Re: That's very strange. If you know of any robust, commercial-quality Java applet IRC clients, please do let me know.
Re: Here at DaniWeb, only members are allowed to view profiles, for example. If you were to use a backend scripting language such as PHP, you would be able to make it so that only members can see other member's contactinfo. That might be something you're not ready to delve into …

Re: Well let's see, there are 495 rabbits on an island. The next year, there will be 20% of 495 more rabbits. The year after that, it will be 20% of however many rabbits there are, meaning the number of new rabbits on the island each year will increase. Do you …

Re: Unfortunately, at this time, I am only accepting PayPal. I've found that it is the most reliable and dealing with other online payment processors has proved very very messy in the past. In the future, am thinking about introducing International payment solutions such as WorldPay, etc. For now, PayPal is …
Re: Reputation points are the equivalent of "karma" on some forums. Basically, they're kudos to a user for really valuable posts. If you think that a particular post stands out, you can give a good rep to its author or comment on it. If you find a post to be rude, …
Re: Ooh yay! So glad to hear that. Especially after our little mess last night. DaniWeb was actually down for about 4 hours last night due to an error on my part :( ... I accidently corrupted the database beyond repair. I luckily had a backup that was only two hours …
Re: Hmm, I don't know what msimn.exe is. I use Outlook, not Outlook Express, so I guess that's the correct exe. Question for you: does Internet Explorer ever crash on you? Do you use Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger by any chance? If not, try going into the Outlook Express preferences …
Re: Since everything here appears to be in one method, I get the impression that psylocke is brand new to Java and hasn't yet learned how to create multiple methods and classes. Am I right?
Re: An alternative is to use one of those toolbar generation utilities to create a downloadable toolbar that can be integrated into the Internet Explorer browser. (Ever use the google, msn, or alexa toolbar?) It can customize the homepage and add a bunch of links (and even forms) to IE.
Re: If you just want to password protect a section of your site, this can be done with an .htaccess file. However, if you want a full-scale registration / login type thing, you'll need to use a scripting language such as PHP.
Re: KDevelop is really nice ... Linux has a few nice goodies actually. However, it really depends what you want to get into. If you want to be a Windows programmer or study up on .NET languages, a linux IDE isn't going to help you a great deal. Alternatively, if you …
Re: I am a fan of Internet Explorer simply because I feel it's the fastest since it's so well integrated into Microsoft Windows. Of course this isn't as strong a case for Win98 as it is with Win2000/XP. I also like FireFox though.
Re: You post more ;) No, seriously, titles are based on the number of posts you have. It looks like right now you need 100 posts before you can be a "Techie Whiz". At 200 posts, you earn a star under your username.
Hey fellas. Unfortunately, I'm going in for some surgery on July 13th. It's actually nose surgery - I'd rather not get into details here in public but suffice to say I was born without a sense of smell nor the ability to breathe through my nose. For those of you …
People signed up today as techtalk members ... people have come and visited! But no one posted ??? So I think I'll volunteer as the first - even though the night is wrapping up to a close. Oh well, there's always tomorrow!
Re: This is, unfortunately, a dreaded part of living in the Microsoft Windows world. Explorer crashes can be due to a number of reasons - usually software conflicts, a corrupt registry, etc etc. Do you usually get the illegal operation error for explorer.exe only via Internet Explorer, or when doing other …
Re: .tpl is the extension for phpBB (www.phpbb.com) template files. It may also be used as templates for other software as well. In any case, the .tpl files must be placed in the templates directory within the phpBB software to be used - not accessed directly. Any file can be saved …
Re: Tuesday was my first day back :( I'm only going part time though, which means 3 hours a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Darn the work though ;)
Re:
One change that comes up to my head right away is the .caption (or .label, I can't even remember) property from many objects are gone. It's now all standardized on .text (like TextBox1.text = "Mike", Label1.text="John"). This change, although small, shows why .NET is better then VB6 - its all …
Re: I'm not really heavily into graphics and web design (and I guess my community reflects my lack of artistic interest quite unfortunately), but as I mentioned in my PM to you, www.yaxay.com is the only one I know of.
Re: Not that I know of, unfortunately. But, hey, I'm from L.I. ;)
Re: This is the exact point that Dr. Liang brought up in Programming Languages class yesterday. The higher the level of abstraction the more overhead there is. That's why OOP languages weren't developed sooner ... older hardware wouldn't have been able to handle dealing with the layer of abstraction they provide.
Re: Definitely. What you're suggesting is what the book reviews forums are there for. They are not meant to be a place to simply post links.
Re: The amount that your reputation increases is based on the reputations of the people who gave you comments. If people with reps of 10, themselves, gave you kudos, your rep won't increase by much.
Re: Thanks so much for the news Donna! I've been waiting for this one big time. My backlinks went from 100 two months ago to 600 the last update. I'm really hoping for a PR6 now. I just did a link:www.daniweb.com and now I'm showing up as having over 2,300 backlinks …

Re: Nope, sorry. Have you checked out www.newegg.com? I'll usually buy from newegg or from www.cdw.com or www.buy.com
Re: Thanks so much :) I'm really glad that you're enjoying yourself!
There have been a slew of people lately who have been emailing me and posting that they cannot post in the IE or Security forums. When they click submit, they get the message: "The forum specified does not exist." I have looked into the problem and, unfortunately, it is a …

Re: I actually have my php backend manually adding the target="_base" to each URL throughout the site. However, you can declare this on a per-page basis as well. Within the <head> </head> tags, add:
<base target="_blank" />
This will use _blank as the default. Adding a target="_top", etc. tag to an individual …
I figure I'd let you all get a go at another math riddle :) Let's see if you can figure out the pattern and then guess the next three numbers. The first person to successfully post the next three numbers of the pattern will receive $5 PayPal :) 1, 11, …
Re: I can only tell you how to do it if you have a U.S. PayPal account, as it seems that certain stuff on the PayPal website is switched around depending on what country you are in. But here is what to do ... first, go to PayPal and login. Then …
Re: I haven't used phpBB2 in awhile but I'm pretty sure it can be setup in the ACP to work via invitation only. Is there also an option to make the memberlist private? If not, this can be edited via a simple one line mod to the memberlist.php file that I …

Re: In almost all cases, if a page contains no PHP code, it can have either a .php or a .htm extension. If a page does contain even one line of actual PHP code, it must have a .php extension. To be perfectly honest though, anyone with a dedicated server can …
Re: You're not imagining anything! The weekends always hit DaniWeb very hard. However, this weekend was worst than most probably because of all of the college students moving to their schools, into dorm rooms and apartments, etc. in preparation of the new school year. Not only that, but the summer always …
Re: I like buy.com and cdw.com ... I've also bought from newegg
Re: Freshell.org looks like it gives you a free shell account on their server. As they say, they are a "public access unix system". So it isn't actually MS-commands you need to know, but linux/unix commands. What do you plan on using this account for?
Re: Because traditionally when you purchase a shared hosting account (meaning you rent space on a server that hosts lots of accounts) you purchase a different account for each site. Then, if you want to put out the bucks for a dedicated server, where the entire machine is under your control, …
Re: Emphasize that new news is being posted nearly every day. Offer a form of interaction - by means of a forum or even just a way to comment on news articles - because that brings people coming back to see what other visitors have to say, instead of just static …
Re: DaniWeb currently uses only about 250 MB of hdd space to store the forum database. However, for the amount of traffic we receive (about 600,000 unique sessions each month), we require nearly 80 GB of bandwidth monthly.
Re: Hehe I'm sorry to say you're both wrong. :) DaniWeb was founded in June 2003, making the site only 14 months old. I registered the domain name in 1998, back when I was in high school, as a personal homepage. I posted pictures of my dogs on it - that …
Re: Hey there. Sorry, no experience at all with prolog. All I could suggest is google :( I just had to come say hi to CompSciGuy from CompSciGal !! :)
