This smells of yet another auction sniper such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auction_sniping

Here you share your code and tell us what line isn't working. If you are shopping for complete solutions that's done by writing a complete description of the app as well as saying how much you will pay. That is, putting up a for hire post.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Why I noticed: The home page changes has an oddity where the last endorsement sticks around without any way to dismess so I went off to check out how to endorse and didn't find it. Hence this post.

It's like the folk who lived in some town know where a street or location is and don't see why a map or road signs are needed.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

There's such a thing as AI Web tools. It's fine. This is how it is and it just seemed like it would work something like Linkedin.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Ok so if I find someone has expertise in AI but the machine that picks the endorsement category doesn't think so, I can't endorse them.

Odd but at least now I know.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

This just in. http://www.kut.org/post/hey-texans-if-youre-voting-straight-ticket-machine-check-your-ballot

Hey, Texans! If You're Voting Straight Ticket On A Machine, Check Your Ballot.
The Texas Civil Rights Project said it has heard about issues with the Hart eSlate machines, which are used in Travis County and many other counties.

"We’ve been hearing reports of voters who go to the booths, they try to vote straight ticket and then the next screen they see it appears that their vote has been selected for a candidate of the opposing party,” said James Slattery, a senior staff attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project.

This is the way to inspire confidence in voting machines?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Then I get their current endorsements with a possible way to endorse same categories as others have endorsed.

I don't see how to add a category or skill.

So I'm guessing here that I can't pick the category? That is, "the machine" does that? I'm guessing because I went to a new member with no endorsements and it said (short version) "has contributed enough for us to gauge topics of interest. However, no one has endorsed any skills yet. Why don't you be the first?"

So the machinne sets what skills I think the member has and not me?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Thanks Dani.

Currently you have to explore nooks and crannies to find features. If this was a thing that powers the machine in the back to connect folk. That is if your backend is looking for experts in spelunking then I'd think the endorsements would be how to find the match.

So again with my mind wipe approach, if I look at some user's profile, how to endorse isn't really evident and when you do find it, you get pages of folk to endorse and have to hunt for the person you wanted to endorse.

So, to summarize:

  1. You have to know what screen to look at to get to the Endorse screen.
  2. Then you have search for the person and topic you want to endorse.

I bet endorsements are rarer than ever.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

OK I got there but it's in some mine field display? Bunch of rectangles with member names and so on but not just that member whose profile I was on.

I haven't seen this area for some time but when I looked around there were no breadcrumbs to show me the way.

Marking as solved.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I looked all over and can't seem to find where to endorse any longer. I see others have on the front page but it's eluding me.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I think you are just spamming. Those URLs are not needed for the question and the question has plenty of prior and open discussions.

I've removed your links as spam.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I see you work on promoting a video convertor out on the web. https://www.google.com/search?q=tipard+video+convertor+reviews finds you are already doing it. Can you tell us more?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Bonus information: http://www.iwanttouse.com/#input-datetime shows how badly this is implemented across browsers. Maybe a third of users won't be able to use a page with input datetime.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Actually that's documented BUT you need to know which version of Windows to get the command syntax.

Example: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947709/how-to-use-the-netsh-advfirewall-firewall-context-instead-of-the-netsh

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

gentlemedia is right. https://caniuse.com/#feat=input-datetime

Thanks for asking. I didn't know this.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Let's break it down to prime number generation and then what I'm guessing is how to convert from 1, 2, 3 to 1st, 2nd and 3rd and so on.

Prime numbers is a rather done deal. I see 14 categories of Prime number at https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Category:Prime_Numbers
To get prime numbers has over 140 solutions at https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Sieve_of_Eratosthenes so you can adapt that to stop when you reach so many.

Next examples of 1,2,3 to 1st, 2nd, 3rd. These are ordinal numbers. I didn't find a Rosetta code but a coding challenge at https://codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/4707/outputting-ordinal-numbers-1st-2nd-3rd#answer-4712
and some of the codes are very short.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

There are so many sites about both that you must be very new not to find them. No offense intended. This site isn't about RE or stocks so the first thing to do is to lock away your checkbook and start your learning. Note "How to fish" at https://humblestudentofthemarkets.com/

As to RE, welp, that changes with time and location. There is no magic there. Thoughts? "Never own a home you don't live in."

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

It's the link I supplied. And that changes for each OS you add support for. This is why this is a bad idea.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I can't guess why this is required but sure, find the OS command that gets you that detail then put that in your os....() function with some redirect to a text file which you can parse.

What I see in your last reply is something about forensics. In the forensics work I've done we are not afraid to use the command line to get the information for the report.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Marking as (soon to be) solved.

Get well! Be well, best wishes too.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I should have posted about inline images on its own. It would be impossible (prove me wrong here) to write a tutorial with step by step pictures with all the pictures hanging out at the bottom as attachments. Was that a move away from IT and programming forums?

As to the algorithm, even when I come back a day later it looks to me to be a jumble of items. To put some order to it I head to the Read or Latest views. It's most likely working the way you intended but without a chapter 1 to what the new DW is all about, I don't get it.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

This question has other priors. My point here is it won't be OS agnostic if you do this. You would need versions for Apple OS, Windows, Linux and so on. What's wrong with the call to diskpart and parsing the result? It's a quick hack and done. Also, research the web for more ideas but as you'll find out "this is a bad idea."

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Here's what I see. (image attached, where are inline images?)

It seems odd to me to see 3 dated items there. All are same discussion and it's also strange that Dani's endorsement stays no matter what I do. I like you but this is odd to see behavior wise.

Maybe you're still tweaking?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

@alan.davies. I pulled up my Moto G 5th gen and went to this discussion. THAT was PAINFUL. It was hard to hit the rigth spot to get here. But that's beside the point.

I managed to click on your link https://www.daniweb.com/posts/bad_link/2246327?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.daniweb.com%2Fposts%2Fjump%2F2246325 (it's lined out) and off it went to:

  1. A FULL SCREEN ADVERT for Gigamon. CLOSE AD!
  2. Now I'm seeing a SALMON colored screen with a big X and "Broken Link". Well, let's try "Continue to the URL Anyways."
  3. Finally I'm at the intended discussion with "I'm not sure..."

Looks like I need to install an ad blocker and Ghostery on my mobile to avoid all this. Nod to Airplane and "I picked a bad day to stop using ad-blockers."

To all, this sort of jumping through hoops on mobile can't be good for gathering new mobile users.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

All good.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Most folk just install it clean and then see where they stand. I guess you could google it too.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

In your post is " review your lesson" which I find interesting. This class should have been building up to this bigger app. Where are you with this assignment? Are you stuck with a specific step?

@alan.davies I clicked on that link and landed at https://www.daniweb.com/programming/web-development/threads/518024/help-with-php#post2246325 so I wonder if there's been a fix put in.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

If you are giving out assignments be sure to tell if this is something you are looking for coders and what the pay is. Your post is either that or just someone that copy/pasted their homework assignment.

https://www.daniweb.com/search/index?q=CPU+Scheduling+Algorithm finds it's been kicked around before.

Also, this smells of the old pSOS system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSOS_(real-time_operating_system)

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Thanks for that. Is marking the thread solved gone as well?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That's a fairly larget undertaking. So you need to set smaller areas to conquer. How about a media thumbnail tool like: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Viscomsoft.MIThumbnailSDKActiveX

VB 10? As in VB.Net 2010? That's listed.

As to playing, for most the only players would be Microsoft's own (Visual Basic) media player. And for more adventurous out there some Apple plugin. You have a long list of things you want but are those items implemented in the players for VB? If not you may be spending a few years creating yet another video player. Here I just use WFE and VLC Player. Works great. No code.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Replicated it. While in reply tap escape. Can't see how to get out except to bail out.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

As title suggest, full screen edit happened in one of my replies. Could not exit with escape. Had to abandon the reply.

Trying to replicate now.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I've worked with MIPS before and I continue to find the best way to get there is with a C compiler. There's just not enough gain to write in pure assembler for such small tasks.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

"What's a good program to edit it though?"

That needs more detail. Here I've used notepad, notepad+, Visual Studio's editor, and countless other editors. Since when we deal with code, there is no perfect editor I tend to use the one I have available.

What detail? Once in awhile a new to coding person wants the editor to do a lot more than edit a file. They want it to have syntax checking and more. But for editing, it really doesn't take much.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I see 3 ideas to try at https://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutorials/web_graphics/article.php/3480021/Text-Over-Images.htm

In the past we would put such into the image with Image-Magick. But times have changed.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

The "clilck on the timestamp of the latest post," doesn't work for me for topics at https://www.daniweb.com/

To read latest replies I click on Read then the click on the timestamp works.

At https://www.daniweb.com/ the mouse turns from a pointer to a pointer with a ? mark on the time stamps. I've tried this in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Hey, it's a small thing but let's hope the site attracts more folk.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I want to repeat prior advice on this. If you do this it won't be OS agnostic. Read https://www.daniweb.com/programming/software-development/threads/168176/how-to-get-disk-info and other priors on how to solve but my thought is "This is a bad idea."

tony75 commented: I test the code but the code was bad! also Its better to diplay on screen not write to text file for future investigation +3
rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

@jacklin. This is Addison111's post. You should create a new post with your failing code so you have your own discussion.

Also, use prior examples until you learn how to create such a system.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That's the usual story. What happens next is up to you. You might find a new web master, learn more about your web site and the languages your site uses but eventually you have to make a decision.

Maybe put off changes until they can't be ignored?

As it stands it's unclear what this Firstpage is. PHP is a language that you could learn as there are tutorials out there but that may not be the right move as it won't tell you how this web site works. It's like learning how how to rebuild an engine but no one covered how to put the engine back into the car.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I'm going to write no because you added "low authority." To me this means your goal is not about Web 2.0 at all as defined at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0

That is, if your needs are SEO and not participating in the discussions, adding your content then no, it's not good for you.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I have to guess here. Somehow you have this website so why not tell how you got here. Did you hire someone and they are now gone?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I've never found such. And there are many reasons (hurdles?) why this isn't done. You can take a screen grab of each frame you want for your powerpoint then put that on a slide and make it that way.

If you think you need to save what you nabbed with printscreen, remember that Windows Key?
Read https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/2/15/14629560/just-hit-windows-key-plus-print-screen-for-windows-screenshots-its-so-easy

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Just a note. I went to that site and didn't see those ads, but I don't browse without Ublock Origin and Ghostery enabled. Just way too many dangers without these two.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator
rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

This sounds to me that you are vey displeased with how PHP and other frameworks, languages progress over time and what used to work, breaks as they upgrade. I've seen that with JAVA as well as PHP, Python and other systems.

While the new PHP broke your code, repairing what broke should be cheaper (hours invested) than moving to yet another framework or system.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That's your work to do but here's why I can't do it for you (besides the problem you won't be doing your homework.)

During your class they taught how they want the ERD done. How I would do this could be incorrect. Go back over your course material to find out how this is done for this class.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I worry here. Your entry level IT staffer should be able to handle the first two requests. Let's tear into the first two.

  1. Allow only the chrome brower to be active
Remove rights for any other browser. Done. This is basic OS management skills. I'll pause on that.

  2. restrict browsing ability to only allowed websites
Another kind of easy. Change the DNS to your own DNS Server and only give the resolution to just the sites you allow.
Install a firewall and only allow white listed IPs.

The real fix is to make the company policy clear. Be sure to make violation of the company rules clear. Just put it in writing and have they sign they accept that breaking the rules is terms for immediate dismissal.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Let me ask a question about line 10. When I see the value 0, did you want the character 0 or null or did you want a zero as in '0'?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Sorry I passed this discussion up. Why I skipped it is the unsupported Sierra. I've found such installs to be troublesome so my advice is to restore to when it worked (even Apple computers must have full backups.) Or bite the big one and install something supported.
