I have heard this phrase a number of times in technical forums, but I have no idea what it means, or why you would do it. Can anyone enlighten me please?

hi,the bios hold all the info to tell windows how and what to use to boot the computer to windows ,it is a cmos memory chip, holding this info ,that can be re-written,[the flash] to solve a problem your motherboard is having with a new device, ect ect .not recommended to do a flash unless you are actually having a problem and your motherboard manufacture recommended a flash and has a updated one to fix the problem .

it is 2x2.6 ,but not really a total of 5.2 as each core works independently of each other , also make sure you have more than 1 ram chip as each core will perform better with its own stick of ram,or something like that .so 2 gig ram at least .2x1 gig for best results or even 2x2 =4 gig

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Ok, i think i have asked you too many questions, cause really you arent being much of a help anymore, like your getting annoyed, lol, oh well, thats what this is here for i thought, all good, thanks for your past help and i will most deffinately find elsewhere for help, the question i asked you in which you said "its just the way it is" i have asked a few others and they all had different solutions on why it might be doing that, and things i can do to try and fix it..Before you give more advice to people you really might wanna think about freshening up your computer knowledge, because when your on a forum giving people advice for almost any computer problem but dont have the knowledge of most computer problems all your doing is waisting peoples time and kinda being a fruad, you could give someone the wrong info and screw there pc all up.. I had a problem i asked you earlier in this forum, and what you said was completely wrong, i did whatever it was on my own and fixed the problem myself, well also had someone else help me with the same problem, i told them what you emplied for me to do and they laughed and told me i should really know or even look at other answers they have given others before taking advice from someone..Dont take offense to this, im not trying to be a jerk or anything, …

many things can cause your situation, maybe its the monitor that is not working ,hook it to you brothers laptop to test it !

Thanks for trying to help but I find your instructions quite ambiguous which means I will probably get myself in trouble if I try to follow them. Would you please rewrite your instruction using a step by step, in order of "to do's" and in point form. In other words, your new instructions if followed one after the other will result in a solution to this problem. Thanks again and I do and will appreciate anything more you can do for me.

maybe time to take to repair shop ,if you cant follow the simple instruction in post #2

might i add that you should/will likely need to add more ram and hard drive even ,add that to $100.00 + for a copy of winxp, there money might be better spent on a better used computer ,or even new computer .

If you can't get a hold of a live cd of linux, then just download the S.M.A.R.T. tests and put them on a CD and boot to test out your motherboard. It seems that your mobo is going bad.

i may be wrong or you may be talking about some thing else but s.m.a.r.t test is for testing harddrives

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you could also try to replace the MUP.SYS.
.

if it shows mup.sys then it loaded it ,its' the next file in the list thats' causing the stall, usually the video driver!!

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

I have one of those AC Adapters that doesn’t connect quite right unless you mess with it a lot… and this is the 2nd one I’ve had)

its most likely the power jack (soldered to the motheboard) that is the problem here and not the adapter

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I'dd add this to the list too.

lol, thats usually my job

yeah ,recovery cd's are a little harder to use , any winxp cd will be ok to use for the recovery console.if you can borrow one .but even the recovery cd should boot ! open computer case and make sure its not a overheating problem cause by dust buildup

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Sorry - 0x000000D1
My understanding is that it is a driver related problem, but I tried checking every driver I could find under Device Manager and could not find anything out of the ordinary.

hi, if you have a windows cd, boot to it and go to recovery console and do a , chkdsk /p/r

how to use recovery /

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

no need to bumb! you need to try a better psu first ,
also just for shits and whistles and not to confuse, its a ATX power supply with a P4 plug ,AT power supplies go way back to the 486 and early pentium computers.
I have seen this happen a few times now ,nothing working when p4 plug ,plugged in ,and it was the motheboard in all cases

If I took it to Electronic Fry's or some store similar to that, would they be able to do the job?

Not that many computer repair shops where I live.

not sure, only if they know how ,taking the laptop apart correctly is the big part of the job

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i had a Toshiba doing the same thing ,changed the cpu and power coard ,ram ,no different so we determined it to be motherboard and sold it for parts

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Is there any way to tell if the full motherboard needs replaced or if it's just the power supply/jack?

charge lite comes on makes me believe it not the bower jack,i think the live Linux cd is worth a try

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i have a gateway 450rog and when i push the power button the power light comes on and then goes off and there is a orange light that flashes right above the power button...where do i start?

Hi, could be a number of things ,cpu, motherboard ,ram, power cord ! and the list goes on!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

It was working alright at first, until I apparently moved the end of the cable that was attached to the computer. .

that sounds like the power jack broke/ or broke its solder joining it to the motherboard ,
either a new power jack or re-solder that one if its not broke!
either way its needs someone with know how to fix it !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

assuming you are running winxp ,both those features are problematic. try disabling them and all should be well!you will just use a bit more of your battery power!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Ditto

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I want to get a new graphics card, but I don't know if my motherboard only takes a certain kind of card. But is there somewhere I can go to look at what motherboard I have? And where do I go to see what kind of graphics card I have?

to see what mother board you have ,use this program ,run it and go to motherboard section and will give a name and a model number for most boards ,post the results back here and we will have a look for you .
download,unzip and run the .exe
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_150.zip

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I already tried using a different working AC Adaptor with it and it still didn't work.

Probably is the power jack. Know how I would go about fixing it?

I will assume that because you don't know how to fix it by looking at it ,that you should take it to a computer repair shop !
It may not even be the power jack ,it could be a number of things, processor ,motherboard ,ram,
when you plugged it in,did you plug it into the laptop first and then into the wall socked ,or wall socket first and then the laptop ,may have shorted out the motherboard ,im just guessing!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

this is the problem. my pc worked then it didn't..

that is what usually happens to all broken computers.
i also say bad power supply

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if the adapter shut off laptop then i suspect [shorted it out ]bad adapter, or power jack
