It says at the top if you haven't reached it yet ... I think it's something like be a member for at least a week and have at least 5 posts.

Routing bug fixed. Thanks for letting me know :)

Mike,

Firstly, yeah, it will most likely be a separate notification system than private messaging. I'm with you there.

Secondly, while I really like your idea, it's also important to me to incorporate the social community building aspect of it ... playing matchmaker hooking up people who need help with people capable of providing the help, being a connector, and fostering online professional relationships. I feel like making it all anonymous makes it strictly about money flowing out of one hand and into another and less about connecting people within the community who share interests.

Can anyone possibly come up with an idea to help marry Mike's idea with my objectives? :)

ddanbe commented: I'm in with you: connecting people! +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK, so it seems that my idea has merit since everyone seems excited about working out the kinks in the idea. Except, of course, for Nick Evan, who seems to think that money isn't a good enough incentive to come back to us. :) But, perhaps, maybe he's wrong, because a thread called 'Get Paid to Answer Questions' apparently caught his attention enough to post.

Regardless, seems like it's worth hammering out the details here.

I just noticed tonight that the Login via Facebook feature hasn't been working for an embarassingly long time (aka multiple days). I checked it out, and apparently FB decided to change something on their end to break our OAuth integration. It was an easy fix, and it's working again. Sorry for the massive inconvenience!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

My first thought was that I wonder if all of the forums use the same anti-spam system such as stopforumspam.com but it seems you thought of that already. Unfortunately that's the only thing I can think of :(

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Davey, that's so mean! :-P Remember, DaniWeb started as the class notes from my Intro to Programming college course, to help other Computer Science students needing help with the same coursework.

It seems like you're using Blogger, so youcan update the template by using the template designer as so: https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/176245?hl=en

I think it's really sad that this is actually a byproduct of the majority of threads being one-off wehre the OP never returns. I'm more interested in what we can do to rectify that problem in terms of getting them more interested in returning to not just mark the thread as solved, but to stick around. Then again, I guess returning to mark the thread as solved is a good first step, and it also goes a long way to make responders feel appreciated, which, in turn, makes them want to respond to more threads.

Why does a 4-5 page Jira website take 12 days to complete? Full days? I would think a couple hundred bucks.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The Windows Essentials dashboard showed the computer as Offline and still showed the OS as being Windows 8.

Rerunning the /connect tool fixed it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, you're missing something :)

When you do a lost password request, it changes your password to a random unknown combination of characters, and logs you into the edit profile page. You need to reset your password to something and save that. At this point, your password is some unknown entity, so you will want to go ahead and change it from your edit profile page ;)

I've been in bed with the flu for the past week and haven't even looked at my computer. I'm finally starting to feel better!

I'm going through everything that I missed, slowly but surely, but I'm likely not going to catch everything. Were there any important things that I missed that need to be brought to my attention? Any oustanding bugs? Goings on within the community?

Welcome back!!!!! :) I remember you! Why did you delete?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

As you may know, I've been putting a lot of work into the DaniPad website @ http://www.daniweb.com/danipad over the past few days. Because DaniPad accepts credit cards, I had to go ahead and get an SSL certificate and optimize the site for https:// over http://

While doing so, I've gone ahead and set up DaniWeb's registration, login and edit profile pages to be secure as well.

The easiest way to get started for someone without a lot of web dev experience is to use a preexisting service.

Here's an example of one => http://www.bravemailer.com/

I'm confused by what you mean. Webpage size? Standard sizes??

Basically you just need to design your sites to accomodate people who browse your site from all different size web browsers and resolutions. Design for 1024 pixels wide, typically.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Are you sure it's the editor that's the issue? I haven't been able to replicate this :( When did it start happening? And the editor freezes for you?!?!

Hi there Mike :) Welcome to DaniWeb. Don't mind Alexline ... sometimes newbies don't know / understand proper forum etiquette so we give them a little extra slack as long as it shows they are trying to be courteous and trying.

Do you mean like your member activity stream?

http://www.daniweb.com/members/1100184/m1k3mca/activity_stream

Activity done on their posts ... you mean if like a moderator edits/deletes a post? You receive a private message if that happens.

You can also watch articles and receive notifications when they're updated.

Forwarded this to blud, although I suspect it was just an anomaly.

Team Colleages are personal friends of mine who helped with getting the site off the ground back in the day, founding members, and ex-moderators.

The one thing true of all team colleagues is that while none are active staff members, they were all instrumental in volunteering a significant amount of their time and efforts in the past to help shape us into what we are today.

That's the point of the mailing list :) It actually already does filter out content we don't think you'd be interested in. There's a warning label when you opt into it that you're supposed to set up mail rules to do filtering for you based on your own needs.

A few years back had the pleasure of meeting Dani himself in a get together focused on game development which unfortunately didn't succeed due to lack of members.

Umm ... are you sure? I'm a girl :)

That being said, I do think I know what game development get together you are referring to and you're probably confusing me with Kerry Webber, my friend/coworker who I was there with.

Firstly, our editorial workshop is designed to allow you to write your tutorial directly from there, and keep revisiting it over and over again, until you're ready to mark it ready for publishing.

That aside, there are Markdown editors such as http://markdownpad.com/

A handful of results also come up if you Google 'microsoft word to markdown'.

That will totally replace Facebook? Currently unknown ... but that doesn't mean that Facebook's future killer isn't currently in stealth mode building up capital, or perhaps has yet to be invented. On the Internet, anything can happen over the course of a day's time.

No, because it's expensive to both produce and run preroll video ads. I think the cost of producing video ads makes them cost prohibitive.

Or are you talking about uploading Youtube videos, themselves, as part of a marketing strategy? I think that's very beneficial, but also very time consuming :( Plus you need great ideas to go viral. Great for those capable of doing it ... unfortunately I'm not one of them!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That's because you're spamming. Stop spamming because all it does is make you look bad. Create good quality content and use social media widgets on your articles so that people will want to link to you.

Create tools that encourage people to link to you like we do with our member badges @ http://www.daniweb.com/stats/get_badge

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I have never heard of IP canonicalization. I'm not sure what that is.

URL canonicals is when multiple URLs on your website all display the same or very similar content. Typically this happens with dynamic sites.

You don't want to bog down or confuse the Google index by having multiple URLs that all are pretty much the same thing, so you use the following tag in the HTML head:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/page.html" />

You pick just one of the URIs that you want Google to index and show in its SERPs, and you mention that URI in all of the similar pages to it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Or you can give the link anchor text like this :) Just use the Link button in the editor toolbar.

I'll investigate to see if there's an easy way to get post replies to work sans javascript. Off the top of my head, though, it was designed with javascript in mind, so I'm not sure if this is entirely possible.

As an alternative, try subscribing to our mailing list (option in your member profile). It functions like an old-school listserv mailing list and you can reply via email. :)

Until not very long ago, the More dropdown menu on the Google search results pages offered the ability to filter the results by type: News, Discussions, Blogs, etc. There were quite a handful of choices and they've all existed for years and years.

It used to work great for me, but for the better part of 2013, I actually found it quite frustrating because whenever I was filtering site:daniweb.com results by Discussions, only news stories and code snippets would come up, and meanwhile all of the forum threads would show up when filtering by Blogs. In fact, I posted something a few months ago suggesting that the reason for our Google traffic decrease might be because Google thinks our forum threads are blogs, and is holding them up to the same editorial quality standard as blog entries as opposed to discussions. A few days ago, I finally had enough and tweeted my frustration to Matt Cutts from Google:

@mattcutts Confused: Our editorial articles and code snippets are classified as Discussions in SERPS and none of our forum discussions are?

Now, a week later, all the filter choices have miraculously disappeared. There's an article about this over at Search Engine Roundtable as well where they seem to suggest that the filter options are now search query-specific, but from everything I can see, the Blogs and Discussions filter choices no longer exist.

Conspiracy? :)

Some of the people in this thread seem to think you're talking about your SEO PageRank (building backlinks, etc.)

AdWords "rank" is Quality Score, and it based on your bid and CTR. Create very targeted ads that reuse keywords you're bidding on (because then the keywords in the ad will appear in bold). Create lots of niche ad groups so that you can segment ads with targeted keywords.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Facebook and Twitter will come and go ... the same way MySpace did. The buzzword "social media" will also come and go. But the concept of being part of a connected world is not going anywhere. People have been chatting on bulletin board systems since the 1970s, and Internet-based chatting has existed since at least the 1980s. Like anything, the industry will evolve and change with the times. It's just a matter of which sites stay ahead of the curve and which can't keep up with changing wants and needs.

When you say the cost of SEO, are you talking about hiring an SEO consultant or doing pay-per-click advertising such as with Google AdWords?
