what you're trying to accomplish. Manual submission??

I think what you're trying to do is build backlinks ... incoming links from other sites to your website to increase natural listings in the search engines. A couple of links from a forum aren't going to do anything. You need HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of links from blogs, forums, news sites, etc etc etc. The content needs to be so good that people are going to naturally want to link to it from their own websites ... and tell others who tell others, hence the whole viral marketing concept.

Another technique is to find a forum that is related to the website's niche, and participate in the community. A lot. Link to the site in your signature, not in the actual posts. Over time, with lots of really great posts, you'll start to develop a reputation for yourself within the niche. And people will naturally want to see what your site is all about because they'll see that you really know your stuff with regards to the particular topic.

What about tutorials such as http://www.daniweb.com/tutorials/tutorial299557.html

Along the lines of the types of articles any of you might be inclined to read?

What about news stories such as http://www.daniweb.com/news/story307226.html ??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The listing of items? Huh?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ezzaral: Try disabling Adblock Plus? It's one of those ...

WaltP: The look that I am going for is along the lines of digg.com or stackoverflow.com, putting thread titles front and center because that is what the call-to-action for 99% of our website traffic is going to be. The millions of visitors who browse DaniWeb are going to find usernames and forum titles meaningless because they are not yet acquainted with DaniWeb's structure or our community.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Gah, the Chrome ad blocker strikes again.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Why not? Be blunt. We want to know what we need to do to change. If the answer is because there are a million other news sites out there, tell us what you want to read about that can't be found elsewhere.

You're welcome :)

Oh ... and please use the 'Contribute Hot News Tips' forum (http://www.daniweb.com/forums/forum183.html) to make any suggestions on what we should write about. Feel free to post in there any news tips you stumble across, suggestions for interviews, suggestions for stories to cover, news angles, ... anything you want our staff writers to write about.

That forum actually serves as a ticket system for our team of staff writers on what they should write about. So anytime you want one of our staff writers to write about something, post in there what it is, and we'll do our best to get someone right on it!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm going to reiterate what Eyal said. Essentially, we want to bring the News into the community fold. The same way that you come here for both Q&A threads, discussions, and code snippets, we want News to be an equal part of the overall DaniWeb community experience.

To that end, we want you to help us use the staff writers and resources we have at our disposal to make news and product reviews a community project.

We polled you awhile back asking what you wanted us to ask Bjorne Stroustrup, and we put a staff writer on it, and the interview is almost ready to go live.

We'll also have a presence at the upcoming Intel Developers Forum conference in California, where we'll be interviewing various Intel insiders and attending the launch for the new version of Intel Parallel Studio.

Let us know if you have any projects for us. Anything specific you want us to ask or attend on your behalf? We are here to work for you ... the community is our heart and soul.

We pledge to keep you -- the community -- involved and aware of everything we're doing on our end ... but in exchange we need feedback from you as far as what you think we're doing wrong, where we can improve, what types of things you want to see and read about that we're not currently covering, and what we can do to bring you the types of …

Check if this happened after a windows update. Some settings are changed at times after an update.

For the most part, whenever my computer reboots it applies Windows Updates it had previously downloaded. And everytime it reboots, I lose my homepage.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

ursimrankhanna, you have it backwards.

SEO = Search Engine Optimization techniques such as on-page optimization (meta tags, keyword density, etc) and off-page optimization (getting backlinks)
PPC = Pay Per Click is purchasing clicks from Google AdWords or other search engines
SEM = Search Engine Marketing is a broad term to describe everything you can do to get traffic from the search engines. It includes SEO and PPC.

I think a majority of them are interesting but I like the futurist type things (I guess I am an "overall geek" as Nick put it). I'm not as captivated by things about social media.

Just click the 'News' tab from any of the forums you're interested in.

ROI is your return on investment. It's how much profit you made from doing a particular type of advertising. For example, if you spent $100 on a Google AdWords campaign and it directly resulted in $500 worth of sales, you had a positive ROI of $400. However, if you spent $100 on an ad campaign and got no sales from it, there was a negative ROI and you may need to reevaluate whether that type of campaign is working well for you.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

SEM is a broader term that describes doing both SEO and PPC

Yes ... but it does take a lot of time and hard work and dedication. I started this website with no money out of pocket, and now it has turned into my fulltime business.

There are many different ways to make money online. eCommerce. Blogging. etc. If you want to get into blogging, choose a topic that you are very passionate about it and write about it!

Anywhere from $0/month up to $10,000/month. Average of $2K-3K a month. Whenever I make adjustments, I keep track HOURLY for about a week or so. Then, I keep track daily. No software ... just Google Analytics integration.

Are all of these decdent at Indian traffic?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Funnily enough, I used to be aboard the bandwagon that Google sitemaps were useless. I had a sitemap since the protocol's inception, and then got rid of it, and noticed absolutely no increase/decrease/change of any kind either before or after.

Just today I decided to give it another shot, after not having a sitemap for nearly two years, so I'll keep everyone up to date on whether I notice a difference.

Well even if it's a vBulletin issue, there maybe a workaround or a fix. It's all open source. I will investigate.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm ... So you can't find news anymore, eh? It is on the homepage and also the 'Editorial' button in the top navigation menu. Also, when you are in any top-level category, there is a News tab. Thank you for the feedback :)
