My first thought would be to open up the device manager (right click on "my computer" and choose properties... then click on the hardware tab. next click the device manager button.) Find the listing for the audio device, highlight it and right click it, then uninstall. It will most likely have a yellow exclamation point next to it when you find it.

Then shut the computer down. Open the case and physically remove the audio card. Put the case back on and fire it up. After doing that, look on the audio card itself and see if it has any identifying marks... Company name, card name, version, model number, etc. If you find something and know the company that made the card, then go to their website and download a current driver. If you don't know the company that makes it head to http://www.driverguide.com and register for a free account. After you to that, you can type any info you found on the card into the search and it will come up with a bunch of drivers. Try to find the one that matches your model number exactly. Find the driver and download it. unzip it onto a floppy disk if it will fit, if not, put it in a directory on your C: drive in it's own folder. You can name it "audio driver" or whatever.

Next, shut down the PC and take off the cover (unplugging the computer of course) put the audio card back in, …

I found this site because my daughter also had the Sims 2 for Christmas and, like nearly everyone else in the universe, she cannot play the game because we either do not have the necessary graphics card or don't have enough GHz on the computer. She too is really upset.

My eyesight isn't good enough to have seen the tiny warning at the bottom of the game case about "transform and lighting graphics adapter" whatever that is! I feel the company who make the game have mislead people and the warning should have been much clearer to understand.

The computer is only 3 years old and we have made sure the memory has been kept upgraded. It was the very best we could afford when we bought it and didn't expect it to get so much out of date quite so quickly. The computer has just come back from the workshop as I was hoping to have the graphics card upgraded. But it seems that even this wasn't enough to get this stupid game working. Now we've decided to sell the The Sims 2 and buy something which will work.

Sorry to moan without offering any help but I needed to get this off my chest!

Windows programs like paint word pad or something like that will be affected .. I did this trick first using system mechanic and then by altering registry ... and some of my default program shortcuts didnt work ... but I think windows automatically finds the programs if we dont cancel the search dialog.

I was not suggesting you move the default c:\program files ,My suggestion was meant for creating a new default install folder on another drive or partition .leaving the c:\ one right where its at ,the new one just for programs you installed after installing Windows !

I think the key here is that the files need to be converted to MP3's
I dont know of any player that will let you put in a audio CD and just drag and drop them to your MP3.

They need to be Ripped... Before you can use them...

I bought my daughter a Ministry of Sound MP035 1.5 GB Jukebox, but am stumped as how to download her music files on to it from CD or Windows Media Player. On WMP i thought i would have to go on "copy" and select the device in the drop-down menu, but the device doesn't appear there. We are running on Windows ME, and the software CD that came with the MP3 player apparently does not need to be installed unless you are running Windows 98 SE. Should I install the software/drivers anyway? Any ideas for a complete novice?

It should show up in mycomputer as a removal device .when you have it plugged into the computer ! If not then you will need to load the Drivers !
if it does you can just use wundows Explorer to drag and drop the mp3 onto it !.

I checked before I purchased the memory then double checked the manufacture's web site after I purchased and before I tried to install them and it is correct. I unplugged the computer and moved it to a non-carpeted location (kitchen table) to do the work. The only problem that I had was the bottom clips would not fit in the memory groove. They fit fine on top and seemed to be secure on the bottom but it was off just a frog's hair. I called the store earlier about the problem and they said just to come back and exchange them for 2 more.

Take the store up on there offer !

If the drive is attached to a running OS then it has some degree of vulnerability.

I would suggest you clone the drive with your base OS and drivers...

You could also create a compressed image of the OS if your base system is over 10gig...

You can physically unplug the data cable until you have a problem and want a backup or you can configure your coms to NOT autodetect and tell it you dont even have a second drive...

Just a couple of suggestions....

I personally have my base OS burned onto a DVD...
A clean fresh install takes less than 15 minutes...

I also have a linux partition that I keep an image of my base Windows OS on for safe keeping.

I also have two bootable livecd Linux OS, (Mepis as well as Knoppix)

Hope this helps...

Can i ask what program you use to burn /chost you os to dvd as this is what i would like to do the next time i reinstall winxp SP2 .

Caperjack,

Thanks a lot for answering my question. I have decide to add 2 128's of RAM to my system. I spec'd it out and found exactly what I need. We shall see if that speeds up the performance of my system. Then if needed I can add another 128 at a later time seeing that the max for my system is 384.

Tim

your welcom ,you may be able to upgrade the cpu without changing the mothereboard ,but unless you can go from say a 400 /450 to about 600/666 ram will be a cheaper upgrade for you

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

only thing i can say is make sure you have the master /slave settings correct on both drive on eack cable .
If you have the 2 drives on the primary cable then the old one will need to be master with slave ,and the new drive set slave ! if you have the local drive and the cdrom on the primary then you master the new on the secondary ,also make sure the new drive is partitioned and formated .if it not it will show in the bios but not in mycomputer .

Run msconfig;
uncheck all the startup items
uncheck all the services
Restart
Run your anti virus software. The torjan will get defeated.
(You cant delete the torjan since it is running.)
run msconfig again and check the startup and service items which you require.

Ive never tried that ,if you do uncheck all those things how do you get to you desktop if you disable all startups and processes !

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.
