caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

go here[C:\Documents and Settings] on the c:\ drive and you will see all added users plus the admin acount .this is whre all mydocuments folders are stored for each user .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

when you install winxp it creates a admin account and a user account with admin rights .,if i were you i would backup any important file and then you could delete all users i nthe control panel ,except the original ,you will not see the admin account that was created when winxp was first install ,just created user accounts .

Wow you guys sure know this stuff! Can someone help me with the same question. I have a AMD Athlon XP-1700 1.46 Ghz currently with 256MB. It has 2 slots. I would like to get it up to 1 GB. 512 would even be nice. the Bios is ASUS-a7n266-VM ACPI-Bios (if that helps). I looked at the current RAM installed and it says DDR266 256MB, but looking at frys.com I dont see anything like that.

Please help.

ddr266 is also called PC2100 ,check frys here .
http://shop4.outpost.com/%7BnOGK9nO6VyIY6HLJTN6P+w**.node1%7D/search?search_type=regular&sqxts=1&query_string=pc2100&cat=&submit.x=8&submit.y=11

info on this site shows that the boards max is 1 gig ram ,so you have 2 slots ,that means 2x512 , so don't buy a 1 gig stick ,you need to buy 2 512 sticks to get to 1 gig ,

should not occur after format if you did a full format and reload of winxp . stuck keys on keyboard maybe . check the f11 key for one ,not sure what other key combo will do it

hmmm, couldn't upgrading firmware be a simpler solution??

giving that a bad or update with the wrong firmware or computer shutdown in the middle of the update ,could ruin the dvd drive ,i will have to say no!it is much easier to uninstall the device

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I do greatly appreciate all the input. It did help me to easily hook up. Thank you all.
Giddyup

good to hear all went well !

link to spyware ,viruses and other nasties .when you get there you will see start a new thread ,on the left side above all the post there .as for reply /quotes usage, if you just want to make a general reply to a topic you would use reply, if you want to make a comment on a single post in the thread ,you use reply with quote so the people know what you comment is for ,something like that

thanks mate, u r really a helpful..
will try as suggested or will rma the monitor as i have myself bought a new one infact before creating a thread here.....
Cheers!!

with the new monitor installed you can make the changes to the computers settings ,then install the old monitor to see if it works better .

if you get no help from them you could always just use XP

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

is it worth my time contacting tech support on this matter ?

yes, or even consider sending it back to Toshiba or who ever you bought it from .Wait to long and the guarantee will be up when it dies completely

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

did you try hooking the laptop to a regular computer monitor .to see how it behaves .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

computer display settings is higher than the monitor can handle,.
when computer starts to boot up start hitting the f8 key to go into safe mode, when you get there right click on the desktop and go properties /settings and change screen resolution to 800x640 ,save settings and Reboot computer .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

try uninstall drive in device manager and reboot to reinstall the drive ,also make sure that the disks are not dirty

CHKDSK /R usually does absolutely nothing.I have tried that many times in the past, but can not provide any kind of help.I tried last known good configuration and all the other choices on the same screen but nothing happened. Is there any way to disable rebooting, in order to see the BSOD message?I have another partition with Win OS,so I can see the damaged partition from "outside", but this doesn't usually provide any kind of help, as far as I know.Is there any chance to solve the problem, if I manage to see the message on BSOD?Thanks.

did you try the f8 option and disable the auto reboot .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

OK, now I see what CaperJack was saying. What do I do about reinstalling all my apps that were purchased as single-PC licenses? Does this require me to buy a new license for all those apps? Ouch!

when you purchased and downloaded them ,you should have saved the executable file, and the key ,in a special folder , if you did so you can just copy that folder to the new drive, and then reinstall the programs .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague
caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Did you finish your message? It seems to end mid-thought.

no i figured you would be able to figure out the rest once you got that far ,sorry

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

first ,the old apps if install on the old drive will not just transfer and work on the new drive ,transfer of you own personal data is about all you will get .
to format and remove the xp type this into run."compmgmt.msc" without the " and then go to disk management ,.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

your problem is not likely with spyware but with a driver/hardware conflict ,what usually fixes 8e stop error for me is to boot to winxp cd go to the recovery console and do a , chkdsk /r
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i didn't read all your post! im in a hurry sorry .
but to install or unistall IE ,go t ocontrol panel ,add and remove programs andon the left side click on add and remove windows components ,IE is in the list ,first uninstall it then reinstall it ,you may need the winxp cd to do this .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

try, chkdsk /r ,in the recovery console .
not sure what extra problem you could have cause by doing a fixboot if it wasn't really needed .also hitting f8 on startup instead of going to safe mode chose disable reboot on system errors its in the list ,this will show a bsod longer .,also did you try last know good configuration on the same screen as safe mode .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Thanks.

I was surprised to find "my documents" still in tact all though everything else on the computer was gone.

.

never heard of it and cant see how it could be ,if you formatted and reloaded winxp ,and everything was gone but mydocuments ., can't see how that could be !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

also is the harddrive new, and maybe not formatted yet .and if possible changed jumpers on both the hdd and dvd rom to cable select and the drive should be able to go in the middle plug on the ide cable .if not just master one and slave the other ,a haddrive can be slave to a dvd drive !,also make sure that the ide cable is 80 wire and not 40 wire .

not positive but ,i don't think that the win98 fdisk can format a 500 gig hdd ,to big !!
also think you need to go into setup/bios and disable the raid first .
best thing is to use a utility from the hard drive maker to setup and partition the drive first ,find it on there web site .
don't forget that win98 need to be formatted fat32 and xp can be either ntfs or fat32 but ntfs is more stable for xp.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yeah ,mine all changed like that one time too,not sure why ,but i just change the view to thumbnail and i can see all

your welcome

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yes you are right, thats exactly what I did. I was trying anything because my screen image was massive and I couldnt choose another resolution. I am trying to fine the driver for my monitor or video card, no luck at the moment.
Cheers for the advice.

thought so ,you don't need or shouldn't need drivers for the monitor .as for video drivers ,i use Everest to show me what stuff is built into my computer [and others as i fix and reload a lot of computer .]Everest can be found on www.filehippo.com, middle of the page near the bottom in the benchmark section

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I all ready tried taking back the file, I click properties and I don't even have any of the stuff it says I should.

And I burned the folder on to a disk, but the disk is corrupted. I thought I made that clear, sorry :(

Also when I click properties it says there is nothing in it, or 0%.

If I've lost my pictures... I don't know what I'm going to do.

And for your info, I'm not a "he" just to let you know.

ok not a he .lol
I re-read your first post and im still confused ,but remember im over 50 so the thinker is not what it use to be ,
anyway this part confuses me ,

when you say to my surprise the file were still there

do you mean on the computer hard drive after you reloaded windows .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

for his sake i hope you are not correct caperkack. because if he only copied, by creating a shortcut then he is in deep you know what. check the file that are saved on the drive and ensure that the little shortcut arrow is not on the files. and follow the advised nanosani post to take permission of the folder that your are getting assess denied on.

if you put the mydocuments icon on the desktop, using desktop setup it has no shortcut arrow ,but i have see people burn it to cd thinking they were burning there mydocuments folder .not so ,you need to go to documents and settings in the root of c:\ or use windows explorer to drag and drop it to a device

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Now that you are up and running you have to remember what is it that you did the last time to cause this black screen

looks to me like they disabled this device , in the monitor advanced settings ,no wonder it caused a black screen , right click on your desktop ,go properties /settings/advanced /monitor /properties .disable this device .my thought anyway ,if it was that would be a no-no

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

one more thing, what if i am just hanging the hdd without it being fitted into the case, maybe causing all the trouble?

not i good idea if the drive spinning ,if the arm hit the disk it will chip it .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

just in case you need to know before he returns i'll answer ?
just remove the safe boot switch ,a switch is this / and the command following it ,the one before the / are needed to boot windows .
,/SAFEBOOT:MINIMAL(ALTERNATESHELL)

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

sorry , only answer i have ,maybe someone else will have a suggestion .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

get Everest ,it will show you exactly what adapter the board used and then just search the net for driver . just look in network section or pci device section
http://www.filehippo.com/download_everest_home/

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you solved you own problem ,firefox works ,now you don't have to use the crappy browser called IE7 .just my opinion ,i use only firefox .
But if you must ,to me it sound like a browse plugin problem .maybe you don't have the right one .what program does firefox use to play the video . in ie 7 tools ,manage plugins it will show whats what . you may need to download proper player .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

see if you can go to safe mode and set correct setting .
get to safe mode by hitting f8 on boot up ,start hitting it as soon as you start computer and keep hitting it until you get to screen to chose safe mode .then arrow up to the top to chose safe mode .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

props to gerbil for actually trying to help, it was my video card that was stuffed,

you did good for someone who knows nothing about computers inside and out .nothing in you first post lead me to believe it was video.

you caperjack, you fat fucking nerd. Cheers

Im not fat .a little chubby maybe! !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you could post a log in the security forum it would be better for you ,i use to read logs but got away from it awhile back so i don't know the bad stuff any more , you do have a lot of 04's ,program that run at startup ,you need to stop some of them ,but you need to research them as to what you need and don't need .also hostfix would only take a few seconds as all it did was fix the host file by removing all un-necessary stuff , the 01's in the log .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

all i can say is there is nothing wrong with the link in post #2 to the security forum

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

will this cause me to lose data?

sorry, i should have explained it better ,NO data loss ,chkdsk check your harddrive for errors and the /r tell it to repair the errors its finds
