Follow Bal advise. It is the best. Try doing a full scan first. Second, you say other pcs can connect to internet and browse the web, are you sure yout pc is the only one affected? Have you change any browser settings, but i doubt it since all your browsers are affected. What have you been doing with your pc. Did you download any applications recently?

Subscribing to this thread. As Jingda said, And Bal, above.

Caperjack, that is an interesting post for you. It seems rushed, disjointed. your posts are usually so well structured.

If you would like to change the behaviour, try this link. Then come back here and thank us.

To most christians, the bible is like a software license. Nobody actually reads it. They just scroll the the bottom and click "I agree."

nice.
I like to think that I am a 'practising christian'. yes, I do read that book. about a 1/2 chapter a night. Then spend 2h researching the passage. it has an intrinsic depth to it that a straight 'readthrough' will never reveal. very interesting.

anyway..

one thing that I will say, it doesn't autostart with windows. you gotta set that up yourself. I wonder how many people think they are running this, when they are not.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Just Joined in, again. I first found out about this through ATI, the Graphics card guys, they used to supply the F@H software with every distro. I think it didn't catch on, because they didn't really explain it that well.

anyway. I have added my PC to the list for now. 4x 3.2 core+ infinite RAM. yeah right. I will give F@H full control @ idle - as much as the config will allow. ups to dani.

meh, it works fine on my work PC but after i installed it on my Media Center at home i now have HDMI audio issues. i need to unplug hdmi then plug it back it for sound to work each time. The funny thing is that this is exactly one of the things SP1 was meant to fix. I did not have this issue before, now i do. Grrr Microsoft, grrrr!!!

That's Kind of funny - I am not laughing at you , I promise! But it is tipical of MS stuff. "Grrr Microsoft, grrrr!!!" Yarp.

Ummm....
My thought is maybe you could look directly on the support site for the patch, download that specific KBxxxxx / hotfix file and try it. I don't have HDMI, so i cannot help you , but (for the benefit of others)
MS SUPPORT
The HDMI Fix for Win7

Failing that, my next steps would be to uninstall+delete the drivers from device manager, and reinstall using the latest versions, downloadable from windows update, or the devices' manfacture. no device has been mentioned, so I cannot help you here. Besides, the how-to for that is outside the scope of this thread, and is well-covered elswhere. you are welcome to ask me about that, though.

"If all else fails, reinstall Windows - like every newbe 'I want to help you' suggests". LOL. NO I DON"T RECCOMEND THIS! LAUGH ALREADY! :-)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

That's all very good Suggestions.

The most likely cause (and the easist to fix)
Is that one of your bios settings is incorrect - either you can reset them all back to factory, as suggested above, or you can look for the one setting that is doing it. This setting, I am guessing, is the one related to uPNP Devices (Universal Plug 'n' Play). You will find that it is a setting that enables/disables PS/2 Based Operating systems.

I cannot remember which is which, But Linix is one, and windows is the other. I think I usually have it enabled for Windows, But try it both ways around. There are a hundred Tutorials around that show you how to get into the BIOS of a machine, once there you will be able to change this setting (if it is there at all - some machines do not include this option in their BIOS)

nLite is a cool program, but it is not a beginners' trick. although that would be an awesome thing to do (I have done it for every one of my PC's, along with full HDD Cloning) it is not something that you just grab and do... unless you are a true "PCGeekaZoid". You are welcome to give it a go, but I don't think that it will be the cause of your problem. That motherboard update might be worth a shot though!

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

OK. Please Define "Shut Down".
Does it:
a) switch off with no warning?
b) attempt to switch off properly whenever it feels like it (but never completes)
c) shut down whenever it feels like it (and takes ages to finish shutting down)
d) instantly reboot at random (ie shutdown instantly, then start up again)

Some Possible Causes (and how to test them:)

If it is trying to do a proper shut down, then it is not a heat or a RAM issue. In this case it will be Either Windows Update set to "completely automatic" where it will instal and shutdown the system quietly and "without permission", or some other software trying to do the same thing. I know that ESET Smart Security Can be set to do this behaviour, For Example.

If it is getting part way through a shutdown and not copleting it, then it is a power (Battery) Issue. Your battery is not an issue, you have already said so.

If you think that it is overheating (And my gut feeling is that you are correct) then the best way to moitor those temps is with an awesome app called SpeedFan.
If your CPU temp goes over about 60deg, then bad. If it goes over 80, expect it to shut down.

If it Reboots without warning, then it is most likely corrupt RAM. You can use this to test it …

Nice one, Caperjack - been A while since I have been around, missed your humour!

@Birde
Very interesting...
No chance that you have disabled your HDD?

I have just re-read your first post, Birde.
This is the point that you enable the PC to boot from CD/DVD and load the OS onto the machine, FROM the CD.

In other words, congratulations, you just set the PC Hardware up correctly. Please Proceed to load Windows onto the machine.

Note, XP comes on a CD, Win 7 comes on a DVD. You need a DVD reader to load Win7. If you come back saying "but I'm trying to put Vista on it", My question is "WHY"?

I have this horrible feeling that you may not be able to.

the best that I personally would be doing now, in your situation, is looking into

and read this:

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Have you DISABLED the network booting options in your bios? not just in the startup options, but int the Full SETUP options in the BIOS.

You can't go safe mode. Safe mode is something you can only et to when you boot into th pre-installation environment in windows. This error is still occurring insde the pre-operating system environment. I ca help you out later if needs be - I just jumped on quickly and need to get gone again, But I just want yo uto know that help is around. I will get back as soon as I can.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I just had a quick thought.
If you can launchthat version of Startup repair, then you have windows 7/vista. in that set of options that lets you launch the startup repair, should be the recovery console.

check this out:
http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/
it's designed as a walkthrough for win XP, but it is exactly the same proceedure even if you have a different "error"

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Everyone has an explanation, but no one has a solution.

The answer to this is:
Number 1. STOP USING THE COMPUTER
If the file is Just 'deleted', then it is still on the computer, it is just "floating in space" - you computer has cut it loose and is not keeping a track Of where it put it any more, but it may still be on the hard drive. There is software out there that can physically scan the HDD to look for these Kinds of files.

the best one that I have found is:
Easeus Dedeted File Recovery
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/

Step NUMBER TWO

Download this from another computer
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/
load it onto / install it and run it from a flash drive.

save any recovered files to anything except the HDD that you are trying to recover.

that's your last best hope. If that doesn't do it, then

Step NUMBER THREE
http://www.easeus-deletedrecovery.com/download.html
their full disk recovery product might, and if that doesn't then you have already overwritten it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Heh.

I had a copy of Win7 that I don't USE, but I do play with it, a lot - a sandbox for new programs, etc. I will tell you that SP1 does not like HAZAR RemoveWAT 2.25

Depending on your bild of FireFox, some have memory leak issues, to learn more about this, read this wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_leak

There is a neat little utility around that can help you with that cleanup. it does it automatically, in the background. you are looking for programs like "FreeRAM", RAM Cleaner, or the freeware one included in glary utilities. it is 'hidden' under in there, but it will do the job of cleaning that ram up when you get close to your freeRAM limit, or when the PC is idle.

http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/glary-utilities/
it's called the "memory optimiser" in the modules section.

You've got to love when the firt thing someone recommends that you format your system, huh? David C, you didn't even recommend they back up their stuff first? the procedure that you describe involves destroying all the data that the user has on their computer@!

DC is right about the bad sectors approach, but thee are ways to check that without the "format first" approach. My first question is, do you have access to the recovery console?

If you don't know, then don't worry about it.

Do you have the original "installation disks"?
-you wil need the one that installs windows from fresh, NOT the "Manufacturer's Factory image" - THAT will wipe out all your data.

I am short on time tonight.
even if you don't have either of these, there is still hope.
What you need to do (I can walk you through tis later, but this is a general overview.)

is take the HDD ofline - plug it into another PC, or run an operating/recovery program from a CD and back up your data first to another HDD
then do a chdsk
then run a recovery/repair, prefferably from the commandline.

at least that gives you a heads up. you can oogle for how to's or get back to me if you need the step-by-step.

gotta go.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

@drmac
It looks like I dropped this thread accidentally, some time ago. I am really sorry - I must have missed the email or something.

do you still want help with this? y/n?

one quick idea
If you were willing to spend a little money, buy a very cheap box (no monitor needed once it is set up)

connect it to the net
connect the switch to it - so that it sits between the internet and the network. enable ICS (internet connection sharing) - use the networking wizard in XP/whatever on this 'server'. disable dhcp on the switch.

you can then control the maximum speed to independant IP's or MAC addresses.
start by blocking everyone. if they want access, then they have to give you their mac address. you can limit and monitor individaul speeds per user, based on time of day, amount they have used in a time period, etc. Awesome program.

I can open it perfectly. Maybe it was having trouble temporarily? can you open it now? Can you tell me what browser you are using and what version? (usually under "help" in the menu bar at the top. If you cannot see the menu bar at the top, you are probably running internet explorer 8 and you will need to rclick near the top and enable the menu toolbar)

First thing you could do if you would like to try something, is download firefox and try it.

digitalrajanna Hasn't replyed to this thread since his 1st post. whic means he doesn't need any more help. which means: any of:
1. he fixed it
2. he realised he made a mistake and neglected to inform us
3. he is messing with us.
4. any, all, or none of the above (something else entirely)

What ever the case, I think we should all stop adding suggestions until he replies, because without his feedback, or someone else calling in with the same problem, suggestions to fix an (impossible) problem are pointless, and give this thread higher rankings than it deserves.

Well, that's just my opinion, anyway.

Hello there, I need help too. Does anyone know any internet provider who supplies connection from any part of the World? Please help. P. D. Angola

Hi, there. The most immediate one that I can think of is a service like Vodafone's mobile broadband solution. (V3 in Australia).

Basically, you have a BB account loaded into a sim card. you plug that sim card into a 3g enabled device (like a 3g Vodem Stick or a 3g cell Phone. There is also a 3g router that accepts sim cards, too.)

you then connect to that device.
-If it is a vodem, it plugs into your PC directly.
-If it is a cell phone, you can use the usb cable, or Bluetooth if your PC has it (you can by BT dongles from dealextreme.com for $2)
-the router will connect wirelessly to a notebook, or plug in with an ethernet card.

there are a couple of things to consider:
BIG ONE:

\Cost.
you will need to check with Vodafone/ or your said supplier, but data roaming charges are likely to apply. usually expensive. (it depends on what you will be doing with it, how much you wil use it, etc)

the device:
it needs to be unlocked for all countries, wideband (prefferably quad band) and probably wants to include the 3.5g technology/900mhz. This is known as extended coverage network, or rural broadband.
It also needs …

I have seen a lot of these turn up recently. I have been wondering who to show them to. The Admins I know (cscgal & Jbennet) don't seem to be around much at the moment. I IM'd them about some guys posting about Random products. VERY good tutorials (they are ususally pretty dodgy), but obviously some kind of spamming.

they usually have:
1. Newb poster
2. 1-5 posts, total (all of them for products for one company)
3. No feedback or Rep Points

4. Active Links in the post
5. Interesting, cryptic or high priority posts
6. high views, very few comments
7. Plus, when you have seen it a few times, you just 'get the feeling...'

try anvir task manager pro. (the trial version is fully functional)
and disable everything that starts up. then reboot. then enable the ones you want, one at a time.

it is going to take some time to start up because of our CPU useage.

what you could do to start is find out which programs are slowing you down...
press
alt-ctrl-del
all together
-you want task manager.
go to the processes tab.
click on the word CPU in the coloumn headers. 1x so the smallest process first, 2x makes the biggest process first.

that will tell you a bit about what is eating you.
you can end them in that window, highlight the program and end process. you will get a warning with each one. each one you remove speeds up your pc but is shutting something down, shut down the wrong one and your PC reboots, but no harm comes of this. it is safe to do. anvir does the same thing, but is more powerful.

<snip>

Most people already know about GAOTD.
Most people don't need to recover photos. and if they do, they need to recover more than just photos, so they go with easeus disk recovery or similar.

in short, nobody cares
in truth, I don't care.

Let us know when something VALUABLE, that you can't get a decent FREEWARE for comes up, like acronis trueimage, or easeus disk recovery, or paragon virtual, (oh that's right, they have already done those...)

do this:

in the circle, blue is used, pink is free, if it is all blue, you have a problem.

it means your computer cannot process any more data because it cannot write object references to the HDD.

if so, get back to me and we can work out a solution for you.

Use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.
Method 1: Make sure that you have sufficient hard disk space
First, make sure that you have sufficient hard disk space. The Stop error can be caused by insufficient hard disk space.

If you can use safe mode or the Recovery Console to start the computer, delete any unnecessary temporary files, Internet cache files, program backup files, and files that contain saved file fragments from disk scans (.chk files). You can also install Windows XP on another hard disk that has more free space.

NO NO NO!

abu taher is on the right track.

Listen.

I can give you the passwords that you need. But first, do THIS:

unplug the power.
Take the side off your PC.
Look around for a little, flat, round battery.
take it out.
wait AT LEAST 30 minutes.

plug it all back together and try again.

it is your BIOS or CMOS password that you need, not your windows one. doing the above wipes the cmos memory.

if it does not work, then I need to know what BIOS you have, then I can give you the correct password. is it
PHEONIX
ATM
AWARD
or one of many others? it should tell you near the top of the screen.
Company and version.

it will say before that password shows up, up the top of the screen.
if you do not see it, it is because your monitor is not warming up fast enough... so turn the PC on, let the monitor warm up, then reoot the PC really quickly, before the monitor can turn off.

let me know how that goes.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

when you get a "'PXE-M0F Exiting PXE ROM message" you are booting to PXE through bios. Turn off Network booting in bios entirely, and make sure that in your boot sequence, cd rom and hard drive are first. Network should be last in the boot sequence or not enabled at all.

So again, Go into Bios, and turn off Network booting. Make sure that your boot sequence goes cdrom-->hard drive. When you get a PXE message it's because you have network booting enabled.

That's how it is done, kids. Thank you Sucka. an intellegent answer, especially for a first post! I feel pity for all those poor sods that re installed windows before your post... :-(

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

you seem to have tried all of the keys, except the right ones: try tapping f8. it will get you to the safe mode option (if your pc gets as far as windows). if not, then maybe your hard drive is on the way out.

If you can't get safe mode:
can you see your hard drive in the BIOS?

usually by pressing f1 f2 or del at start up.
then look around until you see a list like:

IDE Primary
IDE slave
IDE Primary
IDE Slave
SATA Primary...
etc etc

there you should see at least 2 devices - your cd /dvd and your hard drive.

get back to me on your results.

do you have another PC you can put it in to access it (to make sure it is working?) then we can walk you through how to do that, and a recovery.

YUP.

Bad sectors on the hard drive. which means your PC can't read it's instructions, which means you need to move them.

you need to run chkdsk
there is plenty of info around on how to do that.

basically, safe mode.
then go
start-my computer,
rclick c:\ -properties
go to tools tab
error checking
click auto fix errors,
okokok your way out of there,
reboot, hope it gets far enough to start chkdsk,
go make a green tea (work on your Zen patience, this is going to take a while.)

check something:

in some bios, you can set them to boot to either the native vga port, a pci card, or an agp card. I don't know if this is so in your case, but get in there (I think you might know how, but if not, let me know and I will explain it) and have a hunt around for it. it might not be there, but it might be.

have you checked the cables? to the monitor? they might not be working? have you tested the monitor on another PC recently? have you tested the gpx card, also? silly questions, but it pays to check these things FIRST...

I have a cat.5E crossover cable. I'm working with a laptop running XP at 32 bit and trying to move files to a new desktop with Vista home at ^4 bit.

It is basically the same except that in vista to get to your work group you go:
start-rclick my computer-properties
computer name (etc) - change settings....

and to get to the ip settings of your device -

start-network- (in the quicklinks near the top)- network and sharing center
then on the left hand side, change/manage adapter settings (or similar)

there is an answer,

but you are much better off looking for, and using the "file and settings transfer wizard" in xp. in start-accessories-??? somewhere I think.

here is a tutorial:

then put the file onto dvd, etc. then click on the file in vista.

You don't need to reinstall the player after deleting those keys. but you might need to either "search for new devices" in device manager, or reboot the PC.

The keys will automatically repair themselves upon first use of the DVD / CD, etc...

it usually comes up as code 41 ->
I have a forum that discusses it, but it is full of popups and rubbish you have to sift through.

This seems to be caused by, or happens some time after an install of itunes 8 or lower. have not had it with itunes 9 yet.

if you need any further help, please ask me :-) (or the other guy that mentioned those filters /registry keys first)

HI KIDS!!!

It is a known problem with XP SP1, and possibly SP2. Happens very rarely, but seems to have happened a lot more in recent times. I fixed it by updating XP... here. (sorry guys, you must be using internet explorer to go here.)

The only thing is that the opposition at this stage also supports the filter at the full extent. I wonder if that kid who cracked the governments first filter in half an hour will crack this new filter in a few minutes. That would be funny. In cause your not sure what the first filter was, it was an optional client side filter which the government was trying to spread.

maybe, but probably not.

You see, the client side one you refer to was a piece of software in the background. basically a mini localised firewall with a few specific rules. it would be easy to bypass this kind of thing, clientside.

if it is installed server side, it is a whole other game. not saying it can't be done, it is just easier to get around something you can see than it is to get around something you can't literally 'sit in front of'

besides. all ou have to do it run through an USA external proxy and you can bypass any set of filters. I say USA because they tend to be the most liberal (read: morally ill- inclined) and filtering internet results is a crime against their constitutional freedom.
