Re: It should be noted that there are also many threads on DaniWeb that take on the form of ongoing discussions, and what I don't want to do is turn DaniWeb into a bug ticket system. Therefore, the 'solved' link is meant as an aid when browsing the site, and a …
Re: There was a bug yesterday. It was fixed early this morning. Thanks for the heads up.
Re: I put Coffee House but not for the Geek's Lounge but due to the DaniWeb Feedback Forum and Area 51 and all of the other private staff forums in there.
Re: If it's a very solid idea, there are indeed venture capitalists out there. But on the flip side, I started DaniWeb with no more than $10/month web hosting, and all money that was put into it was from revenue generated. So it IS possible to be successful without an investment. …
Re: When you quick reply to a post, you're just using AJAX to throw the new post up without actually refreshing the page. The new post made is the only thing on the page that updates, to save you from a page load.
Re: I think mariocatch is confused that silveto_smiley expects us to write his program for him, which we won't do according to our forum rules. We only do homework problems if you put our name on it instead of your own.
Re: I've had a lot of problems of this sort related to bad RAM. Take the memory to your local computer store, where they usually have the lil devices to test the memory.
Re: My personal belief is that a site will not suffer if every so often a bad neighborhood links to them, especially if the number of "bad" links is far outweighed by the number of high quality backlinks. As a site becomes more well known and mainstream, it can only be …
Re: Wouldn't it be great if the most votes go to the option of refusing to participate in polls?
Re: This is actually normal for us. We'll usually peak at over 2,000 early afternoon. Last week we hit nearly 5,000 users online at once.
Re: Hi, The places in both screenshots where you say whitespace (and could be used for advertising) is actually where the page navigation links go on long threads. Still working on changes: I think I may have kinda sorta released wayyyy toooo early.

Re: I believe subdomains are looked at as just that ... sub-sites or mini-sites which are self-contained. I think their biggest problem as far as SEO (and usability!) is concerned is that you can't use relative links among various subdomains of a single site.
Re: Your set-up is perfectly fine, but if you use *very* bad SEO practices (ie the kind that will get you banned from Google) with one of the sites, I believe it can carry over to the other sites.
Re: Unfortunately I don't know of a way around proxy servers. Do you requite email confirmation for newly registered members? If you have someone's email and their IP address, you may be able to get their ISP to take action if they are being abusive.

My resolution for the rounded corners dilemma was to go ahead and add an option into the USER CP that allows members to disable rounded corners, the navigation dropdown menu, or both. Please use this option instead of disabling individual scripts via your web browsers as this ensures that nothing …
Re: The yellow one is generated by JavaScript by me. The grey one is generated by your web browser. The thing is ... the grey one is supposed to be auto-disabled when you see the yellow one. Does anyone else experience this? Ancient, temporarily you can disable the yellow one that …
Re: AdSense ads are displayed in the same order that they would be if one was performing a query on Google. The order is dependant upon how much an AdWords advertiser bids and their CTR (ad performance). The quality (how high up the chain) of ads displayed on an AdSense publisher …
Re: Is it getting power? Is the power supply "surging"? (I think I might've made up my own word) The only reason I ask is that happened to me once. New computer, new power supply. Hook everything up. Power on the power supply. It was bad. Sent a surge through all …

Re: It seems your only reasons for restructuring the Linux category is because it appears dead. Instead of restructuring something that has remained the same for three years, I'm simply going to make it my next focus in my promotion efforts.
Re: There are two reasons why we use database thread tracking as opposed to cookie-based tracking. The first is that it was requested by members who want tracking information to remain consistant between their home or work computers. The second is that we have a lot of members in the tech …

Re: Eh, I don't care for it much. It takes me longer to find that page with it's long-winded URL than it does to type an extra word into my google toolbar.
Re: How is your forum hosting business profitable? Do you put sponsor advertisements on the hosted forums? Once you calculate how much money you can generate by hosting a forum, you will know how much you can spend on attracting a new forum to your business. You might be able to …
Re: Nice idea. Do you sell advertising on your site? Does the site generate any revenue? I think that the first step to any good promotion campaign is to calculate exactly how much money is made on a new visitor to your site and a new member to your site. This …
