Re: Actually AJelliot, if you are more a of graphic design person, and you have dreamweaver, that in combination with fireworks or imageready will do. I reccommend fireworks (this mini-tutorial will work for fireworks, image ready, and photoshop). After you create a design, slice it with the slice tool in a …
Re: There are lots of places like linksmanager.com that can help you with this. Do a google search and you'll find a ton of results.
The Web Designer Versus the Web Developer: Who is Right? by Chris Hooley of MCP Media, Inc. For some reason, they have the same goals, but can't seem to agree on the right way to achieve them. Your designer swears that you need a super slick interface with all …
I am looking on hotscripts for content management systems, and there are just so many. Many of them are bloated with junk I don't need (but may have use for soemtime down the road if I start building all my sites with this engine). Some are too stipped too - …
Hi All, this is killing me and I was wondering if anybody knew how to fix this. What I need to do is mod_rewite URLs to mimich directories for variables. Easy, but what I need is to be able to handle the absence of some pseudo directories in the URL …

A lot of web developers are strongly opinionated that divs should be used for design and tables for tabular data, but I am still not entirely convinced that website designers should jump on it yet. I haved designed web sites using both, and in my experience I have found that …
We run a .Net environment, and we are adding a blog to our site. We would like to keep it consistent (keep it in .Net) and we would like to get the most bang for our buck (or free if it exists lol). Any suggestions?
Re: If you are developing a serious community, I highly recommend VB. If you are developing a community and can't afford the price tag, phpbb is ok.
Re: lol @ SEO Guy's sig. I only show around 200 backlinks and I have a 7. I must have a few high PR links in there or something.
Re: Don't do that. Put the flat file above the web root. I'm not sure of your hosting environment, but most linux set ups allow you to access files above the web root with your scripts. If there is no way to do that in your situation, then yes, block them …
Re: the Alexa toolbar is only good to use a a very general gage to see how your site is doing. I would put as much weight on the Alexa rankings as I do in gogle's PR (BTW, I put little weight on PR, probably a lot less than most link …
Re: I use constant contact, and they are about as good as it gets. You might want to check out road runner too, but I'm pretty sure constant contact is the tops for email campaigns. I have also used a program called OEM Pro which is awesome. You can buy this …

Re: Experience is key. For example, two of my cousins, around the same age, are both big geeks. Really smart dudes. They both started college the same year, one went to Devry, the other went to Arizona State. The one who went to Arizona State dropped out after his first semester, …
Re: You also may want to check your MAX_FILE_UPLOAD size in your php.ini file.

Flash, an interactive, multimedia format, was introduced to web design only a few years ago. It was heralded as an absolute breakthrough in Internet technology. Web designers were soon rushing to add Flash to website after website. Unfortunately, Flash, while sometimes quite useful, proved sometimes to be more of a …
I can only connect to the web via IE or Outlook right now, and IE can't connect to SSL sites. Seems like a firewall issue, but even when I have my firewalls and anti virus turned off- no dice. This is really confusing me. Any ideas where to start looking …

Why Use XHTML on Your Web Site? by Chris Hooley of MCP Media, Inc. As web site owners, we all want the same thing. We all want a great design. We all want to make money. We all want our site to reach as many people as possible. But how …
Re:
Well paladine, I can tell you right now css is not easier :) (in my opinion) but, it is much more compatible across browsers and platforms.
Slade, for more graphical designs this is usually not the case. I am a fan of table-less design, the code is so flexible …
Re: I find CIS guys often work on systems; business systems, systems analysis etc. Comp Sci people usually end up computer engineers. I wouldn't say one holds more weight than the other. It just depends on what your goals are. I am a CIS guy and I don't really have my …
Re: hahaha - FREE LINK!!! I just get a vision of crazed internet nerds running to the nearest keyboard. Kinda like when malmart had a 25 dollar DVD player this year... lots of ladies in moomoos kncking eachother over in a frenzy to get the units.
Re: MX 2004 is a muhc better app for a lot of reasons. Stick with that, learn that, and you will be ahppy you did. I never used templates because I always used includes for portions of the site I want to be able to alter site wide. Try this ep, …
Re: I actually prefer the look of the design without the spacing, but in this case I think the gain from the usability is greater than the loss of design, since it still looks fine with the spacing. just my 2 :)
Re: Google can determine if sites are relevant to each other using the same algorythms it uses to find if phrases are searched on. Michele, you are fine linking to another site if it makes sense, related or not, but be careful not to link out too much to unrelated sites. …

Re: The backlinks shown seem more accurate than before. The command www.domain.com -site:www.domain.com used to return a more true count of people linking to your page (usually double or triple the link: command) but now they seem very close in numbers.
I just decided to put a sub domain on my directory, but the .htaccess rules I wrote don't apply for the subdomain. Here are the code snippets, can anybody see what I am doing wrong here? Re: From a usability standpoint, underlined links are better. From a design standpoint, that's not always the case. I personally liked my design on my site better with the links *not* underlined, but to aid my users (I get a lot of mom and pop non computer types who need websites) …
Re: It is not good for search engines. A 301 redirect is the lesser of all evils, but you can't do that on homestead. You are best off putting a page up that informs the users you moved and has a link to your new site.
Re: When designing fixed width, try to design for 744. IE on a mac is the smallest screen I design for.
Re: Look for the "Visual Quick Start to PHP" for the easiest quick start. I found it extremely simple to catch on using that book. You will probably grow out of it quickly, but it will give you the basics you need to get cracking quickly and easily where other books …

Re: Yes it does. From what I hear it prefers if the javascript has the actual URL that it wil be landing on
window.location("http://www.mcpmedia.com");
and it doesn't read it if it is inside a select box. It really much prefers a good text link to anything else tho. http://www.highrankings.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6735&hl=javascript+link

Re: The google search inside a site is very expensive when you use the google search appliance (like macromedia does). Writing your own search is tedious because you have to wrtie search algorhythms. Your best bet is to go to hotscripts and mod a free one (like I did). |
