Hi Kong Kek Kuat,

First of all- welcome to DaniWeb :)

We ask that members not tag their questions on to a thread previously started by another member (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread and post your question there. When you do, please give us as much specific info as possible regarding the problem (exact error messages, system specs, troubleshooting steps you've already tried, etc.).

For a full description of our posting guidelines and general rules of conduct, please see this page:

1. Find out what your friend did to your system; it would obviously be helpful to know exactly what was altered. (hint: this might not be a BIOS issue at all.)

2. Hold down the "PgUp" key while booting the computer. On that model of motherboard, this is another method of clearing any BIOS/setup configuration changes.

3. Tell us what you've tried already in terms of troubleshooing steps, so we don't start suggesting things you've already tried. Please give us full details of what you've tried, and what the results were.

i have tryed for like 4 days to get some useful coherant advise but all i seem to get is, (HAVE U TRYED REMOVIN THE LITHIUM BATT 4 A WHILE)... blah blah blah) you get the point. lol.

Removing the battery would be the right approach if you know that someone mucked with your BIOS and you now can't even get a viewable display; removing the battery erases any custom BIOS settings and returns it to its factory default.

If what you're saying is that no one gave you any details on how to remove the battery, here 'ya go:

The BIOS/CMOS battery is usually a wristwatch-type battery (usually model # CR-2032), and is located on the computer's motherboard. Exactly where on the motherboard depends on the make/style of your particular board, but it's pretty easy to spot; it will look like this:

1. Unplug the AC cord from the computer.
2. Open the case and locate the battery.
3. Carefully lift the battery out of its holder.
4. Leave the battery out of the computer (and leave the computer unplugged) for at least a couple of hours. Some BIOSes will take only 30 seconds or so to discharge, but others can take hours.
5. Reinstall the battery, plug the AC cord back in, and turn on hte computer.

the error codes were 0x000000C4 (0x00000040, 0x00000000, 0x89D587E8, 0x00000000). I tried to search for these codes on the microsoft website but had no luck.

It's difficult, because you'll rarely find your exact error code string listed in support articles. The actual error code itself is the number before the parentheses (in your case, 0x000000C4), and that is what you'll find general info on. However, the numbers inside the parentheses are usually values unique to each particular crash instance, such as the specific address (location) in memory where the conflict occured, the particular line of program code that was being processed at the time, and other such low-level technical details.

1. Have you checked for malicious infections as we talked about earlier? It's definitely worth doing.

2. You said: "I followed Microsoft's advice but couldn't work it out before this happened". How much of the advice were you able to complete before it crashed. Where exactly in the process did it crash (that is, what exact procedure were you performing)?

3. Have you looked at your Event Viewer logs as I suggested earlier? If not, do that now; post any error events that occur right around the time of the crashes.

4. Driver problems are indicated as a cause for that error. Have you installed any new devices lately or upgraded any driver software for your hardware components (video, audio, or network cards, for example)? If so, uninstall them. for drivers, go back to the previous version.

Hi jlpend,

At the very least, your log shows indications of infection by one one of the "Smitfraud" malware variants. Please do the following:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi dust_wind, welcome to DaniWeb :)

We definitely encourage anyone to participate in currently-active threads if they feel they can be of help, but we do ask members check the age and status of threads before responding to them. Threads marked as "Solved", or threads which have been inactive for more than a few months, should be left dormant.
Responding to such "dead" threads percolates them up into the page of active topics, which takes the focus of attention away from the active threads. If you see a thread which has had no responses for a few months or more, its best to leave it as is, as it's fairly unlikely that the original poster is still looking for input.

Thanks for understanding.

Having 30 running processes listed in Task Manager is actually on the low side for a home/small office computer; 30-45 processes is a good average range for such a system. Antivirus/Antispyware programs, Internet-related applications, and video/printer/peripheral drivers are a few things which usually contribute to your running process group.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

OK...

1. The pings to the localhost/127.0.0.1 address indicate that your TCP/IP software stack on the laptop is most likely not corrupt.

2. The 169.254.153.7 auto-configured IP address means that the DHCP client software on the laptop is most likely functioning correctly, but either cannot obtain a valid address from the router's DHCP server, or cannot find the router at all.

3. Did you try connecting the desktop to all of the router's ports to make sure that they work with that computer?

4. Have you tried disconnecting the desktop and connecting the laptop in its place (using the desktop's Ethernet cable as well)?

5. Run the ipconfig /all >"%userprofile%"\desktop\ipconfig.txt command on the desktop machine and post that machine's ipconfig.txt file.

When swithing devices/cabling around, remember that for the best test of connectivity you should power down all of the device each time something is switched. Once connected power the devices back up in the order of: modem first, router second, computers last. Allow each device to complete its power-on self-test and stabilize before powering up the next device.

Hmmm....
Do your firewall logs yield any clues?

Even if not, drop your firewalls (be sure to disable them entirely) as a test. Firewall programs can get corrupted or confused, causing connection problems which may not even have a visable/identifyable source.

It'd be great if anybody could get hold of an English manual for the router!

Oh, so we're both in the same boat, eh? I was hoping that you might at least be able to translate some of the settings for us. Hmm... I'll see what I can turn up while you're gone.

1. Seeing shares between the computers is a Good Thing, yes.
2. What happens if you connect the laptop via Ethernet to the D-Link router?
3. What happens if you connect the laptop via Ethernet to the XMicro router?
4. Disable WEP and/or any other security during the troubleshooting; doing so will eliminate one variable known to cause connection difficulties.
5. Setting the same SSID on both routers is the recommended way to go; please do that.
6. I'm assuming the desktop is happily connecting through the D-Link, yes?

7. To further isolate the source of the DNS error:
* Connect the laptop to the wireless network.
* Perform the following troubleshooting steps, in order, and post the results of each:

* Try reaching a site by its actual IP address instead of its URL. For example, open a browser and enter the following in the address/location bar:
http://66.102.7.99
If that takes you to Google, chances are pretty good that you've got a DNS problem.

* Click on the "Run..." option in your Start menu. In the "Open:" box of the resulting window, type "cmd" (omit the quotes) and hit Enter. This will bring up a DOS window.
At the DOS prompt, type the following commands, hit Enter after each, and tell us the results for each command:

I'll talk to some of our mods and see if they have any ideas.

Only one thing come to mind at the moment, and that is: given the fact that the computer can connect to secure sites at other locations, I'd start looking at the home router's settings.

I'm on my way out to class right now, but I'll come back to this in a few hours. In the mean time, can anyone pass us a link to an English version of that router's manual? I don't read German.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

I thought the provider only sends one ip and what would the switch do for seperation.

Right. Routers can do the separation/translation (via NAT), but switches don't have that "intelligence".

For the network configuration you've described, the switch isn't needed.
* Connect the DI-524 directly to the modem.
* Configure the DI-524 with whatever info your ISP requires.
* Verify that computers connected to the DI-524 can access the Internet.

At this point you have a couple of options as far as adding the WF719 goes:

1. Connect one of the WF719's LAN ports to one of the D-Link's LAN ports. Since the LAN portion of a router is really just a switch, connecting the devices in this way just cascades/extends the D-Link's switch portion to the WF719's switch portion. Because the configuration doesn't make use of the WF719's WAN side, you won't need to worry about configuring NAT, DHCP, or anything else on the WF719; the connection to the D-Link should be transparent, with the D-Link handling all of the NAT, LAN IP addressing, etc.
* I believe the D-Link has auto-sensing ports, so you shouldn't need to use a crossover to connect the WF719 to it.

2. You can connect the WAN port of the 719 to one of the D-Link's Ethernet ports, although that will demand twiddling with the NAT/DHCP settings on the WF719 to get it (and the machines connected to it) configured to be one the same …

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

So all should be fine as I have researched and had replies to do it this way

And you have just learned how easy it is to get bad advice.

Or maybe is this a cause from my provider not allowing me to use 2 seperate lines as I see it as well?

You have the right idea there:
* Your ISP will only assign you one IP address through the modem. The modem will pass that IP to a single device connected to it.
* A switch does not get assigned an IP address, nor does it isolate the routers from the modem. A switch is transparent; essentially, it just ties the modem and routers together on the same piece of wire.
* Therefore, as far as the cable modem is concerned, it sees two devices connected to it, and doesn't know how to handle that.

Please give us the exact model # of the X-Micro router; that info will come in handy in helping you configure things.

DMR 152 Wombat At Large Team Colleague

Does it open if you choose the software "Eject" option?
* Double-click on your My Computer icon.
* Right-click on the CD drive icon.
* Choose "Eject" from the resulting drop-down context menu.

You'll need to give us a lot more information if you'd like us to help you. As it stands right now, we don't even know if this is a Windows or a Mac problem, let alone what exact game or error message you're dealing with.

Please provide the following information:

* The version of Windows (or Mac) operating system.
* The name of the game (and the game's version, if applicable).
* The full and exact text of the debugger error message you are receiving.
* The full and exact text of the render error message you are receiving.

Once you provide the above info we'll be able to provide some solutions.

* Getting the router password would obviously be a Good Thing. Please do that.

When I get the password, what settings could cause my router not to communicate with my laptop?

The only thing I can think of that would give you that problem (assuming nothing is actually broken) would be if someone had limited the router's DHCP scope to exatly 1 client. That is, the router was set to hand out only one IP address via DHCP. This would obviously be very unlikely, though.

1. I honestly don't know if the "cultural differences" between the Chinese and US devices could play a part, but my hunch would be no.

2. Plug the desktop machine in to each and every Ethernet port on the router, one at a time, rebooting the computer each time you change ports. If the desktop can connect properly to every LAN port, the router is almost certainly not faulty.

3. Just FYI: "Limited or no connectivity" means that a network link/handshake has been established between the router and laptop, but that TCP/IP settings aren't getting correctly configured for some reason. Some ways to weed out the suspects in that area:

* Turn off the router's DHCP server, configure static IPs, reboot all devices, and see if you get connectivity that way.

* Verify the integrity of your TCP/IP stack:

You still have infections; please do the following:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\DOCUME~1\Daddy-o\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

The log entry above indicates that you are running HijackThis from within a Temp/Temporary folder. Please do the following:

Create a folder for HJT outside of any Temp/Temporary folders and move the HijackThis.exe file to that folder now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if HijackThis (and other data that you care about) is living in those Temp folders, it will be erased along with everything else!
Temp/Temporary folders are just that- Temporary. They are not meant for permanent storage, as their contents are often delete in the course of troubleshooting, by running disk clean-up utilities, etc.

one of the pins on the motherboard broke, and is stuck in the IDE cable going
to the cd drive.
brilliant..

I don't see that post reflected here, though. Any idea what gives?

destiny3000,

The "PXE" errors indicate that your computer is no longer recognizing the the Windows installation on your hard drive, or is no longer recognizing the hard drive itself.

You need to go in to the computer's BIOS, see what information it is reporting (if any) about the hard drive, and post that information here.

Open the case and double-check that IDE cable for starters. Make sure that it is correctly aligned and seated at both ends, and that no pins are bent/broken on the mobo and drive connectors.

kylethedarkn,

We were getting way off-topic with our pageview troubleshooting posts here, so I've pulled them and added them to a thread regarding the problem which we currently have going here:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/post236242.html#post236242

Let's keep hunting the problem down in that thread...

just checked javascript in firefox and it errors on the css.

This error?:
Error: Unknown property 'behavior'. Declaration dropped.
Source File: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/clientscript/vbulletin_css/style-1285cbdb-00020.css
Line: 10

on this line?:

behavior: url("/techtalkforums/clientscript/csshover.htc");

<EDIT>
Nope. FF logs a JavaScript error on any page that contains the above line. Bummer.
</EDIT>

* You keep saying "Windows 2002". There is no such thing as Windows "2002"; it would be Windows 2000.

* Upgrading the operating system on a problematic or virus-infected system is definitely not recommended; the existing problems often only get worse, as it seems you've found out.

If reformatting isn't too much of a hassle, and if you have a full version of Windows XP, installing XP from scratch is probably a good idea. Be aware that if your XP installation disk is only an "upgrade" version, this will not work. Also be aware that you will have to reinstall and reconfigure all of your programs, so you'll need to be sure you have the installaiton disks for those as well.

* If reformatting isn't the best option, you'll really need to give us a lot more detailed information on the problems you're having in order for us to try to help you fix them. Remember that we're not sitting in front of your computer; we can't see what's going wrong, and just telling us "most of my soft wares are not working" doesn't give us enough information to tell you where to start with any repairs.
