But the PGA478 CPU's I'm looking at is after all called a Mobile Processor, so shouldn't it be made for running in laptops?

should work then if its a mobile chip, do they say that the PGA478 is a dual core

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

not positive ,not sure of all the but i took a Mobile p4 478 out of a imb laptop and put it into a dell tower p4 478 and it works ,
i think for you the biggest problem would be heat ,as i think the PGA478 is for a well ventilated tower and the PPGA478 is[mobile or sentrino] for laptop and is designed to run cooler

I currently have windows xp and I am trying to install windows 7. As soon as I put the disc in it says entry point not found-setup.exe. Can anyone tell me what this means and how do I go about fixing it?

if you are trying to upgrade from winxp to win7 ,it will not ,you need to do a full install .so backup your personal files and boot to the win7 dvd and do a full install

Thanks. The repair bill for the noise problem (new video card and fan) was too high so purchased a new machine.

wow ,you got a new computer for the price of a replacement video card ! thats good ,i recently bought a new 512 agp card for 65.oo$ for my old P4

I am a bit fearful of updating the new bios because I don't want to ruin the programs.
What would you suggest.

if it goes wrong it won't ruin programs ,it could render your motherboard useless!
my suggestion, leave it to a professional

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hi, I was getting an intermittent high pitch hum from my PC as though something decided to kick in (fan?) with more revs. After replacing my 17 inch monitor (burnt out) with a new 19 inch widescreen, I now get the noise continually, and the text appears to be a lighter colour. Any clues anyone? I was thinking it's the video card with fan attached as maybe the video card can't support the bigger monitor, and cause the text to lighten.

lower the resolution on the video

I am aware that Fujitsu has released new BIOS update which is 1.21 E.

I would like to back up the whole system, plus a restore disk..

that the same thing ,
go to start /control panel/ click on ,back up and restore ,or if your control panel is set to category go to system settings and click on back up computer ,then create a system image ,this will be your restore disk ,not sure how many disk to use ,just buy a pack of disk

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I just purchased new computer with Windows 7 installed on it. I have to back up..but don't know what DVD to use DVD-RW or DVD+RW

what do you have to back up on a new computer ,anyway, either will work ,and you don't need to use dvd-rw's as dvd -r or +r will work also .
just incase you don't know rw means that the dvd is rewritable ,meaning you can reuse them ,
dvd-r or +r are write once only .
are you just backing up files or creating a win7 system restore disk

Thank you for your kind response...
I already did this many times before you had suggested. Even I'm not able to open task manager at this stage.

And I've already said that no bootable cd is working with my computer. Please help me if possible...

hi, had you said you tried that in your first post ,i would not have posted it ,thanks

After getting password it just remains idle for a longer time, only showing my desktop background.

at this point ,do alt+ctrl+del to bring up task manager go to file /new and type in explorer.exe, hit enter , see what happens

in my post # 4 you were to click on the link and then , i said to type in the search field "export mail ", you would of then got 9 results and i said to click on " import mail from other email program in the list" and you would have gotten instruction on how to show the tool bar in windows mail ,and instruction on going to file ,and how to export/import messages and accounts .then after you install win7 and windows mail you import what you saved .
you don't get to look at the saved mail ,you just save the files created to a thumb drive to import into msmail in win7 hope this helps ,good luck

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Your instructions are confusing as I do not have another e-mail program and in what list. I tried to export my windows mail folders into a folder which I created and each time, all e-mails wound up with a long number, as follows: 6AE7458A-00000003 next to each message with different values but the same length. The program blocked because I tried to export the messages numerous times and finally my account was cancelled and I had to create it again and then got some 1600 messages. In Windows XP e-mail messages are stored in application data or message store. I do not know where the message store is in Vista and in App Data I found Microsoft then Windows Mail and in Windows mail, I found all my folders, but why the long number and will it disappear when I export to the USB stick and then import into Windows 7??

I hope you have the answer.

Thanks.

Raya

sorry you find my instruction confusing .[my direction were for searching the help in the link provided ] go to the link in my other post and search on how to import export your mail .whats so hard about that , then link comes from windows mail ,when you open windows mail , click on help!

looking a bit more i see nice board you have ,in my dreams maybe ,one button overclocking ,any chance it needs to be started in regular speed first !weird thoughts i know

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

not ,sure ,but have you tried different ram, are you using 2x2gig or 4x 1 gig sticks .don't see you ram ram in msi list of tested ram
http://www.msi.com/uploads/test_report/TR10_1846.pdf

your ram=
RAM: Corsair Dominator 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMD4GX3M2A1600C8)

im no expert so just guessing ,1600mhz is overclocked ram,am i correct .
maybe you should try a stick of pc38500 -1066mhz

check your manual ,should have come with the board ,for correct ram settings ,maybe bios setting wrong and clearing it may help but only following manual instructions on how to clear or change to defaults

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I have tried replacing the cmos battery, took out the hard disk, wireless card all to no avail.

@rch1231
@ caperjack
with regard to the ram question you had look at the bench test results above.

ok

i assume from this question that its probably best i find a way of using mains power directly instead of from an extension lead

after 3 mnts anything is worth a try

I am planning to be using a DVI to VGA adapter so it will look like

i mention that because i just assumed you tried it out of the tower with it hooked to a monitor ,sorry for assuming , but i have i seen computer not boot because of dvi to vga adapter to a lcd monitor

It's a Dell Dimension 8300. The problem happens all the time and is getting worse. Screen goes black every few seconds. More freezes and desktop icons sometimes garbled with Microsoft Outlook folders for example. I'm afriad I don't know how to lower the resolution or colour depth. Can you run me through it. Many thanks.

don't know what version of windows you are using as you failed to say ,but usually right click on the desktop,go properties .advanced or display setting or something like that or customize ,screen resolution go from there to lower it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you should have got a manual with the analyzer ,the e8 e9 and all other codes have different meaning with different bios brands so you first need to know what bios is in your computer ,that said pc analyzers suck big time and are a waste of money trust me i bought 2 different one many years back

you can get manual here ,first find out what bios your computer has ,it will show on the first boot screen when you turn on the computer .

when you tried running it from inside the mb box ,did you have ram in it ,if so try without ram. also check your power source, are you plugging the psu into a power bar or extension of any kind.
also are you using any kind of adapter from video to monitor like vga to dvi or something

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you can do it with win7,go to start /control panel ,then click on back up and restore ,you get 2 option make repair disk or restore disk

How do I move or backup my e-mails from Vista to a usb stick and then restore them from the USB stick to Windows 7.

Thanks,

hi answer has more to do with what email program you are using than the fact that you are using vista ,

hey caperjack, thanks for your reply. i don't understand logs that good, for now that is. is it a rootkit probably that changes the accounts like that or what is it? new virus? it wouldv'e been awesome to fix it and post the solution though. ugh

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\FTA9DA.EXE
likely the cause ,and new maybe, that why google shows nothing on it .

Thanks for the reply. What's an lcd? Is that the monitor?
BTW, last night I unplugged the monitor and turned off the computer. This morning after some screen flashes and stumbling the monitor is now working. But this problem only seems to happen after the computer goes into hybernation/sleep mode.

sorry thought it was a laptop. yes lcd is monitor ,but now that i see its a desktop you likely don't have a lcd monitor .
all i can say is disable hibernation ,its something i never use or like anyway ,as its so erratic ,as you can see

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hey,

Along with the installation came a host of "Windows.old.0011-003 Files". Is it imperative that I maintain these files or can I safely delete them because they are cluttering up my system. It has taken 7 disk to complete a full backup. If its possible to delete these files, I would appreciate some direction as to how to accomplish this.

This is my first time participating in a forum. I trust I am in compliance with your rules.

Martbarn7

hi.if you backed up your personal data before the reinstall you should be OK to delete the windows.old folder created when you reinstalled vista

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

first let me say im no expert ,but there is no video input on the[mine anyway] laptop therefor no way of doing what you want to do with the old dead laptop ,in my opinion,or if there is it would likely be cheaper to buy a new lcd monitor giving the cheap price of them now

and lastly, a few years ago, I would have this system shutdown message appear around 20 minutes after each time I'd turn my computer on, and it would shut down in four minutes. a friend at the time told me that my hard disk had some deffect cuasing that to happen. now I think he was wrong. I must have had some batch file somehwere installed, right? although, he kept formmatting the disk continuously, but the problem persisted!!!

that was a virus of the day a few yrs back
