I have 1 CD ROM and 1 CD Writer. When I click on "Burn", it will eject the CD Writer and display a message saying "CD in CD ROM is empty".

Sudheendra

says its empty ,but you have a plank cd in it right ,
the Brand of you blank disk did you always use them or have you changed brands .sometime time burners are fussy as to the disk type being used .

even though i don't think it will help,as it wants to do a regedit ,and you don't have windows loaded yet, i will post the link anyway ,seems like it could be a bad cd-rom drive or bad burned copy of windows .

PS.Maybe you got some oil sands in the cdrom drive .LOL

Hi,

I use nero for burning the CD. I select the files, and click on "Burn". Then it will give me a message like "The CD ROM is empty".

do you have 2 cd roms in you computer,if yes check that the correct one is chosen as the current recorder on the burn page in nero

From your observations, whathas been deleted? Anything or Windows system stuff?

Interesting read! in my years of hooking up bad drives as a slave drive, internally and with usb device have i seen the good winxp start deleting "stuff" from the bad slave drive

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

and the edit button only last about 1/2 hr or so .

you could try the hard drive manufacture web site for a utility to run and setup the drive before windows install , like maxblast for maxtor hardrive ,they all have one!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i have had success with not even have to do a repair install of xp when changing a motherboard but only a couple of time ,same or similar motherboard chipset each time.
My suggestion to you would be to borrow a winxp home cd from a friend or co-worker! and try the repair install if you have too.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I'm really sure as nothing will work. When I try to format C even at the dos prompt it tells me I can;'t because programs are running. I exited all I can see,I'm not sure what or where to find what needs to be closed prior to format.

Ok. im only going to say it once more ,so listen good ,YOU CAN"T Format you hardrive with window running ,PERIOD.
you need to use the winxp CD-R to format the harddrive before windows loads..you need to take you computer to a computer repair shop!!!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I think what I may need to do is to reset the CMOS. I know in desktops I can remove the battery or flip a jumper switch...not sure how to do this in the laptop. Would upgrading the bios effect it? the num lock light is on and the Fn key isn't working.

when you boot the computer you can hit a key to get into the bios, and set it to default setting . i think f2 or f10 ,maybe

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

The system won't allow me to format "C" in safe mode. How can I force a format ?

you cant format a hdd when windows is running ,no matter what mode its in .you need to format a drive before windows boot, using the winxp cd.when you format a harddrive you lose everything on that drive.
are u sure you are in safe mode ,not just running winxp with out video drivers

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I tried to repair Windows and all it did was reinstall (in safe mode). I have even tried to format "c" but it won't let me because of the safe mode.
.

that makes no sense ,did you boot to you winxp cd and format the drive and then reinstall winxp.
Also when computers boot to safe mode you have to choose safe mode ,there should be other choices ,like ,last know good configuration.,how do you know you are in safe mode .,dose it say safe mode in the four corners

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i will give that a try. that is the only issue. I also tried uninstalling and re-installing the display adapter but that didn't help

did you check display adapters manufacturers web site for latest drivers

B"H
My daughter's laptop, Toshiba Portege 4010 has a keyboard (internal) that only the left side works. The Fn button is not working to turn off the lit num lock light. I thought that maybe if I reset the BIOS it my work. However, I am not sure how to do this or even if this is the correct route to go.

first ?,so only the left side works ,do the number keys on the right work!! maybe a default bios would help ,not sure thought , you usually have to hit delete key or f1, f2, f10,on bootup to get into bios.it sometime say when computer is booting, hit whatever ket to enter setup/bios.
It is possible the keyboard is broken you you need to replace it .
Maybe removing and cleaning or replugging it into the motherboard will help ,see link .

Hello,

Is it possible that I've just burnt out the metal connectors in the socket after years of heavy use?

Thanks in advance.

to me this is the most likely cause of you problem ,i have see and had this problem fixed for other,it involve buying a new connector and having it soldered to the motherboard .here locally we have a tv repair guy who will do it for about 30.00$ i supplied the parts ,i bought the new plugs on e-bay.

All thats required to reseat it is to make sure its plugged in completely right? just unplugging and plugging back I assume.

yes ,and the degree into which it has to be take apart you will see as you follow the steps from#1 on through until you can unplug the cable,
From looking at the pictures you may only need to do steps 10 and 16 to get at the cable .
Just remember it was someone else who said this might help you problem ,and not ME!! lol

hi i do think it would involve taking the laptop apart ,if you click on the link below and scroll to the bottom and go to page 3,picture #17 and click on the picture ,the flex cable is near his hand ,coming from the monitor to the motherboard

Hi bobbyraw,

1) The first fan inside the power supply that is directed at the back of the case produces very little air not like the normal fans although it revolves very quickly...what is the problem?

2) The second fan inside the power supply that is directed to the inside of the case doesn't revolve at all, so the power supply should be changed?

3) What is a system fan (not the CPU fan)? Where it can be located?

4)How to know if this heatsink works or not?

5) The BIOS tells me that both the CPU and System fan have 0 RPM although I can see the CPU fan revolving! so what is the problem as well

Plzzzzzz answer me in details

only one detail needed ,take the computer to a repair shop and have no-working fans replaced before you ruin your power supply and you motherboard and processor !!! HEAT Kills

you need to make sure the drive is formatted ,does it show in computer management ,disk management ,
go to start /run and type this in .
compmgmt.msc
go to disk management .and see if it there .if so right click on its reference and choose format .all this is assuming the drive is new with no data stored on it yet .

Hello,

I have just bought new HP Proliant ML150 Generation 3 Server without any OS. I have decided to install Win XP professional so I have inserted Win xp prof. CD and Windows installation started successful until I didnt recieve next message:

*******************************************************************************************************************************
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup can not continue. To quit setup, Press F3.
*******************************************************************************************************************************

I have searched many forums including DaniWeb but I still cant find solution;(

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance for promt replys!

Cheers;P

did you open the case to make sure there is a hard drive install in the tower ,if yes what type hard drive Sata or IDE ,if Sata you will need to hit f6 when installing winxp and install sata drivers so winxp can recognize you hard drive .the sata drivers are usually found on the motherboard disk that comes with a new computer .sata drives have a smaller usually red cable connecting them to the motherboard ,ide have 40/80 pin wide usually grey cable.

edit= did a google search and it has 6 bay sata .

what does CPU / System / NB FAN connectors stand for?
what are their uses? which connector is which fan type? (casing fan?)

CPU=central processing unit ,the computer processor chip, the hart of the computer !
System=system fan is a case fan used to remove hot air or bring in cool air .
NB-Fan= is a motherboard chipset fan.usually used to keep the northbridge chipset cool .
so the overall use is to keep the computer running cool!!
the connectors on the motherboard should be marked, when fans are plugged into the motherboard they are then monitored in the BIOS of the computer .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

maybe just take the old fan off and go to local computer shop and get one to match it .

I don't want to format the drive - it's already formatted. I want to know what the format is. I can search the drive by sector number, but I can't possibly look at all 700million + sectors to find directories. I believe there is at least one directory entry with bad data, but I don't know where to look.

over and over i read this and have to say i've never heard this ? before ,as to the format of NTFS ,to my knowledge its NTFS, NT file System, dose this hdd run,is it on a working computer .
chkdsk info ..
CHKDSK
chkdsk drive /p /r
The chkdsk command checks the specified drive and repairs or recovers the drive if the drive requires it.The command also marks any bad sectors and it recovers readable information.

You can use the following options:
/p : Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.
/r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

Note If you specify the /r option, the /p option is implied. When you specify the chkdsk command without arguments, the command checks the current drive with no options in effect.

When you run the chkdsk command, you are required to use the Autochk.exe file. CHKDSK automatically locates this file in the startup folder. If the Command Console was preinstalled, the startup folder is typically the Cmdcons folder. If CHKDSK cannot find Autochk.exe in the startup …
