This is a little strange, I did a quick search at Kingston and they didn't list any 667MHz modules for that board, but Crucial does. What is the model of your RAM.

I tried to find the manual for your motherboard but ran out of patience with the Intel web site, check and see what it says about running a single RAM module in single channel.

Have you defragged the hdd, and how much free space do you have on it.

Have you looked to see what applications are running and tried to disable any that aren't necessary?

If a god with a sense of humour planted those fake dinosaur bones he could also have planted that fake geological "evidence".

And now a word from Scientology.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Hope this helps.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Did you format the drive?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

IDE doesn't limit the recognition of the size of the hdd the BIOS does. The SP2 for XP and SP4 for W2k will allow you to recognize the larger size hdds.

To understand this better read about the 48 bit LBA.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Two things to try, download Maxtor's diagnostic tool to determine the condition of the hdd. If you use a USB keyboard or mouse and have cleared the CMOS you may need to go back into the BIOS and enable those USB devices.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Have you tried running the system recovery disc?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

The link that I provided should provide you with a download that you will be able to transfer to a CD and boot from it. You may need to go into the BIOS and make you CD-ROM the first boot device.

This should be all you need to wipe the hdd.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

In order to determine if you have a compatibility issue you will need to provide the make and model of your motherboard and RAM, a "micro Guru something something " tells us nothing useful.

If you only have 1.3GB of free space on your hdd that is going to be part of your problem. Your hdd needs to have a certain percentage of free space to operate, yours is way low.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

That card has some good reviews, looks like it will do what is advertised. It list a transfer rate of 150kbps for SATA, but the is no SATA2.

If the reviews can be trusted it looks like an elegant solution to the addition of a SATA drive.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

> its cheaper to keep them alive,

I really wonder how this thing is true.

"Statistically" it is true, but even Mark Twain recognized the problem with statistics..."Facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable".

The problem with the death sentence is that it is final once applied, and sometimes the judicial system gets it wrong. If we could guarantee that the person was guilty then I would say hang em, and do it right now. The death sentence as it stands right now is of little or no use as a deterrent, in California there is the argument that the lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment...excuse me?!?

As for the last meal...chefs surprise, want to guess what it is???

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

What disc came with the computer?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

A couple of things come to mind, have you run scans for infections? Bear in mind that reformatting may not delete some viruses, you will need to either get rid of them by using anti virus, anti spyware...or wipe the hdd and start fresh that way. Reformatting only deletes the addresses, wiping the drive will over write everything.

Did you defragment the hdd after installing the OS?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

It would help to know which ABIT motherboard you have and what make and model of the modules you purchased.

My first thought was that if you tried to add the new modules with the old ones and try to run in dual channel you could have some compatibility issues with the different modules. In order to run in dual channel the modules need to have the exact same specs, especially with an application as demanding as what you are doing. This would explain why the new modules would work by them selves but not with the old modules.

The user's guide for your motherboard should show the proper placement of the modules for dual channel operation or non dual channel.

If you clear the CMOS by using either the jumper or by removing the battery it will reset the BIOS to the default settings. So if you are using a USB mouse and keyboard you may have to go back and enable the USB settings for those devices.

One last thought here...how much free space do you have in you hdd?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

hardly, given the estimated age of the universe of 5-10 billion years.
At the short end of the scale that makes it 5% of the age of the universe ago, at the long end 2.5%.
If a human lives for 100 years, that makes it 2.5 to 5 years on the life of a human being, quite a bit more than the blink of an eye which takes about 1/20 of a second :)

Who's confining this to our back yard?;)

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

"Recent supernova?!?!?" It happened some 240 million years ago! :icon_twisted:

That's freakin' kool!!!

In the cosmic scheme of things that is a blink of the eye.

RwCC...if you have the kind of results that I have had you will be a very happy camper.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

The power requirements call for a combined 26A on the 12V rails.

What make and model is your PSU? It would be close, but if your PSU is a good one you may be able to get by with it.

this article brakes it down for power consumption.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

and btw. this is probably considered completely and totally off topic so flame on whoever ...

Enjoy the chat room kids, it's all yours.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

That motherboard has four expansion slots. Each memory slot can hold DDR PC3200,DDR PC2700,DDR PC4000 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Do you have both sticks in the blue slots?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Check this out, this is the brightest supernova ever viewed. More images can be seen here.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

If you didn't get the hdd with it did you at least get the operating system installation disc with the product code.

If not your are going to have to purchase one.

If you did then it's just a matter of installing the hdd, use the installation disc to format, partition, and install the OS. The disc will prompt you through the process.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Outstanding! That made a big difference, thank you ever so much.

Edit: I had a couple of minutes to play with this and am amazed at how much faster this is now, sweet! Now all I need is for someone to come up with a solution to my gout my day will be made.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I did a quick look to see if I could find the controls but had no luck, google didn't provide much of anything useful. If someone could shed some light on this I sure would appreciate it, and evidently so would others.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Yes Christina...your 98 grand am with all those miles was really nailing this topic...your turn.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Excuse me? But we were not off topic AT ALL.
We were talking about DRIVER'S education. Isn't this thread titled 'Are teens bad drivers?'

Wow, calm down dcc.

If this thread was about surgery you would be comparing scars and thinking that it was germane to the topic. Are you sure you're not really blonde????

Duki commented: ENOUGH with the stupid blonde jokes. They're not funny and it's getting old. +0
christina>you commented: Yes, I am thoroughly tired of it too. I'm not blonde! -2
dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Here's a bet..infarction and christina, I bet neither of you can stick to the topic of this thread for more that five posts. Neither of you show any respect for anyone esle's threads, you just go off on your own tangent. I started this thread to avoid this situation as it was occurring in another. Show some maturity, or at least some respect.

Now y'all have a nice day...ya hear?

christina>you commented: ?!? -2

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

First off...use only one anti virus at a time, they do not play well together, especially snorton.

With the combination of infections and missing files I would suggest wiping, not a format, the hdd and reinstalling the OS. You can download WipeDrive for this purpose. If you still have infections and can't get rid of them don't bother backing up your files as you may transfer those infections to the fresh installation. A format will only remove the address of the files, wiping the drive over writes it completely.

There are free anti virus softwares out there that a lot more user friendly like AVG, try it...you'll like it.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Have you purchased the hdd yet?

Do you have the installation disc with the proper product code for the operation system?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

What's a graduated driver's liscense? Do they use them in Ohio?

I did provide a link with that information, all else failed...google is your friend.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I don't understand why you decided to post this thread.

All because I said, 'statistics or stereotypes?'

I didn't mention you, this is not about you, have a nice day.:)

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Dang stymiee...I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Out of the seven web sites that I visit or use on a regular basis this site is consistently the slowest to open pages. Granted I'm using a dial up connection that averages 26.4kbps, but the other sites open much faster. Can anyone here explain why this is?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Try some good media like taio yuden or verbatim, you might also try using DVD-R rather than the +r.

What software are you using to make your copies?

There is a strong possibility that we are about to encroach in to some legal difficulties if this is regarding software like DVD Shrink or DVDFab. If this is the case pm me and we can discuss this there.

There are certain legal ramifications that make it a bad practice to post queries of this nature.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Are you sure that you have the on/off header pins properly wired?

There is an interaction that occurs between the PSU and the motherboard when it is first turned on. The motherboard shorts the green wire in the 20/24 pin connector to ground to turn on the PSU. If the PSU is turning on without the power button on the front of the case then you may have a motherboard issue.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

jbennet...these are not bad drivers, these are inexperienced drivers. Most people improve their driving skills over time with practice, those who do not improve eventually will prove themselves to be bad drivers. Some people just can't coordinate their thoughts and actions.

Please read the information that I have provided in my other thread, the link is listed above.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Serunson wrote this in another thread "also why is it that men automatically get the 'bad speed daemon' title and have to pay obscene amounts compared to women on car insurance?"

Statistically the most dangerous group of drivers are males between the ages of 16 and 25.

pty...I didn't get my first decent break in the cost of my insurance until I turned forty, and just realized my second decent break at the ripe ole age of fifty five. I have a friend that waited until he turned fifty five so that he could better afford the insurance on his dream car, a 2003 fiftieth annaversay issue Corvette.

One of the issues that the graduated drivers license is experience, for a detailed outline of what the NHTSA and the AAMVA has suggested read this.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

also why is it that men automatically get the 'bad speed daemon' title and have to pay obscene amounts compared to women on car insurance? ~ is that the same in the US cause it is here
btw sorry if you missunderstood my earlier post ~ no offence intended

I have started another thread titled Are teens bad drivers in which I address your question.

If anyone else wants to respond to any of the off topic posts about teen drivers here please do so in this other thread. Let's respect the member who started this thread by not hijacking it.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

It has been suggested my another member that teens are unjustly stereotyped as being bad drivers. Personally I don't believe this because it conflicts with the current general consensus that the stereotypical bad driver is either a woman or a minority.

My contention is that teens aren't bad drivers, but they are inexperienced drivers. The sad truth statistically is that the largest amount of teen deaths is because of automobile accidents, and most of these accidents are related to speeding. There are always going to be contributing factors involved, such as distractions, the time of day, and of course drugs and alcohol.

The general trend at the moment is for a graduated drivers license. This is being practiced in all but five states, Arizona may reduce that number to four in the near future as they are trying to pass legislature for their own graduated driver license program. The restrictions these programs impose vary from state to state.

How do you feel about this approach, do you think the restrictions imposed are strict enough or not strict enough? What changes would you like to see?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

hey hay hay calm down people. He didnt mean anything sarcastic when he said "dont want to be aq statistic". That is what the adverts say over here - its kidna the motto of the whole safe driving program

The sarcasm that is being referred to was made by Kristina who contends that teen drivers are unjustly stereotyped as bad drivers.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Oh god.. which ever thread i step into.. people are arguing rather than talking about the topic.. Grow up kids.. enough of silly arguments.

Oh yeah??? Well she started it!!!:icon_lol:

I'm busted, I'm participating in one of the actions that I criticize others for. You need to understand that at my age it isn't uncommon for me to have a senior moment and forget what the original topic was.:icon_rolleyes:

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I hate to dissolution you but both definitions came from wikipedia, I find the definitions to be basic enough that even a grade school student can understand them.

One of my best friends recently lost his eldest son is a car accident, he now is one of those statistics and I don't see any humor in your sarcasm.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Try doing a last known good configuration.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Christina...a stereotype is a red neck plumber bent over exposing cleavage as described by his peers.

Seriously... statistics are used to summarize a set of observations, in order to communicate as much as possible as simply as possible. In this case the deaths of teens involved in automobile accidents.

Stereotypes are ideas held about members of particular groups, based primarily on membership in that group.

Serunson was expressing a very real concern for a very real statistic directly applicable to his age group of drivers, there isn't anything stereotypical about it.

The only correlation between this discussion and the topic of this thread is that I have now aged another several minutes having to explain myself to you.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

What exactly do you mean they quit working?

Do you get pixelation that increases until it just stops or does it just reach a point and stop?

What kind of media are you using?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Most CPU fans run all of the time, some are thermostatically controlled for operating speed but still run all of the time.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Statistic or stereotype?

It would seem that perhaps you are the stereotypical type observing someone who is well aware to the statistical facts facing a specific age group of potential motorist?

Is it just an unintentional quirk on your part or do you intentionally try to derail the topic of any thread you respond in? Let me rephrase this...are you blonde or sly?:icon_lol:

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

If this computer is still under warranty you would be better off letting HP replace the fan as finding one to replace it with could be a real problem.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Chaky...you beat me to the response. I agree, it would not be cost effective to repair the drive.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I still don't know what you are referring to when you say higher the memory. Are you talking about larger amounts of GBs?

There is no issue of instability with the capacity of hdds that I'm aware of, the only problem that I can think of related to capacity would be if the hdd is getting too low in free space. The hdd needs to have free space in order to operate properly, if it is too full it will slow the computer down.

If you read this article you will find that in a Adobe Photoshop CS2 image-processing test the Athlon 64 FX-62 was slower than either the Core 2 Duo E6700 or the Core 2 Extreme X6800. As I have said before, I'm a die hard AMD fan, but the new Intel line of CPUs are the best bang for the buck...right now.
