As I write this Social Networking is quite the rage, so of course businesses are trying to use Social Networking as a marketing leverage. I have done a lot of research on Social Networking and Search Engine Optimization and my conclusion will hopefully help anyone who works with SEO.

Social Networks rank higher in Google results than any other type of website. I believe the reason they rank higher is because they have a higher volume of pages, so when you are searching for a product or even a friend they are the first thing to show up on the results page.

How can I use this to my advantage?

It's pretty simple, it isn't kosher SEO so I've renamed it to SNSEO (Social Networking Search Engine Optimization) when you sign up for an account on Facebook for example you will want to be very choosy about the name you give it because your account name plays a big part in SNSEO. A Web Designer who works in Australia would probably choose a name such as Australian Web Design. When people type in Australian Web Design the companies facebook would most likely show up on the first page of Google searches. You may be surprised but a lot of people like to narrow down their searches so it would work even better if the fictitious account used a town name like the capital of Australia so Canberra, Australia Web Design should show up on the first …

President Barack Obama is Americas' first African American President. I was happy to hear that my country was open to something else besides old white dudes when he was elected. I am very sad that not everyone feels the same way about the United States new president as I do.

According to MSN on 2/17/09 around 12:00am Eastern Time someone erased all the existing content on President Obama in Wikipedia and replaced the page with an awful derogatory racial slur repeated three times.
Wikipedia quickly erased the racial slur within two minutes; sadly Google's spider crawled Wikipedia within those two minutes and picked up the racial slur for everyone to see that typed in the words Barack Obama on the Google search engine until approximately 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time when it was removed after some inquires from MSNBC.

Wikipedia can be a dangerous site when used by the wrong people. I hope that Wikipedia will place safeguards so that those words will never be posted again about anyone regardless of their hierarchy in society.

What I find interesting from a geeks point of view is the timing that the Google Spider bot searched Wikipedia and when the slanderous post went up were at the exact same time. I believe that this was more than coincidence. I think this was a planned out attack from someone who had to have studied the Google bot extensively for a long period of time.

The new year is here and while I wonder what apple, microsoft, google, Rim(research in motion), have in store for us in 2009 I am looking back at what they gave us in 2008 and all the bugs and glitches they also gave us.

Apple

Apple brought us quite a few things in 2008; I would have to say 2008 was my best apple year ever. Here is a list of what they brought us and what went wrong.

on July 11th Apple released the Iphone 3g to the public. The new Iphone was gobbled up by consumers making apple stores very crowded.
Along with the birth of the Iphone 3g there were some bugs such as phone calls getting lost, the people who bought the phone on the first day it was released were not able to use it due to some problems that were not expected, I know that there were a lot more iPhone problems but I want to focus on the positive. Apple fixed the problems that were driving users insane quickly (yes I know waiting until September for the perfect patch may feel like a long time but it takes a while to make patches)

iTunes Genius
Well this I have to say is one of the rotten apples that apple made. I do not like that my info is sent to apple; but furthermore not every song can create a "genius" playlist. I think that it would have …

I think that Facebook took the images under nudity and had to follow their guidelines to remove the images. They aren't saying you can't nurse your kid they just don't want the images on their site and they have the right to say what content is allowed on the site and what isn't. If I was running a social network as big as facebook I would remove images mentioned above due to the comments that could be made and the overall controversy of the subject. My question is why the heck would you want that on the internet?!? With triplification being used more and more anyone will be able to find that picture even years from now probably.

ddanbe is correct she could just be recieting what she read. she may very well have Aspergers also called "little einstien syndrome." Aspergers can make you look like a genius because you can memorize and reciete almost anything you have heard someone say or you have read. There are pros and cons to Aspergers; yes you are able to memorize and reciete anything you want to really but the pro to aspergers is that you get super focused on one thing and learn everything there is about that one subject. If this 9 year old does have aspergers (which it sure sounds like she does) and her focus is computers than I think we have a future Bill Gates on our hands except it will be a girl. I've heard that Bill Gates has Aspergers. I am not going to post all the cons to aspergers since it would take a few hundred pages and I know that would bore people but most people become outcasts and do not understand social cues; some teach theirselves social cues by watching others and identifying what is appropiate and what isn't (Take me for example; Yup I have Aspergers!) so anyways I will shut up now. Goodbye Black Friday; Hello Cyber Monday!

Everyone knows that retailers need to get out of the red and back in the black; and the best time to do that is during the holiday season. Black Friday is a day in the US where stores discount their prices; yet it wasn’t the best Black Friday ever for shoppers and retailers alike. Today is Cyber Monday; a second chance for retailers to mark down prices for “one day only” on their websites.

A big question everyone is probably thinking is “how do I know which stores are doing Cyber Monday?” Here is a good source to answer that exact question they have a list of sales happening only on cyber Monday all the way to sales that end in 2013! Don’t be fooled like some people were on black Friday; sure there may be some good deals today but stores like bestbuy.com are having sales today only and some sales that last all week.

I think you may be able to find good deals all of December while some stores are still trying to get back into the black; if you see something good today that you want or need then buy it; just don’t buy because it is Cyber Monday.

The Mozilla Foundation just recently announced that they have started a new program “End Of Life” meaning 6 months after a new version of one of their product is released the end of life for the previous version will cease 6 months later. Mozilla said that it is going to stop making patches and updates for Firefox 2.0 and the gecko 1.8 layout engine in mid-December of 2008.

Why’d You let go of my gecko!
Even though the life of Gecko 1.8 is coming to its final stage in life; Mozilla assured developers that third parties will still be able to fix the software for Gecko 1.8. Gecko 1.8 is the layout engine for Firefox 2.0 and thunderbird 2.0. In layman's terms it is the underbelly of Firefox 2.0 and Thunderbird 2.0; it's what makes them work.

The director of Firefox; Mike Beltzner stated that the end of life “doesn't mean 'everyone stop coding and doing reviews', more that 'we don't have a team doing weekly triage on blockers and milestone releases',"

So there you go the end of support for Firefox 2.0 is coming to a swift end very soon with Mozilla encouraging people to update to Firefox 3.0.

Microsoft’s Web Browser Internet Explorer is installed on every single Microsoft pre-packaged computer making it the computers default browser. What very few people were aware of that the “explorers” that should be making their browser safe didn’t fix an exploit that has existed for as long as 8 years until November 12th, 2008.

Microsoft says that this exploit would allow “An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.” This exploit allowed hackers to over ride your user credentials when you went to their Website . According to Computer Worlds article “Microsoft not only confirmed that the vulnerability was public knowledge before today, but it also said that exploit code was already out and about.”

it's quite a doozy to let such a huge bug be public knowledge and have it in every pre-packaged Microsoft Computer tracing back to Windows 2000. Microsoft's Internet Explorer did not just have this one Exploit; it also had another exploit that was public knowledge marked critical for 22 months. The 22 month old Exploit made it possible for hackers to attack anyone using Microsoft office or word through the XML core service; however it was never taken advantage of possibly because of the amount of hacking skill it would take; or because it may not have affected every system.

The famous saying by Tommy Callahan “Holy Shnikes!” from Tommy Boy Came to mind when I logged onto Meebo the third party Instant Messenger Website that allows you use more then one IM a time and saw their blog on the main page announcing that they have created an application for the G1.

Since I don’t own a G1 I had to be satisfied by watching the video where it shows a staff member logging onto his Yahoo and AIM Accounts via his G1. While his buddy in AIM is asking him to go out to get a drink he opens up his browser and types in the word drink; while he is still in the browser his buddy’s message appears on the top of the screen saying “at a bar?”

Since Mobile Meebo allows you to use 7 different IMs at the same time this will make keeping in contact with your co-workers, and friends much easier. The G1 is not their first mobile Application they also have made an App for the iPhone.

What I like about the G1 meebo application is that there are no SMS text charges, and it eliminates having to flip back and forwards from web browser to IM to know what your buddys are saying.

You can go to and download lively to your computer , after you have downloaded lively you can create your own room, put in furniture, and throw a party with your friends.

You can see popular lively rooms , so if your bored and want to meet strangers those are the rooms for you; always beware that the internet is just that a “net” people can pretend to be something they aren’t so be careful.

At the moment Lively has very few options for avatars, about 6 different skin colors, and not a huge selection of shells to create your room with. Today I’m writing about Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. Steve Ballmer has been with Microsoft since the very beginning; yet we didn’t hear much about him until he became CEO. Steve did a Windows Advertisement in 1986 where he was just as enthusiastic about the product as he is today.
Steve worked his way up through the company becoming Vice President; which explains why he is the CEO of Microsoft today.

Yeah sure, he has the right to be CEO of Microsoft but that does not mean he has to be the face of Microsoft. I have gathered some quotes from clips of Steve Ballmer from Youtube.
When Ballmer was asked about the iPhone he laughed and said “$500 dollars fully subsidized with a plan. That’s the most expensive phone in the world!” You should never go onto an interview and outright laugh at your competition; yet Steve jobs was nice and invited him to Macworld anyways.

Have you ever wanted to move something with your mind or make the character in your game move when you move? I know I have wanted to do those two things and amazingly enough I have with the help of technology. I was at a tech convention with products not available to the public when I played Brainball, a game where two people get black straps put on their heads. Microsoft came out with a new line of ads?

Yes, I was on Youtube looking for the Gates and Seinfield commercials; hoping that the 3rd ad was out; instead I found out that Microsoft pulled The Bill gates and Seinfield Commercials. Microsoft created a new line of Microsoft ads that actually gets their point across “connecting with the customers.”

So how do these ads “connect” better than the previous ads?

The Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfield’s ad series were less then appealing for most people; with the type of budget Microsoft has the commercial should have been in 3d where you would need 3d glasses to watch it!

I really understand what they are trying to get across with their new ad campaign because they use actual real life jobs, situations, things as simple as Bill Gates wearing glasses and an ordinary person wearing glasses. What Microsoft amazingly accomplished in these commercials is the funny factor; this surely was not easy for Microsoft to pull off as they are a company that is focused on making money not making people laugh.

Does this new ad campaign have to do with the old ads making no sense?

Apple seems to be getting a lot of media attention lately; and not the good type.

Apple has released several updates to their products recently; and almost all of those updates have some big bugs.
Let’s start off with what I would call the worst update that is currently affecting the macbook pro. Users are told that there is new firmware, some of them have downloaded it; others haven’t either way users are getting the Black Screen Of Death. Users that have experienced this issue have said that they can hear the computer working and when they press commands they hear sound but the screen never turns on.
Apple.
You can follow this issue on the apple discussion boards.

iTunes 8.01 is having trouble recognizing the iPhone, iPod, and the iPod Touch. When a User attaches an iPhone, iPod, or an iPod Touch they get this error “an unknown error 13014.” It is one thing not to recognize third party devices; but when you make the device, the software, and the Operating System, and your software still does not recognize your own device; that’s got to be quite embarrassing.

There are very few fixes known for this iTunes glitch but according to macfixit; you just need to turn off your computer; unplug your iPod, and re-boot; apparently this has fixed the problem for some users but not all.

This is not the first (or last) time that Apple will …

Who Rules the world?

That may seem like an odd question since every country has its own government or dictatorship; though in reality technology rules the world; and geeks rule technology. A fellow colleague Davey blogged about how iTunes the beloved one stop world-wide music store threatened to close their virtual doors if music Royalties were raised, music royalties were not raised. Let s say Microsoft announced it was going to stop producing new Operating Systems and patches for previous Operating systems, the world would go into panic. that's purely a fictitious example showing how much power Geeks have.

Why do Geeks have so much power?

Let’s face it Geeks think differently; an ordinary person could be looking at the ocean and watching the waves while a geek could be looking at the ocean thinking how they could replicate the wave’s effects in 3d.

I witnessed how much geek power the ordinary Joe relies on in everyday life. I was at a large store when the power went out shutting down all cash registers and security cameras; The place was pitch black and it took about 5 minutes before someone turned on the generators. It is one thing to blog “I hate Apple, why don’t they go out of business!” Sure you can do that and Apple won’t care 2 cents about you. It’s a total different ballpark when you write a blog that causes Apple’s stock to plummet.

Friday Morning before Nasdaq opened a “citizen” blogged on Cnet’s Ireport that Steve Jobs had been rushed to the Hospital due to a heart attack; with the stock market already in pandemonium an announcement like that couldn’t make things worse right? Wrong, before Apple had a chance to deny the Report; apple’s stock went from $105.04 to $94.65 cents in early stock market trading that is approximately a 9 billion dollar loss; according to Forbes.

When writing a blog you have to know your facts and make sure they are 100 percent accurate; if you notice you made a mistake after publishing the blog you should edit the blog or get it removed.

Up until now Flash has been an amazing program but had limited support when it came to indexing a site that was primarily Flash based; I am happy to say those days are behind us! Google announced on their official blog that they have released their first Flash crawler which will index flash sites more effectively.

Why should this be important to Flash Designers?

Yes, Up until now it was a struggle to get Flash Websites indexed into search engines; now flash sites will be able to rise in the Google Ranks.

Does this mean designing Web Pages will be an easier job for Flash Designers?

No, on the contrary Flash Designers should be going over their site to make sure that their Website will be read efficiently by Google. Up until now Flash Designers Did not have to worry about making their Websites Spider/crawler accessible. Many designers may see this as a ton of work that they did not expect, nor want and may have to postpone projects they are working on to re-do their current Web design.

Does this mean my HTML page won’t be indexed and will fall in the Google Ranks?

No, HTML is still easier for robots to read; though if your Website is mainly based in HTML you may need to re-design your site, because there are more sites being indexed.

People use programs such as Roboform to save their passwords or even writing them down in a Word document. I don't think it was important to update Firefox for one small bug; It makes you wonder if they fixed more then they would want you to know.

In 1999 Microsoft was sued for monopolizing the market; I think that lawsuit was unnecessary and just made Microsoft software prices more expensive. 9 years later things have changed dramatically; Microsoft is no longer the “big brother” they used to be, I believe if Microsoft does not change it’s approach they will be a has-been Operating System in the next 5 to ten years. I have already noticed Switzerland does not sell their computers with Windows instead they come with RedHat Solaris.

Present day 2008 a rather new player into the tech world is looking at as a possible monopoly; but not for an Operating System; basically they have monopolized the entire internet. Most people have at least one of the follow Google accounts. A Gmail email account, Ad manager, iGoogle , YouTube, the Chrome Browser, and let’s not forget the Android Google’s new phone.

As you can see Google controls almost all the ads on the internet, and a lot of people use gmail for E-mail because of all the new applications coming available for it like Google Talk. I would like to say that’s all Google controls but that isn’t the case; they own YouTube the biggest video site on the internet at their grasp which they acquired for 1.6 billion dollars in 2006. Google’s buyout of Youtube did not make much sense until the Android phone’s specs were released which contains the feature to watch Youtube; may I add this is the only …

A email is going around the internet telling people about the new popular iPhone game that is free! It is a .zip file and it's no game it's a trojan horse virus that infects windows and takes control of your computer. I am a big fan of the song "virus alert" by Weird Al and though his song contains some hyperbole it is also very true don't open messages that you are not sure about because "it will send your grandmother all your porn." well it may not send your grandmother porn but it could send her an email and infect her also.
Email Safety
When ever you get an email with the word free in the subject line 9 out of 10 times you should just throw it away cause it's either contains a virus or it's useless spam.
If you use Outlook Express You should know that it automatically runs scripts that are contained in an email that is why the "I love you." virus of 2001 was so disasterous.

I would like it if you posted here if you recieve the iPhone free game email. I would also like to note that this is not from Apple it's a way to take over your computer from a hacker.

Android Google's first ever Phone Operating System is going to be selling for only $200 dollars with a T-mobile Contract. Google's Cell Phone Android is a different type of cell phone then your used to. The Android is one of the few open source Cell Phone Operating Systems; this means developers can build API's for it that will rock your world.

I see one major problem with a open source Cell Phone Operating System; one word hackers. A open OS is great the only problem is the power it gives hackers to utilize a coding error in the OS to implant a virus, or overload the system with useless information. I know Google has had Android Open Source available to the public for a long time so there should be no errors but there's always that what "if" they missed something.

Note that a flaw would have to be major for a hacker to have the power to implant a virus via another pc into your phone; though if the hacker found a flaw in an application and not the actual Operating Systems coding it would be much easier.

A major tip: Give the Android a month or so before you buy it so you can wait for Google to fix any flaws; and be very careful who you buy your applications from. I always wait at least a month on any new software or hardware before buying it so I can make a educated decision on …

The BlackBerry Storm previously known as the BlackBerry Thunder was just rumors until Information on the Blackberry Storm was revealed to Verizon Employees who “leaked” the information onto the internet. The BlackBerry Storm Has a 3.2 megapixel camera, full HTML based browser, it runs on a quad GSM chip, and has a Touch screen to input your information. I know the big question for companies that sell Phone Operating Systems most likely are asking their selves “Is this going to be a major threat?” From what I have seen and read , I believe it is a threat especially to the iPhone. Research In Motion the company that makes the BlackBerry made one small error on their part; the phone is only available to Verizon customers. I am hoping I will be able to buy an unlocked version and use it on AT&T's service; sadly the everyday person who buys a cell phone does not know it will work with almost any cell phone company.
