Are you sure that the cd/dvd drive is at the top of the boot order in BIOS?

Is there no option to select boot device? (My PC has a F8 option to selct boot device)

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

memtest tests your RAM. There must be something wrong with that. Try taking a stick out if there is more than two.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you try the CD version Or just the floppy one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi,

If trying safe mode results in the same then you could try a bootable CD. This should determine if it is a Operating System issue or Hardware issue.

If we can't solve your problem you may have to buy a new drive. hopefully that won't happen.

I know Daniweb needs to make money but some of these silly ads are getting in the way. Whats going on?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

No problem, only it will run at 266 MHz only...

Thats true but it would be a bit slower than PC2700 though -but it would work. How much RAM have you now and what speed is it?

If you do upgrade it is better to have two of the same size and speed.
If your after 2GB get a kit of two 1GB etc...

- hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Try going into device manager and see if you noraml keyboard is listed.

There should be two keyboards. Also see if you can use you laptop keyboard by entering BIOS at boot up - Then exit BIOS without saving.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you try swapping the sticks of ram?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

try cleaning the disc and check whether your cd drive can read it...or check whether BIOS still detect your cd drive..

Yes I would do the above. Check if the CD drive is recognised in BIOS try pressing DEL or F2 at boot up to enter BIOS. If it turns out the CD drive is knacked then they are not to expensive.

Try the bootable CD in another computer. Or are you saying the CD loads but doesn't progress to the installation stage?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

What happens when you insert a CD?
Does it show up in explorer?
Have you tried differnet CDs?

You could also see if the problem is the same in safe mode.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You bring up a good point JugglerDrummer. I guess as long as my site works for 1024x768 and up I'm good. But, I still can't figure out why my post boxes won't fill the whole area given to them though! Any ideas?

Can you post how you want your screen to appear at different resolutions? I know that as you shrink the screen the boxes come closer together.

Post us a pic of what you want it like (do a screenshot of your site).

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay then, I can say that you can't use it as an ordinary USB port.

Earlier I was assuming;

1. PS/2 device -> USB converter -> USB port

If you after more USB ports try a USB hub.

- Hope this helps

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could get a Linux live CD to backup your data to an external hard drive.

Or you could install Windows 7 on a new partition.

I would back the data up using a linux CD if you have a hard drive anyway, just in case.

- Hope this helps get you data back.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You may need to buy a new OS.

I would highly recommend getting Windows 7 while you still can!

install it for now until you can find a new OS or solve your problem.

- I recommend installing it on new partition using custom install, you can get you data back that way.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You may already have a suitable graphics card. How many connections for monitors are their?

It may also depend on what you intend on running on the screens. Playing games will require a decent graphics card(s) but if you are just doing light tasks like web browsing you can get a cheaper one.

Your motherboard specs would be helpful. Do you have AGP, PCIe etc...
It may be useful to investigate if you PSU has adequate power for a new card aswell.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have a connector ps2 to usb port. Can I use that usb port as a regular USB port?
I know that they are for usb mouse and keyboard but can I use it for a flash driver or some other device?

Are there any other types of devices that could use the ps2 port?

You make it sound like you have connected a ps/2 device to a USB port via a ps2/USB converter.

Which is it?

1. PS/2 device -> USB converter -> USB port
2. USB device -> PS/2 converter -> PS/2 port

either of the other 3 divs have something on it so dont think thats the problem cause they have width and height and a bgcolor so they should display

Maybe the other Divs are hiding it. Can you put in your CSS a margin for your footer Div to see if it is positioned behind the others and where it is located.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

The div has nothing in it.

Try putting a border in CSS around the foot div to see if it displays.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Just a quick question are you after plugging USB devices into a PS/2 port?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you sure the cable supports 1Gbps and if you are thinking that having a connection speed of 1Gbps will speed up the internet connection it won't (for a home connection).

Are you part of a network?

I doubt your internet connection will be above 1ooMbps so I don't think there is any point worrying about it as you can't utilize the extra speed anyway.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If you install the OS on a new hard drive it shouldn't touch the other hard drives. If you are still not sure disconnect the other hard drive and reconnect after the OS is installed.

You could partition a drive and install the OS there if you wanted.

- Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Are you asking can you use the USB ports that the mouse and keyboard are plugged in for things like flash drives? If you are then most likely you can; try it.

If you have PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse avaliable why not use them and free up 2 USB ports.

- Hope this helps

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

looks like it crashes when connecting to the internet. Have you tried disconnecting the ethernet cable or disabling the wirless card to see if it is network connections causing the problem.

Try looking in the event viewer for any errors. Type event viewer in the start search bar.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

- PC Wizard 2008 Try this for scanning the hardware.

- Product Key Finder Try this for getting the windows product key if you can borrow a XP home CD.

Good luck with sorting your OS.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If you have a Pro disk why not try it. Windows should install, you may have to get drivers for ethernet adapters, graphics card etc but you can use tools to detect them.

If you current OS is working try to find out the what devices are on your computer using the device manager.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How about if you alter the system and force XP to reconfigure it's self. Can you remove a stick of ram or remove a graphics card and use an onboard one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Maybe it is interference. Have you tried changing the channel or repositioning the antenna?

Does the location make a difference to the connection speed? eg. is the connection speed the same 1 meter away as it is about 10 meters away?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How about trying a completely different operating system?
How about a linux Live CD.

Or maybe format the drive via command prompt. Or try Super Fdisk.

- Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Holding down the power buttom always works. However, by not shutting down automatically, the computer will not hibernate nor allow me to do a System Restore!

Have you tried entering safe mode?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

UPDATE:

In Task Manager, it shows two graphlines, one Red and one Green. Could this be the other core recieving a load? I can only select "One Graph per CPU" in View>CPU History. I want to see the two cores in action. And I wonder why I cannot display both CPU graphs in the Perfoemance tab.

Also in the leveler bar graph to the left, it too shows both Red and Green bars, with the Red bar not going to high. Only once did it soot up to 90%. If not, then what is the Rad graphlines and bars mean?

Don't forget, AMD CPUInfo cannot show the other core in its assesment. And I can't seem to get absolute proof that both are working.

The red line is kernel times, it seems your system isn't recognizing the second core still.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried going into device manager and click on scan for hardware changes?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I suggest you Get windows 7 now downloads stop at the end of this month I think.

You could try installing it on a new partition and see if it works.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could try reducing the margin and set width to 100%.

If you are after a bit more space before Home and after Search try putting.

Is your port not being forwarded properly?

You have to configure your router to allow the port to be forwarded. For my router it is under virtual servers, enter the port number in/out being the same and use that port for torrents. I think it is in preferences in the torrent program.

configure the router and torrent program to use a certain port.

Hope this helps.

I use bit torrent and that test whether your port is forwarded or not.

That is business GB compared to Computer GB.

1,000,000,000 bytes is one Gigabyte. You hardrive should have about 500,000,000,000 bytes. But Windows calls a Gibibyte a Gigabyte. A Gibibyte is 1,073,741,824. So there appears to be a loss in space.

This may be confusing but this may help explain better.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried holding the power button down?

Perhaps remove Norton 2009 and run CCleaner.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How many sticks of ram do you have? If you have more than one try swapping them about and try one at a time.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Ok so I did fix the center align nav menu (It's still not perfect...640x480 people aren't going to like the look of it to much so if there is any other fix, please post!! :) ). Aside from that...any ideas on the post width problem not filling the whole given area?

What is the CSS for that object. Dimensions, margins etc...

I would prefer the Nav to be longer and the text bigger. It would be much better if the navigation fit on one line.

If there is no recovery partition and you can't or don't want to recover the system then I see no harm in installing XP Pro, you should be able to get most drivers as long as you know what drivers you need.

On the Sony site does it let you choose which operating system to download drivers for?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried using a DIV for your navigation aswell. I use this for my site and the links don't exceed their borders.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you post your CSS?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried using something like margin-left:25%;?

As for your post boxes how about black text on a light grey background? -maybe have a border slightly lighter or darker than the background.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried another monitor or tested to see if the current one works?

Do you have a graphics card aswell as onboard graphics? If you have both try removing the graphics card and see if it works.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is there no recovery partiton?

If you can get the same version of windows installed you can use the key that came with the laptop.

For example if you have a friend with a XP home CD and it was XP home on the laptop you could use the key that came with the laptop to activate windows.

- hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can use EasyBCD to edit the boot loader, for example set vista as default OS and change selection time from 30 sec to a shorter time.

Hope this helps.

! Don't forget to do a custom install not an upgrade when installing win 7 !

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Put simply, yes you can install win 7 on a different partition and you can select which OS at boot up.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried pressing windows key+ break? What processor does it show?

Also, have you tried going into device manager to see if the new processor is there in place of the old one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have a look at this.

I believe it is a PCI slot. There are graphics cards avaliable for that slot but they won't be anywhere near as fast as AGP or PCI-e.

What is you location? I know where some PCI cards are avaliable in the UK.
