Should be fixed.

I'll see what I can come up with.

I meant for either the Database Design or Legacy and Other Languages forums to be a bit of a catch-all. How often are there new threads related to these other SQLs?

Do you read the DaniWeb news stories? If not ... what about them doesn't interest you?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

> I'm just judging by the number of thread hijacks.
Well if that's the case, it has NOTHING to do with how big or small the button is or where it is located on the page. People do a google search, come into an individual forum thread, and reply to it without ever even getting to the forum listing page. I guess it's a matter of putting a new thread button somewhere near the quick reply box.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Perfecto!

I'm not sure what CB hoplinks are?? However, the more links from the widest variety of places the better ... as long as the links aren't from bad neighborhoods. If you were banned from Google, you can usually go into Google Webmaster Tools and submit a reinclusion request.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This is really funny.

> "Edit/Delete" button: Complete misnomer, because it does not offer the ability to delete.
Should be fixed, but I am still seeing Delete b/c I'm an admin. Can someone else confirm?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I don't think it's a matter of a greater percentage of people screwing up as much as it is just more posts being made in general. However, I can definitely understand the frustration.

I went ahead and made it so that members must have either a reputation of at least 15(meaning they received at least one positive rep from a non-newbie) *OR* they have at least 5 posts and have also been a member for at least 5 days before they can contribute code snippets. This is also the threshold to tag threads with never-before-used tags (as opposed to ones already in the system).

Hi,

It looks as if the reason only moderators currently have access was because the announcement was set to expire last month. vBulletin requires that an end-date be set for all announcements. Because this one was created back in 2004, at the time the year 2010 seemed so distantly far into the future.

I will go ahead and fix.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Not sure what you mean? Can you give an example??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I was just about to let this thread die again when I thought about all the memories it brought back! This was before DANIWEB even existed, when I was just playing around with a forum I put up to chat with a couple of friends called tech talk forums (which eventually got merged into DaniWeb)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

> "Edit/Delete" button: Complete misnomer, because it does not offer the ability to delete.
Well it does Delete, but only for moderators. So I will edit it so that the Delete part only shows up for mods. I keep forgetting to do this!

> No

button on either of the post editors. Will work on that too :)

> Page navigation on multi-page threads and forums is still only at the bottom That is currently by design, but I will see if I can do something about it while still achieving all of my design goals.

> The "Start A New Thread" button at the top of the forums is barely distinguishable from a line of text and does not readily present itself in the forum listing. There is an enormous button at the bottom, and a smaller button was added to the top to appease people who wanted access without having to scroll. There has been absolutely no decrease in the number of new threads being created on a daily/weekly basis that would indicate that the 'new thread' button is now harder to find than it was in the old design.

> Font/table size on the forum thread listings is still huge. Large, but not huge ;) This is by design and I currently don't have any plans on changing this one. Sorry!![icode]
button on either of the post editors.
Will work on that too :)

> Page navigation on multi-page threads …

Mark thread as being a waste of time is essentially what down voting the first post in a thread does. Then, when skimming the list of threads, just don't go into any of them that are indicating down votes.

Hi,

I have remained silent in this thread up until now, as whenever issues of this type are emailed to me, I reply back stating our policy. However, I wanted to allow other members of our community to respond back without you feeling as if they were coached by me or simply following my lead.

I wish you the best of luck.

Cheers,
Dani

Hmm ... Really? Please definite "lately" ... Last week? Last month? Last couple of months?? If there is a problem with our mail server, it would help to debug the issue if we had a rough timeline of how long the problem has been occurring. This way we can sync it up to something we may have changed at around the time time.

... And yes, I believe that Apple thinking they have a right to do this to any jailbroken phone is a direct jab at the recent jailbreaking is now legal ruling.

> However, the most applicable means of identifying the thief will be the integrated use of the iPhone camera into the security measures. A password prompt will be sent to the device once it has been deemed unauthorized, which after a certain number of failed attempts, snaps a flashless, noiseless photo of the unassuming perpetrator.

So basically Apple is saying that they currently have the technology, and want to file a patent, to take and transmit photos of me using my phone whenever they want, entirely unbenounced to me? What if I run out of the shower to take an important call, and I have no idea that Apple is secretely taking pictures of me?? How do I know that Apple hasn't been doing this already, and is just now patenting their technology after the fact?

I am using Windows Small Business Server 2003 to manage my network. I keep my Internet Explorer homepage set to http://www.daniweb.com. However, whenever I log out of my Windows account (not very often at all), whenever I log back in it resets my IE homepage to http://companyweb/ (SharePoint). Anyone know why it is doing this?

Never heard of them. What are their CPMs like?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I don't think that there is a set number. It depends on so many factors, such as the length of the page and how many internal links you have on the page. Eight links to various references scattered within a long article are better than four links in a page footer that are obviously there just for SEO benefit.

> Also, in my opinion, if you are using a third party template, out of respect for the template creator, credits to the developer should not be removed.
I agree. However, I also look at it from an SEO perspective, and factor in whether they simply want credit or want a link or multiple footer links. If it is something I don't feel comfortable doing, then weigh that into the decision of whether or not you wish to use the template. You might feel more comfortable using a template that doesn't have such requirements.

If you want to show different content to different people depending on where they are located, here is what you need to do:

Create multiple websites, www.hotel.com, www.hotel.fr, www.hotel.in, etc ... Put the content you want that country to see on each individual website.

Then, create an account with Google Webmaster Tools. There, you can specify the target country for each domain.

When I was first getting DaniWeb off the ground, I was into the whole link building game like CRAZY! This thread just reminded me how far out of the loop I have been with regards to the latest link building techniques.

I posted to various forums using a link to DaniWeb in my signature. Not spamming, of course! I also regularly googled various keywords I wanted to rank for, and tried to make deals with all of the sites that came up in top positions.

Social media didn't exist even a couple of years ago like it does today. So I didn't really have the benefit of using Twitter or Facebook to my advantage.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I forgot to suggest submitting an email with Google Webmaster Tools, asking them if you were blacklisted or banned for any reason.

As canadafred specified, they are both two different black hat SEO techniques designed to drive traffic from the search engines.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You would want to alter the links to have the "nofollow" attribute. So that the link html code looks like: <a href="http://www.site.com" rel="nofollow">Link Text</a>

However, even the nofollow attribute has been proven to pass link juice. If you want Google to pretend the sponsor links don't exist, remove them. If you feel that you should not do that because it is a condition of using the Wordpress theme, then either use a different Wordpress theme or live with the fact that Google *will* spider the sponsors and consider your site as linking to them.

Hi,

I attended a Google AdSense seminar last week where one of the tips they gave was to frequently check the Allow & Block ads tab to be able to see a selection of all the creatives that have appeared on my site.

However, when I click to go to the Ad Review Center, it just says: Ad Review Center is currently not available for any properties on this account.

Anyone know why this is?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Me? Or any moderator with the ability to delete posts or ban a user?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm pretty well acquainted with most of Google's offerings, but unfortunately I don't think they do. Google Buzz is the only thing that comes to mind, but it's not really a bookmarking service.

Joseph: HUH???? I have no clue what you just said.

Do just what qlipboard said. Get links from a lot of various mid-level trafficked websites within your niche. I say mid-level because you don't want only pages that all have PR0 and no traffic themselves, but you also want to keep it affordable without paying $5,000 a link to be on the homepage of cnn.com

Create a Facebook group and post to it ... everything you think that your website visitors would want to see. Post behind-the-scenes information about how you run your website. Photos. Videos. Engage with your audience!! Ask for website feedback and suggestions.

Heavily promote your Facebook group on your website as a place to engage with your website visitors. Check out the Facebook widgets (snippets of HTML code you can embed within your website to promote your Facebook page) similar to the way we do on the DaniWeb homepage.
