Hey all,

Just a quick note to let you guys know that I've been made Moderator of the Techtalk/Windows, Hardware and the Geek's Lounge section. This is a great opportunity and I'm glad that the work I've put in so far has been noticed by the other mods and Admins.

Once again, thanks DaniWeb team. Any suggestions/tips will be most welcome.

Cheers

Try running the 32 Bit Dell diagnostics. When you power on the system and see the Dell logo, press F12 to get to the One Time Boot Menu. Once there, select the last option that says "Boot to Utility Partition". When you do this, the Dell Diagnostics will launch with 4 options: Express Test, Extended Test, Custom Test and Symptom Tree". Select the third option that says Custom Test. In the next window, select the "Hard Drive" option and click on Run Test. If this test reports any errors, contact Dell and they'll be able to help you from there.

To ensure that the drive itself is fine, try using the Windows built in CD recording s/w to burn a disc. Insert a blank CD in the drive and open a My Documents window. Right click on any file, point to "Send To" and select "CD-RW drive". Once you do that, you'll see a popup at the bottom right of the screen that says "You have files waiting to be written to CD". Click that baloon and in the wizard that pops up, follow the on screen prompts. If while doing this you receive an error, reply to this thread with the exacts error message and we'll go from there. If this process is successful, the drive is fine and the issue could be with the recording software (Nero, Roxio, Sonic etc).

It's not possible for a CD ROM drive to read DVDs. CD ROM drives can only read CDs, CD-RW drives can read AND write CDs, DVD ROM drives can read CDs and DVDs, while DVD RW drives can read and write both CDs and DVDs...Who is the manufacturer of your drive and what model is it? Let us know and we'll be able to help you out...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Wait for me, mate. Lemme put on my wig. About time it got a haircut too...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Its possible that while pushing the cord initially, you have broken the soldering holding the port in place. Try the cord on another similar computer to eliminate that as a point of failure. Also, take your computer to an authorised Toshiba Service Center to get the issue fixed.

Try explaining the lipstick stains on your shirt and neck!!!!

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Hey all

Ive had an argument with my batch mates. They say that a floppy drive is an IDE drive. I say it is not. Can any of you guys confirm which of us is right? Thanks

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

wait a sec...is that iexplorer or iexplore? iexplorer is some kinda spyware. Internet explorer would be iexplore (without the 'R' in the end)

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

For an SP2 system, the command is

netsh winsock reset catalog

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If all you want is one partition on the external HD, you dont even have to delete the partition. The disk already has one NTFS partition. From theright click menu in disk management, just select the 'format' option and follow the onscreen prompts

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If youre sure youve set the BIOS to boot from the CD first, then in all probability, the CD isn't bootable, which means it's an illegal copy. Get a copy of Windows XP from the store and try booting off of it.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

try disconnecting the CD drive and see if the problem is resoled. If it is, its the CD drive at fault. Also, see if the drives are detected in the BIOS

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Why not contact Dell Tech Support? They'll be able to guide you as to how to go about this problem.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I'd first check the wall outlet, since you say you're getting an electric shock. Plug the computer into another (working) wall outlet and see if the system powers on.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try powering the system without any RAM modules. If the board gives any beep(s) then the board is fine. Next, take any one RAM stick and plug it into the slot and then turn the system on. If this doesn't work, then put the stick into the other slot. Keep doing this with all the slots. Then repeat the procedure with the other RAM stick. Let us know if this helps.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Since the Core 2 Duos are new, they are expensive. If you're on a budget, stick with AMDs

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If your HD is a SATA device, you may need to provide the SATA drivers during Windows setup. These drivers will be on a floppy which came with your mother board.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I would guess that there's a problem with the board. One way to verify this is to take your RAM stick to another computer and see if it's detected properly. Then, get a known working module and install it on your computer. See if the problem recurs. If it does, try flashing the BIOS. If after flashing the BIOS the problem recurs, get the board changed.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

If it's a USB device, the dialog box will come up only the first time you plug in the device. Subsequent plug ins will NOT display the dialog box.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I have used the mac for a while and I must say I did not find it impressive or worth the hype. The interface was good, yes, but nothing worth all the hype that surrounds it. The iBook G4 I used looked cool, but the OS itself was ok. Personally, I think I'll stick with XP.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You're prolly right. I am using iTunes on Windows. Maybe it isn't optimised for Windows. But then again, I use it to sync my iPod only, and not as a regular Media Player...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Well, it is possible that your other partitions may have gotten corrupted. Try booting to recovery console and try running chkdsk /r from there. If this does not solve your issue, you may need to give your HD to a professional data recovery company.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I dont think laptops have SATA drives (may be wrong though). If this is the case, it's possible the lappy's HD may have crashed or a cable may have come loose. Tighten the data and power cables and see if the drive is being detected...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I kinda dislike iTunes though. Really slow and sluggish. That's not to say WMP is the bestest media player, but I find it significantly faster than iTunes.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Dont take a chance...I'd advise you to buy the card from the same manufacturer. XFX is a good brand

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Isn't that called 'innovation' ?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

under the option "When I close the lid of my computer", there should be 4 options: Shut down, restart, hibernate and stand by. Choose whatever you want the computer to do.

If youre talking about how to resume from hibernation, just opening the lid should bring the computer out of hibernation. Otherwise, just press the power button.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You can't knock it 'til you try it, I guess

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

All right, Dani. Give. What are the user titles? ......please?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Does anyone here know if a Flaming Mo exists? Love to try that out hehehehehe

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Limewire itself may not be illegal, but using it to share copyright material definitely is. It's like saying 'A gun isn't legal, but using it to kill someone definitely is'

depends on how person defines legal ! there is nothing wrong with useing limewire its just a music share program if it were that illlegal the feds would shut it down feel free to use it i belong to a gosple hub down load videos cds all the time :):):!:

Downloading video CDs (Movies, music) etc definitely is illegal. Not to worry though. I keep doing it too, though I use Direct Connect

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Dude...you opened a new drive? You just voided the warranty for it. If you were having problems with the drive, you could have just taken it back to where you bought it from and got a replacement. OPening a device voids its warranty....

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Are your IDE drives being detected in the BIOS? If yes, then the board should be fine and your computer will boot off of the Windows CD. Try the usual checks though. Power and data cables tightly attached to the drives and the board.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

The only bottleneck I would say is if you have an IDE hard drive. If it's SATA, then no issues. However, what make are your RAM modules? What's their clock speed?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Im not sure if your BIOS will be able to use more than 32gigs without a BIOS upgrade.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I prefer to give my full attention to the game sounds. Thats not to say that I mute the ingame music too. I love the ambience the music creates during the game...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

remember that formatting will delete all data stored in it.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

The fault does not lie in the PC. It's a problem with your wall power outlet. You need to get an electrician to fix the problem.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

No it isn't. Make sure the wall outlet you have plugged the system into is properly earthed....

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I agree. Considering you're putting together such a beefy system, it'll be worth your while to invest in a high power and good quality PSU. Im not sure of a model, but PSUs from Antec are really good. I suggest you get a 550 Watt PSU at the very least for your system...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You will notice that the shut down dislog (when using the welcome screen) has 3 options -- Stand By, Turn Off and Restart. When this box is displayed, press the <shift> key. The Stand By option will turn to Hibernate. This is not an abnormality..it's just how Windows XP is. About your laptop, you see the hibernate option, but not the Stand By option. In such a case, you wont be able to put the system on standby.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You could disable System restore and re enable it. That way, all old restore points will be dleeted, and windows will create a new one for you. This should clear a significant amount of space..

FYI, system restore files are found in the \System Volume Information folder.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Well, since you say that explorer and system.exe are the processes taking up the CPU time, Id suggest you run a virus scan first. It's possible that these files may be infected. Also, kill all unnecessary processes in Task Manager and then try running the game. See if these suggestions help and let us know...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I am NOT calling you over to my place. ever

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I'm not in favor of killing civilians at all. I'm pretty sure about that. However, I have realised that terrorists will stop at nothing to spread their wave of hatred, intolerance and extremism wherever they can. In this context, a peaceful solution, though preferred, is not feasible. What do you think we ought to do? Wait?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Wouldn't that lead to reduced batt life?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

are the sound card drivers installed properly? also, is your new sound card selected as the default playback device?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

And you should be brought down hard too. There's no way you can get rid of terrorists without involving multiple times more civilian casualties if you are thinking of a military solution. If you side with an option that involves the death of innocent people you are no different from the terrorists you hate so much. Hatred breads hatred. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

So what do you suggest? Keep on having negotiations while the terrorist schmucks destroy the world? Do you honestly believe that such people consider anything apart from violence? You can't sit with these guys on a table and tell them "Hey, you shouldn't attack us." Sure, we can try...once, twice but not the third time. Look at the situation in Kashmir...even though during partition, Kashmir came to India (by choice), militants have been actively enforcing terrorism in the valley. Every day you hear reports about mass murders perpetrated by these militants. You think they're going to sit and talk? No way. The only solution is to stomp em out.

Look at the situation in the UK. I agree Mr. Blair's policies are a tad over the top, but that does not give anyone (least of all some wily little thug) the right to kill people. If they continue terrorising the world, I'm pretty damned sure the world is going to retaliate.
