maui...you have 243 post, yet you don't provide the most essential basics to help you??? Ok...you get the form letter version.

If you go to Crucial you can either use the configurator which you enter in the specifics for you computer or motherboard (which you omitted here) or they can scan it at that site. Either one will provide you with a list of what will be compatible with your computer.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

If you introduce the old hdd to a different motherboard with a different chipset from the original it will cause problems with the OS.

Another possibility would be that the hdd just died of old age. I'm guessing that those hdds are from a machine form the late 1990s.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

The PSU is intended to power the system, not for welding. Make sure that the motherboard is isolated from the case. The only areas of the motherboard are the ones that have the solder surrounding the mounting holes.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Seriously doc, you had to see this poodle to believe it...wait, I promise it won't happen again.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Without knowing the specific board that you are referring to I can only suggest that you google and see if anyone offers newer drivers. Often there will be someone with alternative drivers.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Usually when a hdd dies it is usually because of a board failure, or what I suspect in your case is a physical problem with the disc. For that there is not repair.

As I said, if it still works back up your important files and be prepared for it to fail. You should be able to transfer your important files to you internal drive provided you have enough free space left.

Best Buy and Circuit City won't be able to do anything more than what I have suggested you do, of course they can and will do it for you for a price.

As for replacing it instructions for formating and partitioning a new hdd to replace you external one can be provided it you need.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

The power on self test looks at the RAM, disc drives, and all of the peripheral devices and if there is a failure in any of these it will fail to start without at least prompting.

This computer is what seven or eight years old? If you have to replace any parts it won't be cost effective to invest anymore money in this machine.

Another issue here is taking the hdd and installing it in another computer, if you install it in another computer with a different motherboard as a master you may have damaged the operating system. When a hdd is installed with one motherboard it will recognize the chipset of that motherboard, and when you introduce another motherboard with a different chipset it confuses the OS and can even be fatal for it.

Frankly RAID isnt worth it. Neither is putting the swapfile on a seperate partition. The only time youll see a boost in that department is if you put the swapfile on a seperate physical disk.

Get a PCI cooler or upgrade your fans and thermal compound. The HT is easialy damaged by heat. Dont get a laptop.

Be nice now jbennet...please explain for the nice person your reasons.

Did you install the old hdd with the new motherboard without any changes?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

hello Pi, and welcome to DaniWeb.

What did you use when you scanned the computer?

It does sound like some kind of infection, some infections will not be active in the safe mode which would explain why it will load normally. This inversely is why it is best to run your scans in the safe mode as you have.

Try downloading Asquared, it is free. This not only detects Spywares, as detected by classic Anti-Spyware programs, but also Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Dialers, and Keyloggers.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Hi Rachel, and welcome to DaniWeb.

This is not good news, this is usually indicative of a failing hdd. If it still works start transferring the files you want to save either to another hdd or DVD. Usually when they start making this kind of noise they are on the way out.

Look in your BIOS and see if the SMART feature is enabled and see what it says regarding that drive. The SMART is a industry standard self-diagnostic system built into the hdd, if it says SMART bad it is dying.

Dani PMed me with pretty much the same information and it looks like the majority of the recipients of this message are making infractions of the rules and need this reminder.

There is one thing that I can think of that would help in situations like mine, place a disclaimer in the message indicating that it was automatically generated with the closure of the thread. You then could extend this to state that the closure for the thread may have been do to infractions of the rules and regulations and then suggest that they read the FAQ and rules.

What can one say, they have too much time on their hands?

The obvious problem with threads that are several months to several years old is that the problem has already been taken care of in one fashion or another. There's always the possibility that the member doesn't even return here.

I would like to see a lock placed on threads after a specific amount of elapsed time. If anyone wanted to discuss the topic of a closed thread there is nothing to stop them from starting their own thread on the subject.

This would also stop one of the other problems that occur when people search through threads trying to answer their problem and find one that has their type of problem but doesn't solve their specific problem. The trouble starts when this person reopens a thread and says yeah...I have the same problem, did anyone find a solution?
Most members see a thread this old or with a number of posts and won't bother with it so the person posting in the old thread doesn't get the help that they need or would probably received if they had posted their own thread.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

As you may have figured out most people will see a hijack this file and will run the other direction, it is also helpful to place it in the proper forum if you want it to be read.

If you have only run scans with Norton and Adaware then you may not have been thorough enough. I would suggest also running the following, they are free downloads. It is most effective if you make these scans in safe mode.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

If you have not already found it there is a tweak that you can make to Firefox which will make it a little faster.

1. Type "about:config" in the address field.
2. Set the value of network.http.pipelining to "true".
3. Set the value of network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to "100".
4. Set the value of network.http.proxy.pipelining to "true"

From what you members have said it would appear that the message that I interpreted to be an admonishment is in reality pro forma.

In this case it did at first appear that I was being instructed to police my own actions without being told of any specific reason. In my response to Dani I specifically mention my curiosity about being instructed to read the FAQ and rules, and in her last response to this she cited members finding the thread "insulting, upsetting, etc.", there was no response to my query about infractions. At that point it did indeed look like I was being singled out for some unspecified problem, and the rest as they say is history.

This type of statement shouldn't be sent unless it is warranted, and then should also be accompanied with an explanation of what infractions had been made. To the first time recipient this pro forma statement, especially in these type of circumstance and the message that followed, appears as a reprimand.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I have never seen this statement in any of messages that I have received from her before.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I started the thread regarding the shooting a Va. Tech, and this evening I received the following message from cscgal telling me that it had been closed.

It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with our FAQ, which includes both our Rules in addition to a welcome guide to getting started at DaniWeb. Remember, DaniWeb's rules and regulations may vary slightly from other online communities you may already be familiar with.

I find it alarming that she would take this action and then insinuate that I have violated the rules and regulations pertaining to these forums without mentioning any specifics.

If I have offended or upset anyone by this thread then I do apologize.

I left this site for a five month period due to a conflict with a previous moderator because of their treatment of new member, and if I am to be reprimanded as ambiguously as this then perhaps I shouldn't have returned.

Make and Model isn't necessary. I already know its specs. It takes PC 2100 DDR-266 SODIMM RAM.

I know it can take at least up to PC2700 DDR RAM, the question is, will DDR2 RAM function in the slot as long as the RAM is keyed the same for the slot.

Well congratulation then. Since you know the specs I won't need to look them up for you, and you will already know what the chipset is and whether it will be compatible with DDR2.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

How about the make and model of that laptop.

Although it is tempting to rip their head off and yell down their throat, this will only exasperate this minimum wage earner who's biggest concern is probably not related to you what so ever. Do the prudent thing and treat them as you would like to be treated if the situation was reversed, if this doesn't work...then rip their head off.

Seriously, stay cool and take advantage of the warranty. As a customer you have rights, use them.

The following can cause the CPU to over heat.
1. The heat sink fan isn't working.
2. The heat sink isn't firmly attached to CPU.
3. The thermal compound between the CPU and
heat sink is inadequate.
4. Accumulated dust interfering with the air flow.

Check for these and let us know what you find.

ATX form factor PSU.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Did you format and partition the hdd?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

alc6379...I have to disagree with placing the DVD and the hdd on the same IDE calbe, this means that the slower drive is going to dictate the speed for both devices. I would place the CD and DVD on the same IDE cable and leave the hdd one a cable by itself.

I also agree with having a second partition for the OS, this way if you ever have to reformat and install the OS you won't have to bother with your other files. I would suggest limiting you partition for the OS and up dates to 20GB or 30GB, you won't need half of that capacity.

RAID with a PATA hdd is only going to give you at most a 20% increase, and at 100kbps transfer rate that isn't going to be significant, besides CF2 is only indicating the purchase of one hdd. If your motherboard supports SATA go with a SATA hdd, it will be faster than two PATA drives in RAID. The SATA starts at 150kbps transfer rate, a pair in RAID would could well be worth it depending you you applications.

Is the fan in the PSU speed controlled?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Having more RAM is important in ripping and burning movies, but there are other variables. The length of the movie, the type of encryption, the amount of space you have on your hdd.

I have about two hundred movies backed up on my media computer for my home theatre, and I have seen movies that are the same length take different amounts of time to rip, the burn time is a lot more consistent.

Are these new modules exactly matched with the other two modules?

Have you tried to adjust the frequency in the BIOS?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

The best way is to install a SATA controller card.

Mattethington wrote...
"And let's look at DCC's interpretation of the second amendment, which he claims is bolstered by court hearings."

My interpretation? That was a quote from a prominent spokesperson! And specifically what was being referred to was the Dick Act of 1903.

http://academic.udayton.edu/health/syllabi/bioterrorism/8Military/milita01.htm

In 1903, Congress attempted to restore the usefulness of the state militias with the Dick Act. This act marked the beginning of the federalization of the militia. The Dick Act also split the militia into two branches: the organized militia, which became known as the National Guard, and the unorganized militia. The act provided federal funds for equipment and training, required drill a specified number of days each year, and gave federal inspectors the right to review state militia practices. Congress continued the federalization of the National Guard through numerous subsequent acts. The result today is that the National Guard is a reserve force of the United States Army under significant federal control.

The NRA went on a campaign a while back to imprint the phrase "the right to bare arms" in the public's mind which has had its desired effects, most of our youths today aren't aware that this is only an excerpt of the entire quotation.

The following two quotes are excerpts from this article.

"Former Chief Justice Warren Burger, appearing on the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour, December 16, 1991 stated "The Second Amendment has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of frauds, and I repeat the …

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Sorry, don't mean to back track old issues discussed but DCC your information is wrong. Those aren't my quotes. However, I am in agreeance with the dislike of the NRA;)

My apologies, I will go back and find the responsible party and readdress this to them. I try not to incorporate long winded quotes in my replies which lends it self to this kind of error.

There was a time when the NRA was an organization who's aim was to protect the rights of the American hunters. They are just off the wall now, I quit supporting them when they started misquoting the second amendment. Both the NRA and our large unions are all for themselves now days.

(and yes I did use the word aim intentionally.)

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Those aren't funny, they're just plain dumb. Obviously some of them are true, but it seems that the editors of that page have got some things as screwed as the laws they're trying to promote.

No one would get convicted for breaking the above laws.

Do you think the three stooges or most of what passes as sit coms today are funny? I find these to be dumb.

As for the laws being enforced, I have to admit that I have a hard time wrapping my head around some of these, but I'm sure that if I was a little more aware of what was going on back then they would make sense. Some of these laws are still on the books which means that technically they can be enforced.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

sure jumper !!! master or slave...

SATA hdds don't use jumpers for master and slave, they are totally independent.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Christina is going to hang a hypocrite sign on me for this, but it looks like this thread is winding down anyway...so what the heck.

I had someone point out a similar site for dumb laws a while back, and occasionally I go back and peruse these sites. Because of this I find some of the same laws repeated, if you find the law to be suspicious google it.

The one that gets me is No one may carry an ice cream cone in their back pocket if it is Sunday.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

As much as a pain in the arse as it is you need to make use of the warranty. If you open it you may void the warranty and then you will be stuck with what you have. You might see if you return the puter and get you money back.

I don't know what sort of consumer protection you have over there, but you should be able to get some sort of assistance if these people are being difficult.

Good luck.

Edit...I just noticed that we now have a censor, I wasn't aware that the word a r s e was not permited.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

It may not be a problem now, but I can definitely see some difficulties in the future..

The Supreme Court does not want to rule on issues like this because it sets a precedent from which there is no return. A good example is Michael Newdow's attempt to have the words Under God and In God We Trust removed from the pledge of allegiance and our currency, if they decide on this it will have serious effects either way it goes. On the one hand it could make this a conflict with our constitution regarding the separation of God and state. On the other hand if it went the other way it could mean the removal of the word God from most every thing in public.

Want a good chuckle? Check out Dumb Laws. Now here are some law that need changing!

The quick way would be to use a utility like WipeDrive to wipe the hdd and then format and partition the hdd and reinstall the OS.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Have the owner do it, it's free and they can uninstall it easily after they're done.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Thanks for saving me the effort digitalocksmith. Another utility that may provide further detail is SIW, it is free as well.

By the way, there are ten models of the socket 755 Celeron D Prescott-256.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Nice catch.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Try wiping the hdd with something like WipeDrive and start with a fresh format and partitioning.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Josh, if it ain't broke don't try to fix it. We do have the right to purchase, own, and use firearms and that's not going to change in our lifetime.

One thing that we could do would be to add another restriction to the eligibility for the purchase of firearms. Psychologist and Psychiatrist are required to report certain types of patient information to law enforcement, I would like to see them required to report patients who demonstrate the potential of violent acts. This information should be used to make these patients ineligible for the purchase of firearms and ammunition.

Unfortunately this will never happen because these doctors will never be able to say positively that these people are going to become violent.

Oh well, it's three in the morning and I'm just thinking out loud.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Hey, there weren't many people debating this issue, and we suddenly became very bored! We only talked about proxies for a brief period of time. If this is the first time that anyone has ever gone off topic in a thread then please shoot us both..

As for the 2nd amendment.. I have never in my life heard of it interpreted that way dcc.. Even in the college level Government class I took, the professor never mentioned your interpretation.. I know that it does not say specifically in the constitution that all American citizens have the right to bear arms.. It was implied, and most people accept it that way.. It's just the strict-constitutionalists that are always trying to bring up insignificant points about the constitution...

Actually the courts have been interpreting it this way for a very long time. I wish I had bookmarked something I was reading yesterday regarding a man that was arrested for transporting firearms over the state line. The man tried to defend this by invoking the second amendment, the court eventually determined that the second amendment does not guarantee a person the right to bear arms.

As I wrote in my last long winded post, there is a tremendous amount of information out there regarding the second amendment. I suspect that your instructor may have been walking the straight and narrow lest they open up a can of worms that would last all semester.
