I would expect it to be under Advanced. Whilst you are in BIOS can you check that the hard drive is still in the boot order near the top in the boot tab.

If we can't sort out the problem I recommend getting a linux live CD and copy the files you want to an external hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Right...

Try entering setup(F2) and see if there is an option for testing hardware and select hard drive.

The last option will be to reinstall XP but leave that option till later.

Do you have important data on their you want to save?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay...

If you have the XP cd have you tried using that to fix XP? If the Hard drive test passed, try fixing it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

no usb devices connected no, what do you mean by a hard drive test?

If you enter BIOS there may be an option to test the hard disk try pressing DEL / F10 / F11.

The test will take some time.

Something else to try, have you any bootable CD's like Linux, if you do try them.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Looking at this blog, have you connected it before turning on your computer?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Do you have any usb devices connected?

Can you do a hard drive test from the BIOS?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay, my bad I had never heard of 'endian' before, never mind eh?

So there you go saneeha;

And yes, as far as I know, Windows XP uses the little endian encoding system.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Not a very helpful error message is it?

Do you have the CD for it? I would try reinstalling or repairing it.

Try clicking on see what the error report contains there maybe something in there.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Does the BIOS detect that you have 2GB of RAM?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello, I am not too sure what you are asking.

Usually when I talk about system architecture I refer to 32-bit or 64 bit architecture. Broadly I would say it is to do with design and operation of the computer.

I think you are confused with sizes. I would say you have 32-bit or 64-bit architecture size is of no concern.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay, bet that cost a bit.

Don't forget to mark this as an expensive solved then.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

your two conditions. in first condition because when $error==4 then it will go to for first condition and if ($error==2) then why are you again checking for with OR operator

if ($error==4)

if ($error==2)

try this format

That say's it a bit better.

if (($error==2) || ($error==4))

The if (error == 4) part will never return true so it isn't needed.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you have an anti-virus?

If you do have one you run a virus scan. Looks like it isn't just the DVD drive that is the problem.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have used AVG and Comodo. Comodo has firewall and antivirus (you can choose to have both or one). I use both and have no problems with them.

- Hope this helps

Are you sorted with anti malware and firewall?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello dlacloche

This may work WinFF I use it to covert flash videos it may work for you aswell. Just select the file you want to convert and select covert to WMV and convert.

- Let me know if it works or if you want heklp using it. Happy Encoding.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi

I don't know to much about PHP but I would use the variable like $errormsg instead of $error.

You set the value of $error = "You did not upload any file attachment do you still wish to proceed?" as long as $error is 4.

So if $error is 4 then the next if statement will not be carried out because it is no longer a number.

Hello

Just to let you know I believe refresh rates do apply to LCD monitors.

It's not how fast your computer can generate the picture it is what the monitor can handle and what is worthwhile; meaning can the human eye tell the difference.

The response rate is how fast a monitor can react to change, the screen is refreshed regardless of any changes made.

Your computer graphics card will generate frames. These frames may add upto 100 Frames Per Second but if the monitor is operating at 50 hz only 50 frames would be displayed.

Check out Fraps this will tell you how many frames are being generated.

- Hope this explains some.

Hello

You could try Ballistix or maybe HyperX.

You want high clock speeds and low latencies.

Also what OS are you using 64-bit can exceed the 4GB limit if the moterboard supports. A 32-bit may not utilise all 4GB.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I'll keep this post simple, I want to set up a dual desktop that does not "mirror" but will still have the taskbar and icons on it, I want to be able to move between the two and have multiple DIFFERENT tasks open on each, is this possible?

I am not sure about the icons but I know you can extend your display across two monitors. Each screen can contain different windows.

You could go a step further by running a virtual OS on the other display using something like virtual box.

But for what reason do you want two displays for?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you got the xp cd? I suggest repairing it using the XP cd.

Have you tried using the alternative login, I think if you quickly press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice before logging in you may login using the alernative.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Is this connection wired or wireless?

I suggest going to the network and sharing center (click on the network icon).

Then try going to customise across from the network name and select merge or delete network locations and try deleting the unwanted network. If they are the same network try merging them.

Can I also ask is your network set to private or public?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello what version of linux are you after?

Have you considered buying off the internet like of amazon.com?

You can request a free CD from Ubuntu but it can take upto 10 weeks, I don't know if you can pay for it to get delivered earlier or not.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

My Compaq Presario 710us stopped working suddenly. Can anyone shed some suggestions.

Hello Jimmy5,

Can you be a bit more specific with you problem.

Does you computer fail to turn on?
Does it boot? etc...

- We may be able to help if we have more info.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

I would say if you want no more than 4 partitions on a drive then format it as primary. Otherwise if you want more than that then format it as logical.

I would advise formating as primary as I think having to many partitions is messy.

on the dell website it doesnt have drivers listed for my model, which is a optiplex gx260. all they have is 760. but thats the reason, cause of the drivers. cause we have a dell cd for drivers and utilities, we just dont know which one is the right one to install

Okay you are looking for ethernet or network drivers.

Have you made any hardware changes since you bought it?
Have you updated any drivers?

If the answer to both is no I see no problem with installing them all.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Double click on the items with exclamation marks and see what it says.

I suspect you are going to have to install the drivers for them. Visit the Dell website and get your drivers for the components and install the drivers.

Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Well I wouldn't bother with the CD next time I find they often interfere and as in your case mess something up. Have you tried restoring the computer to an earlier state?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Does the machine turn itself off once you turn it on?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I also have a HP laptop and mine is the same, but the wireless card still works though. Ubuntu doesn't take notice of the switch position after all most laptops are designed with windows in mind.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have found a page that maybe useful Here.

Do you have any system restore CD's?

Also does it come up with anything when you press those keys?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you notice if any other items had an icon like an exclamation mark next to them?

Could you connect to the internet before using this CD?

Have you tried rebooting without the Ethernet cable plugged in or is this desktop wireless? On the wireless box does it show the PC is connected?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Go to control panel > performance and maintenance > Administrative tools > computer management. On the left select device manager, then expand network adapters and double click on the network adapter. Make sure the device usage is set to enabled and click on the driver tab and see if the driver is there.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can have four primary partitions on a hard drive. Which means you can have up to four primary partitions on each hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

ok, so i put in a recovery disk to start all fresh and new on my dell desktop computer. I re-installed windows XP with the CD and everything was going good. When I put in my MTS Internet CD, it checked off everything and said it passed the test, but then it said Ethernet Adapter (a pop up window): shutdown, add hardware, and reboot. The problem is that my computer already HAS and ethernet adaptor, and I have a wireless box so the rest of the comps in my house work. What could be the problem????

Thanks!

Hello,

may I ask what this internet CD is.

Have you tried rebooting the computer?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hmm...

Okay I would recommend reinstalling windows. Is there any important data on the drive? If their is you may back it up by using a linux live CD.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

So is the data you want on another partition?

Because if you use the system restore disks it may format the drive and then install vista. If you can can get a linux live CD you can backup some of the data to an external hard drive and then format the drive and reinstall windows.

This is what I would try anyway hope this helps.

I have a Gateway model: MT6916 s/n 1MA80000032. I need to do a factory restore but don't know the command from boot up. I hope someone can help me with this issue.

Thanks for taking the time to help :)

Hello, hungry_for_info.

Have you tried pressing any of the following at boot up:

F10
F11
CTRL+F10
CTRL+F11

You may also able to access the restore partition by pressing F8.

It can't hurt to try any of these.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Maybe there is something wrong with your graphics card. What OS are you using?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Perhaps this is a Graphics card issue. Have you any other graphics cards you can try?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

No I can't get past the opening screen whatever I do.

Maybe something is wrong with BIOS have you tried clearing CMOS?

I think something is wrong with BIOS because you can't enter it.

If you don't know how to clear CMOS let us know.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello, have you tried reinstalling Ubuntu? You may have removed the GRUB. Now you have tried using the recovery cd's you may have erased the data from the partition windows is in.

If this doesn't work try formatting the entire drive (all data will be lost) and use the recovery disks.

Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Does the screen come on at all?

Have you tried pressing 'F8' at start up?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Have you tried using system restore?

Does safe mode work?

Have you tried selecting using last good configuration?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have the previous version of ubuntu and all i had to do was put the cd in and it automatically booted without having to press any keys.

did you do verify the file you downloaded by checksum?

Do you turn vista off completely not hibernate or anything like that?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I'd be asking them what the hell have they done.

anyway have you tried booting with usb devices disconnected and ethernet unplugged?

You may have clear CMOS.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

What have you tried so far?

Which language are you interested in?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

The advanced search feature on this site is crap. It seems like it doesn't search 90% of the site, and the results it does dig up aren't anywhere close to relevant. You're better off using some more advanced google expressions to get the job done than DaniWeb's search feature.

This is what I mean. I find it difficult finding something relevant. I think some improvements can be made to narrow down the results better.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay how about this, I have used an ubuntu forum and they have a 'how to' section. You write the how to and submit it , that then gets reviewed by a moderator.

We could have something like a submit section on tutorials. Submitted tutorials can then be published when they are reviewed.

Could something like this be done, after all i read earlier that you have to contact someone to do it. This way we wouldn't need to contact anyone just wait for it to get reviewed/checked.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster
Something like this?

Not really, I meant something a bit simpler like if I am in the windows forum being able to search that forum only using the bar in the top right by selecting search this forum; instead of going through the process of filling the extra fields.

If I try searching for this thread it comes up with no results.
