It depends where you get them from, you may get all the business routers which don't have a CD, because they trust that the people they sell them too know what they are doing! The thing i got was a Network starter pack so as you would expect it's a case of do what the CD says when it says :D
It said on mine that it will take between 20 & 30 minutes to complete, it took me around 5 :P But the CD basically did it for you.

Davey aka Happygeek is more or less the owner of this forum when Dani is busy doing something else.

But back to the issue at hand, It would be good to have a tutorial of how to make a tutorial so to speak. :)

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

What graphics card do you have in your machine? If it is quite a recent one, then chances are 300W aren't going to be enough to power that and all the other components in your computer. Try to use a PSU of around 400W that you know works (borrow one off a friend) just to see if the PSU is causing all the problems.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

With the Netgear one i purchased recently, it had a wizard disk that required an Ethernet connection to actually make the wireless part of the router work! So there is normally a wizard on the CD that is provided, or in the manual online or in paper format.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

lol, good one.
If i could vote again i would pick Antarctica, but alas i can't.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Davey Rejected one of my tutorials a while ago, and i haven't tried making one since. I might try and make one though if there was like a guide to making good tutorials by Davey himself posted in the coffee house or even in the tech area.

As roleo said, what is your modem router/router? It may be a case that one of the computers is connecting to the wrong channel, and so you get that message.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

If your have a speed of 2.2Mbps then you are using a broadband connection. To expand into the wireless networking area, all you need to buy is a Modem Router. In your case getting your internet via the phone line you must get a modem router that is ADSL. With most wireless routers now they have Ethernet ports on the back so you can keep your current Ethernet equipment. Also you must make sure that the laptop you are getting is wireless compatible with an integrated card, or you will have to buy a laptop card or an adapter for the Modem Router.

I just noticed what year the dude posted it :P

Your lack of performance were cause by the 1Gb sticks running at a lower speed because of your of other RAM. There is a way of 'overclocking' RAM sticks, but it is quite complicated to do!

If we have solved your problem please mark the thread as solved :)

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

What power supply are you using? The problems may lie there perhaps. What's the voltage of your PSU?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

What are the numbers and letters on the BSOD? To diagnose the problem, we need those numbers! The numbers we are after are the ones in bold represented by X's:
0x00000XXX

edit: you can also take a picture of the BSOD, or note down the entire chain of numbers that appear.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

You can find out the clock speed of the RAM by looking at the sticker on the RAM itself. Or by using Crucial Tech's website to scan your system to show you what you have.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Well a PC Desktop is easiest to upgrade, some software doesn't work with Mac's (games for example), Mac's are better for graphics editing and music making. PC's have an all rounded performance. Also Laptops could be worth considering, although some have poor battery life but allows you to be portable. Desktops are easier to upgrade, laptops can be tricky to alter.
Seeing as you are doing a lot of design orientated things, you might be better off with a Mac and install some decent graphics programmes. But i personally don't like Mac's. But the choice is up to you.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

I mean the tutorials section is a bit thin on things tbh. It all focuses on Software based applications and coding. There are no tutorials on doing a RAM upgrade or installing a new HDD for example. But making a localised version of Wikipedia is a bit strange, why not make a section on Wikipedia itself and have a link to it?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

My eMachines still works :P
I think i bought it in like 2004/2005 and only done 3 Hardware improvements, RAM, PSU, GFX card.

Back to your issue though, do you get any Blue Screens Of Death (BSOD)? May be a cooling issue if it just freezes instantaneously. You could try upgrading the motherboard, but is very costly because you then have to buy new RAM and a lot of other stuff. If you or a friend has a high voltage PSU (500V+) then you could try that to see if it is a PSU problem. Otherwise buying a new Laptop/Desktop is the only other option really, Unless you want to do a complete rebuild!

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Are the 2 1Gb sticks new, and the 2 512Mb ones from before the upgrade? You may not notice a speed boost because the 2 1Gb RAM sticks are having to run at the old 512Mb clock speed. Can you tell us what the clock speed (MHz) of the 512Mb sticks of RAM, and the 2 1Gb sticks of RAM. Your 'Lack of performance' may lie there.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Please Mark this thread as solved, so that people don't randomly come here in the future trying to fix a fixed problem!

Try to plug the monitor into the mobo itself if it has a VDU slot. Then see if you actually get a picture, then try to install the drivers from there. Might be worth a shot.

Well my Camera is a lovely little thing :)
It's a Panasonic Lumix TZ-1, now been superseded by the TZ-3, but the TZ-1 is cheaper and only a slight bit different.
The TZ-1's specs:
5 Mega pixels
10X optical zoom (makes far things look fab)
Mega OIS (optical image stabilizer)
Leica DC Lens
Runs on SD memory cards
Get it in black if you go for it, looks lovely :)

Go into Control Panel ==> Speech, is there a tab called Speech Recognition? This is used preliminary for speech to text recognition on Word for example but you can use it to adjust the volume for the Mic. Try to go through the wizard to see if it registers your voice.
What you can also try is doing the following:
Control Panel ==> Sounds & Audio Devices ==> Voice Tab ==> Test Hardware button. This will then show you a wizard, please follow the steps as it advises.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

You could also try other software, such as Audacity. I think the cause of this issue is down to drivers. Is this a USB Mic & Headset or does it use the Mic & Headphone jacks?

Can you boot into Safe Mode? By pressing F8 when the computer boots. See if that helps. Also when the computer used to boot fine, did the lights for Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock Flash at all? Do they still flash now when the computer starts up?

Have you tried recording a wav file to make sure that it is recording? Right click on the desktop, select new then "Wave Sound". Right click on that and select record, then on the new window that pops up, hit the red circle to record, and talk into the Mic and see if it registering the sound from your voice.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Have you tried connecting a PS/2 keyboard to the machine to check that it is still picking up a signal from a keyboard?
Have you tried a different USB to the one you normally use? The USB slot may have broken.

Carrying on from the thread "What is on your Christmas List?"

What did everyone actually get for Christmas? Did anyone get any naff gifts? Do tell us!

I did get that wireless router i was after :) So i am happy. The worst gift i got, is quite tough seeing as all my presents where quite good. I would have to pick a box of chocolates that had a lot of coffee flavoured ones, yuck :scared:

So what did the whole of Daniweb get?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

I like Audacity myself. Whenever i rip music from a CD to chuck it in my Computer, the last track sometimes has a really long bit of silence at the end going on for a couple of minutes. Audacity allows me to cut it out :) Great Little Program :)

How much RAM have you got?
Too many programs running at once draining resources, could cause a BSOD. Also what is your CPU speed? Both of these being low can cause problems when you have many programs running in the background. Have you tried disabling some of the programs that run at startup? Goto "Run" then type in "msconfig". Go into the startup tab and un-tick all the programs that are un-necessary. Leave anything that is to do with Windows ticked.

oh man that's annoying!

PDF's a funny files.
Is the pdf file that you have been created by yourself? Also any copy of the file in a Word format will always be writeable and can be edited and re-saved. Try to manually add what you want into the pdf, then use Save As to make a newer copy of that file. Does it say that it is a "read-only" file?
