Do you see anything in regards to Novell? When you right click My Computer and go to properties. Please select the "Computer Name" tab and please click change.

Tell me what is selected and what is listed for it's name. You want to make sure WORKGROUP is selected and if it is name it something else please. You might think it's part of the domain when it can just be part of a WORKGROUP.

I'm actually having the same problem with my linksys (WrRT54G v7) router. It's acting as a gateway to 6 computers (4 wired & 2 wirlessly). For some unknown reason it just goes offline but the connection icon says connected. I thought it was a DHCP problem atfirst, so I decided to give all the PCs a static address. Frankly that didn;t improve the problem on a long run.
I have updated the firmware, tried caling linksys no answer (delayed me, will try again). But connection directly to the modem is flawless.
When this also happens, I try to ping the Router(gateway) but I get no responce, then I try to ping other addresses like 'google & yahoo ' and I get responces; others I can think of doesn't give responces aswell; exept those two. It's like it just blocks us off the interent, while the internet is still active. I have tried everything, running out of options.
To clarify things, when I run the MSN messenger troubleshoot, it detects that my gateway is offilne.
Now to fix this; I always had to reset the router(gateway), then it comes up.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you upgrade the firmware?

Point taken. RIS to be honest with you give it thumbs down. Also if we had a bigger staff we would probably figure out why this is happening where one machine at a time or during the RISing wouldn't freeze. But hey I got bigger problems in my life.

CD I deployed works well. How often do you reimage a system espically if that machine only a User uses and not a Admin. Rarely do me image a machine. The key in all of this and most people dont understand. Virus and Spyware, can only be installed if your an Administrator :)

Let me know what you end up doing.

Jimmy

Well, I have that CD that you mentioned. I was thinking in kind of mass production or a more sophisticated word; deploy! My CD works perfectly but imagine, having to load OS on all those machine using 1 CD. I found a system over the weekend called Acronis Imaging System, or something like that. This system has the same principle as Norton Ghost, but it is Windows based or GUI. I was able to create an XP Image with it from a Dell Optiplex GX110 (PIII 500 MHz, 128MB Ram, 6GB HDD) the system makes a rescue or boot CD with their own proprietary software and from there you can restore the image in other machines, with everything you need on them in about 12 minutes. The rare case is that I started playing with …

First I would do a test of RISing one machine at one time. Instead of doing a set. As you can image 500 machines at once I wouldn't recommand doing it in the real world.

My case senrio one machine at a time should always work.

As for the WINNT.SIF file be careful of this file. Make the WinNT.SIF file and save it after you made it to where you want it.

From my experience opening this file and/or moving / copying this file breaks the file.

Make it, save it, to where you want it and leave it alone from that point on.

I have created a CD called the AllState Common Enviornment CD 1.2 ACE 1.2 CD. What this CD is, is Windows XP Pro with SP2 slipstreamed with all the answer file / device drivers for our Dell's. This replaces the RIS server as we didn't have that great as luck as we wished.

Make a bootable Windows XP Pro SP2 CD and drop a WINNT.SIF file into the i386 folder. Once you done so you will have a Bootable Windows XP Pro SP2 CD just like you would RISing, but with a CD. Fail proof you just need a CD Rom. I will write more if you answer with questions.

All the machines that I have are able to boot from PXE. I have the RIS installed in my server and I have tried it, but somehow it changes the …

It should only run out if you have as many machines as you do DHCP Addresess.

Typically when a machine gives out an address to a machine it typically keeps that address on the machine. Even if it didn't you should have enough.

If you have 10 machines in your network and you have 50 DHCP addresses you should not run out. Upgrade your firmware seriously.

Sometimes the eaisest solution in these types of cases is just buying new equipnment.

Jimmy

my linksys does this

its because it runs out of IP adresses to allocate by DHCP as everytime a client reboots it gives it the next available one

e.g

client 1 (192.168.1.1) reboots
client 1 now given (192.168.1.2)
client 2 powers on given (192.168.1.3)

etc..

after about 50 (there is a thing called "DHCP adress range" somehwere in your router setup) it will run out ip adresses to allocate

I have a D-Link D1-524 router. I've had it for under a year and as of about a week/week and a half ago, at random times, it just shuts off. After I give it the five minute reboot, it works. I don't understand what's causing this but it's very tiresome. Does anybody know what to do? Thanks a lot

It shuts off as in powerwise? Or your internet just get's dropped?

If your internet just drops upgrade your firmware on the router. If that doesn't work I would highly recommand getting a brand new linksys wireless G router for approx $50.

I would setup a Windows 2003 Server. Enable RIS and make sure your soon to be Windows XP Pro clients motherboard / Nic support PXE. If so enable Network / Nic as your first boot device as your network card on the mobo and/or in the PCI slot support PXE then you can do unattend install of Windows XP Pro on 1-300 machines at one time. Just my two cents questions? Concerns? Write back on this topic. I am on dial up and about to leave so I am limited to what I can write.

Some devices have a hard time working on certain USB hubs. Let me guess it's a 4-port hub from some company in china and it costs you $10?

Buy name brand when it comes to USB hubs just words of wisdom. www.pcmall.com offers a 7-Port D-Link USB 2.0 for $35.00. What a deal, I setup 7 of those HUBS to one machine for a print server at work so far so good.

Always get named branded USB hubs.

hi, I recently got a radio shack usb hub. it is a high speed hub and is also powered. the computer I am trying to use this with is a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. I am running windows xp. My computer reads that there is a hub with 4 ports when viewing device manager, but not what I plug into it. I can not access anything thats plugged into the hub. windows troubleshoot is no help. it says that the device is in working order. what should I do :?:

Most likely is because your DVD player does not have the audio cable that plugs into to your sound card. Your other CD player might but, to me it seems the Audio cable that plugs from your DVD player to the Sound Card is not present.

Hey,

I am having problems with the sound when playing DVD's on windows media player. It plays sounds when i watch an mpeg or some other movie file but when i play any DVD's no sounds comes out. I have gone through all the settings a few times now and nothing is helping the problem. I tried re-installing Media Player but that was giving me probelems too.

Any ideas?

Honestly being a Network Administrator for years I tend this to be the best way to setup your page file.

Kill your page file set it to 0min/0max. Restart your computer, don't do anything expect open Disk Defragmenter. Defrag your drive once done set your Min/Max to double what you have in pyhsical ram restart. I find this to have the most performance and the best way to configure your page file if wanted to configure. Just my two cents.

Post this question in the programming part of the web site I don't think anybody here can help you.

It has been a long time since my programming days and I have forgotten a few of the symbols used in declaring variables. I remember that to declare a string variable, attaching the dollar sign ($) does this. Also the exclamation (!) denotes an integer. Can anyone please refresh my memory on the other variable typing symbols, such as double and such?

Thanks,

As far as I know Windows/Router automatically does it for you man maybe someone can inlighten me.

This works fine on both PC's, however the client (laptop)machine has much slower internet access than the host, even if the host is not using any bandwidth. Does anyone know of any way to allocate bandwidth to the client machine?

Lets start from the bottom on up.

Your on XP with SP2 you probably had some spyware on the systems I recommand you start removing it now I would use SpyBot/AdAware and even MS free tool which is also a great app.

Go to Start Settings and User Accounts

Once your there change the way user's log on and off.

Check box boxes and it will go back to your orginal shutdown/log off screen etc etc. keep us posted that should do it.

hello all.........I'm bad about skipping the windows updates, but a couple of days ago I installed the updates, and since then I've noticed some changes. Me and my wife are the only users of this computer, so I've never set up other users. Now when I start up, I had to click on "Owner", because "Guest User" had been added. I deleted the guest user, and now I get the password box. I just click "ok" and it continues, since I've never set up a password before. Also, when I shut down or restart, I get a drop down men that I have to select from, instead of just clicking the restart or shutdown button. Is any chance that the update made this change, because the top of the window says "windows security", plus is there a way to change it back to the way it used to be? I guess that I'm just not one for change.

I seen this many times first download the lastest drivers for the video card. Also get Motherboard drivers and Chipset drivers. This doesn't work it might be a hardware problem I had a case at work the case was so full of dust it was casuing the video card to pretty much die. Clean the case just a thought.

Try those if you have time and nothing to lose just reformat it's the easiest fastest solution to fixing thing :) (if it works)

Ive got a hp pavilion ze5000 notebook. Its got a 2.4 ghz proccessor, 512 mb memory, ati mobility radeon graphics. Problem is that when i move a window it leaves trails behind it (not permanent, about a 0.75 second delay before they go away) and when i play a visualization on Windows Media Player they appear very very slow, both of which will bring my cpu usage to 80-100%. Ive tried changeing resolution, color bit, and turning off hardware acceloration. Any ideas on how i might be able to fix this?

It is one of those things that spending all this time trouble shooting it will (in my case) just waste time. Seriously to yourself a favor and start fresh man I bet anything that would work and it will also take less time.

Did you start with a clean format?
You can power up and work in 2000 with no problem just not get it to restart correct?

It just hangs...

It is a software not a bios or hardware problem...

MAD_DOG 35 Practically a Master Poster

Go into Safe mode create another administrator and destory the one with problems. This should cure all your problems and the easier way to change a pass is to reinstall Windows and not to reformat.

My computer is running windows 2000 and after foolishly running a virus scan program it wont let me logon anymore. The password is accepted and it begins to logon then it says that its saving settings and logging off. This is the same for all users and the administrator.

I have run repair systems from the windows cd but it did not fix the problem. I would prefer not reformat the computer but its about the only solution left open to me.

I noticed that other people have had the same problems but still no solution.

Please help!

Hi,

I have recently rebuilt my Dell Latitude laptop from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. My problem is that when I reboot the laptop, it freezes on the Windows 2000 splash screen. The problem does not arise when I do a shut down and start. I have adjusted the power management options in the BIOS but this doesn't do the trick. I have also checked the fans and they are fine. Can someone please advise on measures I can take.
