Okay, since the issue has been taken care of, I'm marking this thread as solved.

Check Device manager and make sure that the Display Drivers are installed properly and that no devices have a yello exclamation mark or question mark next to them. Just to be sure, download the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI's web site and install those to see if the issue is resolved

A discussion with people, including Moderators is always welcome. However, arguing just for the heck of arguing is bordering on the line. The mods here are to ensure that the rules of the community aren't violated and that we can make this community one where everyone feels free to ask anyone for help. To achieve that end, it's paramount that all discussions be kept within the confines of the rules. Discussing people's personal lives is not acceptable. Just because this is the Cofee House and that we can discuss any topic does not mean that we discuss inappropriate topics.

Right click on the desktop and then click Properties. In the Display properties window, click the "Desktop" tab and then click the "Customize Desktop" button. In the new window that pops up, select "Internet Explorer" and OK your way out of Display Properties.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

This could be an issue with the keyboard too. Do you have a wireless or wired keyboard? Did you check the k/b on another computer? Did you check another k/b on this computer? What we need to do here is isolate the point of failure. Please try these steps and get back to us.

In the mean time, you can use the OnScreen Keyboard to enter the pasword. To bring up the OSK, at the login screen, press <windows>+U

Cheers

try downloading a AntiSpyware program like Spybot-Seach & Destroy. But for now what you can do it hold the CTRL+ALT_DELETE key (TaskManger) and find explore.exe and hit end task! WAIT that takes away the bottom bar of the screen right? Well no worry hold down CTRL+ALT+DELETE and this time go to File > New Task and type explore.exe and that SHOULD cure that for your windows user log on time.

The file name is explorer.exe. (Note the trailing 'R')

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Yeah. Even if you use a software like Daemon tools and mount the image, you will be able to access the files, but won't be able to boot off of it. However, once you do mount the DVD image, try running the Setup program from within Windows and see if you can install Vista.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try running the Dell diagnostics. Press F12 when you see the Dell Logo and choose "Boot to Utility Partition" from the Boot time menu. Once it loads up, click on Express Test and then choose Video or Graphics. Let me know what the results say.

I was able to open the link. The icons he's getting are the ones default in Windows 2000. It could be an issue with the Display Drivers. Try reinstalling the display drivers....

Did you try Display Properties to restore your icons? Right click on an empty area of the desktop and click on properties. Click on the Desktop tab and click the button at the bottom called "Customize Desktop". In this window, click on the icon for "My Network Places" and click the "Restore Default" button. let us know if this helps. Also, check to make sure the colors are set to atleast 16 bit color.

It is basically a popularity contest. The super mod comes up with your name in the MOD forum, other mods voice their thoughts regarding your work and attitude and many other things. If you earn a majority, you are in. So keep posting and wait for the time when vacancies arrive:mrgreen:

Also, you have to bribe the Super Mods big time. That's the only way they even consider you...either that or I've been ripped. :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Use your Windows XP CD to boot into Recovery Console. In there, type chkdsk /r C: to run a thorough check on drive C:

Or, you can run the same command in a command prompt window.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

That message you got could point to a disk failure, specifically a bad sector, although it's not definitive. Tis error is also seen if you shut down the system improperly. Just to be sure, run a check disk with a surface scan on the hard drive. About the sytem running slow, try running an adware scan on the computer.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I'd recommend that you get a 400Watt PSU for your configuration, with atleast 17Amp rating on the +12V rail. This will ensure that the system does not face power woes.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Have you tried checking the drive on a nother computer? It's possible that some parts of the DVD (specifically the part retaining to copy protection) may have gone bad. If this is the case, the only recourse would be to get the drive serviced or getting a new drive

I'd like to add that disabling SMART is not recommended. SMART monitors your Hard drive for any impending failures and alerts you in advance if it detects anything abnormal with the drive. I strongly recommend you keep SMART enabled.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If FDISK isn't able to delete the partitons, use the debug command to delete the partitions. Boot to DOS mode from the Windows CD and at the prompt, type 'debug' and press enter. You should now see a hyphen instead of the prompt. Then type the following commands: (Text in Bold is what you need to type out)

-F 200 L1000 0
-A CS:100

xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80

(If you want to delete partitions on the second hard disk, type 81 instead of 80. If you have only one disk, use 80

xxxx:010C INT 13
xxxx:010E INT 20
xxxx:0110 (Leave this line blank and press the <Enter> key)
-Q

You should then get a message saying "Program terminated successfully". Now, reboot and then use FDISK to create partitions and then try to reinstall Windows.

Hope this helps. Get back to us if you need more help.

Only make sure your motherboard has the SATA ports. Also, could you elaborate on what serious trouble you ran into when you tried to switch before?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

WPA will work if you image the HD and use it on the same computer. If you attach this HD to a diff computer, it will not work

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try uninstalling and reinstalling MP10. I'm guessing that this is an issue with the WMP being corrupt.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Download memtest86 and run a complete scan of your system's memory. I think that this is an issue with bad memory. un a scan and then get back here.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

GAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH. Sacrilege Davey. You broke his confidence!!!! hehehehe

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I have to agree. Guys, this is an online collaborative community and we take pride that this is great place for everyone. Such language and topics will not be tolerated. Please keep this in mind

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I still think this to be an issue with the DVD drive itself. See iif you can get it replaced, esp if its under warranty.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Could be spyware issues. Try scanning your system and see if that helps. Otherwise, try resetting Winsock and see if that helps. To do that, go to Start>Run and type 'netsh winsock reset catalog' and then restart when prompted.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

i remember i once had an XFiles theme loaded in Win98, in which when you shut down the system, the sound would play 'They're shutting us down, Scully'. Now THAT was cool

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Sheesh! Talk about blowing your own horn...

...and a big, HUGE horn at that:)

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

if the HD is not seen in the BIOS, then theres no way its gonna boot up. Are you sure youve plugged the power cable tightly? Also make sure the data cable is plugged in tightly...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You need the XP CD to knowck off Linux. However, I dont think this is an issue with linux. Try running a repair install of XP and see if that resolves the issue...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

One more effective (but slightly complex) way to ban certain websites is to modify the hosts file.

Open the file "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" in notepad. Now, suppose you want to ban www.samplesite.com, just type in the following at the end of the file

127.0.0.1 www.samplesite.com

You can block as many sites as you want with this method. the only way around this would be to modify the hosts file again. To prevent that, set up a limited user account for your son and use NTFS access permissions to deny his account access to the Windows directory. This isn't a foolproof method, but it should get you started.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Since you said that the comp restarts when under load, I'm inclined to think that this is a heating issue. Try running the computer with the side open and a fan blowing air inside it. If the restarts stop, then it's definitely a heating issue and you need to add a few more fans in it. Also, if the system has dust in it, try cleaning that out too...

Also, if you install mem modules of diff speeds, both the modules will run at the speed of the slower module.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If the usage was high only when you played the game, then thats perfectly normal.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Also to put your mind at ease, 62 degrees is a safe temp for the CPU. As long as it doesnt touch 80-90 degrees, youre fine.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

No, you cannot use both DDR and DDr2 simultaneously on boards which have both the slots. You can use either DDR or DDR2 at one time. I guess this should answer your second question.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

To answer your question, you can upgrade the REM only if theyre the same type. You cant use DDR RAM for DDR2 or SD for DDR. You can upgradr diff capacities and frequenxies of the same type of RAM

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You say you set the voltage selector to 220 Volts. What's the voltage you get at the wall outlet? You could try getting a new PSU to check if the board is fine. You also said that everything got real bright. Was this on the screen or was there a bright flash? If it's the latter, it's possible that your board shorted out.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Boy o boy o boy. This guy seems to have had some real bad experiences with IE or he's an ex microsoft employee dying for some payback.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

It's quite surprising, considering MS registered windowsvista.com immediately after they announced the name of the OS then code named "Longhorn". Ah well. These are some of the best things in life.

I concur.
