This is a laptop i take it? If so, then check the monitor connections weren't pulled out / dislodged when you put in the new CD/DVD drive. Also, is this CD/DVD drive compatible with your laptop? Some laptops are quite fussy with which hardware components they can use.

You could go into the HDD find the prog file that would open outlook, then make a shortcut for it, move that to desktop, then put it into the start menu. Is that what u mean?

See if you can restore it back further (when it was normal). Run an anti-virus scan to make sure no malicious things have entered ur computer. Otherwise, try using 'Run' feature from the Start menu, to double check that it works.

Can you move around the system screen where 'safe mode' is highlighted? Use the arrow keys, or can you not select any option other than safe mode? Safe mode is designed to use the 'safest settings so that the computer can run.

My strong advice is... DON'T GET A DELL!!! get anything other than a dell. edit: i would advise getting an ATI radeon of some sort ~mine is an X1600XT (256Mb of V-RAM) and it works beautifully :)

Check the power/data cables are the correct way around. Some of them can fit both ways round in the sockets. Also dropping a laptop in a puddle isn't very good, so check that none of the capacitors have ruptured, or any connections between the circuit boards are not damaged.

Normally a blue screen (aka the blue screen of death or BSOD for short), is due to a RAM or graphics card issue. What graphics card are you running, and how much RAM do you have?

Have you had a virus recently? if so, start it in safe mode, and run a virus scan, this will then hopefully fix the start-up freezing.
